5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the mathematically challenged
I'm now studying electronics engineering in my 60's.I did not take engineering as an undergraduate, for I did not feel I had a sufficient math background in high school.I wound up with a degree in Psychology and Theatre, went to medical school, and now I'm an inventor and need electronics engineering.I don't remember most math.A friend is a college professor of math.He previewed this book for about an hour and said it did not miss anything. He could not find a single important point left out. This first book goes from basic math through basic differential equations in about 1200 pages.Quite a feat!More advanced math is in the second volume.I then bought the book and find it readable and understandable. The concepts are concentrated in order to cover so much material in so few of pages.A great review for those who know math and need to fill "holes."For students like me, it does not miss anything. But that makes it concentrated, taking time to digest. But I have not had college math in over 40 years, yet I can understand it's concepts.Highly recomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well you do want to become an Engineer don't you?
You really can't go wrong with this book. If you want to become a B.Eng or BSc Hons graduate anytime soon, this is the book to get you on the road to success!

I bought an early version of this in the 80's when it was out of print. I had to travel to Oxford on the coach from the North of England just to get the only copy they had in the store (no mail order service). I was the only student in the year to have a copy! I was kind though and loaned it at no charge to my best mates.

Oh Mr Stroud ... we will forever be in your debt!

What you waiting for? Buy it now! ...

P.S.
25 years later I bought the new version for my daughter for her GCSE's. She went from average to super top group in 1 term!

5-0 out of 5 stars remarkable work
I have studied numerous mathematics texts, and I can say with absolute certainty that this is the finest mathematics text I have ever found.Unlike virtually every other technical math book out there(calculus, differential equations, integral equations, statistics etc)this book provides more than the dreary, boring, purely analytic approach (algebra, limits etc) that tends to practically wipe out true understanding. In my calculus class I hear questions whose answers are extremely masked by the highly esoteric mathematical bull@#$@, but which present themselves so easily with a simple picture. This book provides those pictures, but more remarkably it is written in such a way that people want to work through it (compared to those other books). In addition, this book has been shown (via experimentation) to significantly increase test scores (compared to standard lecture approach). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Math program workbook
My husband is a retired NYC school principal. An award-winning educator with Fordham University and New York University and he wants you to know that this is a great book for practicing math skills. If he says it's good, believe it. He's from Brooklyn, he was everything from a teacher to principal and everything in between and he knows education books, what works and what doesn't. He said it was good even for the person who just wants to improve and practice basic math skills. Like me. He handed it to me. Hint. Nudge.

This workbook had a torn page, 15 of the pages had been completed (some in pencil, others in crayon and ink) and several of the pages had been graded by a teacher with a red ink pen. The spine was torn and the name "David" was written on the cover of the journal in permanent market. This information should have been posted in the description, and if it would have been I would not have purchased this book since it is a workbook. ... Read more

Seller was not completely honest with this product.Whole book is written in in pencil. The answers.Didn't even bother to erase it.Called it good condition.I found that to be quite an inconvenience.Having to erase an entire book this size??If I had known would not have purchased.Otherwise book okay but that should have been stated in the ad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!!!!
As a first grade teacher who has now been using Everyday Mathematics for four weeks, this program rocks!
The curriculum provides you a lesson and a number of different activities for every day of the school year, presented in a logical and accumulative order, in a way that is easy to comprehend and in a manner that shows results.
For example, on one day there is a lesson on telling time. The lesson, about 15 minutes long, at the most, involves the use of a paper clock, sample questions detailed in the lessons, and active participation by the students. The main activity that supports this lesson allows the children to indicate time on their own clocks (testing whether or not they understood the lesson) AND a creative aspect in which the children illustrate what they are doing at specific times. Then, included for this day, there are three more activities that reinforce the concept of time, a take home lesson that is simple and fully explained, and several more activity suggestions which reinforce previously introduced concepts. Then, over the next two days, and occasionally for the rest of the year, time concepts are introduced and reinforced.
The lessons are thorough, fun, interactive, easy to execute, and 23 lessons into the year, a huge success with the kids. There is a cost that exceeds just the curriculum- materials, copies, a supplemental Math Masters book- but it is well worth it.Everyday Mathematics is a fantastic program! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for learning to think about elementary math
The recent review of books and programs in mathematics teacher education in America by the National Council on Teacher Quality rated this book the best one in the country, and rated the mathematics education program at UGA where this book is used and was developed, as the ONLY "exemplary" program in the entire nation.Obviously not everyone finds it easy to read, but it does serve its purpose of helping, and requiring, the student to understand the concepts behind the mathematics. It is not easy to teach from this book, as I have learned by experience. The reason was not the fault of the book, but rather the extreme difficulty in getting "test oriented" students to stop looking at mathematics as just a list of formulas and procedures, and to begin trying to grasp the ideas which underly them.Understanding is harder than calculating, and having read it, I can easily understand why this book is professionally considered the best one in the country for making that transition in elementary math teaching.

Please note that the one star review here is not for the book but for the physical condition of the copy received by the buyer, and hence for Amazon's service itself.Hence with a 3 star and a 5 star review the average should be 4 stars for this book so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Excellent book, I recommend this to everyone, especially to believers. This book is not about the Holy Bible codes with equal distance spacing (that alone shows the glory of the Lord God Almighty), it's about the meaning of individual numbers in the Holy Bible. The glory of the Lord God Almighty is shown once again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biblical Mathematics: Keys to Srriptue Numerics
I recently ordered 3 copies of Dr Vallowe's book. I have an original copy which I got directly from him when I met him in 1978. I have been a student of scriptural numerics ever since. His book is the best on the subject that I have found . The extra copies are to lend to others. Great book to give to non-believers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Preposterous, unfounded assertions
I don't doubt Ed Vallowe's love for God or his fervor to serve him, but I think that his focus on numerology is at best misguided and at worst potentially damaging to less discerning Christians. The book's purpose is to "prove" that God wrote the Bible because all the numbers in the Bible somehow line up according to the numerical framework Vallowe describes. The problems with this are twofold:

1) You could never "prove" such a thing. At best, you could provide evidence for or against it.And...

B) It doesn't work.

While you'd get little argument from most scholars that some of the numbers in the Biblical text have symbolic meaning (12 tribes, 12 disciples, 40 days in the desert, 40 days and 40 nights of rain, etc.) but it's hardly obvious that every number up to 40 has some specific meaning, or that compounding them yields a compounded meaning, or that these meanings are consistent throughout scripture.

Furthermore, Vallowe's assertion that not just the numbers in the text, but the chapter and verse numbers themselves have this meaning, is just preposterous. For example, the number 13 is, in many places, symbolic of evil or a bad omen or whatever.Vallowe says it means "Depravity and Rebellion", but the famous "love Chapter" is in I Corinthians 13, and verse 13 of that chapter reads:

"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."

Sounds pretty depraved and rebellious, doesn't it?How Vallowe justifies that, not to mention the hundreds of other examples of inconsistencies you could imagine, is beyond me.

Worse yet, he says that his "system" only works in the King James Version of the Bible, not in other translations.Fair enough, but rather than deducing from that fact that perhaps his numerology theory is flawed, or at best, limited to the KJV, he instead concludes that any other translation of the Bible is somehow faulty!

Imagine the gaul you have to have to dismiss hundreds of years worth of Biblical scholarship because his half-baked theory doesn't mesh with their translations! And with all the older texts that have been found in the last 400 years, his insistence upon using an outdated translation based on outdated texts is both ignorant and selfish.

Unfortunately, Christians who don't understand how to actually study the Bible often see this kind of stuff and think they're finding some kind of hidden meanings, while really they're missing out on the real beauty of scripture: The words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biblical Mathematics
I love this book for I do a lot with it for my everyday life in God and that is why I brought three because I had one copy and I lost it. So now I should not lost three copies

Product Description

More Good Questions, written specifically for secondary mathematics teachers, presents two powerful and universal strategies that teachers can use to differentiate instruction across all math content: Open Questions and Parallel Tasks. Showing teachers how to get started and become expert with these strategies, this book also demonstrates how to use more inclusive learning conversations to promote broader student participation. Strategies and examples are organized around Big Ideas within the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) content strands. With particular emphasis on Algebra, chapters also address Number and Operations, Geometry, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability, with examples included for Pre-Calculus.

To help teachers differentiate math instruction with less difficulty and greater success, this resource:

  • Underscores the rationale for differentiating secondary math instruction.
  • Provides specific examples for secondary math content.
  • Describes two easy-to-implement strategies designed to overcome the most common DI problems that teachers encounter.
  • Offers almost 300 questions and tasks that teachers and coaches can adopt immediately, adapt, or use as models to create their own, along with scaffolding and consolidating questions.
  • Includes Teaching Tips sidebars and an organizing template at the end of each chapter to help teachers build new tasks and open questions.
  • Shows how to create a more inclusive classroom learning community with mathematical talk that engages.

1-0 out of 5 stars It never came
This item never arrived. The seller offered another book from their store, but I found that disappointing.I had to look elsewhere for the book I wanted.

5-0 out of 5 stars So that's how it works...
Bar none, this is one of the greatest textbooks ever written about mathematics. This is THE book for those who have an inquiring mind. It explores and explains logic, and the theory behind mathematical development. In addition, it is peppered with innumerable facts that apply to daily life.

Personally, I always needed to know why something was a rule. However, most of my math instructors were stodgy, unapproachable, prune faced individuals with superiority complexes. Math was a "secret" whose deciphering was saved for the select few who had a natural aptitude. Thank God this is no longer the case...

I use knowledge from this textbook daily in my math classes. It is written for high school level students, but I find my advanced fifth grade and sixth grade truly enjoy the mind bending logic problems. Weekly, we work on some of these challenging problems in small groups. It provides an incredible forum for peer contribution combined with teacher guidance.

This book helps my students build a foundation in logic and inference. The format is smooth, nearly conversational, "friendly," and nothing any of my former math instructors would consider. It actually makes math fun. Yes, math and fun are in the same sentence.

Usually when a student/person hates math, it stems from a lack of understanding combined with the teacher's inability to answer the pressing question of WHY? (Enabling the stodginess...) There are many rules in math, but some students need to know why. This book helps explain and illustrate.

The chapters on deductive reasoning/inference skills are excellent. However, the entire book is a delight. A great choice for the mathophobe who wants to improve their skills and understanding. Even though you will never publicly admit it, you'll find yourself reading this book for entertainment and pursuing the problems for sport. Don't worry, you can read it behind closed doors at night when no one's watching...;-)

As usual, Harold Jacobs has written a book about the spirit of Mathematics. He invites the student into the world of discovery with tools like cartoons, experimental activities of small understandable pieces. The result is a student who begins to "like" math for the first time.I wish every student could study Basic Math, Geometry, and Algebra out of Jacobs' books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mathematical LOVE
Everybody loves a romantic underdog story, where the guy who seems to have no chance at all ends up with the girl of his dreams. But Norton Juster (unsurprisingly) puts a rather different spin on the usual story in "The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics," which is a charming little picture book about... well, a dot and a line. And a squiggle.

"Once upon a time there was a sensible straight line who was hopelessly in love... with a Dot." But though he voices his devotion, the Dot isn't interested -- she's busy romancing a bad-boy Squiggle, and considers the Line to be hopelessly boring and conventional. The Line falls into a depression over his hopeless love... only to discover that he has skills that make the Squiggle look pitiful. Can he win over Dot?

When he wasn't writing clever books like "The Phantom Tollbooth," Norton Juster was a successful architect. To be an architect, you need to know something about lines -- and "The Dot And the Line" is basically a celebration of geometry and all the wild things you can do with a seemingly simple line. Art, mathematics and nature are all explored via The Line.

And Juster writes the whole thing in a delightfully punny manner ("... and before long he was completely on edge," along with an illustration of the Line on the very edge of the page), with some delightful phrases ("You are as meaningless as a melon!"). And he finds countless clever ways to insert the Line into all sorts of places (THE LINE AS A POTENT FORCE IN THE WORLD OF ART), emphasizing its importance far above the Squiggle.

And what's more... it's just so endearing to see the Line working so hard to win over The Dot.

"The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics" is an enchanting little romance that explores all the possibilities in a simple Line.A charming little fairy tale of geometry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freedom is not a License for Chaos
The phrase is the turning point and premise of this amazing, simply delightful little Math book. Math? That is our son's most disliked subject. Wait, The Dot and the Line is not a Math book! It is a hilarious comedy! But is that all? It is a romance, a story of love deeply felt, pursued, capable of provoking great things in the soul. In a little math book? Is it possible? Yes, it is.

Our Classic Languages-loving son reads it aloud every time this book visits us from the library. (Readers, please remind me to purchase a copy for his next birthday). He suffers with the straight, dull and unbending line when driven to the "edge" (of the paper-- the line is drawn on the edge of the page) as the "perfect by every measure" dot flirts around with the anarchist, slothful squiggle. Moved by great love, the line at first attempts to show its own grandeur by asserting its importance in art, world politics, sports. To no avail: the dot is not impressed. Then the unimaginable happens: when almost giving up, the line, using great concentration, becomes able to make angles!

What follows next is what makes this little book a great book: the enthusiastic line makes more and more angles in a chaotic frenzy, until... it realizes that chaos without order leads nowhere. It stops, straightens itself again and it discovers that freedom is not a license for chaos. From then on, life changes for the line: exercising great control and virtue, it discovers a new world:
For months he practiced in secret. Soon he was making squares and triangles, hexagons, parallelograms, rhomboids, polyhedrons, trapezoids, parallelepiped, decagons, tetragrams and an infinite number of other shapes so complex that he had to letter his sides and angles to keep his place. Before long he had learned to carefully control ellipses, circles and complex curves...

Ah, the virtue of the discipline of Mathematics! The beauty of its exact angles and dimensions. The rhythm, art and music of what it is able to create, using exercise and order! I will refrain from spoiling it completely for the new reader, but let me quote his final "moral of the story": to the vector, the spoils. This type of humor is the best!

The back jacket, after telling us that the author, among other things, runs a support group for negative numbers (one can glimpse Mr. Juster's opinion on the state of the culture in the 60s) mentions an award winning film, and I found it on You Tube. I was happy to see that that the screenplay was also written by the author but I warn you that the book is much better. This new edition has wonderful graphics and some different pictures as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely book for all ages
I love this book, my father gave it to me when I was a little girl and I lost it. I bought it again, used, same edition, to keep my memories and bought a new one for my son. A different way to take a look at relationships, shapes and creation.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Dot and the Line
I don't know why, but I was under the impression that this was a children's book. It's not. It's a math lover's book. The book itself was ridiculously hard for me to find, so I was glad when I finally got my hands on it, but again, huge letdown that this isn't a quirky little kid's book about dots and lines and basic geometry. The font is difficult to read at times, although the design quality, simplistic as it is, is superb. The story itself is pretty simplistic, but so very complicated in its simplicity. The puns, the symbolism, make for a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent, easy to follow
Having never really followed a course in a classroom, I have always tried to find books that are suitable for self-study. This book does an excellent job in that quarter. This is an excellent book for physicists looking for a familiar notation. Various subjects are treated rigorously and in an engaging manner. Definitely recommended for self study.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent if you have some background beforehand
This is an excellent book if you have a little background beforehand of the topics covered in this book. Though authors try to cover the topics right from the beginning and they do it quite well, I couldn't benefit much from it as I had not studied the topics covered in this book before. I had to go back to the text books to study each of the topics and then I hope to come back to the book again. I really wouldn't blame the authors, as the topics they are trying to cover in one chapter are full fledged one-semester courses each. It is not easy to cover one semester course in one chapter.
The bottomline is - There is no way to by-pass your undergrad textbooks. if you've studied those before, this book will work very good for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars readable and elegant account of mathematical physics
Dennery and Krzywicki is somewhat unusual in the sense that it puts noticeable emphasis on the mathematical formalism and it
strives to give a broader picture of each topic instead of tedious algebraic manipulations for solving certain special problems that might not be of interest to everyone.

Moreover, the authors do not try to cover a very broad spectrum of topics and rather focus on the formal aspects of fewer mathematical subjects. Altoughthe book`s lacking of sections on group theory and differential geometry might be seen as glaring omissions, it excels didactically in all the topics it touches upon. Especially, its treatment of complex analysis and orthogonal polynomials is absolutely exceptional.

For those who want to have a reference work that contains almost every standard topic at senior undergraduate/beginning graduate level while not taking the mathematical elegance and rigor as a priority, Arfken`s text would be a better choice. For more advanced and up-to-date account of mathematical methods, I would recommend Hassani`s (Mathematical Physics) or Szekeres`s texts.

All in all, I find this text as an excellent work on graduate level mathematical physics and refer it constantly for my work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much in too-little space.
I would only recommend this book to people already fairly well-versed in the topics it covers. In this book, the authors attempt to cover FAR TOO MUCH material for such a short text.As a result, the reader ends up confused and with a feeling that the author isn't telling them NEARLY everything he knows, even about the basics. The book's coverage of complex analysis is truly pitiful, and I would recommend A Course of Modern Analysis by Whittaker and Watson, even at the much higher 60 dollar price, as a useful source on this topic.Concerning such topics as Lebesgue integration, Hilbert Space, and orthonormal bases--consult good books on real-analysis and/or functional analysis rather than this book.Perhaps the author's greatest mistake is the book's complete lack of excercizes and it's few-and-far-between, weak examples of applications to problems. That said, the reason I still gave this book three stars is that it is good in one way--namely, as a reference for those who already know the material.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book
I strongly recommend this book! I am university lecturer and I was using it over recent years as a main source for the course
"Mathematical Methods in Physics". The material is well chosen,
supplemented with good examples which illustrate interesting and
non-trivial issues in an accessible for a student way.
It is a safe and a good buy! ... Read more

Product Description

This tried-and-true text from Allyn Washington, the pioneer of the basic technical mathematics course, is intended for a two- or three-semester course and is taught primarily to students who plan to pursue technical fields. The primary strength of the text is the heavy integration of technical applications, which aids the student in pursuit of a technical career by showing the importance of a strong foundation in algebraic and trigonometric math.

1-0 out of 5 stars wrong order from supplier
Even though I entered the right ISBN for this book i recieved the edition that was without the calculus section, at this time I have to turn to another supplier to get the correct book. The only positive note is that the book was delivered earlier than scheduled, but given that the book is wrong i will have to send it back for a refund.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably bad text book
This textbook launches right into it, with no real introduction to relevant mathematics. It begins with differentiation of boring terms like real, imaginary, irrational and rational numbers. The student, unless already an accomplished mathematician with no need for this book, is overwhelmed with complex terms and definitions. It's like a mathematician wrote this book. Ideally, a person with skill at translating these convoluted terms of math should be writing the text portion, but it seems as though that's not the case here. The chaos continues into the exercise portion of the book, which hosts problems such as:

"In an electric circuit, the reciprocal of the total capacitance of two capacitors in series is the sum of the reciprocals of the capacitance. Find the total capacitance of two capacitances of 0.0040 F and 0.0010 F connected in series."

and...

29. "If a and b are positive integers and b is greater than a, what type of number is represented by the following?"

**(a) b-a *************(b) a-b*********(c) b-a/b+a (fraction w/o horizontal bar)***

the answers in the back of the book state that: (a) is positive, (b) is negative, and (c) is "a positive rational number less than 1"

All the problem (#29) states is that a and b are both positive, so how can value be attributed to them when no value is given? Unbelievable...

Anyway, if you are forced to get this awful textbook then you might want to point out the seemingly infinite discrepancies therein to your teacher/professor. For me, I believe that this textbook is going to keep me from doing the best I can do since it confuses and frustrates me. I hope you (student) aren't required to use this 1000+ page muddling paperweight. Good luck if you are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Math book
This book came to me in perfect condition, it looked practically new! I got it in great time, a few days before expected. If I were to buy another book, it would probably be from the same site. Great, great service!

5-0 out of 5 stars great service
The seller was quick to respond to my emails and offered a refund due to length of time in receiving the book. I will do business again with seller. Book was in exact condition as stated.

1-0 out of 5 stars Watch what you are buying!
I bought this book for my brother's math class. The book finally arrived (after 8 days) and is in great condition, but there is one big problem. The 'MyMathLab' Series wording is misleading, in that the book did not come with the program attached. Upon examining the description further, I realized that it actually states that the book "may have the Program attached". That word 'may' covers their butt for when someone like me orders a book trusting that I will get what I order, and don't get what I order. The book is absolutely useless for someone who needs the MyMathLab Cd. Fortunately, my brother ended up not needing it, or it would have been returned much faster than it was received. For the BIG LIE, it only deserves one star. ... Read more
