3-0 out of 5 stars An okay choice.
The way it's set up, plain and packed text; and bw pics, it becomes kind of a dry read but the scientific content is fine.

2-0 out of 5 stars No color, and lacking references in text
No color. This means that histology slides are in gray scale (for example, figure 1, page 10).Therefore, you might want to get a histology atlas as well; this is inconvenient, but perhaps this book may be cheaper than the alternatives at the time of purchase.

Some schematics (e.g. Fig 3, p26) are hard to read because the contrast is low (alpha1 and alpha2 on MHC I).Low contrast issues seem to permeate the entire book (e.g. p337, 327, 303, 290, 216, 171, 160).This means that even if you are color-blind, this book would still present issues.

In addition, the book has too few gray scales. This is apparent when one looks at the patterns that are used to make up for lack of the right shade. They detract from the figures, e.g. p203 Western blot, p99.

The lack of nice figures may be a sign that the author wanted to preserve the original figures from the original journal articles that were influential (as some of the figures are from the 1970s).Or maybe the author didn't have time and had to bring together figures from a lecture powerpoint file.

Another issue: references. The figures are referenced, but the text is not.At the end of each chapter, there is about a page of references, but I don't see where exactly they fit into the text. Therefore, if you want to dig deeper into the evidence, you will be spending a lot of time on Pubmed (or another immunology text).

If I were a patient with an auto-immune disease, I would prefer that my doctor had used a better text. This book is also not for serious students of immunology, since the figures are difficult to appreciate and the text lacks references.Perhaps I have been spoiled by another immunology text that was a tad more colorful.

If you are taking the author's class, then maybe you can borrow this from the library and use another immunology text.If you really need the A then you should buy the book and bring it to office hours every time you have questions.Just avoid questions that are less than flattering of the figures.

If you are a grad student in the author's lab, then you should buy the text and leave it prominently lying about.Write your name prominently on the side of the book, so that your prof knows that it is YOURS (and not that of your fellow lab-mate).Refer to it (and its references) frequently in lab meetings.

It's obvious that the authors spent a lot of time making this book, and I hope that the next edition is better. If colors are too expensive, then maybe a website with color figures might be useful. If this has already been implemented, then this fact should be repeated prominently in the book.

In addition, the authors can improve the figures by using students. You can criticize your grad student's figures on his or her Powerpoint slides, make graduation contingent on good pictures, and then "borrow" those pictures.Make sure you insist on the original figures.Don't try to improve them yourself, for obvious reasons.Give a "summer internship" to a high school student or an undergrad with proven skills in Photoshop.

I think that this book would be okay for an undergraduate "pre-med" immunology class if the general student population is not rich enough to spend money on color texts.I hope to see an improvement in this book, so that it can effectively compete with currently more popular medical immunology texts.I wish the authors the best of luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dense, thourough, and very well done
Admittedly, this is a time-consuming and sometimes difficult book to wade through during a semester long microbiology-immunology course in medical school (the target audience of this book). Also, there is no microbiology here, just immunology. That being said, it is an excellent immunology text and reference and leaves very few stones unturned. As one reviewer said many of the paragraphs are dense but I found very few to be unnecessary or uninformative. If you have the time, this is a very good Immunology text. My only complaint is that there are too few figures and the figures that are there are fairly rudimentary (I guess I've just gotten used to all the high-gloss stuff that almost every other medical text uses now...)

1-0 out of 5 stars Just say no
This book presents material in an unorganized and extremely difficult to understand manner. As a first time student of Microbiology you will need to supplement to this text. The paragraphs are dense. The charts are not helpful and there is failure to clarify many terms. The only redeeming quality of this book is some of the graphics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Invitation to Immunology
This book is enjoyable to go through. The figures seem to be well-done in a number of ways. They are simple enough in color and representation (to facilitate understanding and lower publication costs), but complex enough that important details as well as a certain professional look are preserved. The book is divided into three main sections: fundamentals, lab applications, and clinical information. There are helpful tables and lists. The only downside to this book that I see is the paucity of references. There are references to other books and encyclopedias in the back, but I do not see references to landmark journal articles that demonstrated the "facts" and claims of the text.

In short, this book is good for an introductory class in immunology. It is definitely better than the other immunology book I reviewed a short while ago, if one did not account for differences in price. If you are looking for an immunology reference it may be better to purchase an encyclopedia (some are listed at the back of the book). For graduate students of immunology this book may be too light on the references.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth two cents
This book is horribly unorganized, information is missing, in some places the authors go into great detail, then leave out a single important concept.Information is scattered throughout the book, nothing seems to be were it should be.As a BS MT student, I should have gone elsewhere. If you teach MT/MLT students, do yourself and them a favor, look at other books.

1-0 out of 5 stars I urge you to consider choosing another text for instruction
I have taken well over 200 hours of college course work, most which are in the sciences -- this is by far the worst text book I've ever owned. It's rife with errors and inconsistencies. It has no supplemental resources for the student. The figures and illustrations are often unclear or incorrect; more often than not, they do NOT help the reader understand the concept. The "bold word" notion was obviously lost on the authors. All too often, seemingly "key" words will be in bold, but the authors fail to define them anywhere in the text. The index and glossary are far too limited in breadth and depth. The supplied presentation slides and test questions fail in many of the same ways as the book.

Printing quality can also be called into question. The book has only three colors: black, blue, and white. The detail required to understand what's going on in histology slides and micrographs just isn't there.

IF YOU ARE A PROFESSOR/INSTRUCTOR I URGE YOU CONSIDER OTHER HIGHER QUALITY TEXTS.

Clinical immunology is complicated enough; don't make it worse by supplying students with error-filled, typo-ridden texts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need for USMLE STEP 1 Microbio and Immuno
Very concise presentation, easy to read and understandable. The questions in the back are KEY- do these and you will rock this section of the boards. The best bang for your buck. Look no further.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must buy for USLME
This book is good for the USLME microbiology portion. It gives essential detail of high-yield items. However, I also used:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
(ISBN: 0971999635)
The second book I got on Amazon.com also.I recommend the first book as a great summary to getting to the essential details of microbiology.I advise getting the second book to help prepare for the type of questions to know for the USLME.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete Medical Microbiology Review Book..
'Medical Microbiology and Immunology: Examination and Board review' is more than a good book. The organization and contents of the book are great. Summaries of the most important microorganisms at the end of each section of the book make it excellent for quick reviewing what one has just read. Also, the book includes unique chapters like normal flora, laboratory diagnosis, and vaccines which are really helpful. The immunology section extensively provide a solit understanding of the immune mechanisms, using illustrative figures and mnemonics. Moreover, the MCQs at the end of the book, along with the clinical cases, emphasize on the important areas in medical microbiology.

One more thing I have to complement is the use of bold font in the book; this made skimming chapters quickly before a final microbiology exam a 'stressless' event, and gave confidence.

To be neutral in my review, the book lacks a good mycology section (You need another book for mycology).

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty time-saving

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a complicated disorder characterised by extreme fatigue that doesn't improve with bed rest and may worsen with physical or mental activity. Chronic fatigue syndrome may occur after an infection, such as a cold or viral illness. The onset can also be during or shortly after a time of great stress, or it may come on gradually without a clear starting point or obvious cause. This book discusses new research in CFS, including the effects that CFS may have on immune system responses. The possible implications and prevention of CFS are also explored. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Immunofluorescence, a suitable laboratory method for the microscopic demonstration of antigens and antibodies in biological materials, is useable, for example, to provide evidence for the pathogenesis of disease in histological or cytological preparations and for tumour cell differentiation. For this reason immunofluorescence has a decisive role as the method of choice for the diagnosis of auto-immune diseases. This primer on immunofluorescence techniques, which first appeared in 1979, is a richly illustrated handbook suitable for everyday practical work in the laboratory, useable as both an introduction to the subject as well as an atlas. In hardly any other area of medicine are there so many new findings to report. This book is concerned not only with the detection methods which now form an essential and established part of diagnostic techniques, but also with the most recent research results such as the discovery of antibodies against Auerbach's plexus and against podocytes. The new edition contains many new high-quality colour photomicrographs, as well as detailed descriptions of new antibodies, for example, against Auerbach's plexus, podocytes, and the so-called ANCAs. Considerable attention is paid to diagnostic methods for use with auto-immune diseases. For the first time the material has been presented in the form of a broad overview.

The introduction of modern technical procedures such as confocal laser-scanning-microscopy, or the newer fluorochrome reagents, enable the simultaneous and sensitive detection of a range of substances in a unique way. In the hands of an experienced worker there is no other investigative laboratory method capable of replacing immunofluorescence. ... Read more
