Product Description

The science of physical hydrology centers on the physical principles involved in the study of the occurrence and movement of water on and beneath the earth's surface. Because of its far-reaching implications for other disciplines, physical hydrology is of interest to students in fields ranging from the environmental sciences to engineering, policy studies, and even law.

In this introductory-level text the authors begin from the premise that the complexities of modern hydrology can be mastered by understanding basic physical principles of fluid movement. Focusing first on analysis at the scale of a single watershed, they then introduce the mechanics of fluids in closed conduits and open channels. They reevaluate catchment processes in light of fluid mechanics, open channel hydraulics, and groundwater flow. In a concluding chapter, they stress the importance of understanding water movement in the environment by exploring the relationship of hydrology to such disciplines as atmospheric science, ecology, and geology.

Accompanying the book is a CD-ROM, which provides a Web version of the text (Netscape Navigator 2.0 or later required). Included are video demonstrations, additional content and interactive review questions, and extensive links to facilitate study and review. Instructions for using the Web version are included. Also on the CD-ROM are simulation tools to study hydrological processes (MATLAB student version 5.0 required).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory text
You'll need adequate background in calculus and maybe a bit of physics to get anything from the book, but overall it is a very good introductory text for people coming to physical hydrology from another hard science or engineering discipline.Like most other professions, hydrology is very jargon-y, and the book does a decent job of matching words to concepts. The glossary in the back helps with that as well.

I was very impressed with with section on floods. This chapter serves as an example of the overall strength of the text.It goes over the various types of hydrographs, gives plenty of definitions, shows illustrations and examples, and also goes over in minor detail, the physics involved in flooding.

The book comes with a CD with problem sets as well as the full text.In general the problem sets are helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Physical Hydrology
This book is perfect for the determinist hydrology. Some applications are joined to this book in a CD.
Good luck for the water scientists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book by any standard
This is a sort of elementary textbook, and should help biologists, chemists, environmentalists, and geologists to obtain fundamentals of hydraulics and hydrology. I am a professional hydrologist, but still enjoyed reading that book. The main value is in proper selection of the subjects, and exceptionally clear explanation. Reading other books, many a times I had a feeling that the author had not fully understood the subject. The authors of Elements of Physical Hydrology have a great talent to make any subject simple, and they know what they are talking about. Excellent book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cutting-edge technology textbook will set the trend for 2000
This book comes with an accompanying CD-ROM that contains the entire book, as well as powerful features that cannot be used within the constaints of paper and ink.Movies, appendices, internet links, and real-time mathematical models can be run in the context of a well-written text.Helpful interactive end-of-chapter Q/A sections and the ability to search though the text or automatically click linked words to see their definition in the gloassary is yet unparalelled in today's classrooms.A must have just for the approach to teaching! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A down to earth book of essential hydrology for applications
This book is an essential read for civil/water/hydraulic/waterresources/environmental engineers who need a bit more hydrology necessaryfor understanding the hydrology applied in their disciplines.

The bookdefines hydrology and proceeds to indicate the essential difference betweenapplied hydrology and just scientific hydrology. Beginning with thetraditional presentation of the hydrologic cycle, all the components of thecycle are dealt with in more detail in the subsequent chapters of the bookto indicate the applications involving each and appropriate examplesgiven.

Non-verbose explanations with adequate real examples are used inpresentations of meteorology/solar radiation, rainfall/snowmelt,evaporation, infiltration, streamflow and hydrographs/unit hydrographs, groundwater occurrence and hydraulics, probability distributions/extremevalue analysis/design floods/storms, river morhology, sedimentation, computer modelling, flood routing by hydrologic and hydraulic methods, andintroduction to applications. These are by no means all the main contents -but just indicative of the variety of included essential topics.

It maybe old (my edition of 1988) but still contains all the hydrology anengineer may ever need. ... Read more

Nowhere is the conflict between economic progress andenvironmental quality more apparent than in the mineral extractionindustries. The latter half of the 20th century saw major advances inthe reclamation technologies. However, mine water pollution problemshave not been addressed. In many cases, polluted mine water longoutlives the life of the mining operation. As the true cost oflong-term water treatment responsibilities has become apparent, interest has grown in the technologies that would decrease theproduction of contaminated water and make its treatment less costly. This is the first book to address the mine water issue head-on. Theauthors explain the complexities of mine water pollution by reviewingthe hydrogeological context of its formation, and provide anup-to-date presentation of prevention and treatment technologies. Thebook will be a valuable reference for all professionals who encounterpolluted mine water on a regular or occasional basis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars curtain call...
Simply the best book on mine water treatment. Period.I have been a consulting engineer dealing with environmental problems for over 20 years now - and this is my "go to" book on the subject.

Yes, there is a high reliance on empirical equations...But the reality is that most data sets in the mine water remediation field do not allow a more detailed analysis.

Globally, the mining industry is grappling with a huge paradigm shift as remediation costs are increasingly internalized as part of the "cost of doing business" rather than a cost that can be (hypothetically) externalized and avoided.Mine waste projects typically deal on time scales of decades and centuries and this is where natural treatment solutions (like the ones described in this book) really come to the forefront.

If you are in the mining industry, or deal with mine wastes, you need this book on your shelf. If a better book can be written, I welcome the authors; otherwise I would consider this to be the best that can be written on the subject without a quantum leap in data collection.

Simply the best in the field; there are no encores.

What is the one thing that no-one can do without? Water. Where water crosses boundaries - be they economic, legal, political or cultural - the stage is set for disputes between different users trying to safeguard access to a vital resource, while protecting the natural environment. Without strategies to anticipate, address, and mediate between competing users, intractable water conflicts are likely to become more frequent, more intense, and more disruptive around the world. In this book, Delli Priscoli and Wolf investigate the dynamics of water conflict and conflict resolution, from the local to the international. They explore the inexorable links between three facets of conflict management and transformation: Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), public participation, and institutional capacity. This practical guide will be invaluable to water management professionals, as well as to researchers and students in engineering, economics, geography, geology, and political science who are involved in any aspects of water management. ... Product Description
Vadose Zone Hydrology describes the elements of the physical processes most often encountered by hydrogeologists and ground-water engineers in their vadose zone projects. It illustrates the application of soil physics to practical problems relevant to the characterization and monitoring of the vadose zone. It includes an introduction to physical processes, including basic flow theory, and provides examples of important field-scale processes that must be recognizable by hydrogeologists. Considerable attention is given to the concepts of recharge, including how it is most accurately evaluated in the vadose zone. Field and laboratory methods for characterizing hydraulic properties in the vadose zone are also covered, and case studies illustrating these methods are provided. New and emerging technologies for monitoring the vadose zone, particularly for the purpose of detecting contaminants, are highlighted. In the last section of the book, additional case studies are presented, demonstrating applications related to seepage detection, landfill monitoring, and soil gas investigations. This book is written from the perspective of hydrogeologists and is designed to be directly applicable and to maintain continuity and consistency between chapters. It will be an invaluable primer for environmental or geotechnical consultants, regulators, or students who have no prior formal academic training in unsaturated flow concepts. Because the text contains some of the latest advances in this field, it will be an excellent reference for geologists and engineers currently working on problems of vadose zone hydrology. ... The basic concepts and theory of vadose zone hydrology is presented. The text is well written and organized.I've found the information on vadose zone monitoring, characterizing, and deep soil-water movement very useful. The author also presents case studies which demonstrate the practical application of the subject matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good geoscience textbook for understanding the vadose zone
I have used Dan Stephens' book as a textbook in a graduate-level Geologyclass on the vadose zone.It was ideal.A lot of unsaturated zone bookshave been published in the last several years, but none of the others wassuitable for my purposes.Dan is an engaging speaker and teacher with lotsof real-world experience, both as a teacher/researcher at New Mexico Techand as an environmental consultant specializing in vadose zone problems. His experience comes across in this book, as does his personable way ofpresenting the information.Yes, there are equations. But this is not asoil physics textbook as much as it is a geosciences perspective on thevadose zone. This perspective is based on his extensive experience in aridand semi-arid settings, but some of his comments shed light on vadose zoneprocesses in more humid climates.I should add that his treatment of thisdry subject is not "dry", and relatively easy to read given thetextbook breadth of material covered. Each paragraph could be expandedinto a separate dissertation.Stephens has condensed a wealth of material, both practical and theoretical.I recommend it. ...
