3-0 out of 5 stars Complete and detailed overview
Very nice book, but I would have expected the pictures to be next to the description of the animal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice photographs but correct?
This book looks very nice and the provided information is very helpful with determining the species. However, the first toad I met in Namibia, fits the description of Bufo gutturalis and the photograph of Bufo garmani. I think that these pictures are swapped. The second species I found is a tree frog with orange and black net-like pattern. With the pictures I cannot find it and my own photograph appears to be not enough to use the provided keys to the species. The third species I found is a small toad with a blinking green stripe in the middle of the back and this is exactly the same story.
Concluding: 192 very nice colour photographs and very clear and informative text for each species, but you need to have the animal in captivity (or dead) to use the keys. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The book to buy if you find a turtle...
...the size of a quarter on the kitchen floor, have recently moved to an entirely different eco-zone and have limited knowledge of turtles aside from being able to say, "Yes, that is a turtle".

Once determining, with great difficulty, the species - Northern Diamondback Terrapin - this book was a tremendous help. After I hurdled the basics, I appreciated the fact that this was more of an intermediary than a beginner's guide. It is nearly impossible to find any decent reference material on the subject, particluarly on Diamondback Terrapins, let alone something this easy to follow, in-depth and pictorial. The photos alone, which are sharp, nicely composed and plentiful, make this book worth having.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased
Diamondback Terrapins and Map Turtles are not easy to find good information on.Although the book only lightly covers the subjects, it is enough to help the average owner of these turtles.I found no glaring errors.I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful photos (and there were a lot of them).Altogether a well written beginner's book for all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for someone already in the hobby
This is a decent book for the map turtle enthusiast in the hobby and I'm glad to add it to my collection. The text is easy and fun to read with impressive glossy photos that make the book
stand out. This book covers all the basics of the hobby concerning map turtles in general. I do however, feel that additional material and a basic knowledge of turtles will be needed if the reader plans on purchasing a map as a first turtle. Painted and sliders are far more hardy and maps
can be tricky to care for by a beginner. This book is not very precise on care and the information in this book is general. For instance, it is stated in this book that map's enjoy eating snails, but cautions are left out to inform the reader of the dangers of parasites commonly found in pet store feeder snails that can be harmful to a turtle. Certain specifics are left out and as said before additional reading will be needed for the beginner. This book in my opinion is for the already seasoned hobbyist who needs general information and a brief overview of the care of the map turtle species. All in all a good book for this particular species. ... Read more

Excerpt: Herping is a term often used by professional and amateur Herpetologists to signify searching for reptiles or amphibians. Herping consists of many activities; any way one can find reptiles or amphibians can be considered herping. The activity or technique depends on the terrain and target species. These include, but are not limited to, searching under natural cover objects (such as rocks and logs) and artificial cover objects (such as trash or construction debris), sometimes called 'flipping,' as in 'flipping rocks' or 'flipping boards;' locating calling amphibians by ear, commonly done in pairs in order to triangulate on the location of the frog or toad; muddling or noodling for turtles by feeling around in mud or around objects submerged in water; dipnetting for aquatic amphibians and turtles; noosing lizards with wire or fishing line on the end of a pole; lantern walking, which involves searching habitat on foot at night; and road cruising, which refers to the practice of driving along a road slowly in search of reptiles or amphibians that are crossing the road or basking on the road surface. General herping can take place any time, anywhere, whereas road herping or "cruising" usually takes place at dawn or dusk, or during rainstorms. Road cruising during rainstorms has a high probability of finding toads or frogs that may be otherwise impossible to find during normal conditions. Herping activities are often recorded ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8534058 ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative, yet could be better.
This was a very helpful book as a guide to the average lifestyle of a rough green snake, however I do feel that some of the information could have been MORE about keeping it as a pet, rather than how it thrives in the wild. Rough Green Snakes are being sold in pet stores now, and there are not many books or articles that clearly specify how to properly take care of them. I had hopes that this book would help by aiding me in the proper care andmaintenance, but it only gave a portion of useful information. ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists (ASIH) is an international organization devoted to the scientific studies of ichthyology (study of fish) and herpetology (study of reptiles and amphibians). The primary emphases of the Society are to increase knowledge about these organisms, to communicate that knowledge through publications, conferences, and other methods, and to encourage and support young scientists who will make future advances in these fields. The programs of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists are part of a global effort to interpret, understand, and conserve the Earth's natural diversity and to contribute to the wise use of natural resources for the long-term benefit of humankind. On December 27, 1913, John Treadwell Nichols published the first issue of Copeia, a scientific journal dedicated to the knowledge of fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Nichols named Copeia to commemorate Edward Drinker Cope, a prominent 19th century ichthyologist and herpetologist. The first edition of Copeia was four pages in length and comprised five articles. In an effort to increase the publication of Copeia and communication among ichthyologists and herpetologists, Nichols met with Henry Weed Fowler and Dwight Franklin in New York City. Together, the three men founded the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists; however, this achievement is often given to Nichols exclusively. By 1923, the Society accommodated approximately fifty members. Furthermore, the length of...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5313569 ... Read more
