Product Description
Here are two dozen tales in the grand adventure of engineering from the Henry Petroski, who has been called America’s poet laureate of technology. Pushing the Limits celebrates some of the largest things we have created–bridges, dams, buildings--and provides a startling new vision of engineering’s past, its present, and its future. Along the way it highlights our greatest successes, like London’s Tower Bridge; our most ambitious projects, like China’s Three Gorges Dam; our most embarrassing moments, like the wobbly Millennium Bridge in London; and our greatest failures, like the collapse of the twin towers on September 11. Throughout, Petroski provides fascinating and provocative insights into the world of technology with his trademark erudition and enthusiasm for the subject. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable perspective for a layman
I have been reading Dr Petroski's books for a long time. I was particularly struck by the study of the Texas A&M Bonfire collapse. I was impressed that he went beyond the "nuts and bolts" of physicial studies of materials and failure analysis. The comments on psychological factors was insightful and engaging.

Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Tells stories of daring enterprises
In the push for longer bridges, taller buildings and larger-scale projects of all sizes, engineers face new challenges which go beyond physics to tackle the aesthetics and functionality of engineering itself. Henry Petroski's PUSHING THE LIMITS tells stories of daring enterprizes which envisioned engineering achievements beyond ordinary measure; from Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Bridge to China's Three Gorges Dam project. His isn't just a celebration of technological achievement either: PUSHING THE LIMITS also examines the underlying costs and problems of such projects, focusing on both design and human challenges in the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engineering Successes and Failures
It's pretty clear that Mr. Petroski likes bridges. I do to. In fact I just recently drove many miles out of my way to go see the new Sundial bridge designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava in Redding, California. My one complaint here would be that I'd sure like to have seen more pictures. His words are elequent, his descriptions great, but remember the bit about picture and a thousand words.

Bridges take up about half the book. then he goes on to describe an eclectic collection of engineering projects that don't quite fit together but which make nice little essays of their own.

Interesting enough, a couple of his essays cover engineering projects that failed. In his interestingly named Vanities of the Bonfire, he gives an engineering report of the collapse of the stack of logs that made up the 1999 bonfire at Texas A&M. It would be very amusing except that it killed a dozen people and injured several more. Consistent with todays law suit environment, it is now estimated that a new bonfire would cost between one and one and a half million dollars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Bridges
This book is a worthwhile addition to Petroski's accounts of adventures in engineering. His many essays on the possibilities of gutsy achievement in large scale engineering is leavened by cautionary tales of overconfidence and hubris. His stories are especially enlivened by his lacing some of his personal experiences with encountering the structures with erudite discussions of the technical challenges faced by the engineers and sometimes lyrical peans to the beauty of the artifacts they had created.

I especially appreciated his chapter on his visit to the Three Gorges--a place I hope to visit soon. And the one about London'sMillennium Bridge and the Wheel was tops too.

On the other hand, it is apparent that the book is rather unevenly done. It is a collection of essays that do not tie together very well. The chapter on fuel cells near the end of the book seems quite out of place and pedantic to boot. And while the book has 28 illustrations, most of them are pretty cheesy--it really needs more and better pictures.

But overall, I enjoyed the book and I'll be using it to enhance my visits to some of the same places that he describes so well. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent executive level intro
While starting to show its age, Moriarty's text is a sound introduction to the executive-level or program manager as to what his safety guys are doing, why they hold up his schedule and why he pays them so much.

For the supervised safety practitioner the text introduces common concepts but doesn't really do modern, embedded control systems justice.

The text is expensive and not what I would consider value for money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall a good book with some problems.
Overall, the book does a great job of covering the many areas of System Safety. It is the best book I've found on the topic.

However, this year I started teaching from this book. And when you teach you really discoverthe shortcomings of a text. It is frustrating when the author uses acronymswithout explaination. I've also been running into minor math errors oroversights in formulas (e.g. defining a function f(x) and using 't' in theequation as the independent variable).

I think the attempt to cover allof the material resulted in a brief overview of these areas and took awayfrom the quality of coverage. Still, I haven't seen a better book on thetopic and if the worst you can say is that it could have been better, thatsnot bad. ... Read more

Product Description
Control of engineering documentation, sometimes called Configuration Management (CM) especially in the defense industries, is critical to world-class manufacturing survival. This new Second Edition of a highly successful engineering documentation handbook is one of the best blueprints for constructive, efficient EDC/CM ever published.

Use the Engineering Documentation Control Handbook to get on track right away and make the release of new products and their documentation flow smoothly and easily. The book is packed with specific methods that can be applied quickly and accurately to almost any industry and any product to control documentation, request changes to the product, make those changes and develop bills of material. The result is a powerful communications bridge between engineering and "the rest of the world" that makes rapid changes in products and documentation possible. With the help of the simple techniques in the handbook, companies can gain and hold their competitive advantages in a world that demands flexibility and quick reflexes -- and has no sympathy for delays.

The new edition contains substantial additions worked into the book and several new chapters. However, the thrust of the book retains the same focus on basics, rules and reasons. The author emphasizes that EDC or CM must be recognized as a key business strategy, and the days of "throwing it over the wall" are gone forever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Engineering Documentation
I am a British Chartered Engineer working mainly in Blue Chip energy-related companies. I have just started using this book in my work and find it strongly re-enforces my passion for excellent documentation and design management. It is clearly the current 'bible' forEngineering Documentation Control and is extremely valuable in showing how to climb the 'Configuration Management Ladder' (page 8). It cuts away the dross and complexity that is plentiful nearly everywhere else. So many of us technologists and managers are struggling with hugely powerful new computer packages that integrate most processes in our companies. This is one of the very few books to chart our course and give us a chance of a reliable way through to simplicity, speed and profitability that are so often promissed but so rarely fully attained.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Industry Configuration Management Resource...
...but not for Software CM.
As the title says, this is an Industry CM book.If your need is for Software CM, this book can be used for general CM concepts and background (and to develop a strong understanding of CM principles), but no more (get a software-specific CM/release management book instead).Only a few brief mentions of application of these concepts to software CM.If your need is for doc. control/industry CM, then this is probably an ideal book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Inroduction to CM
Unlike the vast majority of books available on configuration management, this book, as the title suggests, focuses entirely on configuration management in industry.Throughout the book, the author focuses on a simplified, fast configuration management system that exceeds DoD standards. This book, in the chapters titled Change Control and Fast Change, has an exceptional explanation of how to handle configuration modifications. In these chapters the author gives a detailed description of how to set up a system that allows the fastest possible changes to take place. Also, many case studies are given in these sections which provide further insight as to how to implement the correct system for a given situation.Overall, the book is very easy to understand, and serves as an excellent introduction and handbook to a configuration management system for industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crisp and practical guide to setting up a CM system.
This book explains the theory but includes plenty of examples of how to set up an Engineering Document Control, or Configuration Management (CM) system. The examples in the text focus on an imaginary manufacturingcompany. The text does include some mention of tailoring a CM system forsoftware developers.

The text is crisp and the books organization clearand logical. One of the last chapters includes what is essentially achecklist of how to put together a CM system.

This is not a one sizefits all system. The user must use the material in the book as a guide totailor a CM system to their company's requirements.

Overall anindispensable book for someone trying to set up or overhaul a CM system.Ihighly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
Engineering Ethics is the application of philosophical and moral systems to the proper judgment and behavior by engineers in conducting their work, including the products and systems they design and the consulting services they provide. In light of the work environment that inspired the new Sarbanes/Oxley federal legislation on "whistle-blowing" protections, a clear understanding of Engineering Ethics is needed like never before.

Beginning with a concise overview of various approaches to engineering ethics, the real heart of the book will be some 13 detailed case studies, delving into the history behind each one, the official outcome and the "real story" behind what happened.Using a consistent format and organization for each one-giving background, historical summary, news media effects, outcome and interpretation--these case histories will be used to clearly illustrate the ethics issues at play and what should or should not have been done by the engineers, scientists and managers involved in each instance.

* Covers importance and practical benefits of systematic ethical behavior in any engineering work environment.
* Only book to explain implications of the Sarbanes/Oxley "Whistle-Blowing" federal legislation
* 13 actual case histories, plus 10 additional "anonymous" case histories-in consistent format-will clearly demonstrate the relevance of ethics in the outcomes of each one

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor value, lazy writing
Engineering Ethics by Gail Baura is a sad attempt at writing a book.At around 200 pages, the $40 price is hardly justified.Over 35 out of 200 pages are "applicable regulations" where the author copies and pastes pieces of applicable U.S. Code or other regulation.Instead of summarizing the codes for the reader, the author lazily puts it there for us to figure out for ourselves. The case studies are uninspiring and don't always cover ethical dilemmas very well (the Y2K chapter is simply a summary of what happened, and never goes deeper into the topic and who should have paid for the billions of dollars needed to prepare for the event).Overall, I would recommend finding another ethics book. While this one is an easy read, it is severely lacking in quality for the high price it sells for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Value & Quality
The book presents some discussion towards philosophical theories related to ethical conduct and character.Several case studies are provided with informative illustrations of ethical thresholds, dilemmas, and classifications of misconduct. The book mainly comprises of engineers experience in ethical incidents and quotations of codes of practice and pertinent laws.

In my opinion, the book is informative but shy in presenting solutions. There is a degree of overstating the limitations of ethical theorems, specifically duty ethics.

Product Description

With their ability to cross traditional boundaries and achieve a level of functionality greater than their component elements, mega-systems have helped corporations and government organizations around the world resolve complex challenges that they otherwise couldn’t address with stand-alone systems. Engineering Mega-Systems: The Challenge of Systems Engineering in the Information Age provides a clear understanding of the engineering of this class of systems—a process that demands consideration of increasing program scale and the rapid change of underlying technologies.

Written by Renee Stevens, a Senior Principal Engineer at The MITRE Corporation with decades of experience analyzing, engineering, and acquiring large-scale systems for the U.S. Department of Defense and other government agencies, this book explains how the engineering of mega-systems is inherently different from that of large-scale monolithic systems. It supplies the vocabulary and framework needed to explore the issues relevant to mega-systems. This framework then evolves into the Profiler diagnostic tool that helps you understand the nature and context of the system at hand and, on that basis, select the most appropriate processes, tools, and techniques.

Stevens examines commercial and government applications of mega-systems to provide insight into the contemporary challenges of engineering these systems in three critical dimensions: engineering processes, management processes, and the larger context in which these systems are developed and deployed. Complete with two case studies in engineering mega-systems that illustrate valuable lessons learned and highlight emerging practices, this book supplies the understanding and the tools needed to begin engineering, characterizing, and acquiring mega-systems across multiple dimensions.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Dated, But Still a Valuable Resource

Yes, it's resource. This is one of those books that an engineer will want to keep as a reference. The material is both technical and explanatory and in this case, is a required University text. The material is semi-recent and is general to all engineering problems with regard to Human Machine Interaction. It details the physiology, geometry and math of such interactions, the cognitive psychology and the issues of safety and health of workers and employer obligations for their health and safety, as well as production efficiency and accuracy of results. It exposes research values and mathematical relativity of human physiology, cognition and machine controls as well as environmental contexts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book on Human factors
"Human Factors in Engineering and Design" is a well researched book that is recommended for anyone studying ergonomics and human factor issues in engineering and design, particularly at undergraduate level. It is a comprehensive coverage of the various relevant and pertinent topics that students and practitioners should find useful.

The topics covered include information input, human output and control, workplace design, environmental conditions and human factor applications. I found the book to contain all the information pertaining to human factors that I needed, although some few areas are outdated, which however, did little to diminish the import and utility of the book.

The book is well written in simple, plain English making it easily understandable to a wide audience. The only drawback is the price, which some students may find a bit steep, even though it is well worth it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Written by an Engineer for Engineers: Factual but ZZz.zZZzz...
I guess this is the engineering student's nightmare. You would have to slug through a book with numbers and concepts minus the presentation. It's a good book for the subject matter if you can bear the torture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Survey of Human Factors
Sanders text is a review of all the significant areas of Human Factors technology.Over the years, Sanders has developed the best textbook in the field with the best examolws of applications. Recommended for everyone in this field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great beginners manual for breadth of Human Factors
This book is an excellent beginner's manual for Human Factors. It is used in several college's Human Factor's initial courses.

The topics it covers are the basic "physical" human factors topics. There is breadth but not depth. However it does not do much with UI design. There is nothing on Web design or computer station design.

This book's data is limited to examples that illustrate various points in the book.If you need detailed anthropometric data or workspace recoommendations you won't find it here.

Alan Cooper's book About face can help you with the UI part.

Jakob Nielson's Web Usability or Steve Krug's Don't make me think book can give you information on Web design.

Woodson's Human Factors Design Handbook can help you with the computer station part.At lot of money for just this though.

If you need detailed anthropmetric date, the sources I am most familiar with are:

Human Factors Design Handbook by Woodson(though it is a biased sample, if this is all you can get it is better than nothing) Woodson's newer book (2nd edition) gives computer station information, but is pricey for just this.

The measure of Man and Woman by Henry Dreyfuss and Associates (dated in 1970s)

BodySpace by Stephen Pheasant (in metric)

International data on Anthropometry by Hans W. Jurgens (gives you some international data found nowhere else).

Another thing that may help you is the table of contents:

Product Description
Solving Problems in Food Engineering is a step by step workbook intended to enhance students' understanding of complicated concepts and to help them practice solving food engineering problems. The book covers problems in fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, and the most common unit operations that have applications in food processing, such as thermal processing, cooling and freezing, evaporation, psychrometrics and drying. Included are theoretical questions in the form of true or false, solved problems, semi-solved problems, and problems solved using a computer. The semi-solved problems guide students through the solution. Some of the problems progress from elementary level increasing difficulty so that the book is useful to food science as well as food engineering students.A CD-Rom is supplied with the book, which contains spreadsheet solutions of problems that require the use of a computer, such as transient heat and mass transfer problems, simulation of 2 and 4-effect evaporators, freezing of a 2-D solid, drying and others.
