Description:
Artists making three-dimensional art objects have an idea in their minds about how to illuminate their creations. For museums and galleries to illuminate these objects successfully according to the ideas of the artist, the types of light sources and their locations must be known. To fulfil this requirement, we propose a lighting coordinate database (LCD) to establish the coordinates of light sources. We describe two possible methods of obtaining data for this database: a computer software method and a hardware method. The head of Michelangelo's David is used to test the applicability of the two methods. In the software method, the scanned image of David's head is illuminated on the computer screen and data for the location of light sources are created. In the hardware method, a second set of data is created by illuminating a scale model of David using light emitting diodes (LED). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars No Technique - thin on using shadows for anything
Reviewer Joel (CA United States) is 100% correct: This book's description and all of the other reviews are completely misleading. The book is thin on content at this price range and doesn't even truly cover the subject of "Placing Shadows", and, other then building off of a foundation of the standard 3 point lighting system, it doesn't provide any techniques to do anything with shadows at all.

What it does provide is a good easily understood explanation of color and the measurable aspect of temperature along with definitions of the various existing light bulbs, their properties and color temperatures. But if you are at the stage where you're looking to buy a book to help you with using shadows then you should already know everything this book has to offer on this subject. And if not this isn't the book to get it from.

This book is not what I thought it would be as I was expecting some advanced knowledge on creatively using lights to create shadows that would enhance my productions. What I got was a rehash of the basics of illuminating a subject, with illumination as the key word.

If you want to learn lighting for video go get one of the lesser costing setup books that have page after page of diagrams of different sets and the various positions of where the lights should go.

This is not the book to help you learn about using shadow techniques to enhance your production as it is more a book about light bulbs and their color temperatures.

Oh, yeah, the second edition's cover is completely different and looks like a cheeply produced self published paperback book.

Now I have only one question: Where do I get a refund?

4-0 out of 5 stars Placing Shadows
Placing Shadows in an appropriate title for this book.Shadows are the 3rd dimension of lighting ignored by many video professionals. The book explains in depth, the spectrums and characteristics of different types of light. Most books don't go into these explanations except 400 level college video classes.By doing so, it gives a basis to go on to discussing the many assorted manufactures lights and their practical use.Not just hypothetical lighting situations, but actual sets, from office settings to exercise videos. Also acknowledging, every set is completely different and must be lit by what is necessary to create the look you need.
Additionally this book, described how to set up your monitor by using different color bars and using waveform monitors and vector scopes, something that many college graduates were never taught how to do, like ME! If a student learns and retains everything in this book you will be ahead of all you peers and will understand what is being done on a set when they're in the real world of video.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good info if you want to know how a light bulb is made.
I have a background in photography so using tungsten lighting is not new to me. I thought this book would have more technique then I was led to believe.

It does have some great info on how a light bulb is created and the various parts but is not very fulfilling. this book is not what I thought it would be like and
the reviews from others are misleading.

It goes over various lighting setups, any photography book covers this and skims over ratios. It explains color meters in short detail but it would be great to have more "meat" to hang on to then the author's bad grammar and old sayings. He suggests that you learn by doing. enough about his experiences, show me something I don't know how to do!

If you want to learn lighting for video, this is not the book to buy. If you want to learn about light bulbs and color tempatures of tungsten lights then this book delivers.

I give it a 2 stars because it does have some merit but not in the area of lighting technique. For a really thin book, its not worth the price even if you get a discount.

5-0 out of 5 stars Puts ligth on the life of beginers and pros
I belive this book can be very helpful for people who want to make films, either as a guide to create a nice looking product or as a general idea of how ligth works for the image, this book is a great begeaning in every cinematographer's career. ... Read more

Product Description
This companion to Passive Cooling and Solar Building Architecture (volumes 8 and 9) describes developments in passive solar technology that will save time, energy, and resources in planning for the buildings of the future. It is filled with tips and useful research for architects and designers and includes three substantial chapters on general modeling.

"Passive solar heating works. Properly designed and constructed, it is cost-effective, practical, comfortable, and aesthetic." Balcomb's introductory remarks set the tone for the rest of the contributions, which describe the considerable record of achievements in passive solar heating. Balcomb summarizes and evaluates the era between 1976 and 1983 when most of the major developments took place and highlights the design features that have contributed to effective buildings.

Three chapters cover modeling passive systems (applicable to both heating and cooling), and six chapters focus on the application of passive solar heating, with emphasis on components, analytical results for specific systems, test modules, subsystem integration into buildings, performance monitoring and results, and design tools. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Not a bad read, would recommend.
I don't want to say this is a great book. But after reading 4 other books on heating and this one was by far the best.

Books I've *NOT* enjoyed:
Heating technology: poorly made much to boring to read.
Audel books (2) on heating: old outdated info, that seemed to me, these 2 books had 1950's info and style of writing. And pages of useless info that I can only only be described as filler from the manufacturer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Depending on your background, may be all you need or not nearly enough
I was given this book as a gift just after I started working in the lighting industry, and at the time it gave me a very good overview of various lighting topics. The author spends a good deal of time on the "soft" issues of lighting design: those that tend to be more subjective and perception-based rather than technical.

If you are very new to lighting design, or if you come from an interior design background, I would recommend this book.Other volumes, such as "Lighting Engineering: Applied Calculations" and the IESNA handbook are more appropriate if you deal with the technical/engineering side.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great reference material
For those looking for lighting basics that covers lamping, and the psychology of lighting, "Architectural Lighting Design" serves this purpose with flying colors. However if you are looking for creative solutions to lighting problems this is not the book. "ALD" though still has some helpful tid bits even for those more advanced in lighting design. The section on specifications is very helpful, and very complete, and the section on filling a space with light is an inteligent and thoughtful approach to lighting. Personally I would enjoy a section which covers a few areas that I felt got overlooked; Lighting controls, Green considerations, and the foot candle method, but overall it'sgood book to have in a person's library and might have answers to the questions you are looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know
If you're an interior designer and want to expand your lighting horizons - this is the book to buy. It's very accessible for those who might think lighting is all about wiring. This book gives great instruction on lighting design and well as product. A must have in any designer's library.

1-0 out of 5 stars horrid
I had to purchase this book for my Lighting Design Course as a part of my M. Arch program, and this book has done more to confuse me than to help me.The editing is excruciatingly bad, all of the chapters ramble on and repeat themselves constantly, and it is missing at least one crucial element--an explanation of how to diagram lighting layouts and control systems.Do yourself a favor, and find a different book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best explanation of the lighting design process in print
This is an excellent book. The reasons are these: the process of lighting design is explained with a thoroughness and clarity unseen in other books; the most important points are always accompanied by examples taken from real projects-the author's own or others; the voice of the author is immediate, conversational, and easy to learn from; and, the balance between technical detail and the practical business of getting the (lighting) job done is admirably struck.

Steffy explains the lighting design process in its proper order and with the proper emphasis. He begins by defining the lighting design problem as one grounded in vision-explaining just enough of that fabulously complex process to make the designer aware of the mechanisms by which we visually apprehend the world. How that world is to be seen is defined by the programming phase of a project. In this long section, Steffy shows how psychology, architecture, the requirements of visual work, and many other factors are brought together to define the goals of the lighting project. Each of these aspects is discussed from the designer's perspective and accompanied by unambiguous examples. This first third of the book is probably its strongest section-by the author's design evidently, since it is far more common to plunge into "picking equipment," rather than pause and ruminate about the purposes and goals of lighting for a project.

But the very beginning of the book does not provide much technical underpinning; and so perhaps its only weakness is that the fundamentals are treated at the start with a brevity that may not sufficiently develop a readers' understanding. On the other hand, we are spared the usual inane drawings of candles and spheres, and the often-erroneous analogies trotted out to "explain" things.

The middle third of the book deals with the more technical issues of lighting design: schematic design, daylighting, lamps, luminaires, controls, and design tools.Steffy has chosen members of the architecture and design community for his audience. As such, mathematics has a useful but circumscribed role in the process, and detailed issues managed by electrical engineers are left to those registered professionals.Given that, the coverage is thorough and sufficiently detailed for the reader to leave the text with useful information. The long chapter on lamps is up to date and more than just a recitation of data and characteristics-rather, there is always advice given and experience shared about how different lamps can or should be used. The same can be said of the section devoted to luminaires.

The rest of the book is devoted to the process of getting the lighting design specified, purchased, on the job, and installed. This includes an elaborate explanation of equipment pricing, contract documents, and the practical matters of getting the right equipment to the project. There is no more extensive or thorough an explanation of these important aspects of lighting design in print.

One of the books strongest points is the abundance of examples; there is at least one used to clarify each important point.Absent are the usual hedges and unhelpful generalities about "design;" rather, one finds a bracing, thought-provoking specificity: "do this, not this;" and, marvelous to read, there is nothing imperious about this, for reasons are always given. The examples are particularly important and helpful in the long sections that explain programming and construction documents. In each of these two cases, Steffy offers specific and detailed examples from his own projects. The annotation is extensive and adds the detail that often brings home the point.

Steffy writes in a direct, conversational style that draws the reader into the topic.(The first word in his preface is "Yikes!")The effect is that of being in the presence of someone willing to help, willing to explain things, and who knows what they're doing. This is very important point, since it is a good bet that the book will be used most often for self-study.The modernity of the process by which we learn is acknowledged in the book: there is a continuous sprinkling of Internet addresses where one can find more information. The style, detailed examples, and mechanical layout of the material promote direct understanding. There are none of the usual unsupported recipes and vague injunctions. The directness of Steffy's conversation with the reader helps convey what he knows and how he has applied it to lighting design. And Steffy knows a great deal-he is an internationally recognized lighting designer.

Steffy's book can be recommended without reservation to those who are serious about learning the technology, craft, and process of lighting design-reading it is a close approximation to an extended conversation with a successful and seasoned expert who is willing and capable of sharing what he knows. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Technicaly Inacurate
This book contains many errors. In one chapter the book discusses PZM microphones. It refers to an image of an SM-57 microphone. This is incorrect.

Another section of the book discusses Phantom power and says that the power travels down both balanced audio lines and states that they are pins 1 and 2 of an XLR. Again this is incorrect. Phantom power travels down pins 2 and 3 which are the real balanced audio lines.

This book states to always allow for 4 amps per power amplifier. This is a wild statement when he does not know what power amplifier the reader is planning on using. Many amplifiers can use more then this amount and could be a disaster to anyone who only supplies 4 amps to each amplifier.

Author also states that the speed of sound increases with heat and humidity and then says that the actually speed depends on atmospheric pressure and air density. Humidity has little to nothing to do with the speed, but rather the absorption of acoustical energy.

I do not recommend this book for anyone! There is very little useful information and far too much inaccurate information. Many chapters consist of one to two pages which have only a couple of paragraphs on each. These are major topics and should have a lot more coverage in the book. Images are all in black and white and many are hard to make out what they are of. Author does not cover digital information as he should.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but dated.
Overall this book gives a good overview into the field of concert lighting and sound.Much of the equipment talked about in this book is no longer in use in the field. The book does not include any talk about fiber optic cables, which are becoming a standard.I would only suggest this book to a younger reader that just wants a feel for the field.

Product Description

In this groundbreaking study, Gail Cooper shows that, from the outset, air conditioning has been the focus of conflict and controversy--well predating today's concerns about fluorocarbons and global warming. While a technical elite of designers, inventors, and corporate pioneers made a comprehensive plans for the new technology, their ideas were challenged by workers, consumers, government regulators, business competitors, and rival professionals.

Americans now spend most of their summertime inair-conditioned buildings or cars. In Air-Conditioning America, historian Gail Cooper shows that this is not necessarily an inevitableconsequence of technological progress. Although we think of it as aform of cooling, its name shows that air-conditioning was first aimedat "it isn't the heat, it's the humidity" problems. From itsfirst use in cloth or gunpowder factories to the annual summerbrownouts, the progress of a.c. has been a struggle between socialgroups and what Edward Tenner calls "the revenge of unintendedconsequences" in Why Things BiteBack. Rational, technocratic engineers have sought perfectartificial weather; managers and builders have wanted low constructioncosts; electric companies need income during the summer months; andthe people who actually use the equipment have their own definitionsof comfort that might not be a uniform room temperature of 72 degreesFahrenheit. Cooper's style is medium-academic and may not be foreveryone, but her book is full of insight into the forces shaping theway Americans live and use their technology. --Mary EllenCurtin ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting look at a little known topic
Gail Coopers classical work on the history of air condition and why the United States choose to partake is a fascinating venture. The book looks at the not only the technology and companies involved in developing air condition but the battle between the pure air activists and man made climate control. The idea of the battle over humidity as opposed to air quality and the idea of air conditioning and heating as one and the same is an interesting historical perspective not seen today. The eventual victory of air conditioning in America came not through industry but through home builders making it a necessity rather than a luxury. The evolution of all these ideas is covered clearly and concisely for readers who are not well versed in technology. If want to read about a little know topic this is a great place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great writing and fresh view on the personal environment
Ms Cooper has a great writing style which lends itself perfectly to the understanding of the uninitiated and untechnical layman of this topic. The unexpectedly fresh view into how to see the spaces in which we live madethis book a special page-turner which can amuse and delight almost anybody.I highly recommend this book to those who onlt see the spaces we live andwork in as shells and the unseen workings of the air-conditioning systemsas only on or off. ...
