3-0 out of 5 stars IF YOU BUY NEW, IT DOES NOT COME WITH EVERYTHING!
The book itself was great but it does not come with the supplements like the description says! I bought it brand new from Amazon (not an authorized seller) twice due to Mymathlab not being included and both did not come with Mymathlab! When I called customer service they even stated that the supplements were included. So, needless to say I am sending back the second book and back to square one. Beware! The description is not correct you are better off going to the manufacturer's website and getting the whole package without the headache!

I was very satisfied with the overall condition of the book for such an economical price; The cover was not damaged or faded and there were no marks, no torn pages and no dog ears.Books R Good provided excellent service and responded quickly to my emails. In spite of shipping difficulties encountered, Books R Good shipped the book 3 times at their own expense.I cannot recommend this particular purveyor of books highly enough. It is a pleasure to do business with Books R Good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Transition for Advanced Mathematics Review
Great book for those math majors beginning on their proofs journey! Recommend this edition for price to quality ratio!

1-0 out of 5 stars Professors! Listen Up! Don't Use This Book!
I would give this book negative stars if I could.
My first complaint that it is an insanely expensive book for the lack of material.
My second complaint is the lack of material. This book is horrible as far as explaining what needs to be done and how to effectively write proofs. I am really struggling with how this book operates and I have a horrible professor that is just as vague as the book itself.
I would suggest to students that have a proofs class with this book that they should get a supplement book like 'How to read and do proofs'. This will make your proofs experience a little better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing intro book
I took this with an undergrad intro to adv math class and it was amazing! Although the book has some glaring errors, I'm sure the latest edition has fixed all of these. Although the price is a little high, it gives you a good basis for every topic of advanced math and teaches you how to write proofs well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great logic. Easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intellectually satisfying history of mathematics
This is a brilliant book that conveys a beautiful, unified picture of mathematics. It is not an encyclopedic history, it is history for the sake of understanding mathematics. There is an idea behind every topic, every section makes a mathematical point, showing how the mathematical theories of today has grown inevitably from the natural problems studied by the masters of the past.

Math history textbooks of today are often enslaved by the modern curriculum, which means that they spend lots of time on the question of rigor in analysis and they feel obliged to deal with boring technicalities of the history of matrix theory and so on. This is of course the wrong way to study history. Instead, one of the great virtues of a history such as Stillwell's is that it studies mathematics the way mathematics wants to be studied, which gives a very healthy perspective on the modern customs. Again and again topics which are treated unnaturally in the usual courses are seen here in their proper setting. This makes this book a very valuable companion over the years.

Another flaw of many standard history textbooks is that they spend too much time on trivial things like elementary arithmetic, because they think it is good for aspiring teachers and, I think, because it is fashionable to deal with non-western civilisations. It gives an unsound picture of mathematics if Gauss receives as much attention as abacuses, and it makes these books useless for understanding any of the really interesting mathematics, say after 1800. Here Stillwell saves us again. The chapter on calculus is done by page 170, which is about a third of the book. A comparable point in the more mainstream book of Katz, for instance, is page 596 of my edition, which is more than two thirds into that book.

Petty details aside, the main point is the following: This is the single best book I have ever seen for truly understanding mathematics as a whole.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relationship between algebra and geometry
It is a very good book.It has presented very clearly some difficult-to-understand relationship especially the link between algebra and geometry. It is a very good balance - history, Mathmatics, biography all mixed very well together.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars concise and well written summary of mathematics
Stillwell covers a lot of ground in a short undergraduate text intended to unify various mathematical disciplines.Naturally, _Mathematics_and_its_History_ begins with the early Greeks and in particular geometry (which is how mathematics was typically expressed then). The development of algebra and polynomial forms is described followed by perspective geometry. The invention of calculus and the closely related discovery of infinite series provide the backdrop for short biographies of prominent mathematicians (mostly dead white males to multicultural deconstructionists). The development of elliptic integrals (used in solving functions with specified boundary conditions such as a Neumann problem found in fluid mechanics). The treatment then diverges to physical problems including the vibrating string and hydrodynamics, together with a note on the renown Bernoulli family. Then Stillwell returns to the esoteric in complex numbers, topology, group theory and logic with some comments on computation at the end. Some mathematicians may find the overview to lack comprehensiveness, but the book's brevity for each topic and biographical notes present a balanced approach to the more casual reader about this important field of study and how it developed.

4-0 out of 5 stars see below
This is an overall good text. It offers a very in depth history of many many mathematical ideas. It gets quite technical at times, which can be a good or bad thing, depending on what you are looking for. ... Read more

Product Description

Here is the classic, much-read introduction to the craft and history of mathematics by E.T. Bell, a leading figure in mathematics in America for half a century. Men of Mathematics accessibly explains the major mathematics, from the geometry of the Greeks through Newton's calculus and on to the laws of probability, symbolic logic, and the fourth dimension. In addition, the book goes beyond pure mathematics to present a series of engrossing biographies of the great mathematicians -- an extraordinary number of whom lived bizarre or unusual lives. Finally, Men of Mathematics is also a history of ideas, tracing the majestic development of mathematical thought from ancient times to the twentieth century. This enduring work's clear, often humorous way of dealing with complex ideas makes it an ideal book for the non-mathematician. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Neither history nor mathematics
This book contains no mathematics, which is OK since it doesn't pretend to.Unfortunately this leads people to classify it as a history of mathematics, but it is not by any means a history book of any kind---the author makes up facts and distorts them to match his preconceptions and prejudices.Given the worth and content of this book, it's amazing that it's lasted this long. The best way to describe it is as pure kitsch.

This book should never be used as a textbook of any sort, and should never, ever be given to children to `inspire' them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Men of Mathematics
A great classic for all those who want to find out about the history of mathematics. Highly recommended. Book arrived in the time frame and condition described by the seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Biographical Account of Some of the Greatest Mathematicians of History
E.T. Bell's book, "Men of Mathematics" is an excellent account of some of the greatest mathematicians of all time, as well as discussions of some of the events surrounding those men's lives and accomplishments.

For mathematical buffs, a book like this can be rather an enthralling discussion, since numerous anecdotes surrounding the mathematicians' mathematical feats, their conflicts with other mathematicians, etc. are discussed.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who's a lover of mathematics, or likes to learn about the giant intellects who largely shaped the directions human mathematical endeavors have taken.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic on history of math and mathematical physics
I bought this book because it is said that it served as inspiration for a young John Nash to start his career as a mathematician. And I was not disappointed.

As a sign of the times it was written in the style is stodgy, but content, prose, and organization are excellent. It tells stories of some 4 dozen or so influential men (and a few women) of mathematics.. It is both an inspiration and a reference of interesting problems (many old ones and some current). Highly recommended for the mathematically inclined. This book can be read as biographies (ignoring many mathematical details) or with more interest the math itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best single volume history of mathematics?
This is the book that turned John Forbes Nash (A BEAUTIFUL MIND) on to mathematics. I'm not enough of a scholar to know if it's the best single volume history of mathematics, but I can't imagine many better. This is a sturdy modern edition -- handsomely, although not, perhaps, beautifully, printed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Eye opener for the mathematics interested layman
This book is an excellent short introduction into "modern" mathematics for those laymen interested in this subject but who never quite caught it. Affordable and entertaining, I wholeheartedly recommended this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very "modern"
I think this book is poorly titled. It describes itself as a book about concepts in "modern" mathematics. However, the concepts in the book are actually mostly quite old. Nearly all of the topics and problems discussed are those I learned way back when I was in school (longer ago than I care to imagine) and are mostly of an elementary nature.

Although the book seems well written for a short survey of basic mathematics topics, it in no way discusses much in the way of "modern" mathematics concepts, which I would consider to be those sorts of mathematical topics and problems that face mathematicians today and that pertain to modern applications.

I was very disappointed in the book and felt it was a waste of the $10 I spent on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to elementary concepts in math
This well-written book introduces some of the most elementary concepts in math in a very simple language. The text is quite engaging and interesting, so even the more knowledgeable people will enjoy reading the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheap and Wonderful Read
Very well written, and reads almost like a good novel.Quite an achievement for a maths book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
This book is by far the best book on mathematics I have ever read. It teaches the concepts in an intuitive, exciting way, and yet it is able to remain fun and engaging throughout. Technical material is tackled, in depth, without there seeming to be any work done. There are no exercises to be done, you simply follow Stewart along for a tour through modern mathematics. Ian Stewart's writing is flawless and almost turns this book into a thriller. I read this book in one night- I could not put it down! I stayed up until 4 in the morning reading and rereading passages; it is truly a masterpiece. The chapters are as follows:

Chapter 1- Mathematics in General: Here Stewart describes certain aspects of mathematics, and discusses their purpose and implications. He talks about abstractness and generality, intuition vs. formalism, and pure vs. applied mathematics. He tells the reader the importance of understanding WHY a theorem is true, not simply that it is. He ends with a collection of anecdotes.

Chapter 2- Motion without Motion: This is an example of thinking a bit outside the box. The chapter is devoted to overturning Euclid's proof that the base angles are congruent, and making a new one based on rigid motions. It doesn't sound too engaging, but, somehow, Stewart manages to make it quite exciting!

Chapter 3- Short Cuts in the Higher Arithmetic: A basic introduction to number theory- prime numbers, moduli, congruences, etc. The informal tone makes this the easiest and most understandable read on number theory I've yet encountered.

Chapter 4- The Language of Sets: Throughout the rest of the book, Stewart uses the language of set theory, so he introduces that here in an easy to understand way (using some imagery like bags of items, etc).

Chapter 5- What is a function?: Here Stewart addresses some of the historical problems of defining a function, and then uses the set theory from the previous chapter to define a general function, and the different types of functions.

Chapter 6- The Beginnings of Abstract Algebra: An introduction to groups, fields, rings, etc. Stewart uses the rigid motions from Ch. 2 as an example of the group concept, and then goes on to make a proof about the game solitaire (the British version) using groups. Also an explanation of the proofs about constructibility (trisecting an angle, etc) are given here.

Chapter 7- Symmetry: The Group Concept: This is where we begin to see that Ian Stewart may have a bit of a bias towards abstract algebra and group theory, as that is his specialty. That is perfectly fine, but definitely something to be aware of. The chapter on Real Analysis is certainly less in-depth than this one, but there are many hundreds of books on that you can use to fill the gaps. (Also, Real Analysis is difficult to make accessible to those without a background in calculus, whereas algebrais concepts are fairly natural). In this chapter Stewart discusses groups, subgroups, and isomorphisms with great passion.

Chapter 8- Axiomatics: This is one of my favorite chapters, and it centers on Euclidean geometry and the importance of axiomatics. It discusses models, the parallel postulate, alternate geometries, consistency, and completeness.

Chapter 9- Counting: Finite and Infinite: This is the standard treatment of Cantor and his amazing discovery. I mostly skimmed this chapter, because I had just completed a book specializing in the subject.

Chapter 10- Topology: From Mobius strips, to Klein Bottles, to orientability, to the Hairy Ball Theorem. This chapter keeps to its title. I especially love the last line about the Hairy Ball Theorem (which is a theorem that seems entirely useless at face value). "It has one application in algebra: it can be used to prove that every polynomial equation has solutions in complex numbers (the so-called 'fundamental theorem of algebra')."

Chapter 11- The Power of Indirect Thinking: This is a foray into graph theory and Euler's Formula. A lovely discussion at the end about coloring, as well.

Chapter 12- Topological Invariants: Continues the discussion of topology and proves Euler's generalized formula. Also classifies surfaces, and proves some more coloring theorems.

Chapter 13- Algebraic Topology: You can see that topology is an incredibly important tool in modern mathematics. Here he discusses Holes, Paths, and Loops.

Chapter 14- Into Hyperspace: A short treatment of polytopes and higher dimensions.

Chapter 15- Linear Algebra: A bit on the geometrical, set-theoretic, and matrix views of solving simultaneous linear equations.

Chapter 16- Real Analysis: A light treatment of infinite series, limits, completeness, continuity, and proving analytical theorems.

Chapter 17- The Theory of Probability: Random walks, binomial distibution, etc. Treated informally.

Chapter 18- Computers and Their Uses: Programming and how it works on a mathematical level.

Chapter 19- Applications of Modern Mathematics: A very interesting read about optimization and catastrophe theory.

Chapter 20- Foundations: The best treatment of Godel's proof I have yet to see. It is surprisingly rigorous, but easy to follow.

Appendix- And still it moves...: This was added 5 years after the book was written, and is an absolute gem! Stewart addresses the proof of the four-color theorem, he talks about polynomials and primes, he talks about chaos and attractors, and he ends with a reflection on real mathematics. A great end to a masterpiece.

This book is for everyone and anyone- a modest background in high school algebra and an appreciation for mathematics is all you need. Buy this book! Give it to your friends! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars To many topics
If you are familiar with a lot of different topics in Math and want to refresh your memory, this is the book for you.If your like me and need more help with certain subjects in Math, this book is not going to be the one. There are way to many topics, math takes repetition to memorize it and this book does not cover enough information for each subject to do that.If you are buying this book for a class, make sure you know exactly what you're getting into.

My son needed this book for his Algebra class. It was in excellent condition for being used.Would recommend this to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parents - you MUST get this book!
If you are a parent of a 5th-9th grade child learning algebra...you MUST get this book! It has helped my child, independently, learn their algebra in a different, easy-to-understand language. When I've had to further assist - I understood exactly.

5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous reference book
I can't say enough good things about the "math on call series" -- I'm a parent who has had these books in the house since my daughter was in fifth grade. We keep them with the school supplies for her reference when she is doing math homework.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars WWJR? Algebra To Go, probably.
This book is a great home reference guide for Algebra and pre-algebra, and especially if your child is ahead of the class and needs to self-teach new concepts.
WWJR? I think He would read this book, if he needed any algebra help. It explains math terms and concepts well enough for an "old style math" parent to help with homework.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very interesting
When I first saw this video on youtube [...] I thought that learning about Vedic mathematics would promote a further interest in geometry. This book is way too simple for anyone who has studied university enterance mathematics and even for people not literate in algebra there are much better books under speed mathematics such as the Trachtenberg system however this book is much more expensive and is aimed at university students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
It's a nice book and easy to understand. There are some problems with the explanations. I would recommend much comprehensive vedic mathematics book for advanced readers.(Ofcourse this book was for children of ages 6-12 i guess)

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book
This book explains fast techniques for doing number work. It covers subtraction, multiplication, special techniques for squaring and finding square roots and cube roots. There are excellent techniques for maniulating fractions. It also covers the conventional techniques for percentages, rounding, finding proportions, sequences, etc. Great chapters on simple equations and simultaneous equations too. With many examples and answers at the back. The many techniques for number work in this book would serve as a good starter or introduction to lessons in this subject. A good resource for teachers and parents. Smart children with an interest in speedy number crunching will find it beneficial too. A good book which is relatively easy to follow. However, be prepared to spend a few weeks to master the different techniques before you start showing off your new mental arithmetical skills!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I found this book has some amazing arithmetical techniques. You can do some really fast mental arithmetic. A good technique for solving simultaneous equations too which I have never seen before! This is a great book on speed mathematics which is well written.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book SUCKS!!!!
Why doesn't the author use proper English?Don't even waste your time on this one.It is not really the complete Vedic system. His ordering is also confusing. He does not cover Vedic geometry, Vedic calculus, Vedic trigonometry, and Vedic algebra. So, why would any of us out of elementary school be interested in reading his pitiful book? Well, that answer my friend is blowing in the wind. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great math textbook
I homeschool my three children and found this book to be excellent. It was easy to understand. It isn't full of the pretty pictures and gimmacks that some math books have but the content was very thorough. It covered challenging concepts (I was learning some new things myself) but the concepts were clearly explained. It gave lots of problems to practice and apply the concepts. It also clearly showed the important concepts and formulas introduced in the lesson. Some of the ways I had been taught as a student were made simpler (ways to find the least common multiple and greatest common factor for example).I would highly recommend this math text book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rigorous and terrific for a math-oriented parent/teacher
A bit about me...I am a big supporter of Singapore Math, which I have used to supplement the horrific math curriculum we have encountered in 4 public schools in our county (namely Math Investigations, Math Connections, and Everyday Math). After switching to homeschooling last year, we used Dolciani's text as part of K12's online homeschool program. We are very happy with it.It is FAR superior to anything my kids have had in a brick-and-mortar school (even in the gifted and talented programs they were in). Each lesson begins with a concise, easy-to-understand approach with great examples. However, the problems for the students increase in difficulty, and sometimes become excessively hard compared to the practice problems.I had to wonder how parents were handling this if they did not excel in math themselves???Fortunately, the teachers' guide that K12 provides, helps overcome this problem. Other things we loved about this text are the real-life connections that are given before each unit that tell kids the applications and careers that utilize the information they are about to learn, from engineering to architecture, to carpentry, and banking! This gives kids a sense of purpose for their efforts. In conclusion, for math-oriented families that want their kids to gain a deep understanding of math concepts, this text is up their with Singapore Math. Thank you, Mary Dolciani!

3-0 out of 5 stars Agreed
While there are examples in the book, the problems jump to much more radically difficult concepts with very little (or no) explanation, leaving students scratching their heads (and sometimes me too!)Additionally, the word problems -- can be a little confusing, and worse, there are too few!If a child is struggling with the word problems there aren't enough in each section or the review sections to use for extra practice.

We will be adding Life of Fred and/or Singapore Math's Challenging Word Problems to supplement this course, especially since I know we'll be using the Course 2 in the on-line school next year.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best book to learn from
I agree with the previous reviewer: this book is not written very clearly and the samples are confusing.Even though the book was required for the course we are taking on line, I have been very disappointed with it.If you must use this book, be prepared to have supplemental materials to help make sense of each topic covered.

I recommend "Painless Guide to Algebra."It is much more straight forward and clear.Even twenty years since I last took a class, this book made everything clear very quickly.Somethings I was able to understand for the first time!

Please save your book dollars to spend on something else other than this math text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good math textbook....

5-0 out of 5 stars 100 problems
squeezing 100 problems into less than 400 pages is not an easy task. There seems to be consistent tradeoff for brevity at the expense of readability. But if you are fairly experienced in elementary mathematics, most of the stuff can be followed. The degree of difficulty in following problems covered in this book varies greatly. Some can be appreciated by people with middle/high school math backgrounds. Others are very challenging to me (4th undergrad in engineering with good math background relative to undergrad math students). The big advantage of this book is that it deals with widely applicable, and historically significant, and applied math problems. This is in contrast to the bulk of math problem books out there that just deal with recreational problems (puzzle for example. but math olympic problems are recreational too, since the best high school students have to be able to solve them in around an hour). Look at the table of content and you will see. Highly stimulating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, and a clarification on the term "Elementary"
I love this book, and recommend it very highly, if you're the type who would like to understand, say, why the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra (every polynomial equation as a (possibly complex) root, is true. Yes, it takes intellectual effort to follow the proofs, but that can be incredibly rewarding, once you finally understand.

But this review is mostly to clarify the term "Elementary" in the title. This is used in a technical sense. Many (most?) of the theorems have multiple proofs. And sometimes the clearest proofs involve calculus, and often the calculus of complex variables. But if a proof doesn't involve calculus, then mathematicians refer to these as "elementary". It is in this sense that the title uses the term.

5-0 out of 5 stars 100 Mathematical Triumphs of Genius
100 Great Problems of Elementary Mathematics is such a goldmine of ingenuity that it is hard to comprehend how it could be sold for so low a price. Ten dollars is practically a steal.

This publication, which was translated into English back in 1965, is a concise summary of some of the greatest works of mathematics throughout mankind's history. The problems contained are quite challenging. Many are such that if you understood any one of them, then you would probably know something that even the best math professor nearest you would not. This may sound like an overstatement, but in a day and age where some PhD's in math have either forgotten or never really learned how to determine so little as the square root of a number by just pencil and paper, it is probably not.

It is from analyzing the book's passages of Bernoulli's Power Sum Problem that I was able to achieve a great mathematical triumph after discovering the following challenge found in William Dunham's The Mathematical Universe: determining a precise mathematical formula to figure out how Jakob Bernoulli could take all the positive integers from 1 to 1000, raise each of them to the tenth power, and then add them up to where the sum came up to over 30 digits! I tried to develop algorithms that would work but failed each time, until I, once again, read this volume.

The situations presented are quite difficult to grasp, but once you get to where you know how to apply any one of them in solving mathematical puzzles, you feel elated. I know I did.

For the individual who enjoys looking at mathematics in a historical context and who wants to approach problems that are perhaps not entirely solvable with the use of the calculator and/or the computer, I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars best summary of classic problem solutions by masters
Elementary algebra and ingenius ideas are combined to solve some of the most difficult problems in the history of math. This book helped me solve several difficult technical problems .
The concise treatment and cross reference to other solutions is outstanding . This is the finest treatment of advanced mathematical treatments I have ever seen. First published in 1932, it represents the best from the masters and can be used to discover tricks which were helpful to me in algorithm development . The treatment of astronomical problems alone is worth the price .

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book about elementary problems I have read till now
Perhaps the stress given to geometry gives evidence to the age of the book, but it still represents an example of how a collection of problems should be written. It is too entangled with mathematics to be defined an issue about mathematical games, but also fans of games can find out some enjoying items. Because, if much room has been given to proofs and resolutions, the boundary of elementary curiosity never goes out of sight, even if it can sometimes look like a far horizon. It is surely the best book about elementary problems, mathematical games and jokes I have ever read till now, and I have found its language as clear and straight as a non-English reader (like me) usually finds a non-English writer. ... Product Description

For undergraduate courses in Liberal Arts Mathematics, Quantitative Literacy, and General Education.

NEW:  Now with “Mini-Excursions” Included!

These are enrichment topics that have been added at the end of each part and require an understanding of the core material covered in one or more of the chapters. Shorter than a full chapter but much more substantive than an appendix. Each mini-excursion includes its own exercise set.

This very successful liberal arts mathematics textbook is a collection of “excursions” into the real-world applications of modern mathematics. The excursions are organized into four independent parts: 1) The Mathematics of Social Choice, 2) Management Science, 3) Growth and Symmetry, and 4) Statistics. Each part consists of four chapters plus a mini-excursion (new feature in 6/e). The book is written in an informal, very readable style, with pedagogical features that make the material both interesting and clear. The presentation is centered on an assortment of real-world examples and applications specifically chosen to illustrate the usefulness, relevance, and beauty of liberal arts mathematics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
I ordered this book as a requirement for a college algebra course and man am I relieved!I'm awful with math but the book states in the introduction that, while not "easy", the problems are intended for those with only a high school education in math and those seeking a liberal arts degree which requires no other math experience.

I have read the first two chapters and feel this coming semester is very do-able as far as achieving a passing grade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Content and Variety of Math Applications
First, please notice the other reviewer seemed to be upset about their shipping mishap, not the book. Don't you hate it when someone confuses their purchase experience with the book content, then describes the book content in terms of their purchase experience?!?!

I have taken many college math courses, including algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Calculus was the only one that had some application to the real world, until the Modern Math class which used this book.

The first chapter starts out with preference ballots, which is relevant in our world of 3rd party candidates stealing elections (think Nader and Perot). It is interesting to see how many voting systems can be applied with varying winners and fairness. After elections and weighted ballots, you learn about Fibonacci Numbers, Golden Ratio, Gnomons, and Spiral growths. Population growth math is explored, as is fractals, symmetry, geometry, statistics, probabilities, and distributions.

Everyone in my class remarked on how much they actually enjoyed the course and the actual textbook. This textbook is extremely easy to read and use, with many colorful pictures, graphs, and side notes. The sections are very easy to digest because they are short and sweet, usually covering one concept per section.

I recommend this book for anyone who is simply interested in the real-world application of math, not just those taking a course which requires this book. There is a student solutions manual sold separately, but don't bother. This book has all the odd answers in the back, and it is not terribly difficult anyways. It is just challenging enough to still be interesting.
