5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Sierra Nevada Field Guide
I have acquired a collection of "field guides" as an avid hiker and backpacker. The Laws Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada is the easiest to use, compact edition of all with superb illustrations of plants, trees, wildlife, paw prints, and pretty much everything but rocks that you'll see on a hike!It is exceptionally well organized, also contributing to ease in finding out what you are looking at or have photographed. The scorpion who charged at me in the dark cold night is listed and illustrated and no, I don't feel much better about that! There are far more spiders than I knew about and wonder how many have slept by me for warmth!EEK! A large bird that flew right by us and left a giant white SPLAT near us is there, easily found in the bird section, too. I just love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent General Field Guide for the Sierra Nevada
This is a great field guide for the Sierra Nevada.
It's quite comprehensive, including wildflowers, trees, mushrooms, insect, butterflies, birds, fish, amphibians, mammals, and even charts of the evening sky.As a general guide, it doesn't go in depth in some areas, but that's the price you pay for having everything in a single book. The wildflower section is particularly good (taking more than 1/3 of the book) and so it's the insect section (I never paid attention to bugs before buying this guide). The guide is based on gorgeous color drawings (rather than photographs), which allows the author to emphasize the characteristics of the subject.
The guide is nicely printed on water resistant paper, but as a result is quite heavy. If you are a minimalist backpacker or hiker, I don't think you want to bring it to the field.
All and all, this is the best general field guide I've found for the Sierra Nevada.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
This is the most amazing field guide I've ever come across! Beautifully illustrated, it covers everything from lichens to cloud formations bringing an authority to each subject at nearly a level that Sibley brings to birds. Usually when a field guide tries to cram together birds with fish with trees and more it fails miserably. Not here. Laws worked closely with dozens of scientists and naturalists to recognize the most important elements of the Sierra ecosystem and the diagnostic features essential to their identification. Many lifetimes of experience are felt throughout this book. Laws has set a new standard for comprehensive field guides across the planet. My backpack will forever be lighter! (Suggestion: purchase at your neighborhood independent book seller) PS - Heyday Books rocks!

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic
I don't give a lot of 5-star reviews, but this book is fantastic. Laws' line art is much clearer than the color photos you'll see in more cheaply produced books. This book is clearly a labor of love by someone who has spent a lifetime in the Sierra; who else will tell you that the leaves of western Labrador tea "smell like toilet bowl cleaner?" I particularly like the way Laws has organized the key to the flowering plants; it's much more usable than keys written for professional botanists, but doesn't dumb things down so much as to be useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and user friendly field guide
At first I thought I didn't need this field guide, but quickly realized it's worth. My husband and I were cutting wood and stacking it behind the barn when we lifted a tarp and saw a large brown and light yellow snake. We didn't know what kind it was so I got the Sierra Nevada field quide and was able to quickly find a picture of the non-threatening California Kingsnake.Since we have rattle snakes in our area, we were happy to see the Kingsnake in our yard. The book is very user friendly, it uses color codes and pictures to help you go to the right page and find your information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great supplemental study aid
I'm a big fan of the Law in a Flash series. These cards make for a great supplemental study aid. The best feature, in my opinion, is the "scenario" questions. These are like mini-fact patterns designed to get you thinking about one particular issue. I've found these to help get my mind around particular topics in a format conducive to an essay style exam (which all of my instructors use). I do wish that the cards had some more "concept w/definition" cards (where one side gives a word, concept, or issue, and the answer side has a rote definition), but it's not a major issue. I also do think that there was a bit too much repetition at times, and the product could have been pared down a bit.But maybe that repetition helps some people, despite annoying people like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars contracts-review
Extremely pleased with product. It was in exactly the condition described and sent very quickly, much appreciated.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money or time!
First - the flash cards were often too simplistic or just wrong.
Second - while many people may have done well with them they aren't an efficient study method (at least they weren't for me). The cards often have too much info on them or they are asking too obscure of a question to be useful when compared to an E+E or the Siegel's series.

I suggest that you save your money, these weren't cheap, and use an E+E and Siegels to learn how to answer questions and review. Law school exams are more about depth of analysis than simple memorization anyway.

1-0 out of 5 stars These cards SUCK
Mostly a waste of money. The cards overemphasize minor technical points (tons of cards on the rules about minors contracting, e.g.), fail to give anything more than basic hypos on major concepts (promissory estoppel, consideration, etc.), and are chock full of ridiculous, useless and cumbersome mnemonic devices.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for any contracts student
Love these cards! I use them to supplement my readings while on the bus or long commutes. Easy to carry, they include hypos and rules. A must! ... Read more

Product Description
An engaging, accessible guide to personal empowerment.

The phenomenal success of The Secret points to the great hunger for answers, hope, and change. But what if books like that seem a little too “out there” for you? Enter Deanna Davis, whose down-to-earth approach stems from her own change of heart (it happened at the Olive Garden). In this fun, quirky, and decidedly straightforward guide, Deanna shares the science, strategy, and stories of how to create your ideal life using a universal key to success called the Law of Attraction, whether you seek health, wealth, happiness, success, or anything else, large or small.

The book blends cutting-edge research, practical techniques, and a conversational, light, funny tone to make the information both meaningful and memorable. Like a talk by your favorite college professor, it provides brilliant concepts in a downto- earth manner—an uncommon blend of wisdom, creativity, inspiration, and practical strategies that work. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you can ignore the Waffle this book is brilliant
I have read 100's of very poor books on the Laws of Attraction in the last few years. I started reading books about goal setting, mind control and success principles in 1985. I have used what I learnt from my extensive reading, coupled with academic qualifications, business and psychology experience, to create a consulting company, teaching seminars to corporations in strategic thinking, marketing, goal setting and business development. I also use the principles to help individuals, by guiding them as a Life Coach, teaching people cognitive methods to help goal set and enhance their lives beyond what they could do on their own. As such, I read as many books as I can on a variety of subjects to enhance my knowledge. I can honestly say, that with all that experience, this book will help everyone who reads it to set better goals and achieve more in their lives, than they would think possible. It is a GREAT BOOK.

As the Laws of Attraction have come into vogue, through films like The Secret, a large number of books have been published with LOA in their title. I have read virtually every one of them and have found many get lost in the voodoo principles that think you can sit, think happy positive thoughts, visualise wealth and as if by magic and serendipity, vast fortunes will miraculously come your way. A whole generation of people have gotten frustrated, when this does not happen for them and they do not understand why the LOA seems not to work for them.

This book answers so many questions, regarding the LOA and why it can fail in so many ways, with so many people. It addresses many issues in its 212 pages. It looks at State, Intention and Action steps. It addresses old negative mental programming and if you download the workbook, will guide you through all the work you will need to do to get into the right state to allow the LOA to work.

Unlike so many other LOA books, this one puts so much emphasis on your own role in your own success. It uses every strategy you could want, from Kaizen to the Sedona Method (A Brilliant Method to get rid of Emotional Negativity) to EFT to get the Laws working for you by releasing past negativity. The workbook helps set new goals and new empowering beliefs that will propel you forward for greater success.

This really is a GREAT BOOK........BUT 212 pages could have been cut down. The first half of the book looks at State, Intention and Inspired Action. It is tedious and so full of utter waffle and waffle and waffle. I speed read and so ignored so much of the self absorbed waffle. The second half is better and it is obvious someone got a grip on the writing style.

If you can ignore the waffle in the first half, this is a great book for anyone who wishes to succeed in life and business with strategies that will help everyone achieve so much more from their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Working Already!
Wow. This book works. In the beginning of the book, the author shares her experience in the introduction, titled "Manifesting Meals, Mortgages, and Maui Manuscripts: My Story of the Law of Attraction in Action." After reading her 'Olive Garden' story I thought I'd put LOA to the test.

I went to the libary in Santa Monica, which is always packed. I put my attention on attracting a private seat at a table where I can plug in my laptop and charge my phone. What do you know? Within 60 seconds of thinking that intention-- I'm sitting here in my comfortable private seat (in a quiet area) typing this review!

Thank you Deanna, for taking the 'woo-woo' out of the law of attraction and making it practical and accessible to everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars OK I bought it
I don't have this book yet, but might get it if I could know more about it. I've read thru all 15 reviews and would love to see one that tells me about the book. Ok, so it's a great book. Would any of you care to elaborate?

Need to update this review. I bought the book and read it. Can't recommend it though. More like a supposed-to-be-funny travel log or something than a self help book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is excellent for deeper info and understanding.Never hurts to have the same data expressed in different words and experiences.Somehow that always seems to flesh out the ideas a little more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, funny, almost perfect
The Law of Attraction offers a lite and reasonably practical roadmap to being able to create or at least influence the future. It is very readable and even funny in parts, and it held my attention. The problem is, some physicist friends (I know a few) scoffed at the notion of some of its parts about the connection between thoughts and action.I will give it kudos for going beyond The Secret, but I think it falls short of a book called Ordaining Reality. That one goes into some serious physics to explain the connection between thought and future action. It's complex, but it's not lacking facts and science in that regard.I read the Law of Attraction in a weekend. It's taken me six weeks to get through the first eleven chapters of Ordaining Reality.I heard there is a new simpler version of that coming out soon and that may be well worth getting. In short, LoA is good and easy, but maybe not entirely accurate; whereas O.R. is tough and long, but seemingly quite accurate.Take your pick. ... Product Description
Cruel and Usual Punishment is a wake up call to the Western world.

Nonie Darwish presents an insider's look at Sharia and examines how radical Muslim laws are destroying the Western world from within. Living under Sharia law for the first thirty years of her life,a virtual slave to Islamic law, Darwish never questioned or challenged her rights--or dared to even think about the validity of Sharia laws. She didn't try to examine what Sharia was, how it came about or why she followed it. "This is Allah's law," she was told, and she knew what awaited those who questioned Allah's law.

But she doesn't believe the lies anymore, and now she wants to share her experiences with the Western world. Cruel and Usual Punishment is an insider's look at how Muslims sacrifice their basic human rights to obey the archaic and brutal laws handed down to their prophet centuries ago.

Heed this warning: Sharia Law is attempting to infiltrate Western culture and destroy democracy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Info-Bad Read
This book is full of great information. However, by page 100 I felt like the author started to repeat herself. I normally make myself finish a book, although in this case I just couldn't do it. I thought a couple more pages and it will get better, and it never did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cruel and Usual Punishment
This is a book every American needs to read to learn what Sharia is in Islam.Another book of this type is "A God Who Hates".These books were written by Muslim women and they explain the mindset of some muslims who cause great harm.I would recommend them highly. They explain a lot about certain muslims.Cruel and Unual Punishment also gives solutions to the influx of bad muslims into The United States and how to stop them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disquieting to say too little.
After reading this book I can only say I hope it's exagerated or things aren't as bad as they sound. If you want an argument for why separation of church and state is necessary this book provides it. Where church and state combine the result is awful. In the case of Islam it seems worse in fostering closed, repressive, and regressive societies. I'd quote Winston Churchill on "Muhamedenism," but you can look that one up for yourself. Looks like what appeared to be true to Chruchill is still on target today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tragic Light on the Darkness
My father was career military. 1962 a Cuban/Soviet missile was pointed at us (Carswell AFB, & General Dynamics) I started studying war. In 1967 `world religion' was the curriculum in a Catholic high school. Mohammed impressed me as a military conqueror inventing a religion as a weapon. Nonie's book gave clarity on details of that weapon and has piqued my interest learning more about Islam. During the Shah of Iran my father trained Iranian officers, who also were guests in our home. My heart ached when crazed Khomeini took power.

In this book I learned Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in an `official statement': "A man can quench his sexual lusts with a child as young as a baby." Khomeini as a pedophile is a newly learned facet of Islam darkness. His statement goes on detailing allowed child sexual abuse (abuse by Western standards). Could this `theology' be part of today's slavery primarily of children sex slaves and the largest slavery in the history of mankind?

Nonie wrote about clergy and rulers are above the law, don't have to follow their Sharia laws. This gave understanding to Saddam Hussein and his sons' behavior. Brutal subjugation of women, living near the largest Islamic community in America (Dearborn MI) gives a new view of Muslims in America. Thank God we do not allow polygamy and other sins against children and women. At least in America we have laws. How well enforced is another topic.

Nonie stating the word `love' is absent from the Koran was another `aha' for me. There is no forgiveness, and repetitive amount of terror to infidels/Jews/Christians, I was sadly `enlightened' to the darkness. The nine year old `wife' of Mohammed - Aisha - his last wife (of several) there is much controversy, but the reality is females were bought and sold with no rights, and that is still part of today's hard core Muslim countries. I am so glad to be living in Judao/Christian America. This book made amazing contrast that I take for granted.

Then the chapter on `Egypt: A Case Study" the bizarre way a woman can end up in jail related to conversions that are not even conversions- the Coptic Christians in America and Canada shaming Egypt into releasing an imprisoned Christian woman . . .I was stunned in Egypt to convert from Muslim to Christianity is criminal - so I Googled that detail - was totally taken aback, had no idea how unjust Egypt is even today [...]

The massive amount of resources in Nonie's bibliography - I am impressed with the amount of data backing what she thoroughly researched.

Nonie- thanks for your guts to write this book . . . my heart aches more for those born into Islam.

5-0 out of 5 stars A catalyst for further reading
A catalyst for further reading

I see that some reviews are quite passionate, either at the "pro-Nonie" or "anti-Nonie" end of the spectrum. I write this review for the reader who is newer to this topic. When I picked up this book, I had little to no knowledge on the subject of Sharia law. I by no means think I am now an expert, but I am definitely eager to research, read and learn more. I thought the book was well written, well researched and from a reliable source. I have definitely not reached any one conclusion regarding the issue, but this book gave me a place to start. I think it is a worthwhile read and eye opening. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork by John C Maxwell
It is very easy to read and comprehend. Has a lot of valuable information that is easy to put into practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific in Some Ways
This book goes right onto my Team Lit Top 10 list, because it's a breeze to read, with colorful vignettes and buckets of common sense wisdom. Best of all is its simple organization into 17 "laws" that make the broad ideas easy to grasp, while allowing the reader the option of digging deeper into each law as necessary. Granted (as other reviewers have observed): this isn't a ground-breaking book, but it serves as a very practical summary of what works with teams. My favorite law is The Law of the Scoreboard: The Team Can Make Adjustments When It Knows Where It Stands. In my corporate experience, too many team members aren't told the "score" or how far they've progressed against the final goal. My favorite line in the book is from Law #1--The Law of Significance: One is Too Small a Number to Achieve Greatness. "Nothing of significance as ever achieved by an individual acting alone"--which is a nice simplification of the famous FDR line. In one organization that I consulted to, Anthem Blue Cross, this book was widely read and applied, and the project teams benefited enormously from it.

But...there are also some difficulties I have with the book. There's a subtle bias towards management as if the anointed organizational leaders know more than the troops. I call this the "Father Knows Best" fallacy, a subtle form of patriarchy which frequently underlies conservative Christian perspectives on leadership. In my experience neither Father nor Mother knows better than front line team members--whether in large corporations or small organizations.

Perhaps because of that bias I don't hear any support for the rebel spirit that characterizes so many great teams--especially in the tech world, where freaks and geeks, dissidents and iconoclasts rule! (It's not unusual in many successful technology firms for small teams--or a few individuals on those teams--to thumb their noses at management and continue to work innovative projects that they're passionate about, until they eventually prove their worth and get major funding.)

Also, I don't hear any support for team diversity that capitalizes on differences in age, gender, cultural background, sexual preference, etc. to generate divergent views and creative conflict.(In "The Creative Priority" Jerry Hirshberg discusses the importance of selecting team members to deliberately produce "creative abrasion.")

And, finally, I don't hear any support for making teamwork FUN--including crazy-making activities and celebrations that often boost creativity and productivity (as exemplified by the teams of Southwest Airlines).

Yet despite these misgivings, this book is SO well organized, SO easy to digest, SO easy to apply, I can actually overlook what's missing and appreciate what's there. For a traditional slant on teamwork, this is actually the best book I've come across. It goes right up on my bookshelf next to "Organizing Genius: The Secrets of Creative Collaboration" by Bennis and Biederman (a non-traditional slant on teamwork)--along with a half dozen other high-profile team books I haven't opened yet!

Product Description

Are your in-laws poisoning your marriage?
Bestselling author Susan Forward shows you how to manage their behavior without jeopardizing your relationship with your spouse.

Toxic in-laws come in a variety of guises. There's the Critic, who can't wait to tell you what you're doing wrong: the Controller, who tries to run your life; the Engulfer, who makes constant demands on your time; and the Master of Chaos, whose numerous problems inevitably end up in your lap. If you're suffering from these or from any other type of infuriating in-laws, your frustration is likely affecting your relationship with your spouse. This remarkable book will help.

With equal doses of understanding and advice, Susan Forward helps you navigate the treacherous waters of toxic in-laws. She explains the unique complexities of the in-law problem, a triangle that forces you and your spouse into a tug-of-war of loyalty and support. She shows how in-laws often manipulate their children to get what they want, and helps you understand the difficulties this poses for your partner.

Drawing from real-life stories of men and women struggling to free themselves from their in-laws' destructive behavior, Forward offers highly effective strategies for getting your partner to stand up for you, for setting reasonable limits, and, most importantly, for protecting your marriage. Her techniques and strategies may not transform your toxic in-laws into the in-laws of your dreams, but they will help you maintain your sanity, self-respect, and, best of all, your relationship with the person with whom you've chosen to share your life.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why is this book so highly praised?
After endless recommendations from countless websites, I finally had to order it, hoping to shed some perspective on my general, very common problems dealing with my ILs. It was absolutely no help. I normally donate my books to Goodwill, but this one I threw in the trash.

5-0 out of 5 stars so identified...
i appreciate the reviews i have read in regards to this book.I am definitely very curious to read it.i felt so identified with some of the things expressed.I had a relationship with a man, who has a mother so controlling, that it stifles his relationships with women and professional career.I too fell in the trap of thinking "once she gets to know me, she'll like me"... but with time realized that it was just getting worst. she became more critical and competitive.at the end i felt betrayed by his mother.when he use to have outburst about his frustrations with her, i would tell him that he needed to be there for her and understand her, when on the other end she was criticizing me constantly... at the end, and after reading a few books on the subject, I realized that the notion of being patient and unconditionally supportive to her was a big mistake.that no matter what we do, the controlling parent, in this case mother, nothing will ever be enough because it's a fear and void that comes from within them and no one can help them fill it.I think its important to understand the root of the problem, to know how to deal with them and not take it personally and become so frustrated, and on that note, i think its important to treat them with respect and compassion. After all they have a great fear of being left alone. But at the same time, it's crucial to set boundaries and be firm.Because we will end up sacrifying ourselves, for nothing, because they most likely won't change. We must learn the art and balance of dealing with them.Being there for them, but setting loving boundaries for our own sanity and progress.

I also read: "Cutting Loose" by Howard Halpern, "Silently Seduced" by Kenneth M. Adams, "When He's Married to Mom" by Kenneth Adams, Alexander P. Morgan,
"The Emotional Incest Syndrome: What to do when a parent's love rules your life" by Dr. Patricia Love, Jo Robinson.

These books helped me understand some of his symptoms, which were many: they tend to be excessive in food, internet, workaholics, etc., lack of decision making, lack of sense of self, low self esteem, they have no sense of instincts, misplaced loyalty: disloyal to those who are loyal and loyal to those who are disloyal, lack of strength to set boundaries to those who disrespect them, depression, abandonment of self, help everyone else too much to the point of sacrifying themselves, and many other issues.

But by understanding his symptoms/issues, it helped me forgive him, heal and move on.I decided to end that relationship, and i know that it was 1. greatly due to his mother's pressures. 2. his many symptoms and issues because of his mother.. and 3rdly my lack of patience and tolerance to deal with the consequences, since man with these kind of issues tend to project their frustrations and unhealthy relationship with their mothers on to their intimate partners. The only way to have a healthy relationship with these man is 1. if they acknowledge they need help and 2ndly if they seek therapy.

What are some of the consequences? they could be somewhat controlling, they have a very difficult time showing their emotions, unable to be emotionally intimate, he never showed jealousy or anger, rarely disagreed, had a difficult time expressing how he really felt, which its a huge problem, if you can't communicate honestly with your partner then there's no real relationship, i felt alienated or emotionally isolated from him, i felt i always had to be strong and hide being emotional because any little sign of it would overwhelm him, everything was always about him, his life, his mother, afraid of living life to the fullest, i felt unprotected, if he didn't set boundaries for people (which includes his mother and ex-girlfriends) who disrespected and criticized him and all of his own decisions, how could i expect him to defend me from these kind of people.

I love him and i think i will love him for ever.since i also acknowledge that, besides his issues, at heart he is a great person.he is very talented and has some great qualities as well. but i couldn't sacrifice my life in this kind of distorted and unhealthy relationship.i wish him the very best from the bottom of my heart and hope that one day he'll confront his demons, becomes curious on how to help himself, seeks the knowledge/therapy that he so much needs and finally becomes free, free from all the emotional baggage in order to have a fulfilling, honest, intimate relationship someday with a woman and in order for him to reach the success he wants in his career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for anyone suffering from in-law relationship intrusion
Very insightful and helpful book as a result of Dr. Forward's 30+ years of research. I wish I would have found this book way before my marriage took a turn for the worst due to my spouse allowing her mother to step into our relationship. The books lays down the various personalities and flags situations that can quickly deteriorate your spousal relationship. Furthermore, it provides very helpful advice on how you can manage things to protect your relationship. Finally, decided to call Dr. Forward for a one hour phone counseling sessions. Very, very good feedback and analysis on my situation. God bless Dr. Forward for allowing me to understand what happened in my marriage and realize many things were out of my control.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book but still it is not for all conditions
I wish that I had read this book much earlier. But still it gave me so much confidence to myself in dealing with situations and improve my communication skills. It helped me most on getting myself ready for various situations and stay calm instead of losing control and still being able to respond back, instead of like before that my tongue was tight up and I was just letting myself being attacked and didn't know what to say or to do.

But still this book doesn't really help to solve the in-law problems I have.Even before reading this book, I had attempts to talk with my MIL about things that bothers me, and the answers I got were:1."Everything I did is out of love."2."I was just trying to help."Which are the top 2 excuses used by MILs as listed in this book.So recently, I tried to talk with her again using about the same words as in the book about her keep on calling my husband or me to give unsolicited advice about how we should raise our kids.I was saying something like, "I do appreciate your willingness to help, but sometimes all these advice may sound like criticism to me."Her answer was, "You know you are having problems?Your problem is that you always overthink too much."Being prepared by this book, I wasn't hurt and didn't try to immediately defend myself.

The good thing about this book is that it lists the rights we have as a wife and as a mom.So at least I know that I am not doing something terribly wrong, as not to accept help that I don't want. However, I don't think my MIL read a book about her rights, but when I talk with her about things related to kids, instead of calling my husband, maybe she should talk with me instead since I am the one that take care the kids most of the time, she likes to say that she has the rights to talk with her own son anything she wants. Also as a grandma, she has the rights to giving advice to the daddy of her grand children.(Especially when I declined her advice or say like let me think about it or I will discuss with my husband, she will call my husband and tries to push the idea to him. This created a lot of tensions between my husband and I.)

My marriage is in serious danger and in-law problems only account for half or 60% of the problems.Still I was naive before to believe that if only once every 9 months or a year that I have conflicts with my in-laws, it will be okay.Actually all those small little things erode my marriage from inside.

I am definitely the first one to be responsible for my marriage condition because I made my mistakes and didn't do my part well. But the other part is from my husband, who has a lot of anger inside toward his own parents. On the other hand, any complaints from his parents about me are taken very seriously or he over blames himself for marrying the wrong woman.

Actually I want to recommend another book from the same author, "Toxic Parents".This book lets me understand my husband so much better. He was physically abused by his alcoholic dad when he was very little, (4 or 5 I think), and abandoned by his mom twice, once as a 6 year old boy, once as a 18 years old.His dad left him and his siblings to some relatives and joined his mom later. So he lived from 6 to 14 years old without parents. He has the forever crave for his parents' love and at the same time hate to them for abusing him and abandoning him when he was a little.

Right after reading the book "Toxic in-laws", I was so confident, feeling that I can deal with in-law problems better and save my marriage. But after reading "Toxic parents", I understood the problems I am facing are more complicated.I hope that he can read the book "Toxic parents" or get some help from professionals. Now he is already so against me and I don't even have the power to help him.All I can do right now is to be strong and keep my kids safe.

This is very sad family history. My MIL is not a bad person.I fully understand the reasons why she behave that way unconciously. It is hard for her to accept the fact that her son has already grown up and has his own family. She missed 8-10 years living with him.In her mind, her kids are still kids.(I actually was very impressed by the efforts she and her husbands put to prepare food for family activities during the years.Later I understood the reasons.)Also she gets confused by her role as a grandma and as a mom.Sometimes she feels that my kids are actually her kids.

Shortly before my husband gave up our marriage and relationship with me, I talked with him one time that I figured out the reasons why her mom behaves that way, "She felt that she got another chance with her grand kids to make up for all those years she missed with her own kids."My husband said sadly, "Now you know."I was actually trying to say that this is a problem because my rights as a mom have been violated all these years. But in my husband's heart, he could be willing giving his mom another chance to watch her taking care of his own kids.

There is no hate or anger, but only sadness in my heart. And I need to be strong for my kids to keep them happy and safe, and out of dangers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Empowering
I had reached a point were I thought my in-laws really were going to wreck my marriage, after almost 6 years of trying many different ways to deal with them. I was angry and resentful towards them and my husband and felt completely hopeless. Reading this book has helped me see things clearly, as an observer, and snap out of the victim mentality. The cases narrated in the book made me feel I'm not alone.

Although I'm just finishing it, I already feel a great change in my attitude and I have started to develop a clear strategy. The part about dealing with your anger and adjusting your expectations was an eye-opener.

Most importantly it shifted my view of my husband's role and helped me see through his eyes. I was so angry at him for not standing up for me and letting his parents run his life (and by extension mine). Now I understand why he cannot do this automatically and what needs to be worked on to get him on my side.

I also liked the part on non-defensive communication since my IL's comments tend to catch me off guard and I get completely tongue-tied, and the reproach myself for not responding as I should have. The list of responses is great.

I highlighted half the book, and have gone back to re-read passages several times. I do think the title is a little strong, but I completely understand the concept. And despite the title, the book focuses on analyzing the problem as a three part system and accepting responsibility for your part of it.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The best-selling first edition of Law 101 provided readers with a vividly written and indispensable portrait of our nation's legal system. Now, in this revised edition, Jay M. Feinman offers an updated survey of American law, spiced with new anecdotes and cases, and incorporating fresh material on topics ranging from the President's war powers, to intellectual property, standard form contracts, and eminent domain.
Here is an exceptionally clear introduction to law, covering the main subjects found in the first year of law school, giving us a basic understanding of how it all works. Readers are introduced to every aspect of the legal system, from constitutional law and the litigation process to tort law, contract law, property law, and criminal law. Feinman illuminates each discussion with many intriguing, outrageous, and infamous cases, from the scalding coffee case that cost McDonald's half a million dollars, to the sensational murder trial in Victorian London that led to the legal definition of insanity, to the epochal decision in Marbury v. Madison that gave the Supreme Court the power to declare state and federal laws unconstitutional. He broadens the reader's legal vocabulary, clarifying the meaning of everything from "due process" and "equal protection" in constitutional law, to the distinction between "murder" and "manslaughter" in criminal law. Perhaps most important, we learn that though the law is voluminous and complex, it is accessible to all.
Everyone who wants a better grasp of current legal issues--from students contemplating law school, to journalists covering the legislature or the courts, to fans of Court TV--will find here a wonderful source of information: a complete, clear, and colorful map of the American legal system.

"An entertaining and informative introduction to the law.... For journalists, those interested in the law, and fans of television law dramas, this book should be required reading."--Library JournalAmazon.com Review
Thanks to TV cop shows, most Americans can probably recite the Miranda warnings, but do they know when the warnings do--and do not--apply? Tort reformers cite the $2.7 million in punitive damages a jury awarded a little old lady in Albuquerque when the cup of coffee she had set between her legs spilled and scalded her. These crusaders against "excessive" damage awards do not usually note that the trial judge reduced the award to $480,000, or that the coffee was 20 degrees hotter than competitors' coffee.

The law is all around. People continually invoke their rights, and every year millions of Americans are involved in formal legal proceedings. Yet most people are ignorant of even the basic concepts and organizing principles of U.S. law. Into the breach comes Jay Feinman's engrossing book Law 101: Everything You Need to Know About the American Legal System. Akin to a crash course in the first year of law school, Law 101 is a clearly written, eminently readable guide to the tenets of our legal system. It is structured around basic questions such as "If a contract is unfair, can a court refuse to enforce it?" and replete with clarifying examples--real and hypothetical. In explaining battery, Feinman writes: "If someone consents to a certain bodily invasion, he does not necessarily consent to any bodily invasion, however. When Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield are in a boxing match, Holyfield has consented to Tyson punching him in the nose ... but he has not consented to Tyson biting off a piece of his ear." Much clearer.

Law 101 won't instruct you on how to write your will or get divorced, but it will educate you at a more systematic level. It is also a great read. --J.R. ... Read more

I ordered 36 copies of Fineberg's book from Amazon only to learn, midway through the process, that Amazon could not deliver. Fortunately, I was able to fill the balance of the order in time for the Teachers' Law School, a once-a-year event involving 35 Texas social studies and government teachers, all of whom travel to Austin from all across the state. Despite Amazon's inability to serve, I want to thank one of your customer service agents who made an attempt to track and complete the order to which Amazon had committed.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Law is not for All!
Once again we see the mistake made by so many fanatical preachers and spiritual despots: they take a personal revelation and try to tell us that it applies to us as well.Sure, I think that "Do What Thou Wilt" should be the preponderance of the law.True, that this was an important event in Crowley's life and is integral to understanding where he was coming from.Yes, I agree that it is an interesting, nay beautiful, piece of prose and contains a great deal of philosophy that bears contemplation.I just don't believe a word of it. I don't believe in Awiass, I don't believe in the secret chiefs, and I don't believe that there is any meaning whatsoever in 4 6 3 8 A B K 2 4 A L G M O R 3 Y X 24 89 R P S T O V A L.Let's just say that I am skeptical about trusting prophecies of perfect leaders who channel strange beings and deliver proclamations of universal laws from on high. This is a prime example of why Crowley, despite his importance to the development of ritual magic and the insightful nature of most of his work, is ultimately not somebody I can get behind.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the binding/book itself
I cant comment on the contents.I haven't read it all yet, and from what I have read by others (other books about Crowely that I read to better understand the Thoth Tarot deck, I am not a student of Crowely in any way) they seem to say that this sort of book is the sort that one can only read and interperate for themselves... in other words, it would be useless for me to reflect upon it to you, even if I had read it.

Instead I chose to comment on the beauty of the book. Some people have said that the binding is ugly and I think this refers to an older version of the book. The book that I received is beautiful, bound well, and the print is clear.I think that the formating and the colors are quite stunning.I'm impressed with the look of the book.I think whatever version they bought, perhaps it is an older version, the book I got was quite lovely.

As to whether to buy the book or not... I think its up to you.If you are looking at this, you obviously are curious about it.I think, based on what I have read of other's reflections, that its the sort of book you read and take it with a grain of salt.I think that it is not intended to be a religion, as he says that quite vehemently through out a few things I have read he seems to be rather anti-religion, and it seems to be more of a personal philosophy.I haven't read it, like I said, I cant say much about it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Simply believe the prophet...
As the old saying goes, "If you can't dazzle with brilliance, baffle with BS." Aleister Crowley had the concept of baffling with BS down pat. The closer one looks at Crowley the more clear it becomes that he was little more than a garden-variety con man. Of those who actually knew him, very few found anything in him worth emulating. Like most good con artists he was adept at hiding his tracks, but there is plenty of evidence of his chicanery for those who are diligent enough to seek it out.

The Book of the Law is, so it is said, a message to Crowley from the Graeco-Egyptian god of silence Harpokrates. Since a god of silence doesn't speak, it needs a mouthpiece; this is where Aiwass comes in. Aiwass was supposedly a superhuman go-between who actually delivered the message to Crowley. The one and only person who can verify all of this of course is Crowley himself and the reader is expected to simply take his word for it.

The basic outline of the Book loosely follows the design of a funerary stelethat Crowley's wife (at the time) had brought to his attention at the Boulak Museum which was exhibit #666- Crowley's own number as self-proclaimed Beast 666. This was all he needed; he saw 666 and immediately viewed it as a sign that the stele was of immense importance and intended for him personally. He believed the figures on the stele held the keys to the past, present and future. But Crowley was unaware that funerary stelae of this nature with similar design and text were common in ancient Egypt, a "stock" item if you will; there really wasn't anything that special about this one. These stelae were modified according to theneeds of the deceased, but the basic elements- those which Crowley believed were of unique importance to him and his message- remained the same on all of them.

What is of particular interest to me is Crowley's gradual evolution away from his original source of inspiration- the ancient Egyptian deities on stele 666- to the tale of Harpokrates and Aiwass. Writing in the third person in Equinox of the Gods Crowley says:

"During the period March 23rd--April 8th, whatever else may have happened, it is at least certain that work was continued to some extent, that the inscriptions of the stele were translated for Fra. P.(Crowley), and that he paraphrased the latter in verse. For we find him using, or prepared to use, the same in the text of Liber Legis (Book of the Law)."

This says that during the time beween his discovery of the stele and his actual writing of the Book of the Law, Crowley had the stele translated and was more or less expecting a "revelation" that corresponded to his paraphrased interpretation of it. What he actually got was a lot of nonsense. For all of his "superhuman" help from Harpokrates and Aiwass, Crowley completely misidentified two of the deities on the stele. Horus the Elder he believed was "Houdit," a nonexistent deity. Ra-Harakhty he misidentified with Amon. He also believed "Houdit" and Nut (the one he got right) were lovers, though Egyptian myth tells us that Nut's lover was Geb. It seems clear, from reading his commentaries, that correctly identifying these deities was important to Crowley. He did try but was ultimately unsuccessful. Only after this failed attempt did he "discover" that Harpokrates' message was not ancient Egyptian after all, but Qabalistic (Hermetic), a subject with which he (Crowley) was vastly more at ease; and one that can be easily manipulated simply by changing the spelling of words and names.

"Prophets" are a penny a dozen; most don't even rate a blip on the radar screen. Occasionally one comes along who is particularly colorful or good at reading trends and attracts a following. The "Aeon of Horus" has come and gone; Crowley's biggest mistake was in claiming to know what the next 2000 years and beyond would hold.

The heart of Crowley's thinking boils down to "Do what you will."This is coterminous with "we are god" and "the truth is in you" and "trust in your heart."Crowley was a bit of a megalomaniac and indulged in flights of ecstasy about being the originator of this phrase, even claiming to be a better poet than Yeats.Or is it Aiwas that is a better poet than Yeats? After all, Crowley claims that this book was dictated by an angel named Aiwas. In either case, Crowley and Aiwas must be lying since Rabelais is the author of the phrase "Do what you will.""Do what you will" or "fay çe que vouldras" was the rule of the fictional Abbey of Thélème in the classic satire Gargantua by Rabelais. The many different origins of this book given by Crowley reminds me of the occultist Joseph Smith, who also made different accounts of the origin of the book of mormon. The writing is quite ridiculous. And its obsession over English 101 phrases mixed with nonsense gives credence to Crowley's caveat which can be rephrased a la Forrest Gump: "Stupid is as stupid does."Tell Nuit to put some clothes on: no wonder Crowley couldn't dictate any clear phrases.Alternatively, tell Aiwas to get some lessons on basic sentence structure and grammar."Love" is supposed to underlie "do what you will," yet all religious, especially Christians, are condemned in this book.Hmmm, that sounds like Joseph Smith too when he was told "all of their creeds were an abomination in His sight, that those professors were all corrupt" (PEARL OF GREAT PRICE, JS2:17-19).It seems trashing all that went before and making up your own stuff and claiming spirit guides as the source was the trend of 19th century cultists. If "love" is so important, this book contradicts itself. And Crowley contradicts himself since his hatred of ethnics and Christians belies "love."Quite inconsistent. And why he hates juwes, I have no idea, since the source of all his occultism is the cabala.Compare the biblical inspiration. The Bible is inspired by men over several thousand years that are in complete agreement. The heart of the ten commandments, which "do what thou wilt" is an impoverished rival, is love God with your heart, soul and mind and love your neighbor as yourself. For, if we loved God perfectly, and loved our neighbor perfectly, we wouldn't lie, cheat, steal, murder, and so on.Jesus reaffirmed this to the juwes who held instead to the Babylonian code of Hammurabi "an eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth."Matthew 5:38-42.And the Apostle Paul reaffirmed this when he said that if we have no love, our faith and hope is nothing.1 Corinthians 13.This is what St. Augustine meant when he said, "love and do as you please."(Sermon on the Epistle of St.. John, 7:8)However, due to sin, which is lawlessness, which is violating the commandments, which is violation of the love of God and love of man and "desiring to be like gods," mankind cannot "love and do as he pleases."We don't exercise such love and so fall short of the commandments and thus are condemned by the commandments.Instead, we need redemption from Jesus Christ who will transform our hearts to be more and more like him, delivering us from the penalty of sin, which is eternal damnation, delivering us from the affects of sin, as we grow in holiness, and delivering us from the presence of sin, at the final resurrection of the dead.Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins on the cross. That's why it is called "substitutionary" atonment. The wonderful consistency of the Old to New Testaments was becuase it was a story told twice:the sacrifices and lambs blood and symbols and so on in the Old Testament were a shadow or type of things to come; namely, Christ's death on the cross.Believe on Jesus Christ and confess to Him your sins, and don't listen to Crowley.Trust me, where he is now, he probably wishes he could recant.

This is a great text that is as odd as it is beautiful. I really love reading it, and it is both thought provoking and spooky at times. AC really should have had more commentary in this, but I understand why there isn't any. You can read it on line, but nothing beats having it handy for any time that you'd like to read or refer to it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Liked it...
Well, this bood was good in that it helped me bring together the concepts I learned in class.Seems like the casebooks can be all over the place and having a horn book like this was nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the best!
I really like this study aid because it was in outline form, which made it quick and easy to read.If you know there is a certain topic that you need to brush up on you can look at the Table of Contents and flip to the exact subject you need easily because it is well organized.

Additionally, the Exam Strategies are really helpful because they are little hints to remember. It reminds you to keep in mind something that is particularly tricky or special about a rule or subject matter.

This helped me learn the subject of property because it allowed me to supplement my class notes and fill in any holes that I had.It was easy to read and follow which made it extremely beneficial.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Study Guide
I bought this book as part of the The First Year Program which contains a total of five outlines (Civil Procedure, Contracts, Criminal Law, Property, and Torts), plus Gilbert's Dictionary of Legal Terms and Gilbert's 8 Secrets of Top Exam Performance in Law School by Charles Whitebread. It got me through my first year of law school and I highly recommend them to all first year law students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent supplement if you are using Krier's textbook
If you're using the Dukeminer, Krier, Alexander, Schill "Property" textbook, this supplement is a MUST.It explains everything incredibly clearly, and in the same order/structure as the book.So far, this has been the most useful Gilbert book I have purchased!!It has also made outlining incredibly easy. The only drawback of Gilbert in general is the books do not include very many pratice problems. In Property especially you need to practice applying the rules in Estates, Rule of Perpetuities, Real Covenents, etc.But for learning the rules, this book is outstanding.

Product Description
Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:Chapter III.THE LAW OF THE LEARNER.1. Passing from the side of the teacher to the side of the pupil, our next inquiry is for the Law of the Learner. Here the search must be for that one characteristic, if there be such, which divides and differentiates the learner from other persons — for that essential element which makes the learner a learner. Let us place before us the successful scholar, and note carefully whatever is peculiar and essential in his action and attributes. His intent look, his absorbed manner, his face full of eager action or of profound study, — all these are but so many signs of deep interest and active attention. This interest and attention, the inseparable parts of one mental state, make up the essential attribute of every true learner. The very power to learn lies in this interested attention. It is the one essential condition on which all learning is possible. It constitutes, therefore, the natural law of the learner, and may be stated in preceptive form as follows : —The learner must attend with interest to the fact or truth to be learned.2. The law thus stated will seem as trite as a common truism, but it is as really profound as it is seemingly simple. The plainest proof of its truth lies in the readiness with which every one will admit it. Its real depth can only be found by careful study.Attention Described.3. Avoiding as much as possible all metaphysical discussion, we may describe attention as a mental attitude — the attitude in which the thought-power is actively bent toward, or fastened upon, some object of thought or perception. It is an attitude, not of ease and repose, but of effort and exertion. It means not merely position and direction, but action. It is the will-power marshaling all the faculties of the mind for some ... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for teaching
There is an old saying, when confused with all the "stuff" out there about learning something, or developing skill, get back to the fundamentals. This book details the 7 laws of learning.Get back to basics, and be a better teacher in whatever arena of teaching you have an interest in.I coach basketball and have found this a great aid to make sure I'm getting information across to my players.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Seven Laws of Teaching
This is not the book that I thought it was, I needed for a class that I was teaching, but there are a lot of misspellings and it is inconsistent with the original "Seven Laws of Teaching"I am shipping this order back.

3-0 out of 5 stars A very left brain approach to teaching
I hate to be the one giving the lowest (so far) review for a book, but I just can't give this book more than three stars.I am a pastor now, but was a teacher in a classical school for three years.I read every book I could find on teaching and the Seven Laws of Teaching was one of them.

I do not want to come across as condescending to the other reviewers, but I found this book to be so obvious and basic that it taught me nothing new.For example, one of the laws is for the teacher to know their subject matter.Really?I thought that I could fake it and my teenagers would never notice. Not that this "law" isn't true or even important, but this wasn't news to me.I can't imagine trying to teach pre-schoolers without knowing my material backward and forward.

The second law is that we should capture the attention of our students.Think about that for just a second. Can you think of a scenario where a thinking human being would be teaching without the attention of their students and they would think that is normal?Yes, I realize there are teachers out there who will drone on and on while the students text each other, eat their lunches and do about anything except listen. But are you one of those teachers? If not, then this law is not going to make you a better teacher.

A third example of one of the laws is that the teacher should use language familiar to the student.Again, not trying to sound condescending, but is this news to you?I believe in using language that is sprinkled with challenging words so that they hear them in context and begin to build a stronger vocabulary. But obviously if they can't understand your vocabulary, you aren't going to reach them.

After the first three laws, they actually get much more enriching.Building on what students already know, arousing their desire to learn, learning being thinking ideas on your own and finally reviewing what has been learned to make it truly apprehended. These four laws are much more valuable, but there are other books that express them more powerfully than Mr. Gregory.

In my weekly podcast, Christian With A Brain, I discuss the role of education in the lives of believers and used The Seven Laws for reference. But, if you are like me and you believe that learning/teaching is more a product of relationship than the practice of principles, you will do better to purchase another book.I recommend: Teacher by Mark Edmundson - though he has a humanistic worldview, he taps into the art of teaching rather than the laws of teaching.Be warned though, Edmundson's book is a memoir, not a manual.

4-0 out of 5 stars Seven Laws of Teaching
The author has excellent suggestions for becoming a good teacher but the book starts slow.At times the material seems to be in the most complicated form and could be better understood in plain, every day terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful motivator
I really devoured this book.I found myself highlighting every paragraph and I even took notes. This is a wonderful look at teaching and how to utilize your skills to change lives, not just fill a young person's mind with information.Several of the quotes in the book have now become bold printed pages in my teaching notebook. ... Who are the ancient astronauts? Why did they first come to Earth? Why are they returning now? What part did they play in building the great monuments of antiquity? What part did they play in the formation of present and earlier civilizations? With what other beings do we share our universe? And where does the Earth fit into the cosmic scheme of things? Almost twenty years of experimental work with telepathy led to the "breakthrough" contact recorded in this book. The Ra Material is an account not only of the events leading up to this contact, but of over 200 pages of verbatim transcripts of each and every conversation! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting reading
I Thought it provide really good information about each subject. I really enjoyed reading the book. It is pretty simplified and very easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hang on you are in for a journey!
Hello all! It has been quite a while since i felt i needed to write a review. This book seems to ask most of the questions detailing the beliefs in the unknown in the UFO/Spiritual issue. If you are just beginning to take serious interests in this type genre then hang on because it is quite a bit to handle. Book II is tough to follow which I would recommend reading a second or third time since the page count is not to drawn out. As of this review i havent started Book III. Enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ra -- Ba or Ka
I did like reading this book and it opens up the possibility of an an infinite universe that is uniformly sacred - one in which every speck of sand on the beach and every being is of the fabric of the creator - The Law of One - one creator that creates infinite diversity and infinite love. That all life is about growth of consciousness and compassion and a progression through incarnations back to the source of Love and Compassion.Ideas that reflect Theosophical concepts as well as Gnostic, Buddhist and Mystics world wide.

The material is channeled -- as RA is an extra -terrestrial complex who watches over this little blue planet (as well as others) and expounds the virtue of Free Will and Love, Unity and Co-creation with our fellow beings. My interest with the material was inspired by my interest in Egypt as it has become increasingly clear to me that the purity of Ancient Egyptian religion form the inner core of not only the New Testament but much of the Old and many other western esoteric traditions. What Ra suggests is that these ideas have come to us from the stars.I might add that the Egyptian hieroglyphic for teacher is in fact - a star.

We are historically at a cusp where it serves our little planet to embrace The Law of One - or we will destroy our world through corporate and personal selfish greedand excessive negativity and aggression and disrespect of the god in all living things. The book is worth the read and opens up our way of looking at the universe not as a vehicle to expand technology but as vehicle for expanded Theology.

5-0 out of 5 stars The RA Material explains everything about everything!
The RA Material explains everything about everything and even more. In reading the full series of The Law of One Books, I discovered how little I knew about life, our perceived reality and its true purpose. The material contained within this set of books answers humanity's eternal questions; questions like "Who am I?" and "Why am I here?" The magnitude and brilliance of the truth revealed by The Law of One laid the foundation for the writing of my own book, "Flying Between Heaven and Earth." I wanted to offer another avenue for people to receive the messages brought to us by the RA Group through Don Elkins, Carla Rueckert, and Jim McCarty. If you really want answers, answers to questions that you could never think to ask, then you have come right place. You are in for the ride of your life with The RA Material!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Reading this material made me feel like I was reading a channeling of HAL in 2001: Space Odyssey - very robotic. While I couldn't agree more with the concept of "The Law of One," this material made it sound like a science text. If you're into reading about densities, colors, and the big, bad Orions over and over again, this material is for you. If not, try better cnanneled material from Barbara Marciniak/Pleiadians, Rasha/Oneness, King/P'taah, or Sanaya Roman/Orin.

On a positive note, it was interesting to read about the Pyramids, Abe Lincoln, and Atlantis, but those were the few gems found. ... Read more

Product Description
Laws of Power is a practical, readable guide for anyone who wants power, watches power, or want to arm themselves against power. Written by Robert Greene and produced and designed by Joost Elffers, the renowned packager of The Secret Language of Birthdays, The 48 Laws of Power will be known as the essential--and controversial--guide to modern manipulation. In a bold and elegant two-color package, The 48 Laws of Power synthesizes the philosophies of Machiavelli, Suntzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz, with the historical legacies of statesmen, warriors, seducers, and con men throughout the ages. Using the stories of such figures as Queen Elizabeth I, Henry Kissinger, and P. T. Barnum, the Laws are illustrated through the tactics, triumphs, and failures of those who have wielded-- and those who have been victimized by--Power.At work, in relationships, on the street, or on the five o'clock news, these Laws are exerted everywhere. Whether your interest is conquest, self-defense, or simply being an educated spectator, The 48 Laws of Power will be the most important book you buy this year.Amazon.com Review
"Learning the game of power requires a certain way of looking at the world,a shifting of perspective," writes Robert Greene. Mastery of one's emotionsand the arts of deception and indirection are, he goes on to assert, essential. The 48 laws outlined in this book "have a simple premise:certain actions always increase one's power ... while others decrease it andeven ruin us."

The laws cull their principles from many great schemers--and scheminginstructors--throughout history, from Sun-Tzu to Talleyrand, from Casanovato con man Yellow Kid Weil. They are straightforward in their amoralsimplicity: "Get others to do the work for you, but always take thecredit," or "Discover each man's thumbscrew." Each chapter providesexamples of the consequences of observance or transgression of the law, along with "keys to power," potential "reversals" (where the converse ofthe law might also be useful), and a single paragraph cleverly laid out tosuggest an image (such as the aforementioned thumbscrew); the marginsare filled with illustrative quotations. Practitioners of one-upmanship havebeen given a new, comprehensive training manual, as up-to-date as it istimeless. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Positive
Product arrived in good time and I was pleasantly surprised at the condition.I would not know it was not new.Did not even look shopworn.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Power...Manipulation
If you were an honest person you would call this book The 48 Laws of Manipulation. Does the stuff talked about in this book work? You bet they do. The author has simply taken psychology 101, and compiled everything that can be used to ones advantage. Is it really "power" when you are making others see a person that doesn't really exist? I guess you could say that, because you are influencing them. But the power is not a pure power, it is a corrupt power. You are setting the stage for illusion. You are living a lie. And you are possibly hurting people in your rise to "power".
I give it one star because everyone has a deep seeded desire to be powerful. Powerful in their own right maybe, but the title is misleading. To be powerful does not mean one has to do the things in this book. There are many paths to gaining power. This book defines a darker path in obtaining that stature. Manipulation is much more appropriate for the suggestions in this book. Manipulation through dishonesty and maintaining that illusion is what you are going to learn...not how to be powerful!
Here's a guarantee this author will never give you...people always eventually realize they are being manipulated, unless you are lucky enough to be working with a bunch of mindless robots or chimpanzees. Once you've been found out, how easy do you think it will be to earn back their trust and respect? Everyone has at some time or another realized a co worker is brown nosing the boss or making everyone else look bad in order to secure a promotion. Didn't it make you want to linch the brown-noser? So now you want to be the brown noser and be hated by everyone else? Man, if so, maybe you have bigger problems than a desire to be powerful. Perhaps, you ought to be searching for books on confidence.

3-0 out of 5 stars have not read it yet
Knowledge is power, knowledge of True Love is ultimate power.Infinite virtue is Love and Love reigns supreme over nearly everybody.

2-0 out of 5 stars Chuck's Review
A very heavy read and a bit of a disappointment.Too wordy for the message and, frankly, lazily researched. How many times can P. T. Barnum be used to illustrate different points on personal power?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, a must read for those in higher levels of business
Clearly, there are reviewers here that do not "get it".This is a powerful book that must be read multiple times to truly absorb its content for practical application. While intense reading, it does provide a "realistic" perspective on how power, and those people with power, MAY function.I've carried a copy for many years and find it invaluable... ... Product Description
The bestselling business classic that Raytheon CEO
William Swanson made famous.

Every once in awhile, there is a book with a message so timeless, so universal, that it transcends generations. The Unwritten Laws of Business is such a book. Originally published over 60 years ago as The Unwritten Laws of Engineering, it has sold over 100,000 copies, despite the fact that it has never been available before to general readers. Fully revised for business readers today, here are but a few of the gems you’ll find in this little-known business classic:

If you take care of your present job well, the future will take care of itself.
The individual who says nothing is usually credited with having nothing to say.
Whenever you are performing someone else’s function, you are probably neglecting your own.
Martyrdom only rarely makes heroes, and in the business world, such heroes and martyrs often find themselves unemployed.

Refreshingly free ofthe latest business fads and jargon, this is a book that is wise and insightful, capturing and distilling the timeless truths and principles that underlie management and business the world over.

The little book with the big history.

In the summer of 2005, Business 2.0 published a cover story on Raytheon CEO William Swanson’s self-published pamphlet, Swanson’s Unwritten Rules of Management. Lauded by such chief executives as Jack Welch and Warren Buffett, the booklet became
a quiet phenomenon.

As it turned out, much of Swanson’s book drew from a classic of business literature that has been in print for more than sixty years. Now, in a new edition revised and updated for business readers today, we are reissuing the 1944 classic that inspired a number of Swanson’s “rules”: The Unwritten Laws of Business. Filled with sage advice and written in a spare, engaging style, The Unwritten Laws of Business offers insights on working with others, reporting to a boss, organizing a project, running a meeting, advancing your career, and more. Here’s just a sprinkling of the old-fashioned, yet surprisingly relevant, wisdom you’ll find in these pages:

If you have no intention of listening to, considering, and perhaps using, someone’s opinion, don’t ask for it.
Count any meeting a failure that does not end up with a definite understanding as to what’s going to be done, who’s going to do it, and when.
The common belief that everyone can do anything if they just try hard enough is a formula for inefficiency at best and for complete failure at worst.
It is natural enough to “look out for Number One first,” but when you do, your associates will be noticeably disinclined to look out for you.

Whether you’re a corporate neophyte or seasoned manager, this charming book reveals everything you need to know about the “unwritten” laws of business. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a compact business rules bible for all managers.
i have written a lot of books about management, strategy, and all that.
but this small book is, by far, the best of all.
recommended for everyone that has to do anything with management. period!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read
A Must-read book for folks who are new to the Big and Bad Corporate World. It teaches you a lot of things which no one would teach you. By the time experience teaches you these things it would be too late. So if you want to get ahead, grab this book, read it word-by-word and follow its sayings till you are in business.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good resume of many business books
Sound advices on management, ethics, leadership, communication, coordination, etc, that are insipred from best practices. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every College Graduate Should Buy This Book
I have been in business for over a decade and I live and breathe by many of the principles discussed in this book.I discovered these directives on my own through trial and error (mostly error) and from my numerous mentors.I certainly would have been better off if I had been exposed to this book as a graduate. The directives are quite simple but without them laid out in such simple terms and put into context most people would completely miss them.I will be purchasing this book for my kids their senior year of college.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Important Little Book
The book has a unique charm to it that will prompt many readers to revisit, reread and highlight sections throughout their careers.

The chief obstacles to career success are personal and administrative in nature with problems arising from the violation of the unwritten laws of professional conduct rather than errors relating directly to work. That was W.J. King's observation in 1944 and he expanded on that observation in a series of three articles for "Mechanical Engineering". That series of articles was published as a book The Unwritten Laws of Engineering. For some sixty years, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers published this book to an audience of mechanical engineers. The book was rescued from general obscurity by William H. Swanson, Raytheon's Chief Executive Officer.Swanson referenced this book in his famous pamphlet on corporate management. Effective career guidance has no expiration date and this book has been updated, retitled and published in the popular business press version.

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering became an underground classic and with more than 100,000 copies published over sixty years. This book was often given to new engineers at the beginning of their careers as helpful professional guidance. This "little big book" is straight forward in its approach and succinct in its guidance. This book of less than 110 pages is subdivided into three sections - "What the beginner needs to learn at once", "Relating chiefly to managers" and "Professional and personal considerations".What is affirming is that so many of these principles and laws outlined in 1944 for mechanical engineers remain true and pungent today for professionals.

Today's business literature is replete with list-driven works that will, reputedly, effectively address problems as varied as strategic planning to the effective use of e-mail.The "flavor of the month" approach has dominated much of the popular business literature as a whole. What is remarkable about the The Unwritten Laws of Business is that this small book may actually be read instead of just being prominently displayed on office bookshelves. The principles outlined in this work are certainly not new or especially novel to the experienced manager, for example:

· If you have no intention of listening to, considering, and perhaps using someone's opinion don't ask for it.
· The common belief that everyone can do anything if they just try hard enough is a formula for inefficiency at best and for complete failure at worst.
· Never miss a chance to commend or reward subordinates for a job well done.

Even in our era, that is better known for its regulatory oversight and litigation, these principles and "unwritten laws" still ring true and clear. These laws are time tested and proven guides to professional and administrative behavior in large and small, public, private and non-profit organizations.Individual career success is situationally dependent and is often a complex undertaking; however, the application of these laws and principles will most certainly reduce both the frequency and magnitude of crisis in the early years of a professional career.

The book does earn its label as a little big book.It is an interesting and useful guide, although by design not a comprehensive guide to career success. It is a useful book for both the seasoned employee and the novice, alike and is a welcome addition to any professional's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This was a wonderful companion book to my casebook. It was very clear and helped me clear up many fuzzy concepts. I would recommend it to anyone needing a little extra help with the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Con Law without it
Con Law is a topic I have very little love for. Thankfully this book has taken some of the sting out of the class. I used a friends first semester and like it enough I bought one for myself for Con Law II. It's set up succinctly and makes the rules and analysis' a tad more palatable. Highly recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Textbook for class
Wow this is a slow, boring read, but it does cover Businesss Law in depth. Very thick.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst text book I have encountered
This is by far the worst textbook I have ever purchased. Aside from its rediculous suggested retail price of $200, which Iwill not get into, the text is so confusing and not a very good fit for an Intro to Business Law class.

The text is loaded with so many densely written pages of unusually small print. Not only did I have to pull out a pair of reading glasses to read it but then I started to doubt my reading skills and ability to understand what I have been trying to process.
This text is not set up with a study guide, it doesnt point out any terms and concepts in a way that might guide and teach you and absolutely does not include any sort of end of the chapter recap or review. It just delves rightinto cases without providing a logical structure or guide. I have spent almost as much time on Wikipidea as i have trying to understand what i am reading. It is extremely confusing and I caution anyone who has an Intro to Bus class with an instructor who is not very clear, doesnt like to elaborate in their lectures, and expects you to be independent in general to forget about this purchase and find an instructor who knows how to select a textbook that will acutally provide an education instead of a nervous breakdown.
