5-0 out of 5 stars A bird-eye's view of mathematics with history
Mathematics has its own beauty if you can look at its big picture. Just a few books can draw on your mind this broad picture. So "Mathematics for the Nonmathematician" is the one that you've come to expect to observe mathematics story in its entirety and beauty. Some parts of the book, i.e the notion of derivative, have been made clear in plain English even better than ordinary college textbooks. So written almost 50 years ago, this book still retains its freshness. So why don't you become the one who understands mathematics even better?

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have.
Plain and simple- this book is a must have! I cannot sing enough praise of Morris Kline's composition. His pages have really has helped me put the world of mathematics and science into a comprehensive perspective.

Shipping was fast and reliable. I will definitely seek service for future business.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair
Mathematics for the Nonmathematician is a fair read. Somehow, it feels a lot more a suitable book for anyone wishing to become a mathematician but isn't sure what it is like. There is some good stuff to learn from, and sometimes, there are worked out solutions to problems in almost every chapter. All in all, you can't go wrong with Mathematics for the Nonmathematician.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mathematics For The Mathematical Junkie
A spectrum exists in the books written by or about mathematicians and mathematics, and this spectrum is heavily weighted at the extremes. At one end, we have books purely verbal, descriptive and, more often than not, hagiographic in their descriptions of great mathematicians and their discoveries. - I suppose one could denominate these as mathematics groupie books. At the other end of the spectrum, we have straightforward mathematics textbooks, rather dry and boring, which roll off the presses with the regularity of the academic terms. To split the difference, to write a literate, narrative book on mathematics, is to attempt something akin to the labours of Hercules and, in the end, impossible to do perfectly, rather like trisecting an angle.Kline, however, does a bang-up job here, and approaches the limit - so to speak - of what is possible.Good show, Morris! But, as many other reviewers have made clear, this book should have printed across its cover the words above the entrance to Plato's Academy: "Let no man ignorant of mathematics enter here."It is a bit of a catch-22 for someone who wants to learn mathematics but is put off by textbooks; you really have to already possess a fluency in the mathematical tongue, to possess a flair for the subject, in order to appreciate the sweep of this really quite grand book. Some pages of the book are simply equation followed by equation leading to a satisfying simplification or representing a derivation. If you can't follow these steps - sometimes quite involved - then you simply won't arrive at the "Aha!" moments which are the chief delight of this book.To quote Kline, "In his wisdom, Thales perceived what we shall perceive as we follow the story of mathematics, that the obvious is far more suspect than the abstruse."The abstruse insights in which this book abounds can only be reached by a competent grasp of mathematical methodology.

That being said, Kline is a whimsical and almost lyrical writer - a bit of a shocker for a book on mathematics! He has a wry wit which he gives full rein to herein. In describing the Greeks and their obsession with astronomy, he observes, "The problem of finding the design of planetary motions continued to engage the minds of the Greeks, possibly because they were not distracted by the `heavenly' stars of stage, screen, and radio with whom many modern minds seem preoccupied."His prose is rich in such quips. The book is actually a lark to read at points.

But the heart of the book is unvarnished mathematics - with which I have a slight problem. He covers the derivation of trigonometric functions splendidly, as well as their uses, as well as the kinetics, or mathematics of motion. But his account of the calculus is rather sparse for my taste.Any treatment of derivatives and integrals without mention, account or derivation of the fundamental theorem is, to my mind, lacking.Further, his derivation of the quadratic formula is absurdly complex and takes pages. It is true, as one reviewer noted, that most students are only presented with the equation and not given its derivation. But the derivation is - comparatively - simple.I worked it out on my own when I was in school, and it need only cover one page, at maximum.

The book is really quite an achievement. But I'm only giving it four stars because it is extremely uneven:No fundamental theorem of the calculus but reams about projectile motion etc.As a bonus, I'll tack on as a comment, once the review is posted, Kline's mischievous proof that 2=1 for the prospective reader to see if he can suss out the flaw in it.If the mathematics leaves you stymied this is not the book for you.On the other hand, if you follow the mathematics quite easily, but are left baffled and staring at the page, determined to suss out the mathematical solecism embedded in it, then you poseess just the sort of questing mind that will delight in this tome!

5-0 out of 5 stars All Asians, not only mathematicians or scientists should read this book
Asians did not develop science or mathematics as Greeks did. People here in Korea are still talking about ancient things while Galilleo and Newton solved problem hundred years ago. When a friend of mine read this book he cried, because of his long term ignorance of wisdom western tradition made and written in this book. Zhu Si asked his student study nature, exactly the kind of works Galilleo did, but they repeated those teaching without doing experiment. Cofucians are still teaching what Zhu Si said. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Puzzle book
This is an interesting little book for anyone who wants to bend their brain up for a little diversion or just for fun. This book is based on a test that was given to high school students to award the best a chance at a scholarship to college. This is the complete battery of problems that was given (I think minus one or two years that could not be found) to high school students in several schools. Although the problems are "high school level", it is immediately obvious that the level of problems given during this testing was a little more advanced from what is today perceived as high school mathematics.

Very enjoyable book for stretching your mind. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars How the Brain Learns Mathematics
Good overview of the current brain research. Followed up with very practical suggestions on how to support the struggling students in your classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cause for reflection
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.It has inspired me to reflect on my classroom practices and make some changes. From a teacher perspective, I liked that there are some principals that I can apply immediately and easily.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a Suitable College Text
I had hoped to use this book as a college text, but find that there are many unattributed assertions. Researchers are also misrepresentated, as when the author asserts that Piaget did not recognize that young children can subitize. Piaget referred to quantities of four or fewer as perceptual numbers, so he was certainly well aware of this phenomenon. I do find the information from brain imaging interesting. My concern is whether or not I can trust the interpretations, particularly when they are not referrenced. Finally, the readability level is about junior high level--too simplistic for my college courses. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the Market
I have REA's CLEP College Mathemmatics, the Barron's CLEP 10th Edition Guide as well as the Princeton Review's 4th Edition Cracking the CLEP and have to say if there is only one book to own it is this one; the REA book. It seems to be the most thorough out of all three I listed. Second I would go with the Princeton Review but only because of the explanations that it provides are really good but it is vague in covering all the topics that you do actually need to practice for this CLEP exam. The Barron's book is great to have more questions to practice on. But overall the REA had the most detailed information in the book but it happens to be one of the most expensive.

Here is the deal: You don't need the CD's since all the questions are included in the book that are on the CD, however if you are going to buy a book that is used you may want to have the CD so you can ensure that when you take the practice exams you aren't looking at a page that someone made a mark in the book as to what the correct answer is. Or it kind of defeats the purpose.

My recommendation if you are preparing for this exam: I am not the best at math under pressure, meaning when you are being timed and only have 90 minutes to answer 60 questions. Plus, my last math class was 20 years ago in high school! Some questions are easy but most take more than a minute and a half and that is all you get technically if you (pun intended) do the math. I would buy all three books just so you have a bunch of practice questions and the other books used are really cheap...like under a dollar or two!

REA is the book to buy if you want to pass...I did just yesterday as a matter of fact and I couldn't be happier.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic
Very basic and quick review of the topics, ideal for someone who has the knowledge, but needs to refresh it. The bottom line is: there are many better on-line resources and the book is not worth its price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to CELPing College Math
Actually purchased this book for my daughter as she wants to shorten her school time to become a Dental Hygienist in three years instead of four. This book helped her prepare for the Math CLEP test.I would highly recommend it to any student interested in this type of program.I only wish I had known about the CLEP test when I went to college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
Received this book and studied it cover to cover for one week.Took the exam and passed without a problem. This book covered every topic encountered on the actual exam.I had not taken a math class in over 15 years. Now, I was good at math when I was in school...but knew I needed some serious refreshing before taking this test. This book did it for me!The CD is like the real exam and gives excellent practice for the big test.I recommend this book with hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars All You Will Need!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND REA FOR CLEPS! I received almost a perfect score using just this book! And I only studied for two weeks! I plan on using REA for biology next month. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Many of us trained mainly in the humanities and liberal arts may respect mathematics as an essential scientific discipline, but have done very little mathematics themselves and often feel intimidated by its rigors. If you ve ever wondered what mathematicians mean by the aesthetic elegance of their subject, here is your chance to experience firsthand mathematics intellectual pleasures.

Martin Gardner, in his review of Jerry King's The Art of Mathematics, praised King:

"Creative mathematicians seldom write for outsiders, but when they do, they usually do it well. Jerry King, a professor at Lehigh University, is no exception."

For his new book, Jerry P. King, has designed a grand tour of mathematics in ten essential lessons for the general reader who wants to know how mathematics is done. Almost no prior mathematical knowledge is assumed and through lively exposition and lucid explanations real mathematics is made not only palatable, but even enjoyable to the uninitiated.

Professor King begins by establishing two key points: first, all mathematics flows from a few fundamental principles. Second, aesthetic considerations provide both the motivation for mathematics research and the standards for evaluating that research. The book is structured so that the reader gradually builds up an ever-greater skill set as each lesson is mastered.

The essential concepts introduced include symbolic logic, infinity, rational numbers, number theory, real and imaginary numbers, function, probability, calculus, and the building of mathematical models in applied mathematics. Throughout his exposition, King provides brief historical digressions which highlight key developments made by the giants in the field of mathematics.

Eloquently written and clearly presented, Mathematics in 10 Lessons will inspire the reader to go on to learn more and will instill a true appreciation for mathematics as both an art and a science.

3-0 out of 5 stars Basic principles of mathematics
As a mathematics professsor and author, I stress understanding basic principles, using them to solve problems, and reviewing them for examinations. High schools tend to present math as a collection of recipies that students need to master, which is not the correct spirit of mathematics. For this reason, I encourage reading the book. Disclaimer: I did not read the book, and so can only give it 3 stars. What is mathematics? A collection of arbitrary consistent statements. Your job as a student is to understand the ideas. Science is mathematics along with experimental and observational verification.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glorious book
This is by far the best introductory book on mathematics, mathematical method
and mathematical thinking that I have ever read. This is a perfect book for autodidacts
who want to advance from non knowing math at all or knowing mathematical techniques to
truly understanding of the fundamentals of the mathematics and mathematics as a
purest form of thought and as a science.

Dr. King is an enthusiast and a math expert who skillfully and engagingly
introduces readers into the most fundamental and the most important principles
of math. Sections on number theory and origins of calculus are simply fantastic.

I sought this type of a book for the purpose of moving beyond mechanical math,
math for engineers and to get the understanding of the math fundamentals.
To start understanding math to the point where I do not need to memorize anything.

This book gave me exactly that type of understanding. Furthermore, this equipped me
with skills so that I can further delve into a math theory.

I recommend this book to all who want to learn mathematics.

I recommend this book to all who feel scared of math or who "hate" math but who want
to learn this science of sciences.

I recommend this book to all who secretly envy mathematicians for their esoteric knowledge.

I recommend this book to all engineers who are familiar with "mechanical" mathematics
- solving problems and applying formulas, but who want to learn foundations behind
the formula and to appreciate the beauty and the power of the mathematics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lively format and explanations make for a readable survey of basic math principles and aesthetics
Mathematics in 10 Lessons: The Grand Tour deserves ongoing recommendation as a powerful guide to math for any outside the usual field. Its ten lessons are intended for the general reader who wants to know how math is done, but has little prior math knowledge. A lively format and explanations make for a readable survey of basic math principles and aesthetics perfect for those who would appreciate an easy, lively overview. Any general lending library will want this.

5-0 out of 5 stars The necessity to understand mathematics is simple
"Mathematics in 10 Lessons" is on the ROROTOKO list of cutting-edge intellectual nonfiction. Professor King's book interview ran here as cover feature on June 3, 2009.

5-0 out of 5 stars 10 Easy Lessons make the grade
This is a good introduction book. It can be used for quick survey of topics. I used it as a refresh for topics I had some years back but forgot. There are enough worked proofs to satisfy me and a minimum of "proof left as an exercise". For that, I suggest the author create space on his errata website and post all the proofs left as an exercise.
I am an auto didactic and would benefit if the publisher made teacher's guides available on web to avoid printing costs.
Chapter 7 on probability could use additional material on distributions such as Gamma, Exponential, Poisson, and Weibull. Statistics section could use additional material on why Mean, Variance, Skewness, Kurtosis are called 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc Moments and simple proofs.
Calculus should keep what's there but could use additional material such as delta-epsilon graph showing the relation during Limits. Why stop with the derivative Power law? Include some other standard ones with proofs and explanations. A discussion, before differential equations, on related rates would be nice...with all the proof and example trimmings.
All-in-all a wonderful, remarkable book for the material. ... Read more

For each of the subjects, one page is devoted to a brief explanation and the next contains a color picture related to the subject. The images are so colorful and bright that they would even catch and retain the eyes of young children.
Another use of this book would be in high school or college math classes where the subject is the history of mathematics. The descriptions of each of the milestones could serve as the starting point for a paper or a presentation. Finally, it is a book that is just fun to read, the math is not deep, but it is lively and entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Snippets of Math Concepts that Arouse the Curiosity
As an educator, I would highly recommend this wonderful treasure trove of basic information about and insights into the math concepts of God's universe. And, His instruments (the people) who He has inspired to reveal the fascinating secrets about how our (His) world has been assembled and operates. This book fills me with a sense of wonderment and awe. This book is not a theological work, but it is truely a great compilation of and revelation to God's creative wisdom.

A good resource for short answers to those pesky math questions to parents like "What is pi?", "Who figured that out?", "How did they figure that out?"

The world is full of subtle, missed yet important associations with mathmatically explained and/or predictable outcomes.I"m not going to cite examples.Get or borrow a copy of this book and find out for yourself how much you can: learn in just a few minutes; entertain yourself for hours; discover about the world around you.

I've learned a lot from this book, much of which I still can't understand.SO, HOW DID THEY FIGURE THAT OUT?!?!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Would Lisbeth Salander Use "The Math Book"?
Lisbeth Salander, the fictional gifted mathematical genius of the late
Stieg Larsson's phenomenal best sellers, "The Girl Who Played with
Fire", "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", and "The Girl Who Kicked
the Hornet's Nest", would have read Clifford A. Pickover's "Math Book" to
understand "Fermat's Last Theorem". Salander is constantly solving
math problems, during her intriguing adventures and that's what lead
me to Pickover's superb book. The great mathematical problems of the
past are explained with clear language, an almost impossible
task in textbooks, and images. This book is a collector's item, to
be used for information, and made part of your library. It will
make you smarter, and will be cherished by all book lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I am not a math person, but I have a son who is. So, when I saw "The Math Book: From Pythagoras to the 57th Dimension, 250 Milestones in the History of Mathematics" mentioned in a homeschooling magazine, I knew it was one I needed to request from my local library. It is truly a fascinating book, and this is from someone who understands relatively little of it. The full page illustrations are beautiful and the text is interesting. Pickover has truly tried to make complex ideas understandable to the lay person. Organized chronologically, it is amazing to read how one discovery has led to another throughout the years. From a Christian perspective, I feel that it is yet more evidence for a God-created world because the mathematical laws that underscore it are so complex that they could never be random. An incredible intelligence created our world. For example, the first entry is on ants. Apparently, Saharan desert ants have built-in pedometers that allow them to count their steps in order to measure exact distances and find their way back home. That is amazing, and that is only the first page of this book. If you love math, you will love this book. If you don't understand complex math, you will still find it fascinating. I don't think anyone can come away from looking at this book without a deeper appreciation for the number systems that regulate our world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Many Interesting New Topics Even If You Have an Extensive Background in Math
I've read a lot of books on recreational math and number theory but still found much of interest in this one.An enjoyable format with each subject getting a one page description or explanation and having a facing page with a beautiful illustration. It's the kind of book to keep handy when you have a spare five minutes to fill. You can read it cover to cover or open it to a random page and be thoroughly entertained. An excellent blend of both the new and the familiar. It has wide-ranging subjects that cut across an amazing swath of math's beauty and mystery. It will appeal to both a math PhD or a fifth-grader with a passing interest. ... Product Description

Studies of teachers in the U.S. often document insufficient subject matter knowledge in mathematics. Yet, these studies give few examples of the knowledge teachers need to support teaching, particularly the kind of teaching demanded by recent reforms in mathematics education. Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics describes the nature and development of the knowledge that elementary teachers need to become accomplished mathematics teachers, and suggests why such knowledge seems more common in China than in the United States, despite the fact that Chinese teachers have less formal education than their U.S. counterparts.

The anniversary edition of this bestselling volume includes the original studies that compare U.S and Chinese elementary school teachers’ mathematical understanding and offers a powerful framework for grasping the mathematical content necessary to understand and develop the thinking of school children. Highlighting notable changes in the field and the author’s work, this new edition includes an updated preface, introduction, and key journal articles that frame and contextualize this seminal work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Look at elementary Math
Just more evidence that our preservice elementary school teacher need more exposure to elementary math. Teachers to be need better courses designed to develop a deep conceptual understanding of number basics. Exposure to basic number theory, set theory, and logic puzzles similar to problems found in MOEMS might spark more interest in these teachers, and they might find the subject enjoyable.

2-0 out of 5 stars China vs US
This book compares Chinese math teachers to US math teachers. Many of the US teachers seem incompetent. This is required reading for a math training I am taking and the teachers in my class are much more competent than this book portrays. The book also does not take into account that in the US "ALL" students are educated in the same schools for K-12.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
As a resource teacher having taught middle school, it is shocking to find so many middle school students who cannot add or subtract fractions, or correctly solve other forms ofbasic math. These students are like"swiss cheese learners." They have so many holes in their mathematical knowledge base. They can't succeed. These students provoke questions, such as, why are so many students unable to transfer from basic algorhythmic thinking to algebraic concepts? What are our elementary school teachers doing wrong? By middle school, most students should be successful at solving basic mathematics. The answers to these questions were found in this book--a book every teacher, principal, and board of educationMUST read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title could be improved
I have the entire set of Schaums books. I used this one before starting my PhD studies in Economics. The Math is a great primer to every doctoral level student. The title of book should be 'Advanced Math for scientists, engineers, economists, and every doctoral student'. The book sells itself short by restricting itself only to natural sciences and engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars a very good review
I got this book to review for my class.. it was really helpful, i had lots of examples and problems and mostly each problem shows off a trick and an important point... i am happy that i got it

4-0 out of 5 stars It is what it is
Good reference for those rare occasions when you need to be able to use a [insert dead Frenchman's name] function.

3-0 out of 5 stars worth the purchase
I used this book as a text for an applied math course. The presentation of the book is well done. The emphasis was on gaining competency through practice and not on proving rigorous theories per se (though some of that is included). The author worked out in detail many example problems that I found to be helpful.

As a caveat, there were MANY typos in the book.A few of the theorems were even stated incorrectly. Some of the answers in the back of the book are incorrect. For at least one homework problem that I know of you are tasked with proving something that is just plain wrong. The end result: lots of wasted time.I found the treatment of linear algebra to be a little outdated; he focuses mainly on properties of determinants and inverses, which these days is not the way to approach applied linear algebra.

I'm more forgiving of these blunders because the book is low priced. All in all it was helpful to me as an aid to learning.

1-0 out of 5 stars The only thing this book has taught me is how short my fuse is
This has to be the worst math book I've ever used. The examples are terrible and very few and far between, and the ones that are there are worded in the most convoluted manner possible.I'm not a math whiz, if I was I wouldn't be using this book to begin with. It's been nothing but frustrating trying to do the exercises at the end of each section as most of them are nothing like the examples shown, and you have to "read between the lines" to try and understand it.I think if you're the type that understands math very well along with a very good understanding of the terminology it may be a decent book, but if you're trying to actually learn this stuff you have my sympathy.

1-0 out of 5 stars thought 8th edition was bad - 9th is worse.
I absolutly hate this book.Does not give good explainations - hard to follow - I actually had to buy other books to explain the concepts in this one to do the homework problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably bad text book
This textbook launches right into it, with no real introduction to relevant mathematics. It begins with differentiation of boring terms like real, imaginary, irrational and rational numbers. The student, unless already an accomplished mathematician with no need for this book, is overwhelmed with complex terms and definitions. It's like a mathematician wrote this book. Ideally, a person with skill at translating these convoluted terms of math should be writing the text portion, but it seems as though that's not the case here. The chaos continues into the exercise portion of the book, which hosts problems such as:

"In an electric circuit, the reciprocal of the total capacitance of two capacitors in series is the sum of the reciprocals of the capacitance. Find the total capacitance of two capacitances of 0.0040 F and 0.0010 F connected in series."

and...

29. "If a and b are positive integers and b is greater than a, what type of number is represented by the following?"

**(a) b-a *************(b) a-b*********(c) b-a/b+a (fraction w/o horizontal bar)***

the answers in the back of the book state that: (a) is positive, (b) is negative, and (c) is "a positive rational number less than 1"

All the problem (#29) states is that a and b are both positive, so how can value be attributed to them when no value is given? Unbelievable...

Anyway, if you are forced to get this awful textbook then you might want to point out the seemingly infinite discrepancies therein to your teacher/professor. For me, I believe that this textbook is going to keep me from doing the best I can do since it confuses and frustrates me. I hope you (student) aren't required to use this 1000+ page muddling paperweight. Good luck if you are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tech Math by Washington
Standard technical institute math book covering everything from (very) basic algebra to basic calculus and differential equations. We used it at Greenville (SC) Technical College for several quarters in the engineering technologies as part of the core curricula.

Also used it for a semester at Clemson for an applied math course in the BSET program in addition to the obligatory 2 semesters of calculus.Covering this whole book in a semester was, shall we say, an adventure.

Suggestion - shop Amazon's new/used department for a discount seller. The retail price on this book demonstrates the phrase "sticker shock".

1-0 out of 5 stars Not much for the money...
If you are a math major or natural math whiz this may be a decent book, but having been out of school for years and having to really work at math this book is pure misery to depend on to learn math. Very few examples and the explanations are unclear and lacking details. Its to bad the schools cannot come up with a better textbook than this. ... Read more

I've taught out of this book for several semesters, since the department requires it.Personally, I wouldn't recommend it.It's way too expensive, and I found the explanations given by the authors lack in some way or another.Students taking this course at any college usually won't receive any credit towards graduation.Having a text book that costs over $50 for such a class is simply criminal.

Amazon generally has really good costs especially when compared to school bookstores.I ended up paying around $80 less for this book on Amazon than from the book store on campus.Considering that is the current edition of the book and that it is the number one used Discrete Mathematics book in the country a great deal for an excellent book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book in not for first year undergraduates...
This book is excellent... It only needs you to have some math proficiency. For example, if you already have taken at least two three math courses in calculus and similar (engineering curricula) this book should not be a problem for you. The application area mentioned within the book is mainly in computer science. But, as every math book I read, it needs you to be patient and spend some time thinking and trying to solve problems your self. This book can be read by undergraduates (in engineering) in their upper years of study.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is.
Every undergraduate student that wants to earn a PhD in economics is usually told to take a set of math courses. These tend to include all the calculus courses, linear algebra, differential equations, real analysis, and mathematical statistics. If you've taken, or are taking all those courses, then this book will seem easy. However their are some things in this book that those courses do not teach. The material on optimization will probably be new to you, particularly the Kuhn Tucker theorem. The book is not too hard, nor is it too terse.I urge anyone who thinks that this book is terse and unmotivated to take a look at Walter Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis. That is a terse book, and even then it is very good. Those who complain that this book is too challenging are simply the mathematical have-nots of economics bitching because they don't like heavy math and don't like that modern economics is a field where you cannot do without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars for students of economics who also really like mathematics
This is a book for students of economics who also really like mathematics.

You may think that this book is similar to Chiang's book Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics, but you would be wrong to think so. The perspectives are different and therefore their "path of guidance" is also different: Chiang explains from the viewpoint of economics, Blume explains from the viewpoint of mathematics. In other words it uses the lens of mathematics to view the landscape of economics.

Therefore Blume's book is more "pure" mathematics than Chiang, i.e. you will learn more about mathematics in Blume's book than in the latter. Whether this is an important difference to you or not depends on how much you like mathematics as a subject and how much you wish to understand it. Don't get me wrong here, Blume's book is still applied mathematics - the mathematics is the means, not the ends. If you are an economist and have not realized it by now, in mathematical economics the methods are choosen to fit the theory, and the mathematics covered is at the discretion of what Economic Tradition holds as crucial for economists to know - it is a hotpot or mishmash of methods and not a true representation of what mathematics really is. So if your aim is to understand mathematics you should not use applied books at all, least of all economic ones, and instead use books such as Apostol's Calculus, Vol. 1: One-Variable Calculus with an Introduction to Linear Algebra (Second Edition) (Volume 1), Spivak's Calculus, 4th edition and similar.

Speaking as an Economics Masters student, either book will prepare you well for advanced studies. Speaking as a person who likes mathematics for its own sake, Blume's book is more rewarding to work with than Chiang. It also made me interested in learning unapplied mathematics as well, and after Blume I decided to study Apostol's books and similar...which leads me to think that maybe I should have majored in mathematics instead.

Anyway, the problem I have had with books like Chiang's is that they were not rigorous enough: if I am to understand and use a method I need to understand more of the details, otherwise I am not convinced of the validity and usefulness of what I am learning, and the picture feels incomplete. Blume's book gave me much of the details I needed - as far as understanding the mathematics behind core economic theory is concerned. It helped me understand mathematics and the structure of economic models better, something I often struggled with after working through less rigorous books.

Even-though the authors state in their preface that it is best if the prospective student already knows a little about calculus and matrix algebra before using the book: the first 9 chapters in the book - over 200 pages! -gives as good a coverage of these topics as any beginner's book that I have seen and worked with. So I would not be concerned if I had no prior knowledge of these topics.

In summary, before I found this book there was a big gap in my mind between the mathematical theory on the one hand and economic theory on the other. This relatively rigorous book helped narrow that gap, but it is by no means a definitive book, for me this book was just the starting point before moving into unapplied studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simon and Blume's Math for Economists
Very good book for those interested in an introductory survey of mathematical methods in economics, practically self-contained.
