5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommended
very informative, comprehensive book. figures are explaining many things even though you dont read the text. i recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, way to detailed for med school
This book was required for my medical school immunology course. Our professor assigned the book to read in about a week and a half, rediculous! Few people read it. I used it as a reference source. To learn the material on a first pass, I recommend Review of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Tenth Edition (LANGE Basic Science) and I'm sure the new edition would be even better. Even Lange will only get you started, as it leaves out a lot of detail and leaves some questions unanswered.

In summary, use Lange to get a good USMLE high-yield baseline then either hope you have a good professor to teach the material ( like I had) or dig through this book to answer any burning questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classical text in molecular immunology
I am familiar with this textbook since the 3rd edition. I consider this textbook one of the leading (if not the best) for the field of molecular immunology. The organization and structure of chapters differs from those in, for example, Janeway's Immunobiology, but this falls into personal preference and needs. This book is food for undergraduates, graduates and professionals who want to learn immunology from more biological and less clinical perspective. I work in cancer research, however I use this book frequently - it is very useful to get info related to different aspects of cancer research: immunotherapy, immunobiology of tumors, tumor microenvironment, etc. In addition, this textbook is one of the most affordable books. After bying the book, one can use the book's website, where it is possible, for example, to download images, which is very practical for presentations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A most readable and yet comprehensive book
This text is appropriate both for the novice and for the reader who is educated in the field but wants an update. The writing flows beautifully. The authors do an excellent job of identifying the most fundamental concepts and organizing the text around those basic concepts, yet there is a remarkable amount of detail.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good text book
Has the plusses and minuses you'd expect from an immunology text.Covers the field, well indexed, illustrations are consistent and helpful. But Immunology is too big for a textbook to double as a handbook. The present edition is noticeably drier than the previous one because examples and sidelights have been reduced to fit the new material into a constant number of pages. ... it was the book and used. a little bent and worn. butstill the book and intact

5-0 out of 5 stars Immuno-freakin-ology
Buy the newer edition cause it is updated. There are a few things missing from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Speedy service
Book came very quickly in great shape exactly as described on the website.I would order another book from them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing Book
This book is written from a researchers point of view. It thoroughly describes how and why a "insert concept" was discovered and why it's important.
However, no test you will ever take will ask you any of that information. To read this book, you're required to dig through the text and hunt for important facts. The authors go off on too many tangents.

I purchased this book instead, Immunology for Medical Students: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Accessand highly recommend it. It's written from a medical provider's point of view. So all the unnecessary information is cut out.
You are left with only key concepts and chapters that are no more than 10 pages long.

If you're required to buy the Kuby for class, I still recommend buying the Immuno for Med. Students as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a first year medical student
This book is a great tool for a first year medical student learning Immunology. The figures provide a clear explanation for all the different aspects of innate and adaptive immunity. However, the book is not very detailed as I would have liked but def gives you all the main points necessary for most classes and board exams. Def recommend esp for the low price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and fun introduction to Immunology
Though I have had a module on Immunology as a part of Biochemistry in medical school, my essential knowledge of Immunology had all but flown out the window when I picked up this book. It was an excellent re-introduction to the subject.

The text was simple and clear. I whizzed through the entire book in a week and was able to retain a vast number of important concepts because of the book's amusing and colourful diagrams. The accompanying explanations were lucid and easy to understand. The book makes very few assumptions about the reader's prior experience with Immunology. Jargon, when used, is amply explained and illustrated. Though its labeled a review, I used it as a textbook. It's a nice starting point for someone with little or no exposure to Immunology.

Thus, I would highly recommend Lippincott's Illustrated Review in Immunology
a) as an introductory/basic text.
b) to anyone looking for a fun but good introduction to Immunology
c) to clinicians who want an essential grasp of the subject but have very little time or energy.
d) as a starting point for generating interesting ideas in interdisciplinary research involving Immunology for researchers whose primary field of research is not Immunology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great review of the basics
I am a trained / board-certified pediatrican, and like most doctors have found that residency and practice have distanced me from the basics. I've enjoyed reviewing these "1st year" texts to help provide a more solid foundation for my clinical practice. Great review, very nice illustrations, succinct.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good immuno REVIEW (not a text)
Well written and with concise diagrams. Does a nice job of covering the pertinent material without going into so much detail you lose the forest for the trees. I'd have given it 5 stars if there were a comprehensive test at the end, but even as-is I'd buy it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lippincott's Did It Again
I ordered this book as soon as i heard about it, i really needed a good immunology book since our doctor didn't explain it well. It is a great book with nice diagrams and loads of questions at the end of each chapter.
This book made immunology much easier for me, i strongly recommend it for any med. student. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars just what i asked for
book came quickly and in the condition specified when i ordered it; could not ask for more

5-0 out of 5 stars Case Studies in Immunology: A Clinical Companion (Geha, Case Studies in Immunology: A Clinical Companion)
It was in excellent condition even with the few underlined sections or highlighted parts, in my opinion those only make text books more valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a second pass at immunology
My use of this book is probably a little different from most of the other reviewers here.My medical school immunology course used a different book (Lippincott's Immunology, which is passable); a year later, while studying for my USMLE step 1, I didn't want to waste time re-reading the basics in a textbook (i.e. I didn't need to read a 20-page chapter about the difference between innate and adaptive immunity).I also wasn't satisfied with the level of detail in my review books, which were fine for physiology but very weak in describing genetic immunodeficiency syndromes.

That's the benefit of this book-- the basics are there, but are integrated into cases alongside more "advanced" concepts. If you already have a good grasp on basic immunology (adaptive vs. innate, B vs. T, CD4 vs. CD8, Th1 vs. Th2), this is a much easier way to learn the complexities of immunodeficiency syndromes or autoimmune diseases (most of the cases in this book are one or the other). As such, I would definitely recommend using this book for a boards review of immunology (if you can spare a day or two from your review schedule to read it-- it's about 300 pages). It covers ALL the relevant immunology-- I can't imagine being surprised by an immuno question on test day if you know what's in here.

That said, I would NOT recommend this book as a starting point for learning immunology (and based on some of the other reviews here, that is unfortunately how it has occasionally been used). This was never meant to be a stand-alone immunology text, and I honestly can't imagine why it would be assigned as the text for an undergraduate introductory course. There are several good introductory immunology books out there-- the one I used is Sompayrac's "How the Immune System Works," but you have lots of choices.Once you have the basics, though, this book is excellent for making the jump to clinical immunology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Companion text for any immunology course
Great Companion text for any immunology course.Shows clinically relevant cases and exemplifies how and why certain themes apply to medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Case Studies in Immunology

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best microbiology review book
This book is great. It covers everything you need to know for step 1, while leaving out all you dont' need to know. The questions are probably the best micro vignette questions out there, and helps reinforce what you learned from the book.
This book is much better than micro made ridiculously simple in terms of boards review. Its written in outline format so you can get through it much faster, and it includes an immunology section that has all you need to know for the immunology questions on the step.

The only thing I don't like is the Rapid Review format. At times the outline format should be written in complete sentences (like the high-yield series) to avoid confusing statments/facts. For me, this seemed especially true in theimmunology section, which can be confusing if you have a weak immuno background.

Other than that, this is a great review book. The only review book for micro in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Microbiology and Immunology
Perfect for medical microbio class. I used Micro Made easy for class, and after reading this book to review for the boards I would definately recommend it over Micro made easy. The organization is better, it's a shorter text, has an outline format, has excellent tables that while are not as detailed as the micro made easy book are a lot easier to read, and it has everything you need to know for class, which micro made easy does not.

Immuno section is a bit brief but it has all the essentials. I would also recommend reading Immunobiology by Janeway and Medical Microbiology by Murray. Both texts are outstanding and really help you appreciate the subjects. ... Read more

Product Description
Immunology: A Short Course, Sixth Edition introduces all the critical topics of modern immunology in clear and succinct yet comprehensive fashion. The authors offer a uniquely balanced coverage of classical and contemporary approaches, basic and clinical aspects. As with the previous editions, the strength of the text is in a complete review of modern immunology without burdening the reader with excessive data or theoretical discussions. Each chapter is divided into short, self-contained units that address key topics illustrated by uniformly drawn, full-color illustrations, many brand new to this edition. The sixth edition of this successful textbook newly covers:

  • Toll-like receptors, their ligands and intracellular activation pathways
  • The key role of activation induced cytidine deaminase (AID) in somatic hypermutation and class switch recombination.
  • The autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene in self-tolerance and autoimmunity
  • T and B cell activation and the immunological synapse, as well as characterization and mechanisms of action of T regulatory cells

Praise for the previous edition:

"This book is clearly a precious resource for undergraduate, graduate and medical students alike… For those who need an introduction to the fascinating world of immunology, this book should most certainly spark the interest."

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy read, great color pictures!
The Coico Immunology book is what I am currently using as my (required) textbook for medical school Immuno course. It is a GREAT text, especially this new edition. Fabulous color pictures (I am all about the pics!) and easy to read text. Plus, it's not a huge volume, so everything is summed up comprehensively but succintly (leaving nothing out, without being a tome). Highly recommended textbook.

If you have more than a couple months for your board review it would be a handy tool as well, although First Aid does a brilliant job of covering the high yield stuff you will see on the USMLE.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I'm sorry to say, but this book is so bad. It's a waste of money, time, and everything else. I might sell this book, but I would feel bad for anyone who ends up buying it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Somebody's got to stick up for this book
I almost didn't buy this book after reading some of the reviews here. But I have been getting killed by the immunology questions on Kaplan's QBank, so I decided to get it after all. So far it has been a very good decision.

The best part about this book? I got it today and I am already more than 1/3 of the way through it - it is clear, concise, and easy to get through. Someone else wrote in their review of this book that people should get Levinson's immunology text instead - but it is 600+ pages! I don't have time to read that much before I take Step 1. This is a very good review book...if you are trying to learn immunology from scratch you are probably going to be lost, but the High Yield series assumes you've already taken medical school coursework and need a focused review source, not a complete course in immunology.

Pros:
-Concise
-Well organized; easy to find the information I need
-Last few sections of the book are almost entirely clinically focused - just what is needed for USMLE preparation

Cons:
-Some of the diagrams are hard to follow (but I don't know how to make the complement pathway look better, so I can't blame them)
-I would have liked a few more graphics to break up the text and help illustrate concepts.
-The review questions at the end are not very "USMLE like" - they are more straightforward basic review than actual board prep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review book
Perfect review book for the USMLE step 1.It is quick yet thorough.I found it was a great supplement to what was in First Aid and had all of the pertinent information.I didn't see any topics on the boards that weren't covered in the book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, readable, and basic introduction to immunology
This book is a bit under 300 pages and is small and easy to carry around, although not quite pocket sized. It lives up to its title and does indeed give the reader a basic and bare bones overview of immunology. A chapter can be read in about an hour and a dedicated student could read the entire book in a week. We used this with our first-year immunology course in medical school and I read the text in its entirety four entire times. The chapters are designed to be more or less self contained, and there is a lot of repetition, although I found this to be beneficial in terms of actually committing the material to memory. For first time students of immunology, I highly recommend this text as a starting point. It's small size make it ideal for quick review before taking the USMLE exam, as well, while larger books would be unsuitable for this task.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures and format
Easy to use, easy to read. I enjoyed this even though it was a library copy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent graphics to understand visually
This book is very concise and has excellent pictures and tables to depict the most pertinent information about Immunology. The graphics and tables are all colorful and easy to understand. That said, the book is not as detailed as some other books out there, but for my course I took in pharmacy school, it was good enough. Where it lacked in detail I picked up in the lecture. This book is excellent for understanding immunology, especially if it's your first time ever taking immunology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing figures! Absolutely reader friendly.
This book is flat out the best if you want to understand immunology!
The figures are key! And the text presentation style makes it very palpable even for someone with a non-bio background.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to stimulate residents
I use the cases in the book to help educate pediatric residents and medical students about immunology. Some of these diseases are so rare that you will probably never see them, unless you are looking and working in a referral center for immunodeficiency. The authors have done a great job of presenting interesting cases with good explanations to support the diagnoses.A must read for anyone studying clinical immunology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the USMLE
The book is full of high yield tables and figures. I think is useful for the USMLE but only after reading another source like Medical Microbiology and Immunology Examination and Board Review or from Kaplan. It also has many interesting questions at the end of each case. Is a very well organized text; don't think that you're going to see only cases and questions, NOT it begins each case with the basic concepts in that topic, then the case, and detail explanations of the disease, and some questions. If you don't have the time to read the complete text, I think that you can do very well just with the tables and Figures(full color), it contains some MRIs, CT, x-rays, and electron microscopies. Most of the cases are about the most high yield diseases (immunologic diseases) found in the USMLE and some are about diseases that you may have never heard but that may be tested as gene knock-outs or mutations cases. Is useful for USMLE Step 1,2 and 3 since it gives you basic concepts, pathogenesis and explanations about treatment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and interesting
These case studies helped me grasp the esoteric ideas of immunology.I would recommend this book to other medical students. It is succinct and to the point. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and too bulky for step 1
As a medical student, our Micro course required this book because it had USMLE style questions in it and no one would buy the massive medical micro book that wasn't a review. Okay, so this book is actually out of date on a lot of subjects and doesn't even give accurate information on the pathogenesis, especially the virology and mycology sections. If you are reviewing for the USMLE step 1, this book is WAY to cumbersome to read in the 4-7 weeks that you have to review. If you need a quick brush up, Google "South Carolina Microbiology" and you should find a website that will provide more than enough information for the Step. i.e., save your money, look at the pathmicro site from SC, and buy q-bank!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Immunology Section! Must read for Step 1
I only read the 90 or so pages of this book that covered Immunology as per the recommendation of many other students that had used it solely for that. It is by far the best immunology text I have come across, especially for Step 1 review (on account of the short length of the immuno section) and I own at least 3 immuno books including High Yield, Case Files, and some Lange review of Micro/Immuno book that I do not think are nearly as good. If you are thinking about buying an Immunology book to review for Step 1 or even to use during a med school immunology course, look no further. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superior to "Made Ridiculously Simple" micro review book
My Micro professor writes questions for the USMLE Step 1. I was not doing well on his exams, but this book helped shoot my exam score up by 14%! I had used the "Made Ridiculously Simple" micro review book, but I found it too superficial. It helps to know the "why"; I could never just memorize and regurgitate for an exam. This book is well updated, colored photos are great, well organized and thorough but not to endless detail. *One weak point: the immunology section is disappointing, but I would still recommend it for the micro part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I had Dr. Chamberlain as my infectious Disease instructor. He is able to make a difficult subject both interesting and entertaining. The format of the book allows for a complete understanding of how infectious microbes effect different organ systems. Together with the easy to undestand text and fantastic color pictures, it makes for one of the best medical microbiology book on the market. Do yourself a favor and do not pass up this book...you will not regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ilustrative and Pedagogic
Is a book that I use to teach inmunology to basic science students in medical school, and has great ilustrations which you can download from its site. I recommend it to students and teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good condition
the book was in great condition and the delivery was very fast. the book is brand new just like they said it would be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Roitt's Immunology is a good review
Nice update on immunology that includes more recent findings at the molecular/cellular level. This is a more general, broad review of the field that takes you to where immunologists are focusing their efforts today. A good example is the chapter on vaccines and vaccines in development. However, if I were someone who was needing a textbook to review medical immunology for a licensing exam, this is not the book to use. This text is more appropriate for graduate students or others engaged in research who want a more detailed overview of the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential Immunology
GREAT text! Great website. I found this book to be really helpful, gives just enough info without being too much. Excellent pictures and managible text. I recommend you get this book early on in the course, cause you'll need it. My prof took lots of pictures from it and I found it to be a better explination than other books. I used it to fill in gaps and get clearer ideas of things.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE CHOICE OF MANY DISCERNING LEARNERS
The inclusion of all the latest abstruse developments in the field of immunology was part of a concerted effort to make this latest edition of "Roitt's Essential Immunology" standout in the crowd. It is an elaborate text whose popularity attests to its high quality.
Good enough, the traditional use of simple descriptions were retained in this new edition, while additional efforts were made in order to simplify most of the complex issues associated with immunochemistry and immunopathology. This textbook is a one-volume knowledge base whose accurate differentials are largely due to extensive facts validations. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs Correction and More Work
This book was required for a MT class.I have found several discrepencies in this book and errors in the review questions.I think this book would be confusing for someone without any background in immunology because it jumps around a lot and doesn't paint a very good picture.I wonder why my department chose this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Worst Textbook Ever
SUMMARY: This book is poorly organized and does a horrendous job of explaining the subject matter to someone learning it for the first time. It is heavily technical, and does not explain anything so much as state a string of facts. The author often uses terms and concepts in one chapter that are not explained or defined until several chapters later. The few diagrams and charts included are just as complicated and confusing as the text, and are puzzles within themselves.
It is the worst textbook I have ever used, and I think a class would be better with NO textbook rather than this one.

REVIEW: I already owned the 3rd edition of this book, and was hugely disappointed when a new class I was taking required the 4th edition.

What is true of the 3rd edition is true of the fourth:

Like everyone else has said (except perhaps the first review, which was likely written by the author or her family) this book is poorly organized and hard to follow. I think it lacks a SINGLE sentence that is written in "plain English". Furthermore, rather than attempting build your knowledge stone by stone, it often uses terms and concepts in one chapter which are not defined or explained until several chapters later. It does not explain ANYTHING, ever, and simply states a long string of technically heavy facts which are nearly impossible to digest.
I cannot convey to you how much I hated this book. If your class requires it, pray to god you have a professor good enough to make up for what this book lacks.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly organized
I have been a medical technologist for 16 years and have taught immunology for 12 years in the classroom and clincial setting. This book is poorly organized and not relevant to the normal clinical lab.New terms for a med tech student are used in the first chapter and then defined in later chapters. There is an entire section on RID which only high volume reference labs use and is no longer recommended by ASCP to be covered in med tech schools. The lack of newer illustrations and photographs, and boring layouts of tables and charts is also a negative.I have actually given our students websites to refer to instead of sections in this book to complete their objectives.
Signed MDM, MT(ASCP) SI

1-0 out of 5 stars Too complex for words
This book along with others by the author are extremely complex and confusing to a student who does not have a working knowledge of this subject. It is as if she went through the dictonary to see how hard of words she could use to make herself look "super dooper" smart. You would have to be a medical student to even get the gist of what she is saying. This book's lack of color and understandable diagrams makes it even harder to follow. I would not recommend this book to anyone but PhDs, MDs, and someone who enjoys being utterly confused.

1-0 out of 5 stars A book about as good as her teaching...
This book is complex. Any normal student would be completely overwhealmed by this book geared more towards Medical School students rather than traditional college students. The language is too technical and the photos are laughable. There are no colorful pictures for those of us who like to be able to actually see what we are learning, there is no clear cut explaination of any of the suggested topic, and all in color green and the suggested photograph on page 199. Other than subtle hints of green, this black and white "textbook" is utterly and completely boring! ... Read more

I bought this book as a required text for my med school immunology block. My firs time using the book. I like the images and captions. I also like the fact that key terms are not only defined at the back of the book but a quick summary of how these terms apply within the text is given. What I dislike about the book is the fact that topics are not well organized; they're scattered all over the book. I only used it for reference and for the cartoons/images.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource
Good review book with great online question bank.I am a huge fan of the Rapid Review series!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another very good Rapid Review book
The more and more I look into Rapid Review, the more I realize how great their series really is (NOT just things written by Dr. Goljan). The book is written very well and things flow very easily. This is of course a review book, and should be used along with your course material and also to study for the USMLE Step 1 exam.

First Aid gives this book an "A" for Micro and Immuno, and I definitely agree.Clinical Micro Made Ridiculously Simple is far too long for boards review. The charts CMMRS provides ARE GOOD, but its too much to read if you didn't do so along with your course material.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast, Fast, Fast
So, lets get to the point. This is a really fast book to move through. It has highlighted words inside bullet points that make reading each chapter easy after you have already read the chapter once. The experienced student will find this book to be a quick, concise review that is not bogged down in detail or words. However, there is a down side to moving at this pace.A beginner will feel lost and confused. What looks like a quick review to an advanced reader will become a memorization of bullet points if you don't have a little background to begin with. The questions that are provided are excellent and board worthy. However, they are not found at the end of each chapter.A couple of full length tests are at the end of the book, but you will not be able to practice after finishing a chapter.Online access, which comes with the book for free, does break up the questions a little more, but not into chapters. You really won't be able to practice questions until you have all of the book read, or you will need to filter through questions to find the ones that you can answer (an awful waist of time).Still, if you are trying to decide between BRS and this one, pick this one.You will be happier with the well organized easy to follow outline that isn't bogged down in details, and unfortunately you will find BRS immuno or micro just as difficult for a beginner. Before using this book, I used parham immuno and Microbio made ridiculously simple. It would benefit you to use these books (or at least ridiculously simple) before trying to master this one or in tandom.

3-0 out of 5 stars mediocre review book
I did not find this book too helpful... especially since I've never taken Immunology before. I ended up purchasing the Kuby Immunology textbook which is much better (also more costly).

This may be a good book for someone who is looking for a book to review concepts before Board exams. But even then... I'd probably prefer BRS or First Aid to this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Review of Micro
This is a fairly well-written review of micro for the Boards. However, this would not be my first choice for studying micro- I would recommend instead to use Micro Made Ridiculously Simple and the Kaplan microbiology.
One of the good features in this book that I like in comparison to the BRS is the onine questions which sevre well for a quick kill review. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not on par with the BRS series
I was very disappointed with this BRS.I have collected most BRS's for MS-1s and have been impressed with the thorough but concise manner in which information is conveyed.
In contrast, micro is outdated, redundant, disorganized and generally not useful.
The one high point of this book is that the immuno section is good.It helped me greatly with our half semester immuno course.Otherwise I would have given it only 1 star.
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend a better resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review, great questions
This book has covers all the necessary topics, including immunology. But the best part is that it has a total of 416 questions!!This is a great source of practice questions for the USMLE.Still, it could use more pictures and diagrams.Just for the questions its worth the money.

2-0 out of 5 stars truly useless book
i just took the nbme shelf exam and i must say without reservation that this book was not very good.look to other review books if you want to study for the shelf or for the boards. ... Read more
