Product Description

The importance of investigating karstified aquifers lies in their significance as a major source of drinking water. This book describes methods that are basic to all hydrogeological studies, such as hydraulic investigations, hydrochemistry, geophysics, isotope chemistry and modelling, but with the emphasis placed on their application to karst systems. Other techniques are specific to the karst environment, such as the speleological exploration of aquifers and water tracing. The various chapters of this book are written by experts in different methods. Most of the chapters are multi-authored, and the authors include hydrogeologists who are experienced in evaluating a variety of karst environments and who together, provide a comprehensive review of karst methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Manual
I've been working on geochemistry and hydro-geochemistry for the last three years and this book represent an "easy-to-follow" compendium of the most usual problems and situations that you can find on field. The author's explanations to some problems are quite ingenious and help to solve, in a practical way, most of the difficulties that you can find in real natural systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Approach to a Complicated Subject
The authors have managed to take a subject that can be dry and intimidating and make it readable and enjoyable.I have been in the consulting business as a hydrogeologist for 20 years, and found that I needed to review "the basics" due to a career change to Water Resources.I found the book to be well organized, well written, and especially useful were all of the examples provided.I think it would be a very good book for students (those just starting out) and for those, like me, who need to review subjects, such as "aquifer hydraulics."And, the chapter "How to Get Along with Driller's" should be mandatory reading for all students of geology/hydrogeology/engineering.

Product Description

Groundwater use is of fundamental importance to meet the rapidly expanding urban, industrial and agricultural water requirements in (semi) arid areas. Quantifying the current rate of groundwater recharge and define its variability in space and time are thus prerequesites for efficient groundwater resource managment in these regions, where such resources are often the key to economic development. Attention focuses on recharge of phreatic aquifers, often the most readily-available and affordable source of water in (semi) arid regions. These aquifers are also the most susceptible to contamination, with the recharge rate determining their level of vulnerability.  (Semi) arid zone recharge can be highly variable, the greater the aridity, the smaller and potentially more variable the natural flux.  Its determination is an iterative process, involving progressive data collection  and resource evaluation; there is also a need to use more than one technique to verify results.  Direct, localised and indirect recharge mechanisms from a spectrum of known sources are addressed in the framework of recharge from precipitation, intermittant flow and permanent water bodies.  The approach taken for each of these reflects the nature and current understanding of the processes involved.  The volume also reviews current recharge estimation challenges, outlines recent developments and offers guidance for potential solutions.

Product Description
In order to properly plan, design, and operate groundwater resources projects, it is necessary to measure - over time or distance - pertinent groundwater variables such as drawdown and discharge in the field. Applied Hydrogeology for Scientists and Engineers shows how to assess and interpret these data by subsurface geological setup and processing. The book helps readers estimate relevant groundwater parameters such as storativity, transmissivity, and leakage coefficient. The text addresses many interrelated disciplines such as geology, hydrology, hydrogeology, engineering, petroleum geology, and water engineering. Traditional and current models for application are presented. One of the unique features of the book is the inclusion of new and previously unpublished ideas, concepts, techniques, approaches, and procedures developed by the author. Among these are hydrogeophysical concepts, slope matching techniques, volumetric approach solution for complicated groundwater flows, non-Darcian flow law applications, aquifer sample functions, dimensionless-type straight line methods, non-linear flow-type curves, discharge calculations from early time-drawdown data, storage coefficient estimation procedure for quasi-steady state flow, and much more. The pitfalls in aquifer test analysis are also detailed. Fractured medium flow adds yet another dimension to the book. Each method is supplemented by actual field data applications from worldwide case studies.Applied Hydrogeology for Scientists and Engineers covers the topics of groundwater reservoirs, the evaluation of aquifer parameters, aquifer and flow properties, flow properties and bore hole tests, aquifer tests in porous and fractured media, well hydraulics, groundwater flow and aquifer tests, and field measurements and their interpretations. This new reference also works well as a post-graduate textbook on the subject. Applied Hydrogeology for Scientists and Engineers expands the reader's knowledge by providing valuable information not found in any other publication. ... Read more

This book is an introduction to hydrogeology and assumes that students have had one year of basic college calculus (differential and integral calculus). It's applicable for hydrogeololgy, geohydrology, groundwater and geologic fluids courses taken by juniors and seniors, and may also find application in graduate courses which emphasize the role of fluids in geologic applications.

The primary goal is to emphasize the geologic aspects of hydrogeology -- the text is not designed solely for those who desire to specialize in hydrogeology. Fluids are intimately involved in nearly all geologic processes, and this text is designed to introduce the average student to that world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very well-written textbook
"Introduction to hydrogeology" by Professor David Deming, University of Oklahoma, is a very well-written textbook which in its style and content provides a first class, sharp and well-focused introduction to some of the most important and most actual topics of hydrogeology.A very thorough and readable introduction to the "Fluids in the crust" (Chapter 1) is followed by chapters written with a fresh, insightful, and comprehensive approach to overview and then discuss in detail many issues, such as "Properties of porous media" (Chapter 3), "Driving forces and mechanisms of fluid flow (Chapter 7), "Abnormal fluid pressures" (Chapter 8), "Environmental Hydrogeology" (Chapter 9), "Earthquakes , stress, and fluids" (Chapter 12), or "Fluids and ore deposits" (Chapter 14).

The treatment of the subjects is thorough but it does not get bogged down in futile details or tedious mathematics. Many equations present in many chapters are fully derived from basic principles.Case histories, carefully chosen, illustrate the practical side of theoretical concepts.Biographies of the founders of the hydrogeology provide historical information on this science and help better understand the evolution of ideas in the field.

Logically structured and clearly written, the material is presented at a level accessible to the geological student with a limited physics and mathematics background. However, it contains a wealth of information and comment and will unquestionably prove of value and interest to a much wider readership. ... Product Description

The application of natural isotopes, stable as well as radioactive, has become a widespread tool for hydrological research, especially surface- and groundwater behaviour and exploration. By far the most common isotopes applied are those of the elements of hydrogen, oxygen and carbon, crucial in the water cycle. The concentration ratios of the stable isotopes in water vary, depending on the source of the water and natural processes such as evaporation and condensation. Radioactive isotopes may provide indications, depending on natural conditions, of the source of water and age, i.e. the time elapsed since infiltration. This is a textbook, explaining in a simple, but mathematically, physically and chemically correct form, the consequences of natural processes to stable isotope concentrations and radioactivities. After a broadly theoretical introduction, the elements of the water cycle are treated successively: Precipitation: globally, regionally and locally; Different forms of surface water: rivers, rivulets and small streams, lakes and stagnant waters, estuaries and the sea; Groundwater: infiltration and groundwater flow. The book is intended for students in the Earth Sciences, especially in Hydrology; trainees from developing countries; laboratory technicians and assistants; engineers involved in (geo)hydrological fieldwork and anyone who starts his work in natural abundances of stable or radioactive isotopes.

In the classroom, this same information will help students realize how familiar equations in hydrogeology are derived-an important step toward development of a student's own mathematical models.Unlike other applied mathematics books that are structured according to systematic methodology, Applied Mathematics in Hydrogeology emphasizes equation-solving methods according to topics. Hydrogeological problems and governing differential equations are introduced, including hydraulic responses to pumping in confined and unconfined aquifers, as well as transport of heat and solute in flowing groundwater. ...
