1-0 out of 5 stars Not ready for prime time
After reading this book thoroughly, I found 68 major errors of fact, a list of which I have sent to the author. Errors include, for example, statements that the propeller thrust line was angled to direct its slipstream through the rotor disk (p.21), or a given rotor collective pitch change operates in the reverse sense in an autorotating (Autogiro) rotor compared to a propulsive (helicopter) rotor (p.41). Such errors, and there are plenty more where they came from, clearly indicate Ord-Hume does not understand the subject on which he writes.

The book frequently presents speculation as fact, draws unsupportable conclusions, contradicts itself in different discussions of the same event, and makes statements clearly disproved by accompanying illustrations, among other failings. Overall, the book comes across as a rough draft clearly not ready for prime time.

Ord-Hume is apparently an aviation writer "of great repute" and references all the right people and publications through the course of "Autogiro". How he arrived at the mess that is this book is a question best left for him to answer. The best course of action Ord-Hume can take to protect his reputation is to collect and destroy every copy of this book that he can find.

As is quite common with much to do with the Autogiro, individuals who are expert in a particular aspect of aviation attempt to extend that expertise into this subject matter. "Autogiro" clearly shows the results of such an attempt when not thoroughly researched, checked, and presented.

Editorial Review

Product Description
While many available texts cover some aspect of simulation, this book is unique in that it brings all the tools required to write a flight simulation mathematical model together in one reference. As one reviewer of the text stated, the breadth of material in this book will make it valuable for a wide range of engineering applications, not simply simulation. The organization of the book makes it the perfect reference guide, as chapter after chapter follows a logical build-up to a complete aircraft model. The book begins with a discussion that focuses the reader on the types of flight simulation that are possible. From there, chapters are dedicated to vectors, vector resolution and the many axis systems used in helicopter analysis. A brief chapter on atmospheric modeling precedes a critical section devoted to the importance of establishing the distinction between inertial velocity, wash velocity and aerodynamic velocity. After these chapters have built the foundation for aerodynamics and dynamics, the rotorcraft is modeled from simple components up to more complex systems with chapters dedicated to each of the following: fuselage, wings, propellers, rotors, engines, drive systems, landing gear, controls and aerodynamic coupling. The final chapters describe overall organization and informational flow, and methods to trim the aircraft to initial states. In all, the book holds 18 chapters and 12 appendices along with accompanying problem sets, a solutions manual, and demonstration programs on a CD-ROM. The demonstration programs, written in Visual Basic, serve as a tie-in between chapters and offer a real asset to the reader. One reviewer of the text put it this way, they bring the equations to life. Finally, the text offers an appendix of humorous axioms and observations about flight. As the author explains, Some of the wisdom of the flying ages is presented here, partly for amusement, partly because pilots that will fly your simulators all know the pearls, and partly because you'll need to learn them the easy way if you intend to learn to fly.Dreier goes on to explain the inclusion of these fun notes by saying...It is my belief that one will get more from one's job if the job is enjoyable. If you are a student or currently working in the field or rotorcraft analysis, this is an essential addition to your reference library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PTom's a Ptop Drawer Ptero!
Tom is a gem. He's one of the few people who has written of Coast Guard Aviation who knows that of which he speaks, having been there and done it.This is not to disparage the various historians and popular authors such as Sebastian Junger who have tried to get a handle on what it is we do, but we Pterodactyls are a tight-lipped bunch to outsiders. But Tom is one of us, and we're glad he blabbed. He has done a meticulous study of Frank Erickson and the evolution of the search & rescue helicopter and the mundane, but necessary innovations such as the rescue hoist.Without the machinations that Frank went through, rescue at sea would be a very different business today. Many people do not understand that the United States Coast Guard INVENTED hoisting people from the water.Frank was brilliant, uncredited, and unknown, outside of CG Aviation. He was disdained by the seaplane community in the CG during his lifetime. The passage of time has proven Frank right. In his book, Tom grasped and articulated the struggle that Frank went through proving his theories and nicely packaged Igor Sikorsky's vision for the helicopter as a tool for humanitarian service.Even my non-flying friends enjoyed the book...which I recommend when they ask what the heck it is that I do for a living.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and inlighening about Coast Guard aviation
This book kept me interested thru out. The story of LT Frank Erickson is one of persistance and will. I felt the books ending is what really made it all come together "The Sum of All dreams".The story of Michael Odom is a book within itself. This autor really did his home work and left me understanding the importance of helicopters and the U.S. Coast Guard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong-willed officers advance the cause of whirly birds.
U. S. Coast Guard aviator,Lt. Frank Erickson,on December 7, 1941, saw sailors struggling in the waters of Pearl Harbor. He remembered an article about a small helicopter developed by Igor Sikorsky.Erickson felt here was the ideal rescue tool for the U.S. Coast Guard aviators to help those in distress. From this time forward Erickson worked toward this goal.In the end,it cost him his career.Erickson ran head-long into those officers who felt seaplanes were the ideal rescue device. The book traces the struggle to have the helicopter accepted by the U.S. Coast Guard. One of the interesting currents running through the book is that of strong-willed officers fighting for a cause and willing to sacrifice their careers to advance it. This is one of those rare histories that show the contributions the U.S. Coast Guard has made to naval history. The book is recommended to anyone interested in military and naval history, either in or out of aviation. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Dissappointing
I was very much dissappointed in this purchase.
It was not of the level I was looking for especially when it is a Syllabus book for studies with my Civil Aviation Authority. This is basic reading and seems to go way off track into turbines half way through the book. There are missing topics of importance with regards to the reciprocating engines.

Try and review in a bookstore first but it does not meed the Grade for PPL Exams. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A well-written book about HelicoptersVietnam
I find this to be a well-written little book about both the training, and the combat flying, for/in the Vietnam War.While striving to remain factual (and documenting embellished stories), Bill Heilman manages to mix in a bit of humor, including a joke or two on himself. This book really helps me to better understand the huge amount of training required in order to actually pilot a chopper in combat, and the skills and nerve required to ferry men and materials into and out of combat zones, even under artillary attack.Interesting, easy (& at times technical), serious, and yet at times humerous, reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Devon is Crazy about the Rescue Helicopter
My son Devon loves this nice little Tonka book by Scholastic. The book starts out what a helicopter pilot introducing himself, telling how he flies the rescue helicopter. He shows how the levers work to make the plane go up and down, sideways and to even hover in place. While the pilot is telling about the chopper, he gets a call from the emergency dispatcher. There is a fire, someone is injured, the rescue helicopter gets them to the hospital. Oh no, a girl has falling off a cruise ship. Again the emergency helicopter is called into action. Then, when this emergency is handled, again the helicopter is called to duty, a hurricane has devastated a community, and so it goes as still another emergency is taken care of, then another. This is a perfect book if you have a little boy, or even a girl. Tonka builds great toys, they make great books too.

This book is an invaluable color photo history of the USAF during its first fifteen years as a separate branch of the service (1947-62). The photos are in many cases personal snapshots collected by the author from various people as well as photos by famous photographers such as William T. Larkins. As a former USAF pilot and avid model builder, I find this book to be a treasure-trove of information on colors and markings, types flown and by what units, and just a wonderful trip back to a glorious period in Air Force history. A must-have for the true aviation historian.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect companion
This is the perfect book for anyone who operates a smaller theater. Since I have purchased this book I have produced a few shows based soley on the suggestions of the author.

This book is easy to use. Clear. And the suggestions are intelligent and accurate.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who a) operates a theater/is on a theater board. b)theater geeks. There are shows here you've probably never thought of. c) independents who are looking to produce a musical of their own.

This guide gives you:
1. Cast list
2. Song list
3. Pros/cons of doing the show
4. set suggestions (i.e. unit set/2 int)
5. who you can request the rights through
6. alternate versions of some shows

I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great little read
This is a great read for people involved in amateur or community theatre especially those faced with the endless problem of what to stage next.

The writer offers some useful advice and lists some of the pitfalls some people or companies will fall into when tackling some musicals.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but lacks important information
Denny Martin Flinn presents a very good book about little known musical theatre works and provides the reader with a clear a concise overview of many shows. However, what is lacking - and most important - is what the shows call for in the way of musicians. Book provides nice info as far as synopsis, original cast, musical numbers, licensing, and some difficulties/advantages, but what about the size of the orchestra? Why is it that in a "Musical" the instrumentalists are always the first to be cut (or reduced) but last to be considered? It's first and foremost a musical, not play and this information should be considered along with sets, costumes, and props. Perhaps in a future edition Mr. Flinn can add this most important of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for small theatres!
It's been years since I've directed so I wanted to start with something small.Being a musical theatre aficionado I would love to direct a musical again. This book is a fantastic resource for smaller theatres without access to crazy special effects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Over a hundred small musicals which any theatre can produce
Over a hundred small musicals which any theatre can produce is packed into a guide which uses the background of its experienced Broadway producer author to select among the few musicals that have small casts and can be performed on a budget. Most musicals rely on glitz and expensive production eye-catchers for effects and drama, so it's especially refreshing to see a focus returned to the stage itself. Chapters serve as a reference to these selected productions focusing on synopsis, outlining musical numbers, acts, and pros and cons of production.

Product Description

A young boy has all sorts of wishes for Santa, but what would Christmas really be like if Santa marched to a different drummer? Endearing pictures and a fanciful story suggest the delightful possibilities.

Christmas is coming, and Maxie has wishes. “Mommy, I wish Santa would come by helicopter.” So begins a loving, charmingly illustrated give-and-take between a boy and his mother, in which his fantasies run wild and she sweetly brings him back to reality again. When he hopes that Santa will help them trim their tree, Mom wonders: “Then, Maxie, who would trim Santa’s tree?” When he longs to have Santa join them for dinner, Mama points out that a jolly, roly-poly man and his 8 reindeer would eat quite a lot. But, of course, holiday dreams do come true, and maybe, on Christmas morn, Santa will be there.
