5-0 out of 5 stars Passed the CLEP!
I used the Barron's Business Law in order to study for the Introductory Business Law CLEP. I studied for weeks using this book. I focused on the sections specified by the college board as being covered on the test. I got a 74/80! I didn't even bother with the REA Business Law book and I tested my knowledge by using the College Board's practice test and that was it. This book is definitely worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Entrepreneurs
I have read numerous books on law while staring companies. This book is one I turn to on a regular basis when I run into legal questions. It is very diverse, offers excellent information in plain language and allows you to speak confidently and intelligently with your lawyers.I think it should be on every entrepreneurs book shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad deal
The book was in good shape when I got it (and I didn't have to wait long at all). I was a little D: that the practice tests had been written in because that wasn't stated in the product description, but since it was so amazingly cheap I really couldn't bring myself to care. I needed the book to read for a CLEP test and it did the job. I feel quite well prepared.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for every adult.
I purchased this book for CLEP test, and it is very comprehensive. Also, it explains so many legal terms I had heard bandied about as I waded through life that includes contracts and terminology, and the legal system in general.VERY informative, easy to understand, and provides review questions at the end of each chapter. I'm keeping it as a reference. Honestly, this is a subject that should be taught in High School in order to prepare one for life, and this book is a wealth of information.Including shipping, it cost me a little over $6. I anticipate doing well on the CLEP, which will save me a minimum of $1,800 in tuition in books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
I bought this particular book, not as a legal student, but a small business owner looking for some legal answers and advice. Unlike similar books I had purchased prior to this, this book is compact but detailed enough to answer all of the questions I had. I found the format useful and practical, as it was very easy to locate just about any topic off-hand. I was most surprised about how easy a read it is. It is not pretentious, like most legal books, but begins from the assumption that the reader is new to the subject. A great buy. I would highly recommend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for young professionals.
This is a great book filled with good advice for young engineers and other professionals entering the workplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Saver
I read this book in 1990 when I started my Engineering career.I purchased copies of it for the engineers in my department at the time and have always remembered it's advice.I have re-read it several times and and count this little book as one of my most valuable posessions.I still have my original, beaten and worn.

5-0 out of 5 stars A timeless gem
This 60 page pamphlet was originally written in 1944 and re-published in 2001 with minor edits.I am surprised this is the first review, so I will make it longer. It is a gem of practical advice on how to succeed in an engineering organization as an engineer and manager. It should be a must read for everyone in this field. It is amazing how relevant all the advice from 1944 is still today. People don't change! The book was probably written by a mechanical engineer, but was 100% relevant to me - a software engineer and will likely be equally relevant to other cubical dwellers with engineering degrees and their managers.

The language style of the book was preserved from 40s edition and makes the book even more entertaining to read, but I do take its advice seriously. The advice in the book is very simple and aimed at helping novices adapt to engineering environment faster. Good refresher for everyone though.

The advice is related to how to communicate with manager, co-workers and, in general, how to behave to succeed in an engineering organization without sacrificing your principals. It emphasizes that your communication skills are more important than any technical skills you have.Simple things like "strive to be concise" (I wish I was in this review), "be careful of accuracy of your statements", "don't invade domain of another department without consent or fire may erupt", "cultivate the habit of seeking people's opinions", "promises, schedules and estimates are necessary", "show interest in what your employees are doing", " do all you can to protect the personal interests of your subordinates and their families", and my favorite: "do all you can to see that your subordinates get all the salary to which they are entitled". :)There is actually more stuff for managers in this pamphlet, but, as it correctly notes, every aspiring engineer will, over time, have some managerial tasks. All in all, a great quick read to keep you on your game. ... Product Description
Monday morning's are hell. That's what Carolyn Sullivan is thinking as she arrives at her office at the Ventura County Probation Department. She's got a paper due for law school. Two high energy kids who need to be in different places at the same time. A mountain of debt. Her boss is on the warpath before she even has a chance to grab her first cup of coffee. But Carolyn's day is about to get a lot worse. One of her probationers has just been arrested for rape. It's a front-page headline story that leads squarely back to Carolyn's paper-strewn desk and overwhelming caseload. Could she have prevented the crime? She fears the top brass, pressured by the media, may destroy her career. Just when Carolyn should be lying low, instead she's assigned a sensitive case that's sure to have everyone breathing down her neck - supervising convicted killer and paranold schizophrenic Daneil Metroix. Carolyn dives into a case that everyone else seems to want to keep closed...one that leads behind the glossy exteriors of Ventura's most prominent sons into the darkest corners of the American dream. Someone doesn't want Carolyn to discover the truth.Someone who knows where she lives, where she goes, who she sees. Someone who will strike at the very heart of every mother's worst fear in order to silence her for good. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Service
I purchased this book just several weeks before it arrived. The condition of the book was as stated and I was very happy with the prompt shipment.

1-0 out of 5 stars lack of research
I listened to the whole unabrigdged book to try to understand why this book would get published.I belive it is the worst book of its genre that I have listened to on CD or read.

There are several femal author's to choose from.Don't choose Ms. Rosenberg.Sullivan's Law (Rosenberg, Nancy Taylor)

2-0 out of 5 stars Nope - just not up to par with the rest of the genre
I love all things Grisham, Greg Iles, Stephen King, Philip Margolin and (my new fave) Karin Slaughter. This was my first try at Rosenberg. The story line was interesting enough to keep me going, but halfway through the book I gave up, which I don't often do.There were many discrepancies that annoyed me. I'd have to turn back pages, thinking "Didn't she already say.... yes, so what is she talking about here?" The writing didn't grab me either - kinda flat. I hate to sound like a snot, but this seemed to me a "dumbed-down" version of a suspense novel. I finally decided, "Give it up!"There are too many books on my to-be-read list to continue with this.Sorry.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not good - just routine
In the world of mysteries and crime novels, the heroes tend to be somehow related to the law:cops, lawyers, crime reporters or private eyes.In Sullivan's Law, Nancy Taylor Rosenberg follows this trend but at the same time moves in a fresh direction:her main character, Carolyn Sullivan is a probation officer. In a world divided between the criminals (and their advocates) and the law enforcers, Sullivan is somewhere in the middle.

As the novel opens, one of Sullivan's old cases comes back to haunt her:a young man who she has more-or-less fallen off her supervision radar has just raped and almost killed a child. To some extent, this was not her fault, but she catches a bit of flak for it.Nonetheless, her boss (and former lover) assigns her to a new case:Daniel Metroix, who 23 years earlier, killed a cop's son.

When Carolyn starts reviewing his case, she comes to the realization that he may have been innocent of the crime and merely railroaded by the victim's father. This feeling is strengthened when people start trying to kill Daniel and in the process, endanger her. And, of course, since this is a mystery novel, the obvious killer (Daniel) is most likely not the real one.Somehow, with all her huge caseload, her attending night law school and raising two children (with a deadbeat dad of an ex-husband), Carolyn still find time to find the truth and have a little romance on the side.

Sullivan's Law is neither bad nor good; it is a straight three-star novel. While it is competently enough written to keep the reader turning the pages, it offers little that is out of the ordinary, beyond Carolyn's profession.Since I picked up three of Rosenberg's books cheaply, I will be reading her again, but there is nothing spectacular enough in her writing to (so far) make me go out of my way to buy anymore of her work. This is entertaining, but also strictly average.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rosenberg is a winner
Sullivan's Law was a can't put down novel.Rosenberg has to be one of the most thrilling and captivating author of our time. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Its okay.JUST okay
Its okay.I had to get this book for my Communications Law class. It reads easier than most law books

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book
I thought it would be a boring book. Surprise! It is very well written, and it brings tons of historical facts about freedom of speech and of the press in a context of story telling.

5-0 out of 5 stars An accessible, left-leaning overview of first-amendment law
A very familiar, weak joke among my friends is to preface even the most self-apparent advice with the phrase "I am not a lawyer."For example, "I'm not a lawyer, but I'd advise against punching your neighbor in the face.""I'm not a lawyer, but I'd recommend renting The Incredibles instead of Friday the 13th Part 27."

The amazing thing about Anthony Lewis's Make No Law is that it renders that cliched phrase unnecessary.I truly am not a lawyer, but it didn't seem to make a bit of difference while reading this book; I found it a very accessible and readable overview of the history of the first amendment.

Admittedly, that description may not make this sound like a page-turner, but it actually is.In the way that a good teacher can make any subject seem interesting, Anthony Lewis breathes life into even the dullest moments of constitutional history. And when the situations he's describing are truly dramatic (as with the courtroom showdown in the Sullivan case, around which most of this book is structured), Make No Law creates the suspense and intrigue of a great fictional thriller.

It's worth mentioning that Lewis doesn't seem to strive for strict objectivity. In his observations, he frequently advocates for a liberal interpretation of freedom of the press, praising the Supreme Court justices who advanced his views and criticizing as small-minded those who did not.I personally thought that these sections gave depth and context to the facts of the Sullivan case, but those looking for an unbiased journalistic text might look elsewhere.

That minor concern aside, Make No Law is almost perfect as a text for the layperson who wants to understand how one part of the American legal system ticks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another necessary free speech book
There is little to add to the other reviews.Lewis writes well, on a important enough subject. He idealizes the court's creation of, and support for, free speech doctrine. The importance of the Sullivan case is the crux of the book.Justic Goldberg summed up the result: "A public official from recovering damages for a defamatory falsehood relating to his official conduct unless he proves that the statement was made with 'actual malice'--that is, with knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not."It was, according to Lewis, a victory for free speech and important component in the development of free speech doctrine.
The book is a good read for those interested in free speech issues, the history of which are supremely important in understanding the nature and danger of threats to freedom.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why press freedom matters...
A readable account of the libel case that dramatically defined and expanded the scope of press freedom. It's difficult to remember that it was only in the 1960's that these ideas were settled by the Supreme Court.Lewis backgrounds the history of press freedom, or rather government attempts to bridle it by various sedition acts that seemed to appear each generation [Ashcroft's current attempts to inhibit 1st Amendment rights is only the latest in a long series] The last chapters of the book cover libel cases through 1991 when the book went to press. The short section on the Pentagon Papers case is particularly timely.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy for learning but too many examples
This book makes learning fairly easy with helpful cases to relate to the information. Each chapter has approximately 7 cases to make the content relatable. The cases also include titles that make it easy to know which term they relate to. One thing that makes it more difficult to get through the material is that they list far too many examples for the topics. For example, when they go through why a physician needs to be caring they list 12 to 15 examples instead of 1 or 2. It's almost like beating a dead horse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Law& Ethics for Medical Careers
My book was right on time for my class. It is a book I wll keep to reference back to.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book for class
It is the book that was required for class but if it's not required, it's not worth a read.I do like that it is short (only 12 chapters) and it has excerpts of actual cases which was cool. But it also has a lot of "fluff" so there is a lot of unnecessary reading. ... Read more

Product Description

Much has changed in the area of school law since the first edition of The Educator's Guide was published in 1986. In this new seventh edition, the authors have streamlined the discussion by pruning older material and weaving in new developments. The result is an authoritative source on all major dimensions of Texas school law that is both well integrated and easy to read.

Intended for Texas school personnel, school board members, interested attorneys, and taxpayers, the seventh edition explains what the law is and what the implications are for effective school operations. It is designed to help professional educators avoid expensive and time-consuming lawsuits by taking effective preventive action. It is an especially valuable resource for school law courses and staff development sessions.

The seventh edition begins with a review of the legal structure of the Texas school system. Successive chapters address attendance and the instructional program, the education of children with special needs, employment and personnel, expression and associational rights, the role of religion in public schools, student discipline, open meetings and records, privacy, search and seizure, and legal liability under both federal and Texas law. In addition to state law, the book addresses the growing role of the federal government in school operation through such major federal legislation as the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and the No Child Left Behind Act.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have the Dressler textbook, this is a must have.
I didn't have much time to prepare for my criminal law final but luckily I found this gem of an outline. My professor's exam required you to know both the common law and model penal code approaches to the crim law doctrines, and this book recited concisely that exact information. The book went into the perfect depth to study for exams -- you can learn the major doctrine and most (if not all) of the exceptions and caveats.

My outline looked superb after combing through this outline.

Note: It does not really cover cases in any detail, so if your prof. goes case heavy you will need to rely on the textbook or get another supplement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally worth it if you have the Dressler case book
GREAT book if a) you have the Dressler case book, or b) you have a professor that likes comparing and contrasting the common law with the MPC (Model Penal Code).

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to navigate, but clear.
This is very helpful for use with Dressler's casebook, but be forewarned, it is very hard to navigate because of the horrible index. You pretty much have to flip through the book to find a concept and hope that you come across it by chance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Civ Pro Review
I used this for an 8 hour final this past week and was SO glad I did! I bought the "Crunch Time" version for my 8 hour con law final 2 days later and was kicking myself the entire time. If you have the time to read through this book (or even just sections of it for a final as I did) it is definitely worth it. I don't know that I would recommend a book like this for a simpler subject like torts, but I felt much more confident being able to check my answers, knowing I wasn't forgetting to cross-reference another rule that I hadn't remembered, etc. With all the reading law school gives to begin with, I wouldn't use this during the semester, but I definitely plan on using the full emanual books in the future for all my 8+ hour exams! Highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give it More Stars

I read "High Court case summaries" and "The Glannon Guide" before the exam and how lucky& Wise I were to go further than above mentioned books! This is a "must read" before your exam, maybe the night before. I love the outline part and the first 70 pages which explain in quick numbers how you should start answering the exam, what to look for, what kind of twists to be aware of and etc.... BUT IT, YOU WILL APPRECIATE IT and you will thank me for recommending the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Way to Start Learning About Law
This is one of the "how-to" books that are fun to read even if you are not faced with a situation which requires it.This well-written book covers a wide range of legal topics that an American citizen may face one of these days.Much emphasis is placed on things like maritalproblems, parenting problems, employment issues, consumer and creditproblems, etc.Needless to say it does NOT replace a good lawyer when thecase is complex, but the author actually encourages you to "take thelaw into your own hand" and shows you how you can solve a number ofeveryday legal difficulties without hiring a lawyer.

This book cannotclaim to be a complete guide to being your own lawyer or recognizing yourlegal rights or duties, but I found it a terrific first-step book to readabout our great legal system. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful thus far
This book, like all Emanuel's outlines, has been instrumental in understanding the material. Clear and concise. Would definitely purchase again!

Got me my product in a timely manner, and the product was exactly what I wanted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful & Comprehensive
Crunchtime for Corporations was incredibly helpful in my studying.I don't think I would have done as well on my exam without it.The outline and the sections on Securities Fraud were probably the most helpful.I would definitely recommend it, especially for someone who feels like they need to cram a little before their final.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overall Reference
I like the Emmanuel Law Outlines for review of the black letter law, and particulatly like the CrunchTime series for pre-test review. The Corporations Crunch Time covers enough as a "last minute" cram reference for finals, multistate issues, or quick finishing touches.

4-0 out of 5 stars 2L
Good reference. This guide's usefulness will be dependent on how your professor approaches the class. My professor was not concerned with the rules and emphasized more the general concerns. This book references the Nutshell--The Law of Corporations (which is more general).I found the Emanuel and the Nutshell to be both useful in preparing for exams.Since my professor approached corporations in a more general format, the Emanuel's attempt to place the concepts in neat categories was a little too precise for me.Overall, worth the money.I do highly recommend the Nutshell also.It has a great definitions section and clearly presents the material in a general format. ...       This Leading Edge work by Esther and Jerry Hicks, who present The Teachings of Abraham, will help you understand every relationship you are currently involved in as well as every relationship you have ever experienced.

This book uncovers a myriad of false premises that are at the heart of every uncomfortable relationship issue, and guides you to a clear understanding of the powerful creative Vortex that has already assembled the relationships that you have desired.       Abraham says: “It is our desire to help you to solve the mystery of those seemingly impossible relationships; to sort out the details of joyously sharing your planet with billions of others; to rediscover the beauty of your differences; and, most of all, to reestablish the most important relationship of all: your relationship with the Eternal, Non-Physical Source that is really you.

“It is our desire that you experience an enhanced appreciation of your planet; your body; your family; your friends; your enemies; your government; your systems; your food; your finances; your animals; your work and your play; your purpose; your Source; your Soul; your past, your future, and your present. . . ."

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it
This book is full of love and peace. I enjoyed it so much that I'm buying another copy to give away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deeply aligning with Self.
I am now reading "The Vortex" and it's a delicious treat. Everything you wish to know about our relationships in life is explained with such amazing clarity and love that you just finally get it if you haven't before. As you go through the pages of this book you gain more and more insight on the subject of the various relationships even though you could just find the issue that is bothering you in the index and jump right to it (not recommended).

Feeling yourself into wellbeing, happiness and everything you desire is such a wonderful and effective practice and by the time you finish reading this book you will have all the guidance you need to do it.

I am writing this from a point of alignment with Myself :) and it feels so wonderful.

Bless you Abraham, Esther and Jerry.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
I really enjoyed this book a lot. It put a lot of things in perspective for me. I wont get into detail about what it is about becuase many other reviewers already have done that. I have also ordered there DVD on the Vortex I am excited to watch it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Abraham Hicks Vortex
I actually ordered the book after listening to the CD audio version. I prefer the CD but the book is also great. I use it for reference material for the online forum that discusses the teachings of Abraham Hicks along with other spiritual teachers.
That would be the OasisAspect Forum.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical motivator in shifting attention and attitude
I admit to holding a bit of a condescending attitude toward this couple and the supposed "Abraham' energy she works with, but a respected friend recommended it when I was handling a long standing life challenge in an obsessive and non productive manner.

I don't think it's necessary to believe or know what the source of the advice is, it is just good practical help for when you feel 'stuck' and negative, and unable to shift or change things, and maybe even feel hopelessly stuck.

The author explains in a matter of fact way what the effect of focused attention is, and gives helpful information on shifting one's attitude and attention.

Basically instead of wrestling demons, you focus on whatever is working, happy or positive, however small it may seem, that beginning step will amplify the 'good' feelings and begin to give momentum to more positive change.

You don't need to understand exactly how this works, just try it, because it does work. ... Read more

Rich with wisdom, this practical gem focuses on the building blocks of true leadership—self-confidence, effective communication, collaboration, and courage—while dealing specifically with stereotypes (avoid the Mammy Trap, and don’t become the Angry Black Woman) and the perils of self-victimization (don’t assume that every challenge occurs because you are black or female).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Quick-Reference!
This book is exactly what is says it is: "a little black book."Much like that little book of all your "go-to" numbers, reminders, and people to call for specific reasons, this book gives you the little pointers and common sense approaches for the various situations that come up in your job and career development. Keep it in your desk, be discreet, pick it up often when you need to remind yourself that a game is being played, and that there are rules, when it comes to succeeding in business. You may feel as though you already "know" the rules, but this book keeps them fresh in your mind, reminds you to be on your toes at all times, and to maintain your readiness for when the opportunities come your way.Take it from women who definitely know, and snag a copy of this gem!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Little Black Book of Success
I would have liked to have a section that focused on successful leaderships for black women in small town non-profit employment.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Little Black Book of Success: Written For Women But Perfect For Men, Too
When it comes to books that address the issue of success, I always try to look at the track record of those giving the address. With THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK OF SUCCESS, it is hard not to try and apply the counsel given because those giving it have practiced what they preach. The book outlines some fundamental principles that all of those in business---women or men---can look at and apply in their respective careers. I don't think that books such as this should be limited to one gender, but I can appreciate the authors wanting to give advice to those they see as being sometimes left out of the discussion.

This is one that I highly suggest for anyone looking to turn their business or brand into a force of nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Little Black Book of Success: Laws of Leadership for Black Women
Wonderful reading for women of all racial backgrounds.Found this book to be easy to read, understand, and apply to my daily life.Thank you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Little Black Book
This book has it flaws--I wish that the chapters were longer and a little more fleshed out; I think that the subdivision of each chapter into three parts was not always necessary; and, I wish that the authors had added more illustrative examples from their individual experiences since they each have such interesting, exciting, and successful careers. That being said, I would still recommend this book to anyone (not just African-American women) who wants to more ably manage his or her career. While I had heard some of the tips before, many of them were new and fresh, and they really helped me to reconsider ways that I could accelerate my professional progress.I also really appreciate that, rather than just spouting platitudes, the authors give specific, concrete action steps for their readers to follow in various situations--in my experince, this is rare, so the inclusion is a very notable and welcome change from what is contained in similar literature. Finally, I liked that the book was informative but still a quick and easy read--very useful when trying to balance future professional development with current professional responsiblities. All in all, a good "little black book". ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Law Degree Options
This is an all-encompassing exploration of jobs/careers for those who went to law school and were dissatisfied with the practice of law and want other career options to utilize their law degree.

4-0 out of 5 stars Got me thinking
No book can solve your problems or tell you what to do with your life. WCYDWALW did get me thinking about things from a different perspective, which is really the most you can expect from any self-help book. It is weighted slighty more towards lawyers looking to change carrers WITHIN the law rather than lawyers looking to LEAVE the law entirely but it should be helpful for someone in either catagory. Either way, the book is worth a look. (Get it used, however; I think I spent about $2.00 for mine).

Recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars check out at the library; not worth the purchase!!!
This book offered readers mundane, general, and minimal common-sense information. For example, the section on "how to self-assess", reviews simplistic and surface issues such as: do you want to work alone or as part of a team? Those type of questions were not helpful to me, nor were they very thought-provoking in helping steer me in the right direction.Unfortunately the book's "job search resources" consisted of suggesting you buy MORE books or searching the web with standard internet job search sources (e.g.,careerpath, Monster, jobtrack, etc.)... no real help.Although, if you really just need to get out of the house, it wouldn't hurt to take a trip to library to review this book; who knows you may actually find a book that helps you; probably not this one.I would not suggest wasting your money purchasing it.

1-0 out of 5 stars BE WARNED!A review of the reviewers: don't trust the 5 stars
BE WARNED!Of the 15 people who give the book 5 stars half are anonymous, and the other half have only written reviews of this book, they have never written a review for any other book. These reviewers have sought out every copy of this book to write 5 star reviews. Reviewer "Law Practice Management Magazine" wrote 5 glowing reviews of this book.

I would bet money that the author or someone close to the author wrote all of these glowing reviews, especially since there are so many reviews from legitimate people which state this book is pure trash. I have seen it before, and reported it to Amazon in the past.

I also contacted Law Practice Management Magazine letting them know that "Law Practice Management Magazine" is using their magazine's name.

5-0 out of 5 stars Books Don't Solve Problems
I saw Ms. Arron speak at workshop in 1996 when I was a law student at SMU.I figured that if I didn't want to end up burned out and dissatisfied practicing law maybe I should study how people come to find themselves in such situations.I bought the book two year before becoming a licensed attorney. For those wishing to take an unorthodox approach to the legal profession this is a great book to read prior to finishing law school.

I was saddened to learn that Ms. Arron died in 2002 from complications from bone marrow treatment. This work is groundbreaking and still a significant contribution to the body of literature realting to job dissatisfaction among attorneys.

I am also a little offended by the bitter tone of some of the "critics" of this book who posted their comments hear on Amazon. No, this book will not "solve your problems."However, it is a great resource to help people envision other pathways for their careers.I've never thought of any book as being the solution to a problem. Then again I also never thought that going to law school was going to gurantee me any degree of job satisfaction. ... Product Description
Bennett-Alexander and Hartman's Employment Law for Business, 6/e addresses law and employment decisions from a managerial perspective. It is intended to instruct students on how to manage effectively and efficiently with full comprehension of the legal ramifications of their decisions.

Students are shown how to analyze employment law facts using concrete examples of management-related legal dilemmas that do not present clear-cut solutions. The methods of arriving at resolutions are emphasized, so that when the facts of the workplace problem are not quite the same, the student can still reach a good decision based on the legal considerations required by law, which remain relevant. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Editorializing
From an instructor's perspective, this book has a number of problems.First, as some other reviewer correctly noted, it is full of opinionated statements that have questionable premises.Second, it is not very well organized. From the legalistic perspective, this book should have a short section that explains some of the basic principles of our law, such as what equity and common law are, the principles of agency law, and so, with an organized approach to the various legal theories that can justify an employment lawsuit. They might have devoted a chapter to laying out the Constitutional provisions, the federal statutes, contract law, the law of agency, and so on.Instead of giving an organized presentation of legal theories of liability, they raise such theories piecemeal, and incompletely. They might have focused their material a bit more instead of spending a lot of effort and devoting a lot of space to a 28-page chapter on race and color that adds nothing but heat and little or no light to the issues of Employment Law/Policy.Chapter Four is simply a waste of effort, except for the Reconstruction Acts, whose current value is worth examining, but remain mostly fringe theories despite recent use.Third, some statements are not supported by evidence. It may be true, for example, that whites think race discrimination is no longer a problem (though I don't believe that) while blacks consider it quite contemporary and real, but no polling data is offered in support of that argument; instead the authors rely on anecdotal evidence.Fourth, given that illegal immigration and employment of illegal aliens has been a hot-button issue for the last several years, one would have expected a better chapter than the one on ethnicity and employment law.Fifth, although labor law has receded as an important topic in employment law, it has certainly receded as a topic for instruction in this text.Considering the ongoing efforts of union officials and corporate leaders to loot employment funds, one would expect some lenthgy treatment of ERISA.Sixth, the writers are not very consistent in their analyses.Compare the arguments in favor of "reasonable accommodation" in disability antidiscrimination law with the argument against HIV testing of health care workers.Their argument is made of tissue paper and can easily be torn apart.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but with reservations
This book is pretty good, but the authors have really expressed their opinions and made it sounds like anything but their opinions is crazy. But if you can ignore that then its a pretty decent Employment law book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best

Editorial Review

Product Description
Professors Fischl and Paul explain law school exams in ways no one has before, all with an eye toward improving the reader's performance. The book begins by describing the difference between educational cultures that praise students for 'right answers,' and the law school culture that rewards nuanced analysis of ambiguous situations in which more than one approach may be correct. Enormous care is devoted to explaining precisely how and why legal analysis frequently produces such perplexing situations.

But the authors don't stop with mere description. Instead, Getting to Maybe teaches how to excel on law school exams by showing the reader how legal analysis can be brought to bear on examination problems. The book contains hints on studying and preparation that go well beyond conventional advice. The authors also illustrate how to argue both sides of a legal issue without appearing wishy-washy or indecisive. Above all, the book explains why exam questions may generate feelings of uncertainty or doubt about correct legal outcomes and how the student can turn these feelings to his or her advantage.

In sum, although the authors believe that no exam guide can substitute for a firm grasp of substantive material, readers who devote the necessary time to learning the law will find this book an invaluable guide to translating learning into better exam performance. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting to Maybe
The book was in the condition I expected it to be in, therefore I am satisfied with my purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars More harm than help
ULTIMATELY, this book clouds your mind at a time when you are already stressed.Even if the book's test taking tips are the best in the world, the LAST thing that you want to be worrying about walking into an exam is the proper test "methods" to apply legal reasoning. It is better to spend your time studying the material and not the book (even if you read it early in the semester).Additionally, the reviewers that say this book is the next best thing and made them get good grades are probably from the same people that would have done well anyway. So, don't necessarily put too much weigh on their opinions. (yes I didn't do well my first year but EXCELLED later)

Further, I don't think you can really get value from this book by reading it before you have ever taken a law school exam. It's like reading a book about the finesse aspects of flying and then jumping in an airplane and thinking you are Chuck Yeager. If anything, focus on studying the first year materials and then consider this book...maybe...

5-0 out of 5 stars everyone says buy this book - they are right!
Useful, easy to read and the advice will be valuable all three years of law school. An excellent resource.

Seller shipped to me quickly and in good condition as promised.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
Lots of information, including many detailed examples.I wish that this book had been available when I was a law student.I doubt that much of it will be news to anyone who has gone to law school and taken many law school exams, but if you've never had to answer hypothetical questions before or spot issues, this book is a great place to start.Obviously, it won't guarantee that you'll do well on your exams but it will give you a sense of how to write answers --particularly what not to do-- and what law professors are looking form when they grade them.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book - Should be outlined to realize full potential
This book is a very valuable resource in acquiring the skill necessary to write stellar law school exams. It nearly breaks down writing law school exams down to a science; something that is not at all easy to do.

To get the most out of this book, it should definitely by outlined. While it may seem to be a daunting task to outline a 320 page book, the material is not that dense and the font is quite large; a motivated individual could read this entire book in an afternoon.

I don't understand how this book received so many mediocre reviews; it fulfills the purpose it was written for to near perfection.

In short, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to organize their thoughts more effectively when attacking a law school exam. I would also highly recommend outlining this book like you would a physical science text. ... Read more

It uses a checklist format to lead students through questions they need to ask to fully evaluate the legal problem they are trying to solve. It also synthesizes the material in a way that most students are unable to do on their own, and assembles the different issues, presenting a clear guide to procedural analysis that students can draw upon when writing their exams.
