The efficient and effective creation, transfer, sharing and management of knowledge remain on the critical business agenda. They are key methods of gaining and sustaining competitive advantage for relatively little financial investment.

Knowledge management is equally applicable to the intangible and the tangible. The management of knowledge and therefore diversity also grows in significance the quicker and more complex organisations become. These issues are important for businesses both small and large, and this book has been written to address companies of all sizes.

With effective knowledge management you can expect a reinvigorated corporate culture, an accessible pool of talent and creativity, a motivated and flexible workforce, loyal customers and more efficient systems and processes. This book will enable you to benchmark best practice, measure and leverage intangible assets, and implement quickly and effectively relevant knowledge management practices. The Internation version is word for word the same as the English version except for the slight difference in page numbers. This is my 2nd Int'l textbook & for the difference in price, it is worthwhile.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for a college course
This book got thirteen chapters covering 4Ps, marketing research, consumer behavior, market segmentation, integrated communication, distribution, personal selling, pricing, marketing of services, and global marketing.
There are four sections of cases, from short one to in-depth study.

I use this book as a college-level course.Final projects were done using these cases.Students like the book.
The book will be better if it includes fewer cases, but more thorough analysis of the cases.

Contrary to other critics here, I believe the book is very good. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for certification purposes
I find this book (just like the rest of PMI's standards) a very important reference for those wishing to acquire the "text book" knowledge, and very important for certification purposes.
But if you are looking for practical knowledge, and details on how to implement OPM3 on your organization, or on clients, then I recomend other books like "Every Organization can implement OPM3".
Hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
An outstanding book on developing taxonomies for repositories, companies, and websites. Packed with useful information and well worth the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
My two co-reviewers appear to have a vastly greater experience in this field, and I was pretty much flying blind when I plunked down $60+ USD for a paperback. The other reviewers have a pretty good opinion of this book, and many of the alternative books suggested did not get great reviews. However, the other reviewers sound like experts and I wasn't sure the book would be useful to me, a beginner trying to get a maximum amount of understanding of taxonomy for a minumum investment of time and money.

They were right about the value of Organising Knowledge.I don't want "Taxonomy for Dummies" and O. K. is not that book, but it CAN serve the same need.If you are new to the field, or even if you have been doing this work in your company for several years and want to know more of what your company's taxonomy-Jedi Knights are talking about, start here.(If you are an expert, read the other reviews and make your decision.)

It is becoming my business to set up wikis for people.Reading Organising Knowledge is helping me to think about how to create the basic structures, rather than starting with randomly-selected keywords and hoping everyone will think of the same descriptors.

This isn't light reading. However, it's only difficult in that the material is new to me.The writing is clear and I'm not having any trouble following, if my brain would only not go off on so many side trail along the lines of "Oh, I could do THAT for this client..." or "NOW I see what those other clients were talking about..."

So:from the newbie seats--good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and useful insights into taxonomies
Patrick Lambe provides excellent insights and tips for anyone facing a project to design and implement an enterprise content management system. Through many thought-provoking examples, he makes it clear that a collection of unstructured data is only as good as the effort that went into its organization, and he demonstrates the critical need for collaborating with the content providers and consumers to understand their thought processes and expectations. Some of the examples include some very uncomfortable lessons about the dangers of badly conceived taxonomies. He also makes the subject very interesting by placing the art of taxonomy in its historical context, showing us how various dynamic individuals developed classification systems that are now widely deployed and have an impact on everyday life. This book is highly recommended to anyone interested in the implications of the enormous amount of digital information accumulating at an ever-increasing rate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Organising Knowledge: Taxonomies Matter!
If I follow the writing principle of bottom line and idea first then I would have to say Patrick Lambe's "Organising Knowledge: Taxonomies, Knowledge and Organisational Effectiveness" is a five-star publication.Using the four-point scale Study, Read, Skim, Bin as a guide to the effort that might be invested, this book definitely warrants a Study rating. So what's so good about the book?

Well judging by my margin scribbles and underlining lots!First it is an entertaining, coherent and easy read.Patrick's assertion that - "If taxonomies classify, describe and map knowledge domains, then taxonomy work is made up of the things we must do to achieve that outcome:listing, creating and modifying categories, standardising, mapping, representing, discovering native vocabularies and categories, negotiating common terms" (p. 11) - resonates with me and is an example of the practical flavour of the book. Similarly I found Patrick's taxonomy forms - lists, trees, hierarchies, poly-hierarchies, matrices, facets, and system maps - to be a useful classification and a guide to why some taxonomies fail and others succeed.

I must admit that I had never considered in any detail how our reasoning patterns impact on our taxonomies. Most of us reason by beginning in the middle and generalising upwards and differentiating downwards. It's an interesting insight which explains why so many tree structures don't work. I suspect we like tree structures because they are easy to understand and they at first impose order onto chaos.

I do think one or two longbows are drawn with some of the examples in the book - the Victoria Climbie child abuse discussion being a case in point. The archetype typology - a special type of taxonomy - is another. Despite this the examples serve to show in a practical way how a well designed taxonomy can help in knowledge discovery and knowledge articulation.

Perhaps one of the most interesting insights in the book is the notion of taxonomies as boundary objects. A well designed taxonomy can allow different groups of people to find common ground and therefore communicate. One example is communication between amateur ornithologists and professional zoologists.Another is communication between economists and health professionals through the International Classification of Diseases taxonomy.

Patrick signed my copy on the 14th of August 2007, and wrote the following comment on the front page - "For Graham in the hope you will find this useful!"Well I've skimmed the book more times than I can remember, I've studied it twice, and read it twice (both in a single sitting)! The book is very useful and should be on the shelf of anyone who professes to be a knowledge management practitioner. In my view it should also be mandatory reading for students of library science, knowledge management and information management. I'm certainly convinced that taxonomies matter!

Product Description
This textbook provides a critical review and analysis of the key themes that underpin the subject of knowledge management in organizations. Adopting a thematic approach, Hislop presents the key debates and a wide range of perspectives in knowledge management. The book begins by presenting the epistemologies of knowledge, asking what do we mean by knowledge? How is knowledge processed within the organization, and how is this linked to human motivation.Part 2 discusses the social and cultural issues that surround the managing and sharing of knowledge. The dynamics of knowledge sharing and knowledge generation are examined, illustrating the different aspects of the collective and shared nature of organizational knowledge. This section also looks at how knowledge processes are shaped by the conflict and politics within the organization and demonstrates how and why knowledge and power are inextricably linked. Finally, the roles of information technology in the process of knowledge management and that of HRM and culture - the human element of knowledge - are presented.Part 3 examines how we learn and acquire knowledge and examines the debates surrounding the learning organization. Finally, the book moves away from its thematic approach to specifically examine the character and dynamics of knowledge sharing in three contemporary organizational forms: the networked/virtual organization, global multinationals and, knowledge intensive firms and knowledge workers. ... Product Description
National Standards Institute in March 2001.The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) is an inclusive term that describes the sum of knowledge within the profession of project management. The PMBOK® Guide identifies and describes the subset of principles and practices within the PMBOK® that are generally accepted and applicable to most projects most of the time. The guide also provides a common lexicon for talking about project management. Project management is a relatively young profession, and while there is substantial commonality around what is done, there is relatively little commonality in the terms used. An extensive glossary further aids in standardizing definitions of the most important concepts, terms, and phrases. The Project Management Institute (PMI®) uses the PMBOK® Guide as one of the references for the Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification Examination. Major revisions and expansions of this edition include:? Aligned newly added processes, tools, and techniques with the five project processes and nine knowledge areas. For example, reserve time, variance analysis, and activity attributes were added to Chapter 6 (Project Time Management); estimating publications and earned value were added to Chapter 7 (Project Cost Management); and project reports, project presentations, and project closure were added to Chapter 10 (Project Communications Management).? Added a section in Chapter 2 to acknowledge the role of the Project Office; expanded the treatment of earned value management in Chapter 4 and Chapter 10; and added a brief discussion of the Theory of Constraints in Chapter 6.? Expanded Chapter 11 (Project Risk Management) to include six processes instead of the previous four: Risk Management Planning, Risk Identification, Risk Assessment, Risk Quantification, Risk Response Planning, and Risk Monitoring and Control.? Product Description
This book provides an introduction to the field of knowledge management. Taking a learning-centric rather than information-centric approach, it emphasizes the continuous acquisition and application of knowledge. The book is organized into three sections, each opening with a classic work from a leader in the field. The first section, Strategy, discusses the motivation for knowledge management and how to structure a knowledge management program. The second section, Process, discusses the use of knowledge management to make existing practices more effective, the speeding up of organizational learning, and effective methods for implementing knowledge management. The third section, Metrics, discusses how to measure the impact of knowledge management on an organization. In addition to the classic essays, each section contains unpublished works that further develop the foundational concepts and strategies. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The learning-centric alternative for knowledge management
At the start of each episode of the mysterious, brain-twisting 1960s spy/science fiction series, The Prisoner, Patrick McGoohan would declare: "I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered!" This could well be the rallying cry for the perspective on knowledge management taken by the contributors to this 451-page volume. The 18 pieces are gathered into three groups covering strategy, process, and metrics. Although the volume can certainly serve well as a general introduction to knowledge management, the editors make no bones about their distinctly learning-centric (as distinct from information-centric) perspective that they take.

The information-centric approach, which has been dominant in the field until recently (and still is among consultants with IT systems to sell), emphasizes knowledge as explicit, and as susceptible of being captured, stored, and processed. The contributors to this book instead emphasize the continuous generation, acquisition and application of knowledge in its human and cultural context. This perspective permeates each of the essays and all three of the sections. Those sections begin with a classic work then move onto more contemporary thinking along compatible lines.

The "Strategy" section, which begins with two pieces by Peter Senge, examines the motivation for knowledge management and explores how to structure a knowledge management program. Takeuchi and Nonaka's classic paper, "Theory of Organizational Knowledge Creation" opens the "Process" section, which looks at how managers can implement knowledge management effectively, applying it to help make existing practices more effective and to speed up organizational learning. The final section on Metrics covers the use of the Balanced Scorecard, the measurement of intangibles, and metrics for knowledge sharing.

Busy executives need not be deterred by the length of this book. They can read the opening classic pieces, then look only at those following pieces with the most relevance to their concerns and circumstances. Margaret Wheatley's introduction, "Can Knowledge Management Succeed Where Other Efforts Have Failed?", is well worth reading for her concise and lucid account of the common beliefs in organizations that have caused problems for KM. These include beliefs that organizations are machines, only material things are real, that only numbers are real, that you can only manage what you can measure, and that technology is the savior.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best KM book out there
There are certainly a few nuggets to be extracted from this volume but it is not a very compelling read. The MIT slant is obvious due to the multiple inclusions of Peter Senge.Yes there is a reprint of the seminal Balanced Scorecard article from the HBR included in this compilation but I really considered most of the papers included in this collection to be extremely uninteresting. Many of the articles provide nothing other than a state of affairs for knowledge management and while they are well researched they are totally dated.Anyone who has read a relatively recent book on the subject of KM will be familiar with the content contained within this volume.Furthermore many of these articles can be found free of charge on the internet as they were published far and wide at their inception.Sure it touches on the major components of knowledge mangement but in my opinion I found the case work to be so general that any *term of the moment* could be substituted for knowledge management.Spend your cash elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge!
This book offers a learning-centered introduction to the field of knowledge management. Each of the three sections (Strategy, Process, Metrics) sets the tone with an opening essay by a well known authority in the field. Several previously unpublished essays that develop the chapter follow each opening piece. This convenient plan makes it possible for time-pressed readers to get the gist of the matter by reading only three or four essays in the area that most concerns them. It also allows readers with a consuming interest in the subject to get all of the details they could possibly desire. Some of the essays are accessible; some are quite heavy going, laden with jargon and dense academic prose that only a specialist could decipher. Thus, we are grateful that the editors have made it so easy for readers to find what they need to know in this well-organized, thorough study of the field of knowledge management.
