Product Description

This proven and internationally recognized text teaches the methods of engineering design as a condition of successful product development. It breaks down the design process into phases and then into distinct steps, each with its own working methods. The book provides more examples of product development; it also tightens the scientific bases of its design ideas with new solution fields in composite components, building methods, mechatronics and adaptronics. The economics of design and development are covered and electronic design process technology integrated into its methods. The book is sharply written and well-illustrated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, dry, clear illustrative and not shallow
I think this book is an absolute MUST READ for any engineer no matter what your product is accounting software or diesel engines. I have discovered this title in a reference section of Brook's new "Design of design" and I was captured by it from the first page. Books was written by engineers for engineers and yes, even if it is strictly technical it has something of specifically German engineering culture that you cannot find in other places. For some reason I always had this picture of clunky Chevrolet and German "ultimate driving machine" in my head while I was reading about methods and people best engineering designs are came from. I know this feeling is irrational, but everything is absolutely rational about this book that tries to rationalize creative process itself and does it exceptionally well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Yawn...
This book probably has some real good technical content. The problem is, I cant get myself to read it. Yeah, most technical engineering books aren't real exciting, but I enjoy them anyway. Most of them I pick up and read in a somewhat cover to cover style, but this book is way to boring. I tried a few times to keep reading, hoping that it would get to part where I might learn some good "Engineering Design" stuff. Unfortunately, I think I have given up on it. Now I have another very expensive shelf weight.

5-0 out of 5 stars The reference book for Systematic Approach to design!
Great, complete and really useful! When I approached this book I had only a vague idea about the argument (plus some understanding about QFD)... but now I can say I have enough knowledge about "Systematic Approach to Design" to apply on the job what I read in this book! No matter if you are a PM or "only" a designer: you should have this book on your desk! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Good beginner overview
I purchased this book as part of an development project for a new ethernet linked product.I was hoping for some detailed insight into industrial implementations.This book provides a good overview of ethernet but does NOT go into enough detail to be useful for a real world project.

5-0 out of 5 stars From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control
An essential reference for anyone working in the flour plant of an automated facility. If you are involved with data communication networks, protocols, communication and networking devices, this book is for you.

I have been working for more than 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation, and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the process industries. I own this book, and it has proven to be an excellent reference in my day to day activities.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the industrial network novice
The authors have created a highly useful book for the automation engineer who has little experience with Ethernet networks. The book is well organized in growing levels of complexity, and filled with details about both Ethernet and Internet protocols usually carried on Ethernet networks. This is a practical book intended for the automation engineer and is not complicated with formulas or mathematical proofs. There is just enough history to let you know where industrial Ethernet came from. They even have capsule coverage of the major automation protocols that run on top of Ethernet.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best just got better!!!!
I reviewed the 1st version of this guide that was released as a pocket guide thought it was great. This version is even better and provides even more info. If you don't have a copy, you should get one. I used the 1st one on a regular basis and now use this edition as my primary reference. Excellent job.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can buy only one book on industrial Ethernet application ...
this should be it.

It is a Rosetta stone of Ethernet jargon translated into conceptsa journeyman field tech can sink their teeth into. One gets the sense Perry Marshall and John Rinaldi have clawed through years of hands-on installation and troubleshooting, and distilled the results into this essential primer.

I'm fairly new to factory-floor Ethernet applications, and was exposed to a lot of useful information - some of it for the first time. In other cases, it cleared up topics I thought I understood, and displaced several misconceptions.

Highly recommended. ... Read more

In 1945 I attended a public technical school in Toronto,Ontario,Canada. The earlier additions of this book were the basis of our four year course at that school. The book is a self teacher and can really teach andinprove the knowledge of anyone involved in the industrial electricalworld.I became a chief electrical engineer for a major company throughthe school of hard knocks.This book always had a place on my desk.Eachtime I went to construction sites and someone would ask about certaintechnical details of the electrical industry I would always end theconversation with a recomendation to purchace this book. 1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money
I've had my share of bad text books, but this one is definitely in the top 2 worst of my college books.To start, the book doesn't really teach anything.It's completely up to you to learn on your own what this book so terribly fails at trying to teach.How am I supposed to learn how to do the math when the chapters are filled with words describing (badly) the circumstances you would use the method (which I'm still really confused about) instead of actually showing how to use it?There are a few examples per chapter, but they are terribly laid out and the problem solving isn't really easy to follow at all.You cannot do the homework problems given the examples (the examples they do are much easier than the HW problems) and mind-numbingly boring array of words preceding them.The only thing this book has taught me about economics is not to waste my money on textbooks again without an in-depth look at what other students say about it. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.DO NOT MAKE YOUR STUDENTS BUY THIS BOOK.It has caused me nothing but frustration in this class... a class which shouldn't be difficult or frustrating in the first place.

1-0 out of 5 stars ??...Few answers...few problems...lots of talking theory
If you want to be able to practically solve engineering economic problems, this book is not for you. If you want to be put to sleep reading after a few pages, this is the one. It is really disappointing that this book was selected for an engineering course. You are left on your own to figure out how to learn most concepts and be able to solve the problems. HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of errors
This book has errors page after page.Poor examples and no answers in the back to see if you can follow the dribble typed out before the practice problems.

Don't purchase.I've used it in two class at two different schools and I still say it is weak!

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor construction
Only took one shot of .45ACP to go from cover to cover once the course was over.Weak.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unacceptable Text
This text is largely a mass of theoretical discussion with very few example problems to illustrate concepts.A large percentage of the problems that are used as examples are hard to follow, and others haveobvious typos. Language is too formal and, at times, condescending.Thistext was required for an undergraduate course in Engineering Economics.Myunderstanding is that this is the first year it was used at my college and,due to large number of complaints, will be the last. ... Product Description
Dieter's Engineering Design 4/e represents a major update of this classic textbook for senior design courses. As in previous editions, Engineering Design provides a broader overview of topics than most design texts and contains much more prescriptive guidance on how to carry out design. Dieter focuses on material selection as well as how to implement the design process.

Engineering Design provides the senior mechanical engineering students with a realistic understanding of the design process. It is written from the viewpoint that design is the central activity of the engineering profession, and it is more concerned with developing attitudes and approaches than in presenting design techniques and tools.

Engineering Design provides a realistic understanding of the engineering design process.The book presents in detail (Chapters 1 through 9) an eight-step process that gives prescriptive guidance to the student from problem definition through detail design.Chapters 10 through 16 present more specific treatment of speciality topics (design for X).The text is intended to be used in either a junior or senior engineering course with an integrated hands-on design project. ... Product Description
A comprehensive guide to a powerful new analytical tool by two of its foremost innovators

The past decade has witnessed many exciting advances in the use of genetic algorithms (GAs) to solve optimization problems in everything from product design to scheduling and client/server networking. Aided by GAs, analysts and designers now routinely evolve solutions to complex combinatorial and multiobjective optimization problems with an ease and rapidity unthinkable withconventional methods. Despite the continued growth and refinement of this powerful analytical tool, there continues to be a lack of up-to-date guides to contemporary GA optimization principles and practices. Written by two of the world's leading experts in the field, this book fills that gap in the literature.

Taking an intuitive approach, Mitsuo Gen and Runwei Cheng employ numerous illustrations and real-world examples to help readers gain a thorough understanding of basic GA concepts-including encoding, adaptation, and genetic optimizations-and to show how GAs can be used to solve an array of constrained, combinatorial, multiobjective, and fuzzy optimization problems. Focusing on problems commonly encountered in industry-especially in manufacturing-Professors Gen and Cheng provide in-depth coverage of advanced GA techniques for:
* Reliability design
* Manufacturing cell design
* Scheduling
* Advanced transportation problems
* Network design and routing

Genetic Algorithms and Engineering Optimization is an indispensable working resource for industrial engineers and designers, as well as systems analysts, operations researchers, and management scientists working in manufacturing and related industries. It also makes an excellent primary or supplementary text for advanced courses in industrial engineering, management science, operations research, computer science, and artificial intelligence. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Shallow and archaic
It's not at all clear who this book is written for.It's probably not very useful to those not familiar with the specialized jargon of the boiler industry.It's certainly of no value to anyone outside the U.S., where modern units are used.The treatments of thermodynamic cycles demonstrate a lack of deep understanding and even interest.Perhaps the best that can be said for it is that the numerous solved problems on heat transfer may be of value to engineers needing similar problems solved in English units, but the treatments may not be easy to apply to slightly different situations. It's really time to just start boycotting books and articles that are not in SI units.-F. David Doty, PhD.

1-0 out of 5 stars A good introductory book ONLY
I purchased this book because of Mr. Ganapathy's fame in the subject area and the attractive title of the book.My primary interest is in waste heat boiler design in petroleum refining applications.My comments here pertains to this area only.

The book gives a very brief survey of various types of boilers and HRSG's and their operations.The chapter on "Heat Transfer Equipment Design and Performance" offers simple published correlations to estimate parameters in boiler and HRSG designs.They are good for rough performance check but I will not use them in actual designs.In fact, I doubted Mr. Ganopathy uses these simple correlations in his own designs.

Mr. Ganapathy, despite his extensive experience in the subject area, did not spend much ink on critical design issues such as the danger of thermal induced dryout and differential thermal expansion of different components and design methodologies to avoid them.

This is a good book for someone who wishes to gain a basic understanding of boilers and HRSG's.It has little value for those who are in the business of actual designing such equipments.

The text was in execllent condition for a used book.Delivery to my daughter's dorm was prompt and she was able to use it on her second day of class.We were able to save almost $60.00 if she had purchase the same text at the campus bookstore.thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars No problems
Ordered this book for a class, received it in a timely manner and in good condition. Would highly recommend to anyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good overall, but lots of errors in the key
This would be a good book if only there weren't so many errors in the key to the exercise problems. I mean, really, there are A LOT of errors. Sometimes if you have an answer that differs from the answer in the key you can't be sure if you really made a mistake or if the answer in the key is incorrect.

3-0 out of 5 stars Logically organized but steep learning curve
This was the prescribed textbook for my statistics course.The book was not my choice, but I thought to myself, stats is stats, so any stats textbook is a good stats textbook.Let me go through the good points first, then I will talk about the issues that bugged me.

From content alone, I think this book is the first book that completely covers the critical aspects of statistics.I have never come across any text that explains the relationship between Type I and Type II errors as detailed and meticulously as this book.Other areas, such as ANOVA and decision making, are also very well covered.It might take a couple readings to fully understand it, but in the end they did the best they could to explain these otherwise very difficult topics.

Since I had to use this book to teach, I did find a number of things that might make it very difficult to get the point across.The first is their treatment of hypothesis testing.Traditionally, students are introduced the concept of confidence intervals before proceeding to hypothesis testing.This book presents confidence interval is a special case of hypothesis testing, so both topics are lumped into one big unit.Though this approach is conceptually sound (and in retrospect I like this way more), it also presents an almost vertical learning curve to the students.I had to go back to the "old" way when I was preparing my lectures.

The other thing that bugged me about this book is that within a single unit, I found some pretty substantial errors.I hope they would get rid of them.There was also a section, where the authors went off tangent on the topic of bias, so that they could insert a ad spot for their other textbooks.Otherwise this particular section was dangling without any sense of closure.

I really want to like this book, because I for one think that the organization of topics make logical sense, but as teaching material, I think the students will not appreciate the steep learning curve that is required for this text.Statistics (for engineering) is one of those courses where the mathematical foundations required to appreciate the concepts are simply beyond the understanding of the average student.The authors tried their best to bring some satisfaction in this department, but still not quite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engineering Review by Halley
My first experience with Shigley's Mechanical Engineering was in college when the book was required for one of my classes.This was back around the 1972 time frame.I kept that book and used it, along with several other colleagues, to the point where the book was falling to pieces.At this point I decided to brake down and buy the latest version which has much more information.If you do any kind of stress analysis work, Shigley's is a must have book.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is not good
This book is very ambiguous and has many wrong answers in the back of the book.For a student that struggles with this topic, it is very misleading and frustrating when the answers provided are wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shigley's !
Haven't gotten too far in the book, but so far, it's a very organized, well written book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Condition
This book is amazing it has everything engineers need to know for Mechanical Systems.It is one of the few engineering books that I will keep forever

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but not a stand-alone text
I purchased this book for my ENGM400:Mechanical Engineering Design class.I gained a lot from that class, but that was LARGELY due to a very experienced professor with excellent presentation abilities.This textbook is filled with useful information, but without a professional to explain how to use many of the concepts presented, it is nearly useless.Until you have been taught the purpose of various tables and charts, and guided through the methods of analyzing many of the problems contained inside, this book will only confuse you.

The book does provide many excellent examples, but unfortunately some of these are severely lacking in explanation, leaving you to puzzle over WHY the authors chose to solve problems the way they did; other problem types are completely missing a corresponding example and are just as confusing.

Obviously, if this textbook is a requirement for your class, reading this review won't persuade you not to buy it. To be honest, I would actually recommend buying it rather than borrowing or leasing, because once you have been instructed in its use it has a ton of helpful information and I have been using it for reference at my place of employment.However, don't expect to pick it up as something to read for knowledge without a course to accompany it. ...
