Emails have been sent but no response!Supposedly the book has been shipped but should it take a month to get here.And why doesn't anyone respond to email requests for update, tracking, etc.

Great help in a proofs class.
I had this book for a discrete math class about 10 years ago. I'm glad I held onto it. It's been great for a proofs class which uses a completely indecipherable text (A Transition to Advanced Mathematics). The text has answers for odd problems. The solution manual for the 4th Edition is still out there, I got a copy a month ago thru Amazon. The solutions are fully answered and mostly in English. A great combo if you're in a proofs/intro to higher math class.

Actually delivers in a readable way
After having had a bad result from other Ronald L. Graham, Erdos on Graphs : His Legacy of Unsolved Problems, books and articles. I was surprised with this book. I think that Dr. Knuth seems to turn what he touches to gold? I kind of wish I had read this one several years ago when
I wasn't as familiar with the material.
I was amazed to find the recursion for the Eulerian numbers of the second type and a host of very useful identities as well.

Great, great math book ...
How often do you get to have two of the giants of mathematics Graham and Knuth co-author (with Patashnik) a book like this - even suitable for high-school students?

Don't let the binding or whatever fools you, this is a serious math book and serious thinking is required.The material is broad and interesting.I think the book can be used as a supplement text to any of the discrete math/algorithm course (or just leisure reading).It will serve you years to come.Extra bonus - the marginal notes.It may be annoying to you or not but I found it funny at times.

I echo the same feeling as some of the readers here - keep this one always within reach.This is a future classic!

really good book, some times it's bit hard to comprehend, but I'm enjoying the struggle.

Long Live Concrete Mathematics!
I had the pleasure of taking the course "Concrete Mathematics" with Ron Graham as an undergrad engineering student at Princeton University in the late 1980s, and in retrospect it was quite possibly the highlight of my academic career. Likewise, this text has a cherished spot in my bookcase even to this day. The material is challenging, sometimes downright frustrating, but good stuff nonetheless... and as others have noted, very useful! The skills gained are specifically tailored for application in fields such as computer science, really a number of disciplines; and complement what one learns in the more "standard" math courses. How many academic texts have become must-haves even beyond your college years? For me, only this one. I'd give it fifteen stars if I could.

A difficult but worthwhile mathematics text
This book's title can be misleading. I would say it is more of an advanced textbook on the mathematics that is a foundation for computer science than a foundational book on the mathematics of computer science. I think this misreading of the title and thus the book's content is what is behind much of the heartache that readers have when trying to tackle it. This book expands on the "Mathematical Preliminaries" portion of "The Art of Computer Programming" series of books by Knuth, and thus this book has a style much like that series of books. The book is complete and clear, but it is also densely packed with lots of theory and proofs and will require much effort and time to understand well. It is really not meant to be an applied mathematics textbook at all. I show the table of contents next. Note that there are exercises at the conclusion of each chapter with solutions in the back of the book. However, most of the exercises are not so simple that you can just glimpse at the solution and figure out how to get from A to B. I recommend it if you have the time. It can really bring out thoughts and the beauty of mathematics that you may not have considered before.

This book is very thick and heavy but is very detailed. It also came with an access code to connect to the internet to receive more detailed help if I needed it. It is used for Math 121 and 122.

The "little red book" that beats the others
Prof. Gowers packs only the most essentially juicy pieces of mathematics between the covers of this small book that fits comfortably into the back pocket of your jeans.This book is deceptively small and curiously strong.Only dedicated self learners need buy this book; as it is not written with any type of entertaining prose--it's "all business" from page 1.However, this "teaspoon of rigor" helps the rest of math go down.Oddly, Amazon.com does not include a preview for it but here is the table of contents as copied from Oxford's site for the Very Short Introduction series.(To: Prof. Gowers & OUP--outstanding job, keep it up)

Concise, not Simple - Elegant like a simple black dress
Professor Timothy Gowers starts with the need for models and ends with the usefulness and necessity of estimation.The body of the book gives the flavor, the value and the connectedness of Proofs, the calm resolutions of infinity and the impact of changes in dimension and Geometry.

No.Not a problem-based course.Not a history lesson.No sexy examples.Little mention of the titans.Yet the point of doing math, its constraints and pathways, would strike anyone who reads the book.Whether high school students would get it.I'm not sure.The maturity in the words and the totality of the immersion within its few pages is sublime.In knowing that exact answers are rarely found, but knowing the boundaries of the answers and their closeness to actual mimics our own lives.

This would be a must read in a non-ADHD world.

Gowers also wrote the Princeton book on Math.The professor is a Fields medal winner.

Great Insights to Math
I've always loved math, but I've always had difficulties explaining to people why they should care about math.While this is by no means a complete overview of the basics of the subject since there is far too much to cover, it does provide a lot of meaningful insights as to why Mathematics is interesting.It's a very pragmatic approach that does away with romanticism while not condensing the material to something overly dense.This book is a great little book on the wonders of math.

This book gives hints of what advanced maths is about
When I started reading this book I kept putting it down to extend the pleasure of reading it. It makes sense of why some things don't matter in maths. It even seems to confirm that infinity does not exist, while still being a powerful tool. Any person who wants to gain an insight of mathematical knowledge could not do better than read this book. They will gain an appreciation of advanced maths without having to believe or understand it. I don't think the concepts could be expressed more clearly or more simply. However even the unquestionable ability of Timothy Gowers could present hyperbolic geometry in a form that gives credibility to the topic. Of course he is only telling us, he didn't invent it.
I have found if a student can understand fractions, they can understand geometry,trigonometry, algebra and calculus. I don't think any one knows how people lift their skills from tangible to abstract mathematics but this book makes ordinary people aware of the vast challenges and beautiful fields. But beauty is like the numbers, they are both abstract adjectives and can not exist by them selves. This book shows us that that doesn't matter.
After this the next step to enlightenment is The Princeton Companion to Mathematics which was edited by Timothy and displays the same simple clarity. It has also been reduced from $142 to $66 ... Read more

boyer 2nd edition
I picked up this and Burton's similarly named book, and I just wanted to make a few comments and comparisons of the two.

First off, both are excellent reads, and although they cover the same subject they approach it in two different manners.Boyer's text takes the style of a history book to approach the topic.It often focuses on the people and on the time period, commenting on political/cultural going-on.Its an enjoyable book to read, almost in the sense of reading a novel.Usually the mathematics is brought up in the text, but most of the proofs and derivations are often glossed over.Possible many of those mathematical details were in the questions that are no longer at the end of the chapters.But I found missing those details to be somewhat frustrating.

Conversely Burton takes the approach of a mathematics textbook that follows the story line of history.Its filled with proofs and examples, but isn't quite as rich in historical content.Each chapter ends with numerous "homework" problems, often times relating to specific solutions to a problem found by different mathematicians.

Both are excellent books, but depending on your personal taste and interests you may prefer one approach over the other.If you are looking to sit down and work through historical mathematical problems, Burton is probably right for you.If you want to cozy up and imagine what life and thought was like throughout different times in civilization, Boyer is probably your answer.

it never arrived
I would like to review this product but it has been a month since I ordered it and it has not arrived yet.I needed it for a class I am taking so it was a real problem not having it.

Intriguing Book
Practically any page you open this book to presents fascinating insight into some step in the development of mathematics.

A history of PURE Mathematics
An interesting exposition of the history of mathematics up to the mid-20th century, but the author's attitude is somewhat irritating.I would describe him somewhat of a "purist fundamentalist".His denigration of the contributions of applied mathematicians shows throughout the book.His best praise for someone is "so and so did not only contribute to applied mathematics", as if pure mathematics is the superior art.

Nevertheless, the book is an interesting read and the exercises are full of interesting mathematical puzzles.A word of caution is that the reader needs some college-level mathematics to understand much of the book, despite its being written in simpler language.Some of the latter chapters also get confusing since he talks about 5 mathematicians at any one time, jumping from the contributions of one to another in mid-sentence, then going back to someone else described earlier.It would have been more helpful if his sections were better-defined and had titles.Could also use an update to the 21st century.

Usefulness
Excellent organization and coverage.Type size limits effectiveness for practical reference on a routine basis. Subject matter being oriented toward those accustomed to frequent reference should serve as guide. ... Read more

not worth a penny
book is a waste of time.better off buying materials from ets.just used for 2010 praxis 0061.got 85 90 and 82 on each of the practice exams in this book.thought i was good.then exam was like stepping in front of a bus.praxis exam wasnt that bad but the practice exams are not representative of what you will see on exam.these practice exams were too easy, which to me is a waste of time.the 3 practice exams = 6 hrs you could be doing something useful.

Not very helpful
The CliffsTestPrep Praxis II:Mathematics Content Knowledge Test book was not very helpful.I would not recommend it if you are trying to prepare for the Praxis II math test.It lacks examples in the sections reviewing math content.If you are like me and learn best by looking at examples (like math textbooks do) then this book is not for you.All the concepts were talked about in theoretical terms and they did not include practice problems for each idea.The only problems in the book were found in the practice tests.The practice tests were good, a little easier than the actual questions on the exam, but not by much.I ended up needing to find and use other resources to help prepare for the test.I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

Might as well just let the ETS mf's bleed you dry
Look, you've paid 80 or whatever stinking bucks to take the test (plus the registration fee) and you're career is riding on passing this test. Why skimp and by this cheap knockoff version? The cliff's practice tests, as stated ad nauseam here, are just too easy. The actual test is in fact quite challenging even though the covered subject matter is the same. The actual questions are much more complex than the Cliff's examples. ETS has one small sample test of 25 questions on their website for free, plus they will of course sell you examples of previous full tests- because the SOB's haven't made enough money off of you already. But at least you are getting the real deal. The review in the Cliff's book is useless as it is already available for free on the ETS website. I could see buying this as a means of jumpstarting your study process- but please- do not stop with this. You will regret it- unless of course, you know your s--t already. But then you don't really need the stupid book in the first place.

Hated it.
This book was exceptionally watered-down.The practice tests are MUCH easier than the actual exam.When I took the exam, there were only two formulas provided on the formula sheet, and one was De Moivre's Theorem, which this book only devoted a paragraph to.The book made it seem as though many formulas would be provided with the test, which were not.Only rely on this book if you have to cram and want to fail.

Just like some people, this is an OK review
This book is a good way to start reviewing for your Praxis II Math.However, just like some of the reviewers here, I agree that the three practice tests were too easy compared to the real test.I bought additional practice tests online that were of or similar to the test difficulty level.

I took the test on March 13, 2010.The test was difficult.I was expecting some calculus integration and easy matrix problems that you can just pop in to your T1-83, but I did not have those kinds of problems in this month's test.I do recommend for test takers to review log/ln/e^x problems involving decay/exponential growth, creating a trig graph (all six) with phase shifts, and functions because they had some hard questions regarding those topics.

Good book
Very good book!We homeschool and I originally thought it was written for 3rd-4th graders, it is much farther above than that.But it will be helpful as we continue.Very good real-life examples of how to use math.
Fast delivery, good condition.

Misleading title!
This book is not for true math haters, who would probably prefer a book on another subject.Why my parents got me this book when I said that I hated math, I'll never understand.Worst present ever.

I read this book in my childhood and now once again.I always liked the other book, "Math for Smarty Pants" much better, and still do.That book contained a bit of cute, quirky storytelling, with the reappearing characters in the comics as well as the Pig Eyes.This book, while just as quirky and does take math in a new light, doesn't have the hook the first had.Don't get me wrong, it was a great read and I'm sure it would do wonders for reluctant math students, but it is certainly not the best Marilyn Burns has to offer.The other thing, and there is a note in the back about it, is the lack of answers.Many questions are posed to problems that just can't really be solved at the given time, but you're left with no answer, not even a hint.This is quite bothersome.

Not too syked
I was not very syked when I got this book.After reading so much about it I thought it would be a good buy for my daughter who I have trouble getting to enjoy or even be interested in doing well in math.It is written to the student, which I thought was odd.And is aimed at a higher age group than she is (7 yrs).I just don't have time to read so much about it and play the little games etc.Very disappointed.

Zany and fun
I, like some other reviewer, got this book around 15 years ago - a Scholastic Book Club purchase.I didn't hate math at the time (certainly don't now!), but the title was intriguing.The book was a lot of fun!I love the illustrations and the fact that most of the text is in that handwriting font style (I think).It's very informal and makes fun of adults.There ae all these funny, crazy pages with topics such as how to get close to a pigeon or how many popcorn kernels it takes to fill up a room or your mouth (or something).There are also several games - ideas for tutors, teacher, parents...Topics don't get drawn out so long that a kid can't pay attention, and you can learn about stuff you wouldn't normally talk about in adding and subtracting class.Basically, you can learn math and logic in a nice, fun, comfortable manner.I hope this book is still at my parent's house. ... It's what you pay for
Could have found it for cheaper but it does the job. Has all the pages (currently) so it's really all I need.

Awesome resource
I used the 5th edition of this text in my homeschool resource with my daughters, then gave it to my 12 year old gifted niece to use before she took the SAT early. It helped her greatly. I now am tutoring a young man who needs math help to get his GED, and knew this was the book I needed to help him. Loads of practice, and detailed explanations in bite sized chunks that do not overwhelm. Having many of the answers make it a great book to use for practice and self-study, as well.

Textbook order

Helpful support for class plus future reference materials
I used this text in junior year for a one-semester advanced math class. However, this is the biggest textbook I have owned- little of it is applicable to any one class. However, it is fairly clear and readable as mathematics texts go and I have found it to be an excellent reference for independent use afterwards. It explains many useful techniques for confronting ODEs, PDEs, fourier analyses, and introductory complex analysis. It is clear enough to start practice problems without a professor having to tell you how any problems can be solved. It does not have the most detail, but it shouldn't be- It is a huge comprehensive book, and for further details you probably need a very specialized source anyway.

Good book
The book was everything I ever hoped for in a book.It fulfilled all of my textbook needs for differential equations.It even has numbers inside!!! The book arrived in near pristine condition and will remain so because of its importance in my academic endeavors.

Math textbook never received
I bought this book via amazon from seller Brenton Smith.
I never received the book.About a month after I ordered
the book, I got a box which had been opened (and resealed)
before it got to me and no longer contained the book.
I verified that seller did drop it of at USPS in California
for shipment to South Carolina.There was a USPS label on
the box saying they had opened it and resealed it.No
one seems to know what happened to the book.

I suppose the problem is the USPS and not the seller; hard
to say for sure.

Very Good

The Nature of Mathematics(10th Edition)
Terrific book on the fundementals of mathematics, and a detailed background to further build your knowledge base. Highly recommended. 17 Chapters starting with "Problem Solving" and working up to "Fundemental Calculus." Easy to read, with illustrations and many examples to accompany the text.

Nature of Mathematics 11th edition
Problem is they sent the 10th edition which is very different from the 11th edition. And when I sent a request for the correct one, noone replied. I still have not heard from anyone. Customer Service for Dummies says you at least reply.

Schizophrenic material levels, highly non-linear difficulty within chapters
I am required to use this book in my courses as a teacher.That and the surprising decent Cengage online materials are the only reasons I am using this book.

The Nature of Mathematics(NM) both goes too slowly in some sections, in other sections too quickly and doesn't appear to have any clear overall focus. The beginning of each section will have you thinking it is a basic introductory algebra / precalc book. Covering such material as simplifying expressions or doing basic volume & area formulas.Then bam! There will be something on graph theory or advanced statistics.There is little use for such advanced material without some sort of introduction of preceding topics. However the book dwells on the very basic and the very advanced but never in the middle.Leaving me to create material or have students struggle to connect the dots.

The provided answers in the Instructor's Manual are in a word: trash.Answers are not formatted in any way, shape or form. They occur inline... in one continuous line that has no delineating breaks. All the answers run into one another making any answer very hard to find.And when you do find it, there is literally no explanation of how to arrive there, at least for most of the problems.There is simply a stated answer.

The actual lessons themselves are OK and do well at hitting the mark for the material level in that section, but again... difficulty between sections is all over the map.

The redeeming feature of the book is access to the online Cengage learning materials, which are quite useful for directing study and explaining questions for students who are more self-directed.As well as providing a different way in obtaining the material.

Favorite basic math study guide
I have tutored a great number of students in math.Most of these students (even ones who have progressed to Pre-Calculus and beyond) are lacking an understanding of basic mathematics (or have long since forgotten).For adult students who have been out of math class for 20 years or more, especially if they consider themselves to be poor math students, I prefer to start at "the beginning".

That's where this book comes in.It covers whole numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), fractions (prime numbers, factoring, operations), decimals (converting to/from fractions, operations), percents (converting to/from decimals or fractions, word problems, ratios and proportions), negative numbers, algebraic expressions (translating from words into symbols, exponents, solving), polynomials (factoring binomials, quadratics, and trinomials), linear equations (ordered pairs, graphing, slope, solving systems of equations by elimination or substitution, quadratic equations (standard form, roots and factoring, quadratic formula, completing the square), sequences and series (arithmetic, geometric), geometry (lines and angles, constructions, relationships, parallels and transversals, congruence theorems, circles, polygons, similar figures), measurement of geometric figures (areas of quadrilaterals/triangles/circles, Pythagorean theorem, volume and surface area of solids, metric system), graphs, probability (permutations, combinations), and trigonometry.

I particularly like the discussion of "completing the square" as this topic is usually not well discussed in modern math textbooks (leaving students thoroughly confused about a fairly simple technique).There is also a nice discussion of geometric constructions, which I remember vividly from ninth grade geometry, but have yet to meet a student in the past ten years who has even heard of this (although I had a great, tough teacher).

I am currently using this book to prepare an adult student for the Accuplacer exam (math placement exam in college), but have a reference copy for myself as well.I believe it would be useful for homeschool families, adults taking a math class, and anyone who wants a good reference of the most relevant math topics.

If there is a better, all-around beginning math book, I haven't found it.Highly recommended.

Review of Mathematics Made Simple
I first borrowed this book from my local library for use with a high school student that I was helping. I had forgotten (or never learned!) some of the concepts that I needed to help him with. i found that this book provided clear, easy to understand explanations for the material presented, so i decided to buy a copy for myself. I recommend it highly.

Mistakes abound, not a good book
This book is ok for a review... if you have already learned this stuff long ago and understand the CONCEPTS very well.

There are several errors in this book. Some are surprisingly simple. For example, page 26 has a list of prime numbers. They list 45 as a prime number. Page 38 has a demonstration that uses wrong numbers. How can an editor allow such blatant errors?
If you dont already know math, this book could lead you astray. Of course, I only did the first 2 chapters.

Amazing teaching resource
As a fourth and fifth grade teacher I was always under the impression that CGI was only for Kindergarten through third grade.However, once kids started filtering into my class who had recieved CGI instruction, I was blown away!Their critical thinking and ability to solve math problems (all the different types of word problems that the book recommends)was the most incedible thing I had ever seen students do. I immediately read this book and even went through some workshops and training through my school district.

The book explains the different types of math problems contexts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, which most college of education programs do not include.For example: when creating subtraction word problems we need to pose some where the start is unknown (x - 5 = 6), some where the change is unknown (11- x = 6), and others where the result is unknown (11-6= x).When posed in a word context, contrary to our beliefs, students ARE able to reason through the problems and solve them.The book teaches you what types of solutions to expect from your students and how to implement CGI in your classroom.

When starting CGI for the first time, I highly recommend playing around with a few problem types at first so you do not get overwhelmed.It is a lot of fun and you can learn a lot about how your kids think if you just DON'T TELL THEM HOW TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS, but let them explore and be critical thinkers. :)

200 pages missing on the book. The policy makes me pay for shipping and receive only 1/2 of the value of the book
200 pages missing on the book from 134 to 253 - Chapters XVI to XXX. Ashame! I would like to return and the policy said that it will be only paid half of the price + I have to assume shipping costs.
With the money I spend buying books in amazon, I think this is a poor solution. Janet

Horrible edition
When an editor simply republish something out of copyright protection, the only thing he has to do is to copy the pages, all the pages. If he just do that the client will be happy. That editor was incapable of doing that simple thing. Some pages from Bertrand Russell's book are *missing*. This is simply infuriating and absolutely inexcusable. To add insult to injury, the font is so degraded as to make the reading difficult. A double rip-off.

Classic
If you are looking for a book to curl-up with for a few years, this is it.

Excellent Introduction to Mathematics and its Conceptual Structure
This is an excellent introduction to the fundamental principles and the core concepts of mathematics.There is no need to be mathematically inclined or a mathematical specialist to gain significantly from reading this book.Serious students of mathematics, logic, intellectual history, or philosophy will also gain significantly from its lucid and sharp explanations, and Bertrand's ability to question and challenge and manipulate even the most presumed unchangeable fundamental categories of mathematics.

This book is cogently written and is for the serious student and reader (yet there is no new mathematical or logical symbol system that needs to be learned, like in his and A.N. Whitehead's Principia Mathematica).A consistent theme throughout is on the philosophical nature of mathematical knowledge.
