Product Description
This volume presents an original treatment of the influence ofdifferent types of vortex fields on the dynamics of solid bodies. Thisis encountered in many ways: flight dynamics, hydrofoil vehicledynamics, rockets and spacecraft dynamics, and satellite dynamics. The contents are divided into eight chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 aredevoted to a synthesis of phenomenological mathematical models ofobjects, for which the consideration of vortex fields plays a dominantrole in the formulation of those models. Chapter 3 deals with thesolution of sets of integrodifferential equations which arise in theanalysis of the dynamics of complex controlled systems. Chapter 4considers the experimental verification of models and the limits oftheir applicability. Chapter 5 analyses the influence of eddy currentson the stability of electromagnetic levitation systems. Chapter 6considers the influence on spacecraft motion of the vortex motions ofa low-viscous liquid in the vehicle fuel tanks. Chapter 7 presentsexamples of a control law for the air-gap stabilization of a magneticlevitation system. Finally, Chapter 8 deals with the generalmathematical model based on magnetohydrodynamics of asolid-low-viscous electrically conductive ferromagnetic liquid. Product Description
This unique electronic book on CD-ROM has an amazing collection of federal documents and resources on advanced high-speed train technology, including MAGLEV (magnetic levitation) and high-speed ground transportation (HSGT).The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) notes: Magnetic levitation (Maglev) is an advanced train technology in which magnetic forces lift, propel, and guide a vehicle over a guideway. Utilizing state-of-the-art electric power and control systems, this configuration eliminates contact between vehicle and guideway and permits cruising speeds of up to 300 mph. Because of its high speed, Maglev offers competitive trip-time savings compared to aviation in travel markets up to 600 miles long - an attractive travel option for the 21st century. The Maglev deployment program was created to demonstrate the potential of a commercial Maglev project in the United States. Section 1218 of the "Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century" created a National Magnetic Levitation Transportation Technology Deployment Program. The program is administered by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), a unit of the Department of Transportation. The objective of the program is to demonstrate high speed maglev technology in commercial service through a project of about 40 miles in length, so that it can be considered later in the century for implementation in a longer distance intercity corridor application. Section 1218 provided $55 million in federal funding for pre-construction planning to identify the most promising project through a competitive process. The Federal funds for planning and construction must be matched 1/3 to 2/3 by state, local, or private contributions. To be eligible for Federal construction funding, each project had to demonstrate that operating revenues would exceed operating costs, and total benefits would exceed total costs over a 40-year period. Applications for projects were solicited from states or their designated authorities, and in May 1999 seven projects were selected to participate in a one-year program of preconstruction planning needed to identify the most promising project. Sponsors of the following projects were given planning grants: Los Angeles, CA; Cape Canaveral, FL; Atlanta, GA to Chattanooga, TN; New Orleans, LA; Baltimore, MD to Washington, DC; Las Vegas, NV to Anaheim, CA; and Pittsburgh, PA. Each of the seven projects submitted a Project Description to FRA on June 30, 2000. The Project Descriptions include: projected environmental effects, costs of construction, equipment, and operations and maintenance; estimates of ridership and revenues; an implementation schedule; operating plans; a management plan defining a public/private partnership that will plan, finance, construct and operate the project; and a financial plan. A multi-disciplined selection review committee from the Department of Transportation reviewed the Project Descriptions received from the seven competing projects. The committee reported to the Secretary on the merits of each project, to assist him in selecting the most promising projects to receive continued federal support for the pre-construction planning. The Department of Transportation selected the Maryland and Pennsylvania projects to continue to the next stage of the program. A Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement was published and distributed on April 20, 2001 that selected the "action alternative" to continue the program as the preferred alternative, and identified the Maryland and Pennsylvania projects for continued evaluation and project development.Contents include: * MAGLEV Deployment Program * Maglev Projects * Current Project Status * Funding for MAGLEV * MAGLEV Legislation and Regulations * MAGLEV Programmatic EIS * MAGLEV Reports * Passenger Rail / High-Speed Ground Transportation ... Excerpt: Superconductivity occurs in certain materials at very low temperatures. When superconductive, a material has an electrical resistance of exactly zero. It was discovered by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes in 1911. Like ferromagnetism and atomic spectral lines, superconductivity is a quantum mechanical phenomenon. It is also characterized by a phenomenon called the Meissner effect. This is the ejection of any sufficiently weak magnetic field from the interior of the superconductor as it transitions into the superconducting state. The presence of the Meissner effect indicates that superconductivity cannot be understood simply as the idealization of "perfect conductivity" in classical physics. The electrical resistivity of a metallic conductor decreases gradually as the temperature is lowered. However, in ordinary conductors such as copper and silver, this decrease is limited by impurities and other defects. Even near absolute zero, a real sample of copper shows some resistance. In a superconductor however, despite these imperfections, the resistance drops abruptly to zero when the material is cooled below its critical temperature. An electric current flowing in a loop of superconducting wire can persist indefinitely with no power source. Superconductivity occurs in many materials: simple elements like tin and alumi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=26884 ... Read more

Product Description

From Peter Pan to Harry Potter, from David Copperfield to levitating toys, there is magic in conquering gravity. In this first-ever popular introduction to “maglev”— the use of magnetic forces to overcome gravity and friction—James D. Livingston takes lay readers on a journey of discovery, from basic concepts to today’s most thrilling applications.

The tour begins with examples of our historical fascination with levitation, both real and fake. At the next stop, Livingston introduces readers to the components of maglev: gravitational and magnetic forces in the universe, force fields, diamagnetism and stabilization, superdiamagnetism and supercurrents, maglev nanotechnology, and more. He explores the development of the superconductors that are making large-scale levitation devices possible, and the use of magnetic bearings in products ranging from implanted blood pumps to wind turbines, integrated circuit fabrication, and centrifuges to enrich uranium. In the last chapters, we arrive at the science behind maglev transportation systems, such as Chinese trains that travel 250 miles per hour without touching the tracks.

Packed with fascinating anecdotes about the colorful personalities who have “fought friction by fighting gravity,” the book maintains accuracy throughout while it entertains and informs technical and nontechnicalreaders alike. With so many new applications for magnetic levitation on the horizon, Rising Force is sure to retain its own magic for years to come.

Product Description
Magnetic levitation technology has shown a great dealof promise for micromanipulation tasks. Due to thelack of mechanical contact, magnetic levitationsystems are free of problems caused by friction, wear, sealing and lubrication. These advantages havemade magnetic levitation systems a great candidatefor clean room applications. In this work, a new large gap magnetic levitationsystem is designed, developed and successfullytested. The system is capable of levitating a 6.5(gr)permanent magnet in 3D space with an air gap ofapproximately 50(cm) with the traveling range of 20mmx 20mm x 30mm. The overall positioning accuracy ofthe system is 60 micro meters. With the aid of finite elements method, an optimalgeometry for the magnetic stator is proposed. Also,an energy optimization approach is utilized in thedesign of the electromagnets.Several control strategies have been proposed for thesystem and the performance of the system has beenexperimentally evaluated. ... Product Description
Magnetic levitation, maglev, or magnetic suspension is a method by which an object is suspended with no support other than magnetic fields. Magnetic pressure is used to counteract the effects of the gravitational force. Earnshaw's theorem proves that using only static ferromagnetism it is impossible to stably levitate against gravity, but servomechanisms, the use of diamagnetic materials, superconduction, or systems involving eddy currents permit this to occur. In some cases the lifting force is provided by magnetic levitation, but there is a mechanical support bearing little load that provides stability. This is termed pseudo-levitation. Magnetic levitation is used for maglev trains, magnetic bearings and for product display purposes. ... Read more

Product Description
This ringbound book and CD-ROM disc set provides a comprehensive guide to maglev train technology and America's new program of high-speed passenger rail travel, the High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Program (HSIPR), announced by President Obama in January 2010. This is the most comprehensive collection of official documents available on maglev train technology and high-speed passenger rail programs. This detailed material is heavily illustrated with color photographs, drawings, tables, and charts. The CD-ROM disc contains over 21,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat software, with dozens of reports about HSR and maglev research. The ringbound book provides reproductions of U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration reports on maglev technology development activities. Contents include: Background on Maglev; Maglev Technology Options; The German Technology; Japanese High-Speed Maglev; U.S. Maglev Technology; Maglev Deployment Program; Maglev Compared with OtherModes; Capital Costs; Costs of Maglev Systems; Cost Comparison with Other Modes of Transportation; Benefits Versus Costs; Transportation Perspective; Economic Perspective: Comprehensive Costs and Benefits; Maglev s Advantages, Disadvantages, and Uncertainties; Potential Advantages; Potential Disadvantages; Uncertainties; Terms and Acronyms; Comparison of Maglev Projects Planned for U.S. and Germany Using Transrapid Technology; Description Of Projects; Summary of Project Differences and Similarities; Comparison of Costs; California High-Speed Rail Authority s Reasons for Proposing Steel-Wheel Rather Than Maglev Technology; CFS Approach to Traffic Congestion Reduction; The Role of Frequency in the Travel Time Comparisons, and much more.Maglev is an advanced transport technology in which magnetic forces lift, propel, and guide a vehicle over a specially designed guideway. Utilizing state-of-the art electric power and control systems, this configuration can reduce or eliminate the need for wheels and many other parts, thereby minimizing mechanical friction and permitting excellent acceleration, with cruising speeds on the order of 300 mph or more. Thus Maglev, if built on alignments that support its highest capabilities, would provide: Passenger comfort and convenience; Matchless center-to-center travel times for city-pairs in the 200-300 mile distance range - for example, about one hour between midtown Manhattan and downtown Boston; and air-competitive trip times at longer trip distances than other high-speed ground transportation systems. Transrapid, a German company, has developed a Maglev technology that is in revenue service in Shanghai, China, where it links the city with its airport. Japan has developed a technologically different system that has reached the point where decisions on its deployment can be made. The United States has authorized a Magnetic Levitation Transportation Technology Deployment Program ( Maglev Deployment Program ) that would demonstrate a relatively short (30-50 mile) Maglev system in commercial service. Projects are currently being planned in four locations: Baltimore/Washington (MD-DC); Pittsburgh (PA); Las Vegas (NV) Anaheim (CA); and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Riverside (CA). The Department of Transportation (USDOT) is awarding $8 billion to states across the country to develop America's first nationwide program of high-speed intercity passenger rail service. Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), these dollars represent an historic investment in the country's transportation infrastructure, which will help create jobs and transform travel in America. The awards will serve as a down-payment on developing or laying the groundwork for 13 new, large-scale high-speed rail corridors across the country. ... Read more
