5-0 out of 5 stars Hydrology and Hydraulic Systems by Ram S. Gupta
This is a good book. I bought this book for my class Water Resources Design.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great coverage, confused organization
This is a great deal for a textbook. It covers the basics of hydrology and hydraulics very thoroughly, and better than most other water-resources textbooks. The figures in the third edition are better than in previous ones, though some additional photos or figures would be helpful to augment the many schematics. The only real problem is that you have to jump around a lot to cover any topic in a coherent way, as different techniques for, say rainfall-runoff analysis, may appear in 2 or 3 different chapters. But it's all in there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent refresher
Bought this book to brush up on hydrology and hydraulics for the PE exam.I wish my college courses had used this book.It presents somewhat complex material in a format that is easier to understand than most books. There are example problems for every type of calculation.I highly recommend this text to college professors to use in their classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute must have for Exam Review and for Everyday Engineering
This book is the absolute very best to study Hydrology and Hydraullics for classroon study. After graduation this book was used for my exam review and I reference the manual in everyday actual applications. You will find there are many books to study hydrology and hydraullics but none that is more fundamentally rich with extensive examples of real life situations. This book is the most used reference book I have used.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for hydrology and hydraulics
I have recently graduated and am currently working as a Civil/Transportation Engineer for a consulting company.I have used the book in my Water Resources course and worked on it in my Advanced Hydrology class. The strength of the book is all the examples. Many of these are conveniently set up in Table form with a key provided at the bottom of each table. It is an excellent resource that I am using as a reference material now.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst text book ever created
Please never ever buy or use this textbook. The authors should be ashamed of themselves for publishing this worthless book.It is sloppiest text book I have ever seen.Ever! This is by far the worst text book I have ever used. And this is not my first go round.I have a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Master of Education. This book has all kinds of issues - one example they have 5280 x 52800 for converting square miles into square feet (really - no one caught that?), other places the authors say they have previously introduced a variable and yet it doesn't show up until 3 pages later, they don't carry units out through the examples, they don't plug the numbers into the equations, and on and on I could complain about this book.Shame on the group I am taking this course through for using this book but shame on Pearson for publishing this book of nonsense. The problems are worded poorly and the ideas in most cases are barely defined but yet you are supposed to figure out how to do the work.Just look at phi index - I had to look it up online (and a ton of other things) to figure out what they were talking about.Nearly all of the problems in the chapter were centered on phi index yet there was only a short worthless description in the book. The fact that it has made it to a fifth edition is amazing to me; had I submitted any of this work to my professors I would have failed every assignment I submitted. It doesn't deserve the one star you are required to give it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many typos
This is possibly the worst textbook I have ever read. There are typos in nearly every chapter and not just grammatical errors, but calculation errors, wrong answers for the homework, equations that are wrong, wrong units in homework problems.I have had to pencil in a dozen corrections, and I'm sure there are errors that I haven't found yet. And this is the Fifth Edition...

4-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start
I suppose it would be nice if all engineering texts were as easy to read as the popular novel of the day.Unfortunately, assuming you are a water resource engineer like me, we wade through a topic which is not easily written.

I first used this book during my Masters Degree program. The instructor was not as helpful as I would have liked, but since all of the lectures, homework and tests were pulled from the book, I decided to stop listening and start reading. With a bit of patience, trying to acclimate to the authors' presentation style, I found the book to be helpful.

The description and calculation of Unit-hydrographs, hydrographs and moving between the two was very helpful.Either during, or shortly after taking this course I took the Professional Engineers licensing exam and, to my success, used this book on a couple of questions related to the unit-hydrograph method.

Overall the book deserves 4 stars for being a good place to start. It lacks the final fifth star because it does get a little confusing as the authors attempt to explain many more competing approaches than they should have. There were also a couple of errors in the calculations used as examples, which had me scratching my head for a while. The good thing is that the description of the methods shown in the examples was correct, so whoever created the examples did not follow the direction properly a couple of times.

I recommend this book for anyone trying to study for the P.E. exam, or as a desk reference at work when you want to know what your hydrology software is doing.

2-0 out of 5 stars ???????
This book is a VERY difficult read. Not only do you need to try and understand the concepts of hydrology but you must also attempt to navigate your way through a confusing maze of "wording" that could easily have been more understandable. ... Read more

Product Description
Dingman's goal throughout Physical Hydrology is to provide an understanding of the conceptual basis of the subject and introduce the quantitative relations involved in answering scientific and water-resources-management questions. The author supplies the basic physical principles necessary for developing a sound intuitive and quantitative sense of the way in which water moves through the land. He outlines the assumptions behind each conceptual approach but also identifies some of the limitations of each. Rich in substance and written to fulfill the needs of future researchers and experts in the field, Dingman treats hydrology as a distinct geoscience that is continually expanding to deal with large-scale changes in land use and climate. The text is organized around four principal themes: the basic concepts underlying the science of hydrology; the global climate, the global hydrologic cycle, and the relation of hydrology to soils and vegetation; the land phase of the hydrologic cycle; and water-resource-management principles and the ways in which hydrologic analysis is applied in that context. Coverage includes approaches for determining regional evapotranspiration rates, the movement of ground water in rock fractures, and the relation of hydrologic regimes to past and future climates. It offers in-depth discussions of hydrologic modeling--model use, modeling terminology, and the process of model development; water-resource-management goals and processes; water supply and demand; water-quality issues; floods and flood-frequency analysis; and drought and low-flow analysis. Outstanding features that facilitate learning include: A tabulation of documented trends in global change of climatic and hydrologic quantities; information on methods for handling missing data; discussions of the BROOK90 model and how it can be used with the text; Internet links to hydrologic information; exercises designed for student exploration; and Excel spreadsheets on the accompanying CD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Physical hydrology
This book is amazing. It helps me to learn the hydrology process from both global and regional viewpoints. It is definitely a foundation textbook for my research works on hydrology data mining.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard to use
I'll echo others when I say first that this books has a lot of great information. However, it's difficult to actually learn from. It's very equation-based, which is good, but the equations are often simply presented without any discussion. The ambiguity of units is frustrating, and it's difficult to tell whether an equation has a typo or not. I really think it could be better organised. For my course, I ended up getting other textbooks on hydrology from the library and generally avoiding "Physical Hydrology."

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick delivery and good quality
I am using this book as a course text in one course at grad school. In particular, I was impressed with the delivery quickly and and good quality of book.

At any rate, I am really satisfied with book and seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never disappointed with Dingman's text
In the past, if I needed a quick, understandable description of any hydrologic term or process, Dingman's text was the first choice. This is a well written, well organized text which offers all the fundamentals. If need to look up some hydro term or process, this text will invariably have it and if it doesn't offer a good description, it will give you a nugget of info to build on and further your research.Great text!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good information, not so great layout
There is a lot of good information packed into this book but as a student, I have found it a very frustrating textbook to use.The reader is bombarded with equations without a good general overview first.A glossary would also be helpful. The units of many equations are left out. This is confusing since for many empirical equations, the units cannot be derived from dimensional analysis. Finally, like many hydrology textbooks, there are literally hundreds of Greek symbols used throughout.Without any glossary or table of symbols used in each chapter, it is very difficult to go back and find the original definition and derivation, should I forget what one of the symbols stands for. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A Civil Engineer's Perspective
Not impressed. The print of the text is smudged.I did not find this book useful.I have been practicing civil engineering hydrologic design for 32 years, and I thought I had found a catch-all handbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reference for a Civil Engineer working with Water
I used this book as a course text in one course at grad school, and an unofficial text in numerous other courses. It is fairly specialized, geared toward the the intersection of civil engineering and hydrology. It contains an impressive breadth of subjects, some of which may now seem a little technologically quaint (although section 25.5.4 on meteor-burst telemetry is still incredibly cool). The bread and butter is immensely useful as a reference. In particular, I was impressed with the statistical elements of chapter 18, regarding the frequency analysis of extreme events.

The handbook has 29 chapters and 58 contributors:

part 1 - hydrologic cycle

1: Hydrology
2: Climatology
3: Precipitation
4: Evaporation
5: Infiltration and Soil Water Movement
6: Groundwater Flow
7: Snow and floating ice
8: Streamflow
9: Flood runoff
10: Flow routing

Part 2 - hydrologic transport

11: Water Quality
12:Erosion and Sediment Transport
13: Hydrologic effects of land use change
14: Contaminant transport in surface water
15: Contaminant transport in unsaturated flow
16: Contaminant transport in groundwater

part 3: hydrologic statistics

17: Statistical treatment of hydrologic data
18: Frequency analysis of extreme events
19: Analysis and modeling of hydrologic time series
20: Geostatistics

part 4: hydrologic technology

21: Computer models for surface water
22: Computer models for subsurface wate
23: Advances in hydrologic computation
24: Remote sensing

25: Automated data aquisition and transmission
26: Hydrologic forecasting
27: Hydrologic design for water use
28: Hydrologic design for urban drainage and flood control
29: Hydrologic design for groundwater pollution control

5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Hydrology
The book covers everything from the hydrologic cycle, climatology and precipitation to hydrologic design for groudnwater pollution control. This is a great book to use for reference material.I keep going back to this text when ever I am looking for a quick reference.

As hydrology is now approached from environmental and social perspectives--in addition to the more traditional physical geography and civil engineering perspectives--there has never been a more opportune time to develop a sound understanding of the field.

Introduction to Physical Hydrology provides students with a solid foundation in the core principles of the subject. Exploring the key rules that govern the flow of water on land, it considers the four major types of water: atmospheric, ground, soil, and surface. The text offers insights into major hydrological processes and shows how the principles of physical hydrology inform our understanding of climate and global hydrology. The book includes a carefully developed and class-tested pedagogical framework: it employs an extensive range of exercises, global examples, and a series of Math Toolboxes to help students engage with and master the material. 5-0 out of 5 stars 3rd edition is up-to-date
The reviews written in 2000 and 2001 referred to the 2nd edition. The 3rd edition, published in 2004, is now up-to-date.
The 3rd edition includes information on modern groundwater modeling methods (including the Modflow model), more coverage of chemical contamination in groundwater, and includes both U.S. and SI units in the examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars Groundwater Hydrology
This is a really good book covering a lot of the basics of groundwater hydrology. It covers occurrence, movement, well hydraulics, water wells, environmental influences, quality, and pollution, modeling subsurface investigations.A little outdated but can be used as a great complement to other more recent publications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Basic Reference
In spite of its age, this book continues to be an essential basicreference on the subject.Well organized and clearly written, the authorsstated goal was "to present the fundamentals of groundwater hydrologyin a manner understandable to [a wide variety of students andprofessionals]."If I were suddenly called to work in a foreigncountry and could only take one book, this would be the one.A slightdrawback is the use of metric units throughout, perhaps because the bookwas expected to be translated into a number of foreign languages. 1-0 out of 5 stars Painful
Very disorganized. TERRIBLE... TERRIBLE.... TERRIBLE INDEX. "Reservoir" -- subject covered over multiple pages-- is not included in the index. SERIOUSLY?! Pray your actual class isn't as painful as this book.

PS- NO COLOR (not okay considering how many photographs are included)

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Hydrology
I ordered this book for a geology class, "Water and Society". The book is simple yet complete enough to leave the reader with a full understanding of all aspects of the hydrology cycle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I picked up a copy of this book many years ago (probably an earlier edition). I thought it might be a candidate as a text for an introductory hydrology class for young civil engineers. I read the book and even used it one semester. I can offer a few comments on that basis.

First, this book is well-written. The language is clear and the prose is enjoyable. In fact, for a book intended to convey scientific material, it is exceptionally well-written and clearly understandable be anyone with a reasonable background.

When I used this book in the class, it was as a supplemental book intended to be a reader. I don't know whether the students appreciated it or not, but that was my intent.

What the book doesn't do is present technology. If you need to apply technology, then this book is not useful. A standard engineering textbook is required to provide that information. Viessman and Lewis is competent in this regard and is also well-written.

However, if you want to understand hydrologic principles without the need to execute computations, this book will do that very well. You will find much of what you want to know about hydrology from Manning's book. Then, if you need to execute computations, another text with that material will be more approachable, given the knowledge derived from Manning's book.

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn basic hydrology, particularly those who do not need to do hydrologic computations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners but...
For an introduction to hydrology this is a good book, but it's a little too basic and laymen for my tastes. This criticism aside, the information in this book is nevertheless good and adequate to provide you with decent background information in hydrology.

If you've had any education in basic meteorology, climatology, oceanography, etc... you won't find this book very useful since it is mostly a recap of 101 courses in the physical sciences, but for the rest of us who haven't had much experience in these fields, this book is not only very informative, but it is a very interesting read... who would've known the molecular structure of water was so unique and life-sustaining?! Alter it even a little and life would be impossible, lakes would freeze from the bottom up instead of the top down... and other weird possibilities! For the beginner, this book is easy to read, avoids math, and provides a relatively strong foundation.

I recommend this book the 90% of you who want to learn more about the physical sciences... but for the 10% looking for more details over what they already learned in beginning courses, look for another book since this one will only recap that info. ... Read more

Product Description
The curve number (CN) method for estimating direct runoff response from rainstorms was developed to fill a technological niche in the 1950s. Since then, use of the CN method has extended to other applications, and user experience and analysis have redefined numerous features of the original technology. In "Curve Number Hydrology: State of the Practice", an ASCE/EWRI Task Committee investigates the origin, development, role, application, and current status of the CN method. Topics in this report include: an introduction to curve number hydrology; the curve number method; findings and developments; structure of the basic equation; soil moisture modeling; calibration methods; current usage and professional practice; and recommendations. One of the Committee's recommendations is assigning a keeper to serve as the central source for responsible information and updates. An appendix provides solutions to the curve number equation. This publication will be valuable to water and environmental engineers involved in hydrology, especially the analysis of rainwater runoff problems. ... Read more

Product Description
Expanded from 12 to 15 chapters, this edition of Introduction to Hydraulics & Hydrology with Applications for Stormwater Management continues to guide readers to an understanding of the concepts of hydraulics and surface water hydrology as they are used in everyday civil engineering practice. Valued as a reference by professional civil engineers, land developers, public works officials, and land surveyors throughout the U.S., this book is also an important tool for students in these disciplines. The book begins by acquainting readers with the principles of hydrostatics and hydrodynamics, starting with fluid mechanics and progressing through pressure, flow, and energy considerations. In the expanded treatment of open channel flow, varied flow is presented, including backwater profiles and hydraulic jumps. Next, concepts of rainfall, runoff, and routing are fully explored and investigated. Finally, these concepts are applied to the solution of practical engineering problems, including: open-channel flow, orifice and weir flow, culvert flow and storm sewer design, culvert design, and detention basin design. A history of water engineering and discussion of the basic concepts of computation and design are included at the beginning of the book for the benefit of readers who may be new to this field. Clearly solved examples are also included throughout the book to assist readers in their efforts to apply theory to practice. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to follow
This was recommended to me to help prepare for a PLS exam.Maybe this is easy to follow if you have a civilengineering background (although if that were the case, I'm not sure why you'd be interested in an "Introduction" to this subject), but the author makes numerous apparent leaps and assumptions and introduces unqualified variables that frankly make this extremely difficult for a non-engineer like me to follow, especially without the aid of an instructor to fill in the gaps or answer any questions. The end of chapter problems are useless, because there aren't any solutions provided, and the CD-Rom that contains them apparently costs around $200.So I'm still searching for a surveyor-friendly book on this subject, but I feel I can say without further qualification that this isn't it, so I'd say steer clear on this one and save yourself a considerable chunk of money. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars the best
Professor Dr. Ven te Chow is simply the best. This book is good as it gets.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Text
I use this text to teach a first-semester graduate class for civil engineers who are targeting a graduate degree with emphasis on hydrology. I've been using the text for nearly ten years. It might be a little advanced for undergraduates, but certainly is in the grasp of advanced undergraduate students.

Applied Hydrology is the text I wanted way back when I was in graduate school. Chow was still alive but had not finished the book. I was introduced to his writing in his open-channel hydraulics text, which I thought (and still think) is the best. Applied Hydrology was assembled posthumously by Maidment and Mays, who did a good job putting together whatever remained of Chow's work. I'm very glad they undertook the process and published the work. It's an important text for my discipline specialty.

Part 1 of the text covers the basics and does it well. This material is timeless and will not change much as new research comes available. Part 2 covers analysis and shows its age, just a bit. Unit hydrographs and lumped-flow routing are old technologies and while updates are inevitable, the basic technologies will not change. Chapters 9 and 10 are a bit dated as substantial work has been done over the last 15 years. They're still good, but require supplementation. Chapters 11 and 12 again contain great fundamentals but the technology is changing. The theory of linear moments (L-moments) is working its way into hydrologic statistics for fitting distributions to datasets. Furthermore, there is a trend toward using resistant statistics (median, inter-quartile range, and others) for description of the statistics of hydrologic datasets. Part 3 on hydrologic design is still good, but is also showing its age just a little. Again, the basics are great and well-explained. However, as new data become available and new analyses of those data are accomplished, new interpretations also become available. This is true especially with precipitation atlases and the estimation of n-year precipitation events, and hence n-year hydrologic events.

My observations are not an indictment of Applied Hydrology; it remains my favorite engineering hydrology textbook and I will continue to use it to teach engineers about hydrology. In my opinion, this is the best upper-undergrauate/graduate engineering hydrology text available. Like all textbooks, it is beginning to show its age because technology is not stagnant. But its descriptions of core concepts and the application thereof remains top notch.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must for water resource engineers and students
I took a hydrology course taught by one of the authors (Larry Mays) using this book.Advantages of this book lies in (1) the arrangement of the contents is very logic-oriented, you don't feel aburpt jump from one chapter to another one, (2) the theory addressed in the text is concise, easy to read and understand, (3) the examples used to illustrate the theories are very correlated.Other books may be good too, however, in terms of "hydrology" alone, I haven't seen a better one.It is a useful reference for your understanding of hydrologic design manual, creteria.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent hydrology text
This is a well-written and fairly comprehensive textbook for the science and engineering of hydrology, suitable for undergraduate and graduate courses.I used it for a class taught by one of the authors (David Maidment), so it was a natural fit for the class, but I believe that any competent teacher could make good use of it.The example problems are useful and the explanations are clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK
A must have reference for those of you guys in the field of Applied Hydrology. If you are tackling the task of modeling some particular hydrologic process, you will find the detailed descriptions and flow charts very handy. Step by step derivations of equations, excellent referencing and convenient chapter setup makes this book a first-to-look reference. Although it is a 1988 print, you will hardly feel it unless you really dig into details like flow routing in meandering rivers.

I believe you will enjoy reading this book... ... Read more

Product Description
Although a few texts on forest hydrology are available, they cover very little, if any, background on water resources. On the other hand, books dealing with water resources do not cover topics on forest-water relations. The one exception to this is Forest Hydrology: An Introduction to Water and Forests. Now with the publication of a revised edition, this volume adds information from recent studies to go even further in providing an introduction to forest hydrology that brings water resources and forest-water relations into a single practical and comprehensive volume

Focusing on processes and general principles, the first six chapters provide an introduction and basic background in water and water resources, while the last seven chapters look at the impact of forests on water. Between these two groupings is a chapter that serves as an entry to the study of forest impacts on water resources, describing forests and forest characteristics important to water circulation, sediment movement, and stream habitat. This second edition also features new informationon forests and flooding, forest and stream habitat, snow vaporization processes, and GIS methods in hydrology research, examples on evaporation estimates, and a new appendix on forest interception measurements.

Employing examples and case studies, the book provides tools to help natural resource managers play an active role in policymaking and land-use planning, and in developing partnerships with stakeholders. It also offers unique perspectives for addressing urban sprawl. ... Read more

Product Description

Students and professors of hydrology, ecology, land-use management, forest and range management, soil science, physical geography, soil and water conservation, and watershed management will welcome this revision of the 1969 edition of An Outline of Forest Hydrology by John D. Hewlett and Wade L. Nutter.

The student pursuing a career in forest and wildland resources soon learns that no science is more fundamental to the art of land management than hydrology, but hydrology as a science traditionally has been subordinated to hydrology as technique. Older texts have focused on methods and applications to the exclusion of principle, occasionally leaving the hydrological effects of land use and vegetation to be interpreted from techniques rather than from knowledge of process. Soil, atmospheric, and vegetal phases of the hydrologic cycle of have neglected in many texts intended for the college student.

Hewlett’s new book focuses on natural processes and is intended to guide further study and to serve as a base for class lectures. The subject matter is organized to introduce key ideas and principles and to provide consistent terminology and clear graphic material to aid the student in comprehending the complex literature of hydrology.

A decently attempted foray into an otherwise exciting, yet overexamined academic topic.Catchment Hydrology is a field on the verge ofmedia saturation, it seems that every scholar has his new catchment hydrology theory he is willing to espouseto packed lecture halls and cable tv hosts throughout the nation. While some have actually made important breakthroughs ( Limerick, Berkowitz et al) others are just falling in line behind the vanguards lapping up the short lived fame and glory. Product Description

Hydrology in Practice is an excellent and very successful introductory text for engineering hydrology students who go on to be practitioners in consultancies, the Environment Agency and elsewhere. It has never been superseded by any other text in this respect.

This fourth edition of Hyrodology in Practice while retaining all that is excellent about its predecessor, by Elizabeth Shaw, replaces the material on the Flood Studies Report with an equivalent section on the methods of the Flood Estimation Handbook and its revisions. Other completely revised sections on instrumentation and modelling reflect the many changes that have occurred over recent years. The updated text has taken advantage of the extensive practical experience of the staff of JBA Consulting who use the methods described on a day-to-day basis. Topical case studies further enhance the text and the way in which students at undergraduate and MSc level can relate to it. The fourth edition will also have a wider appeal outside the UK by including new material on hydrological processes which also relate to courses in geography and environmental science departments. In this respect the book draws on the expertise of Keith Beven and Nick Chappell who have extensive experience of field hydrological studies in a variety of different environments, and teaching undergraduate hydrology courses for many years.

Second and final year undergraduates (and MSc) students of hydrology in Engineering, Environmental Science and Geography Departments across the globe, as well as professionals in environmental protection agencies and consultancies, will find this book invaluable. It is likely to be the course text for every undergraduate/MSc hydrology course in the UK and in many cases overseas too.
