Product Description
One approach to the introduction of computational material to the classroom is to supplement a textbook with modern computer codes. Unfortunately most codes are expensive, designed for commercial use, without source code and may require special software. Visual Hydrology provides a cheaper and simpler alternative, supplying computational exercises that can be fully assimilated by students, and allowing them to activate, understand and reproduce modern computer code. Visual Hydrology aims to: *explain the structure of modern object-oriented computer code; *provide the source code for worked examples; *numerically check the worked examples used in text; *show how worked examples can be used with alternative data; *describe and reference the underlying theory; *provide additional exercises with each worked example; *use Microsoft Excel 2000 software alone. Requiring only a basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel(tm), this primer teaches the uses of modern and readily-available computer code for engineering computation.Visual Hydrology demonstrates codes for common and practical examples used in hydrological engineering, and will be a valuable resource to students, research workers and consulting engineers in the water-related sector. ... Product Description

While there are a growing number of high-resolution space-based systems for measuring precipitation, instances of the use of these products for surface hydrology are rare. This book, which covers both scientific and practical matters, aims to change that. With contributions from a panel of researchers from a wide range of fields, the chapters focus on evaluating the potential, utility and application of high resolution satellite precipitation products in relation to surface hydrology.

Focusing on the way the algorithms for the precipitation products evolved, the accuracy assessment of those products in different regions of the world, and the application of the precipitation products to various decision support systems, the book is at the interface between satellite rainfall and surface hydrologic applications. It dwells on issues that are of concern at hydrologic scales of application. In doing so, it provides very useful information to practitioners, researchers and graduate students who need to explore the latest on satellite precipitation products for various hydrological purposes.

Crucially, the book provides examples of real-world applications of satellite rainfall products in operational hydrology and real-time decision-making. This enables readers to understand the potential of satellite rainfall products for practical applications ranging from agricultural/crop monitoring to flood and landslide detection in developing countries.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical book for Practicing Engineers
This book discusses most aspects of stormwater hydrology, provides theory of various competing methods, AND many worked examples. The format is very readable, and the explanations helpful. While I found the book very useful, and would buy it again, it has very little information on infiltration basins, and the TR-20 program included has been outmoded by commercially available programs. ... Product Description
FROM THE PREFACE: This book attempts to combine two separate themes: a description of one of the links in the chain of the water cycle inside the earth's crust i.e., the subsurface flow; and the quantification of the various types of this flow, obtained by applying the principles of fluid mechanics in porous media. The first part is the more descriptive, and geological of the two. It deals with the concept of water resources, which then leads us on to other links in the cycle: rainfall, infiltration, evaporation. runoff, and surface water resources. The second part is necessary in order to quantify ground water resources. It points the way to other applications, such as solutions to civil engineering problems including drainage and compaction; and transport problems in porous media, including aquifer pollution by miscible fluids, multiphase flow of immiscible fluids, and heat transfer in porous media, i.e., geothermal problems. However, the qualitative and the quantitative aspects are not treated separately but combined and blended together, just as geology and hydrology are woven together in hydrogeology. ... Read more

Product Description
Deterministic Methods in Systems Hydrology presents the basic theory underlying the multitude of parameter-rich models which dominate the hydrological literature. Its objectives are to introduce the elements of systems science as applied to hydrological problems; to present flood prediction and flood routing as problems in linear systems theory, clarifying the basic assumptions and evaluating their accuracy; and to review and to evaluate some deterministic models of components of the hydrological cycle, with a view to assembling the most appropriate model of catchment response, for a particular problem in applied hydrology. The material is developed in two parts: the first four chapters present the systems viewpoint, the nature of hydrological systems, some systems mathematics and their application to direct storm runoff.  The final four chapters cover linear conceptual models of direct runoff, the fitting of conceptual models to data, simple models of subsurface flow and non-linear deterministic models.  ... Product Description
This book presents the latest developments of urban hydrology and hydraulic design procedures for storm water management. It also addresses drainage planning which is an approach that integrates both local and regional efforts to identify drainage conveyance and storage facilities based on hydrologic optimization and cost minimization, individually and collectively. In general, the first six chapters cover the hydrologic procedures for rainfall and runoff predictions, and the next 12 chapters focus on hydraulic designs of urban channel, culvert, street inlet, sewer drain, detention basin, retention basin, infiltration basin, low impact designs, and storm water modeling techniques by various routing methods.
Hydrology analyses are lengthy in calculation and repetitive in procedure. As a result, Excel Spreadsheet is the most useful and handy tool for hydraulic and hydrologic designs. This book includes 18 sets of spreadsheets developed for 18 subjects. With these spreadsheets, it is easy for the reader to conduct sensitivity tests.
Many of the design methods documented in this book have been adopted as the recommended design procedure by Denver, Las Vegas, and Sacramento metropolitan areas in the United States. Based on these methods, there are many design computer models that have been developed and supported by the Denver metro governments for stormwater design purposes. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars not a reader, just for reference
I've only read the first 2 chapters, but the book to this point is riddled with grammatical and factual errors. For example, on the first page of Ch. 2: (The)"Atmosphere is a blanket of gasses, suspended liquids and solids that entirely envelop the earth, extending outward for several thousand kilometers."Admittedly it's hard to tell where the atmosphere ends, but several thousand?!This is an extreme example, but I'll definitely be sure to read the theoretical documentation very closely. However, the documentation is why I have the book, as it does provide a dedicated review of the work that's been done up to the present and has enough references to keep me reading for a while. Thanks for the references if not the writing. ...
