2-0 out of 5 stars Meh
The book is good in that it explains certain basic immunological techniques quite well in a descriptive sense (at least at the molecular leve), however graphically many things are left to be desired. Many topics like explaining detailed immunofluorescent or protein immunology, etc are woefully inadequate for any practical use.The first third of the book explaining immunological processes is hopeless and best left to a dedicated immunology textbook like Janeway or Abbas.

1-0 out of 5 stars Clear as mud.
This book couldn't decide what it wanted to be.There were sections that were very detailed and not clearly explained. On the other hand, there were sections that were lacking significant explanation and contained so little detail that it was impossible to understand.

Also, if I had to read 'close proximity' one more time, I would have screamed.Someone should explain to the author AND THE EDITOR that this is redundant.I circled those words MULTIPLE times.Reading such a poorly written book made me wonder what else was poorly described and possible incorrect. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview book
This book is required for my immunology course, and is a very good, easy-to-understand description of the immune system. It also has much shorter chapters than in most of my other textbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Immunology book
This book was the suggested text for my Veterinary Immunology class and overal I was very pleased with it.I probably spent a little more time sleeping in class than I should and as a result relied heavily on this book to learn the material.I was pleasantly as the book was a fairly easy read. The material was presented clearly and in a logical order that made it fairly easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get started learning immunology
I never learned any immunology; never took a course in it, or read the textbook, just picked up what I picked up by reading peripheral journal articles. If you are like me, then buy this short book and read it cover to cover and study the pictures and you'll be amazed how much of your scattered knowledge of immunology will get pulled together. You won't want to admit to yourself how fuzzy your grasp of lots of things about the immune system is/was.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful.....
I enjoyed "Metabolism at a glance" immensely. So, I purchased this thinking it'd help me as well. This is a very poor book. For an example, for the complement system the index states that page 7 has information on this topic. However, page 7 is titled "How to use this book".Of the 4 times I've tried to use the index I was directed to a page that had nothing to do with what I was looking for. Each topic is devoted 2 pages, left and right of the open book form. The right page simply has definitions related to the topic.Left page has an illustration for the topic. But, I have yet to find clear explanation for any of the topic I wanted to learn. The cartoon illustrations are a bit too complicated and this confusion is compounded by the text saying things like "note the central role of such and such.....in the illustration" when the illustration is a bit too complex with too many arrows.I'd not buy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice diagrams
diagrams are so unique that we may not catch the meaning at first. but they are very nice & well intergrated. SO impressive!
but discreted explanation is the one of draw backs. if a reader has some immunolgical back ground, this book will be good to catch complexed immune network. But no recomendation for preparing USMLE or board.

5-0 out of 5 stars simply excellent
This is complex stuff, and I don't think it could be made any more simple and clear than it is in this book."At a Glance" does *not* mean that you'll be able to start with zero knowledge of immunology and comeaway an expert after glancing at this book.It means that it's all hereand that each topic is fully covered in the space of two pages.Hence, byjust glancing down at the open book you will see an entire survey of, say,"Acute inflammation".There are 41 such topics in all, groupedinto several categories:natural immunity, adaptive immunity, potentiallyuseful immunity, undesirable effects of immunity, and altered immunity.

The drawings are, as the author hints in the Preface, worth a millionwords or so (apiece). Because any given immune activity involves so manydifferent cells, parts of cells, or molecules, the topic is far betterunderstood through sketches of how the parts interact than through wordsalone. The sketches here are EXCELLENT -- clear, complete, well labeled...In short, just what any student wants. The material is right there infront of you for the pondering.

Each sketch is accompanied by a fewparagraphs of text and a list of terms defined.

Here is what the authorstates in a section titled "How to use this book":

"Eachof the figures... represents a particular topic, corresponding roughly to a45-minute lecture.Newcomers to the subject may like first to read throughthe text (left-hand pages) using the figures only as a guide....Once thegeneral outline has been grasped, it is probably better to concentrate onthe figures one at a time" (p.7).

A list of relevant textbooks, which provided some source material for this book, is provided.

Veryhighly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best problem based book for immunology
It basically explains the relavent subject before actually talking about the problem. And the answers to the problems are explained well. Every immunologist should have this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, Very well organized
The book is organized into sections such as autoimmunity and immunization and within those sections there are clinical cases. Each clinical case is dealt with in detail.Clinical cases make the book more medically oriented and help retain the information. There are multiple choice problems at the end of the book for each section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning for all levels in immunology - from novice to advanced!
As an allergy/immunology fellow trying to digest all the information in Abbas and Janeway as it pertains to my patients clinically, I needed a source that helped my brain put it all together.I first noticed this book in my university bookstore and, my burgeoning collection of books be damned, decided to give it a look.I very quickly realized this would be an instrumental book in my learning about clinical issues in immunology, particularly the immunodeficiencies. From the big hitters like SCID to the minutia of innate immunity like TLR4 deficiency - it's all there - and presented in a concise, interesting case-based approach, with beautiful multi-color photographs and diagrams. After looking the book over, other fellows in my program have also purchased this book.I use this book regularly when I want to better understand and synthesize the material I am reading in my Abbas textbook.

My complaints with this book are minor. For one, as the previous reviewer said, it's a first-and-only 2006 edition so far.(Not a problem just yet, though.)Second, each case presentation is followed up with "Group Discussion" questions, which are supposed to stimulate thoughts about the case. The problem is, these questions many times give away the etiology of the case, which ruins the suspense! Finally, the pages themselves are slightly thin, so heavy highlighting (guilty as charged) will tend to bleed through the pages a little, but not much.Again, these are all very minor complaints.

Other than that, I highly, highly recommend this book.If you are a med student, resident, fellow, or even attending seeking a great case-based approach to better learning/solidifying your clinical knowledge of immunology, this is your book.I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for Clinical Immunology..
This book is a wonderful tool for Medical Immunology. My second year course at medical school runs only two weeks and there are so many informations and so many concepts to digest. At the beginning I was very skeptical about buying the book because its a very new book( first and only edition, from 2006) and there is no written review as I am the first person to writte this review on Amazon. It first start by discussing every necessary information to understand each concept then it move over to talk about clinical cases related to each concept. It also go to the very bottom of each condition and speculate concisely on the informations necessary we need to understand. For exemple ADA deficiency is a subtype of the wide range of SCIDs and in our notes there are no much infos about ADA and you really need to go back to the biochem notes to clearly understand the mechanism of ADA which will be very hard to do w/in two weeks. And the authors clearly break down the facts about ADA by stating on page 10 w/in a very short paragraph that "..ADA is required for purines metabolism and which is more active in lymphocytes, particularly T lymphocytes. In the absence of this enzyme, toxic metabolites accumulate and inhibit DNA synthesis so proliferation does not occur in response to polyclonal activators". They first save me a trip to last year biochem notes which are accross my table on the living room then, they break down why exactly ADA deficiency inhibit polyclonal activation. Great book I would recommend to any medical student for the Immuno class. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressed
I bought this as a supplement to my Microbiology class and the textbook that was required for the class. This book definitely clarifies things and conveniently organizes the material well. I read this and reference this more than my GIANT textbook! I am very satisfied with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!
Put it this way. I finished med-school, Internal Medicine residency and have been a hospitalist for three years. I'm going back to training in Infectious Diseases for a fellowship. I have been through bunch of books in my life and can say that this one is a darn good review of Microbiology. The proper topics have in depth review, but it is not too meticulous that you would get lost in bench research type topics. I'm certainly speaking from a clinicians perspective with ID intentions, but in general I have quite an interest in microbiology. I generally recommend it for sure. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
This purchase is very smoothly and the quality of the book is pretty good! Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Microbiology and Immunology Book
I bought this book for my microbiology course and for review for the boards. Before this book, I read Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple. While Ridiculous was an entertaining read, but the silliness kinda got in the way of information and the explanations were generally lacking. This book is well organized and the depth is great.I finally figured out what the A and B subunits on the cholera exotoxin are and the fact that that mechanism is not exclusive to cholera. The immunology chapters in the book are equally as good.Ever have any questions about complement or hypersensitivities?Well there is a chapter dedicated to each (albeit, only 3-5 pages). Finally the appendix is very high yield. There are charts that organize organisms by geographic region, foods for food poisoning, animals, and vectors. There is also a section that has a quick review of all the organisms covered in the book. There's a lot of information, so it might take longer to get through than a rapid review book, but started earlier it should be high yield.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is
This is a very good medical micro book for someone who needs a reasonable complete and accessible reference. It's not a definitive micro book. It's not "Clinical Microbiology made ridiculously simple" either.I find micro really painful as a general rule.I'd never sit down and read this book from cover to cover. That said when I need to know about a particular bug this book generally tells me everything I'd want to know in an organized and understandable fashion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my grade
This book saved my grade. My professor was using the Kuby book (written from a researcher's point of view) to teach our Immunology class. It made no sense to me.
Then I bought this book (written from a medical provider's point of view) and suddenly everything made sense. The material was exactly the same as we were studying in class, but simply explained better. I kept this book after the class because it's such an awesome reference. I also met Dr. Narin as he guest-lectured some of our classes. He's an awesome guy, and it's no wonder his book is so easy to understand.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacking in detail
Immunology for Medical Students is a good overall resource but leaves you a little fuzzy about detail and scope.Overarching principles are presented clearly, but the text doesn't elaborate enough on important specifics such as VDJ recombination in lymphocytes and cytokine function. This text is insufficient for the current medical school course I am taking and wouldn't even have been adequate for the undergraduate immunology course I took a few years ago.Janeway's Immunobiology gives you a much better understanding of the topics, though it does probably go too far to the other side in providing detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent immunology book for medical students
The book is concise and easy to follow. It contains a lot of background information, in format of inserted boxes, on diseases related to the immune system. The information about immunology is NOT thorough with details. Neither is the presentation of (immuno)pathology. But should be adequate for medical students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
I bought this book for first year dental. It does a good job explaining basic concepts. There are nice, detailed pictures throughout and is very "readable".This is a small book (about 1.5" thick) and gives a good foundation for understanding immunology.I can't, however, agree with the "for Medical Students" portion of the title. If you're looking for something more detailed, check out Robbins. ... By its nature, the depth of information is limited but now I have a goodfoundation to learn more in greater depth from other sources. The indexwas not quite as comprehensive as I would have liked, but the book is shortenough to easily find what you need. For immunology novices, I highlyrecommend reading this book before delving into a detailed textbook. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
This is a HUGE and generally very comprehensive book except there are only two mentions of ME (CFS) en passant. (I do have to give props for those phrases being correct though) ME is a common (1M+ in US) and extremely debilitating NeuroEndocrine Immune Disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than fundamental
This is, undoubtdly, the most complete guide for immunology. It shows all aspects of the issue, including biochemistry and disease context. Futhermore, the interaction between innate response and adaptive response is aborded, once is rarely showed by the other books. I do recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
If you have lot of time to read, yes, this book is a MUST. But if you have 40 exams plus practices plus meetings plus, plus, plus.....Kuby is a good option. Anyway, never trust only in a single book.

2-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE CD UPGRADE

No offense to William Paul and the Authors of this book, but the CD is unusable unless you allow it access to the internet to review your searches!!!! (In either Windows ME or Windows XP)

    A complete invasion of privacy.

Fundamental Immunology IV did not have that problem!

(Microsoft Word is having new problems like this with their Windows XP professional as well!It did not have those problems with ME - Hum?)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This is an excellent book on the subject. The only catch for me is that, if you are abolutely new to immunology, this book might be a little confusing at first. You have to be able to understand some basic terminology to work with this book, once you have it going through the book is absolutely pain free.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not touch this book!
The text is confusing, very baddly structured and hard to read. Because of the many different authors, the text is not concise. The diagrams and tables are often unprecise, leaving you with even more questions instead of answers. The book is a absolutely not the wright choice for learning immunology. For that I recomend Alberts: MBOC (immunology chapters) and Abbas 5th ed., which are much better books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immunology by Ivan Roitt - Still the best!
I used an earlier edition of this text to study for Pathology board examinations (with the American College of Veterinary Pathology), and found it readily understandable (for someone with a veterinary degree and Master's degree in pathology) and well-laid out. I was so pleased that I purchased this recently for an associate starting a Ph.D. The text has chapters covering general immunology, evolution of the immune system, species differences, and essentials for understanding most aspects of immunology, from cytokines to cells to roles in infectious disease and cancer. The new edition incorporates recent information while retaining the basic flow. Altogether, this is still the best text on the subject that I have seen! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE!!
I purchased this book a few months ago for the course I am taking. The book is well written and provides a wealth of information.
HOWEVER, BEWARE!!This book does NOT come with ANY type of internet or computer support of ANY kind!!!There is no CD with the book, no supporting website, etc. So if you have even the simplest of questions that you would rather not bother your professor with (or have at 2 am when you seem to be alone), there is nothing to help you with this.
Like I said, the book is wonderful but the Author and/or publishing company needs to get with the 21st Century as well as with "Today's Student".

2-0 out of 5 stars Klaus must update or perish
Just a quick note: Dr. Elgert's text is 10 years old.. 10!That's before the human genome came out, and what's more, the book is hopelessly outdated on a number of points.First of all, a lot of good science has been put out in the 10 years since its publication. Second, his illustrations look like their were made in MSPaint (and they very well may have been). Moreover, he reprintedhis old edition at some point, but in black and white, and on rough, heavier paper.Buyer beware - the cover is identical.

LUCKILY.. if you don't go to Virginia Tech, I'm sure you're not in danger of exposure to this opaque anachronism of a textbook...

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Easy to read

4-0 out of 5 stars A review of Immuno. A little hard for newbies in the subject
I bought this book because it was needed in my course. But if you are new to the COMPLEX world of Immunology, then beware! If you want to get the full use of the depth of this book, first read the subject in THE GREATEST BOOK FOR NEWBIES in Immunology, I mean by "IMMUNOBIOLOGY" by Charles Janeway. Then you can skip to Parslow-Stites and be prepared for the test. If you already have concepts in this subject, then go for it, you will not be dissapointed.

Stites manages to explain a really complicated subject with simplicity. Enjoyful to read and easy to learn from. ... Read more
