5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This is very well written, as a review guide or just for starting out with a strong foundation.Helpful in medical school for sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
This book is great it makes immunology like its title ridiculously simple. In addition it was a great value for the money. This will be my first stop anytime I am looking for books before i look further.

3-0 out of 5 stars immunology
This is a concise book for beginners in immunology. It has many information which are not necessary to memorize such as cell structure and mode of function.

It lacks the clinical section and correlation with disease. It is very short to be a comprehensive introduction in the area of immunology.

I recommend to the author for future version to delete unnecessry information such as cell structure and mode of action and to concentrate on the clinical information which is the ultimate interest of the medical student.Clinical data should be corroborated with disease. This is not discussed at all.

The book has around 90 pages which is under no circumstances sufficient to give enough details about the subject.

In addition the font should be more bold and increased to font 14. ... Read more

Within this one volume both basic science and clinical immunology are demystified for the medical and other health sciences student. The basic immunological processes are described first, with a level of detail restricted to what is appropriate for medical (and similar) curricula. In the second part of the book, immunological mechanisms behind major diseases of the various body systems are explained. Throughout the text clinical details are highlighted and more in-depth material is differentiated from the main text. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good text book of immunology
I found this a very suitable text for the teaching of entry-level immunology as it is very clearly written and also amply illustrated with excellent graphics and flow diagrams. It has been a very well received settext (adopted since 1999) for the two immunology modules that we teach inour polytechnic diploma course in medical laboratory technology.Mystudents, in particular, very much like the short summaries which are inpoint form for easy revision. One possible drawback is a missing chapteron commonly used techniques in diagnostic immunology - whilst this book isnot intended as a manual of laboratory methods, we would have loved to readabout the various principles & applications, explained in the authors'succinct style, thus making it a comprehensive text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST MEDICAL SCHOOL BOOK THAT I USED.
THIS BOOK MADE ME THE BEST STUDENT IN MY CLASS, TRUST ME IT WAS NOT ME IT WAS THANKS TO THIS BOOK. ITS USER-FRIENDLY FORMAT MAKES BE VERY MOTIVATED AND FOCUS.ITS CONCISE STYLE HELP TO COVER A LOT OF FIELDS IN FEW HOURS AND TRUST ME STILL YEARS LATER YOU REMEMBER WHAT YOU LEARNED. IT GETS TO THE POINT IN A LIGHT WAY.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I used this book primarily during my microbiology course. I did reference it while I studied for Step 1 also. The end of this book that contains "Summary of Medically Important Bacteria/Virus/Fungi/Parasites" is a great resource to have. Get this one early and read it, then reference it as needed for your board prep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Microbiology and Immunology
Warren Levinson is a genius! This book is absolutely brilliant.I would recommend it to almost anybody who doesn't like dumbed down books like Lippincott.Levinson's Microbiology is clear and comprehensive. It tells you exactly what to focus on, and cuts out extraneous details. The immunology section is even better! You'll love this book. The questions are even fantastic in helping you remember all the bugs, and the quick summary reviews at the end make this book worth your while. One recommendation for the next edition is to add more clinically relative laboratory perspectives.Make tables and keep reviewing until the day boards comes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for boards
This book is an excellent source for the boards. It reviews important topics that are important to know and gives you an advantage.I liked the format of the book and it made studying painless and more enjoyable.I also used the following:

Product Description

Malaria is still a major global health problem, killing more than 1 million people every year. Almost all of these deaths are caused by Plasmodium falciparum, one of the four species of malaria parasites infecting humans. This high burden of mortality falls heavily on Sub-Saharan Africa, where over 90% of these deaths are thought to occur, and 5% of children die before the age of 5 years. The death toll from malaria is still growing, with malaria-specific mortality in young African children estimated to have doubled during the last twenty years. This increase has been associated with drug resistance of the parasite, spread of insecticide resistant mosquitoes, poverty, social and political upheaval, and lack of effective vaccines.

This collection of reviews addresses many of these important issues of malarial immunity and immunopathology. They are of interest not only to malariologists, but hopefully also to the broader immunological community. Strong interactions with, and feedback from immunologists working in other infectious diseases and in basic immunology will help us to move the field of malaria immunology and therapeutic intervention forward more quickly.

Product Description
From HIV to influenza, the battle between infectious agents and the immune system is at the heart of disease. Knowledge of how and why parasites vary to escape recognition by the immune system is central to vaccine design, the control of epidemics, and our fundamental understanding of parasite ecology and evolution. As the first comprehensive synthesis of parasite variation at the molecular, population, and evolutionary levels, this book is essential reading for students and researchers throughout biology and biomedicine.

The author uses an evolutionary perspective to meld the terms and findings of molecular biology, immunology, pathogen biology, and population dynamics. This multidisciplinary approach offers newcomers a readable introduction while giving specialists an invaluable guide to allied subjects. Every aspect of the immune response is presented in the functional context of parasite recognition and defense--an emphasis that gives structure to a tremendous amount of data and brings into sharp focus the great complexity of immunology. The problems that end each chapter set the challenge for future research, and the text includes extensive discussion of HIV, influenza, foot-and-mouth disease, and many other pathogens.

This is the only book that treats in an integrated way all factors affecting variation in infectious disease. It is a superb teaching tool and a rich source of ideas for new and experienced researchers. For molecular biologists, immunologists, and evolutionary biologists, this book provides new insight into infectious agents, immunity, and the evolution of infectious disease. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I really like this book. It presents a wonderfully concise set of well written examples, with key literature cites. Some very interesting problems that illuminate the complexity.

Minor erratum on page 117. States that sum of squares of the two alleles is the incidence of the combined. Correctly, when squaring both sides it is:
(p+q)^2 = 1^2

p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1

2pq = 1- p^2 - q^2
pq = (1 - p^2 - q^2)/2

So properly speaking, it is one-half of 1 - sum of the 2 squares for the simple case of 2 alleles.i.e. about 27%

But, that is a minor technical error that is common to make. The book is very good and does an excellent job of bridging the gap between introductory material and advanced research questions. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too confusing
The immunology section of this book is the most convoluted reading I have had in all my readings for the step 1.Frankly, the figures are far superior in explaining what the author is trying to convey.Maybe this book was helpful for others but it just frustrated me and did not expand any more than what was already more concisely described in first aid.Bottom line, not worth the time.

4-0 out of 5 stars execllent
the immunlogy section is extra ordinary with concise yet comprehensive ! itsimplified not only for usmle but also for medical carrier, so it should study first before the other topics.
I think the book needs more thorough answers for usmle questions as most of us purchase for usmle reviews not for text !

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost excellent
I love this book but the reason i gave this book 4 stars is just because they didn't bother to correct some mistakes of the seventh edition. In this edition (eighth), on page 41 (Chapter 7) Botton note says: Pseudomonas aeruginosa {endotoxin} has the same mode of action. Refering to Diphtheria toxin. It should be {exotoxin}. Another example (to show you a few) is in the same chapter on page 43 table 7-13, it says:
Nervous system
Gram-positive rods:
Clostridium tetani>>>>inhibit acetylcholine release
Clostridium botulinum>>>>inhibit glycine release
As you can see they are mismatched.
So this book is almost perfect, excellent contents but with a few mistakes in some concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Currently the best Micro Review Book
Yes folks, this is better than Made Rediculously Simple. Well, let me rephrase that. I like this book a lot better. Now dont get me wrong, MRS is a good book and I use both, but if I could only choose one, I would go with this one.

First of all, it just came out this summer. So it does have some recent updates that MRS doesnt have, particularily with the antibiotics. I also think it offers better clinical scenarios and presentations of the various bugs. It is in depth with what you need to know, yet concise at the same time. Ive used it for class, and for board prep. Another thing, is that it doesnt have those silly mnemonics that can often be very far fetched and cumbersome. And yet one more thing, but may sound silly, is that I like the font and layout better. It makes more judicious use of tables as well to drive home key points.

And the best of all, is that it has over 600 USMLE style questions. I thought for the most part, they were indicative of what you will see on the real thing. Last but not least, it also has a great section devoted to medical immunology, so no need to buy another separate book.

So if you have money to get both, do it. But if you are trying to choose between the two, I say get this one. The LANGE Pharm and Board review book is good too. Good luck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars readable, memorable
Uses text and pictorals to convey similar points.Brief chapters will actually be read. Not comprehensive, but appendices are good, lacks technique section.Abbas's former associates are in some controvery right now, over FACS published.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reader
The text has excellent pictures and does a good job of relating components of the immune system. Its brief text, excellent pictures and summaries work well for medically oriented students who are trying gain a big picture of how the immune system works.Highlighting allows students to identify the most important component in each paragraph/page.It might not be as good of a textbook for an undergraduate course or a graduate course as it doesn't follow the traditional lecture format.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best used for cramming!
I was required to buy this book for my 3rd year immunology course, but had heard great things about Janeways Immunobiology so bought that as well. Well, i was really glad i did because, with the exception of Abbas' graphics, especially the cell-cell interactions, Janeways book is significantly better. The language used in this book is rushed and confusing that resulted in me, more times than not, reaching for the trusted Janeway (which I now dubb 'The Bible'). I would only recommend Abbas's Basic immunology for those who need to cram for an exam in a very short time. For all else, if you really like immunology and like Abbas' way with his pictures, 'Cellular and Molecular Immunology' also by Abbas would be better, or even better Janeways 'Immunobiology'.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too wordy to understand
This book has great information in it BUT it is so poorly organized and written that a reader can't absorb it.The book is so repetitive and wordy that the key points are often obscured. The diagrams are the saving grace of the book -- these are well-drawn and easy to understand.I resorted to looking at the diagrams and reading the chapter intros and summaries to try and get what I needed out of the book. However, that wasn't enough and I got so frustrated with an immuno final exam looming that I purchased another book. I recommend looking elsewhere especially if you are new to immunology. ... Hi it was nice experience overall.

Thanks for being prompt in sending.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real gem
People often make the mistake of hitting the bigger books with the hope that they will gain a more complete understanding of a subject. However the problem with such an approach (particularly when beginning a subject) is that more often than not, one loses sight of the key concepts and broad principles. This where i feel this book is a gem. The strength of this book is that each chapter succinctly provides you with all the main points you need to know about each subtopic. In this way you are given a solid basis and contextual understanding, enabling you to gain a deeper appreciation of immunology from larger texts.
At the start of each immunol topic in your course, read the corresponding chapter in this book first, then use your lecture notes or larger texts to fill the gaps/details.

This happens to be one of a very few review books i've kept in my extensive library.

Product Description
Immunology is the study of all aspects of the host defence against infection challenge, including the adverse consequences of such defence mechanisms. It is a broad ranging discipline that touches almost all aspects of human health and well-being.

'Immunology: Essential and Fundamental 3E' is the new edition of a text that teaches the ideas and concepts of immunology as well as the facts and the detail. It encourages students to question the obvious and explore the implications of the material they learn.

This new edition is now in full colour throughout, and maintains its pedagogic impact: sidebars present real-life applications, clinicial uses or research material for the interested reader; metaphors and song lyrics link the content to popular culture and daily life, thus enabling the student to think beyond the course parameters and about the overall importance of immunology; and the wide margins, boxes, tables and diagrams ensure that the format is attractive and easy to read.

For the first time 'Immunology: Essential and Fundamental 3E' will have a companion website to offer additional information and to enhance the understanding of the subject. The reader of this book will appreciate the knowledge gained from it, and also the pleasure enjoyed whilst doing the reading.

2-0 out of 5 stars too much information.
Pharmacology is tested more often on step 1 than immunology, however, the same book "road map pharmacology" actually has less pages than this book. This book definitely has too much information. Maybe it is good for the actual class, it is certainly not a good book for step 1 review.

I was going to rate it a 3. "apoptosis" rated it a 5, therefore, I had to rate this book a 2. I also have read the high yield immunology. At least that book is managable, you will go crazy if you want to study this book. It has listed some diseases which are not even mentioned on the brs pathology book, for example, do you know about the Job's symdrome or "systemic inflammatory response syndrome," selective IGG2 deficiency, selective IGA deficiency, etc. It has way too much detailed information. I bet, not even the author himself can remember everything he wrote in that book.

Immunology is not a highly tested subject on USMLE. Even if you spend time reading this book from the first page till the last, there is no way that you will be able to remember everything in this book. For people who are preparing for step 1, there is no way that you can allocate a large part of study time just to study this book. There are many more important books that you want to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick, organized - high yield
Perfect for the KUMC Immunology course, a must have for any medical student

5-0 out of 5 stars "Too much" is better than "not enough"!
I guess I have to write a new review on this book, as my answer to Preppy Jock.
First of all, I'd say, that too much info is always better than not enough, especially, if someone has managed to put all this info in a concise and readable way.
Comparing different books from the same series only by their page numbers isn't the very helpful method to judge about their quality - these books may be at the different level of reviewing - what is "Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology" or "Katzung and Trevor's Review of Pharmacology" (NOT "USMLE Road Map: Pharmacology"!) for pharmacology, the same is "USMLE Road Map: Immunology" for immunology - read my amazon review about "USMLE Road Map: Pharmacology", 2nd ed. and you'll understand what do I mean.
224 pages long review of immunology couldn't "make you crazy, because it's too detailed" - your only complaint is that you can find all the aspects of immunology in this tiny book, but this just means that the author has done an excellent job - you'll be able to answer every question about immunology on your step 1 exam, even the most difficult one!
Also, who said that "BRS Pathology" is the standard for the USMLE step 1 and only those diseases, which are mentioned in that book will be tested on the actual exam?
You may feel more comfortable reading "High-Yield Immunology" - that book is oversimplified and so, you'll be reading mostly the stuff you already know - you wouldn't need much effort, but I guess, this wouldn't make your performance on the USMLE step 1 better. ... Read more

"This is a very comprehensive book, and would serve postgraduates well in addition to students embarking on pathology…It is well written by people who know their subject well, and know what information it is important to convey…All the vital areas you might want to read up on are covered more than adequately."

5-0 out of 5 stars Really nice clinical immunology book
Its not a big book, but gives you almost everything a clinician should know about the immunology behind a condition or a disease. I love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book knows its stuff
I bought this book wanting to study undergraduate immunology before I took the upcoming class. This book, however, is definitely not for beginners. It assumes you know certain terminology going into it.Regularly, you will stumble upon bold words like "low-affinity Fc(gamma)RIII receptors" with little explanation. There is a great deal of knowledge in this book.If you have your basic background, then I would recommend this book.During/After the class, I expect this book to be more helpful. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars An okay choice.
The way it's set up, plain and packed text; and bw pics, it becomes kind of a dry read but the scientific content is fine.

2-0 out of 5 stars No color, and lacking references in text
No color. This means that histology slides are in gray scale (for example, figure 1, page 10).Therefore, you might want to get a histology atlas as well; this is inconvenient, but perhaps this book may be cheaper than the alternatives at the time of purchase.

Some schematics (e.g. Fig 3, p26) are hard to read because the contrast is low (alpha1 and alpha2 on MHC I).Low contrast issues seem to permeate the entire book (e.g. p337, 327, 303, 290, 216, 171, 160).This means that even if you are color-blind, this book would still present issues.

In addition, the book has too few gray scales. This is apparent when one looks at the patterns that are used to make up for lack of the right shade. They detract from the figures, e.g. p203 Western blot, p99.

The lack of nice figures may be a sign that the author wanted to preserve the original figures from the original journal articles that were influential (as some of the figures are from the 1970s).Or maybe the author didn't have time and had to bring together figures from a lecture powerpoint file.

Another issue: references. The figures are referenced, but the text is not.At the end of each chapter, there is about a page of references, but I don't see where exactly they fit into the text. Therefore, if you want to dig deeper into the evidence, you will be spending a lot of time on Pubmed (or another immunology text).

If I were a patient with an auto-immune disease, I would prefer that my doctor had used a better text. This book is also not for serious students of immunology, since the figures are difficult to appreciate and the text lacks references.Perhaps I have been spoiled by another immunology text that was a tad more colorful.

If you are taking the author's class, then maybe you can borrow this from the library and use another immunology text.If you really need the A then you should buy the book and bring it to office hours every time you have questions.Just avoid questions that are less than flattering of the figures.

If you are a grad student in the author's lab, then you should buy the text and leave it prominently lying about.Write your name prominently on the side of the book, so that your prof knows that it is YOURS (and not that of your fellow lab-mate).Refer to it (and its references) frequently in lab meetings.

It's obvious that the authors spent a lot of time making this book, and I hope that the next edition is better. If colors are too expensive, then maybe a website with color figures might be useful. If this has already been implemented, then this fact should be repeated prominently in the book.

In addition, the authors can improve the figures by using students. You can criticize your grad student's figures on his or her Powerpoint slides, make graduation contingent on good pictures, and then "borrow" those pictures.Make sure you insist on the original figures.Don't try to improve them yourself, for obvious reasons.Give a "summer internship" to a high school student or an undergrad with proven skills in Photoshop.

I think that this book would be okay for an undergraduate "pre-med" immunology class if the general student population is not rich enough to spend money on color texts.I hope to see an improvement in this book, so that it can effectively compete with currently more popular medical immunology texts.I wish the authors the best of luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dense, thourough, and very well done
Admittedly, this is a time-consuming and sometimes difficult book to wade through during a semester long microbiology-immunology course in medical school (the target audience of this book). Also, there is no microbiology here, just immunology. That being said, it is an excellent immunology text and reference and leaves very few stones unturned. As one reviewer said many of the paragraphs are dense but I found very few to be unnecessary or uninformative. If you have the time, this is a very good Immunology text. My only complaint is that there are too few figures and the figures that are there are fairly rudimentary (I guess I've just gotten used to all the high-gloss stuff that almost every other medical text uses now...)

1-0 out of 5 stars Just say no
This book presents material in an unorganized and extremely difficult to understand manner. As a first time student of Microbiology you will need to supplement to this text. The paragraphs are dense. The charts are not helpful and there is failure to clarify many terms. The only redeeming quality of this book is some of the graphics. ... Read more
