Product Description
In the second half of the twentieth century, increasing efforts were made towards containing and cleaning contaminated groundwater. A number of techniques can be used to achieve such goals, traditionally either by treating or isolating the soil in situ, or by removing it for washing or disposal. However, such technologies tend to be accompanied by high energy consumption, and can lead to new environmental problems. Therefore, more efficient and economical techniques are needed to remediate contaminated soil and groundwater. ... Read more

Product Description
This work arose from research results of the interdisciplinary centre for scientific computing at the University of Heidelberg as well as of the Humboldt University. The contribution of this work is the simulation of contaminated ground water developed from models about the disposal of severely contaminated material, i.e. radioactive fuels or chemical waste products. The model is based on equations for convection-diffusion-dispersion reactions. The equation in the present book is used for the modelling of a radionuclide transport of pollutants in ground water as well as for chemical irreversible reactions. While solving such problems, so-called multi-scale processes arise. Conventional treatment of black-box discretisation and solution methods are impossible or complicated. Hence, physically motivated methods are used, i.e. to integrate one-dimensional analytical solutions of convection-reaction equations. Especially so-called decomposition methods were emphasized. These methods decouple the different scales and solve the equations based on scales with each other. Therefore the previous coupling errors between the terms of the equations can be controlled and minimised with iterative methods. Furthermore, analytical solutions could be used for comparisons with the numerical solutions. In this work the theoretical derivations of solutions as well as their application in numerical methods for realistic calculations could be acquired. The methods were assembled in a program package that had been developed in a project to evolve a program for modelling the transport of pollutants in ground water. Some realistic damage events could be calculated based on dates from the partner GRS in Braunschweig, Germany. ... Read more

Product Description
Most large urban centres lie in coastal regions, which are home to about 25 per cent of the world's population. The current coastal urban population of 200 million is projected to almost double in the next 20 to 30 years. This expanding human presence has dramatically changed the coastal natural environment. To meet the growing demand for more housing and other land uses, land has been reclaimed from the sea in coastal areas in many countries, including China, Britain, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States. Coastal areas are often the ultimate discharge zones of regional ground water flow systems. The direct impact of land reclamation on coastal engineering, environment and marine ecology is well recognised and widely studied. However, it has not been well recognised that reclamation may change the regional groundwater regime, including groundwater level, interface between seawater and fresh groundwater, and submarine groundwater discharge to the coast. This book first reviews the state of the art of the recent studies on the impact of coastal land reclamation on ground water level and the seawater interface.Steady-state analytical solutions based on Dupuit and Ghyben-Herzberg assumptions have been derived to describe the modification of water level and movement of the interface between fresh groundwater and saltwater in coastal hillside or island situations. These solutions show that land reclamation increases water level in the original aquifer and pushes the saltwater interface to move towards the sea. In the island situation, the water divide moves towards the reclaimed side, and ground water discharge to the sea on both sides of the island increases. After reclamation, the water resource is increased because both recharge and the size of aquifer are increased. This book then derives new analytical solutions to estimate groundwater travel time before and after reclamation. Hypothetical examples are used to examine the changes of groundwater travel time in response to land reclamation. After reclamation, groundwater flow in the original aquifer tends to be slower and the travel time of the groundwater from any position in the original aquifer to the sea becomes longer for the situation of coastal hillside. For the situation of an island, the water will flow faster on the unreclaimed side, but more slowly on the reclaimed side. The impact of reclamation on groundwater travel time on the reclaimed side is much more significant than that on the unreclaimed side. The degree of the modifications of the groundwater travel time mainly depends on the scale of land reclamation and the hydraulic conductivity of the fill materials. ... Read more

Product Description

Empowering people, reducing poverty, improving livelihoods and promoting economic growth, while at the ensuring sustainable ecosystems, requires local, appropriate and widely replicable solutions. In the search for these, poor sanitation and poor water supply are major drivers in cycles of disease, poverty and powerlessness which avoid people in developing nations to escape poverty. Sustainable water supply is not only a matter of groundwater and sanitation-technical solutions, but as much implies tackling major issues concerning hydro-social and public health components. The African continent, has lagged behind other regions in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in water supply and sanitation, and continues to be a much neglected water resource. This volume disseminates investigations and pointers towards achieving sustainable groundwater supplies in challenging local community environments across the African continent. The first part presents the search integrated water, sanitation, hygiene delivery and best implementation practice. The second part, through a variety of case studies, illustrates the current status and pitfalls that hydrogeologists experience and highlights the relevant challenges that especially Sub-Saharan Africa still faces in this battle. The chapters present the current situation, best practices, challenges identified and directions developed by the authors in their advancement towards comprehensive solutions. For anyone involved with the development of water supply and sanitation in developing countries.

Product Description
FROM THE PREFACE: This book attempts to combine two separate themes: a description of one of the links in the chain of the water cycle inside the earth's crust i.e., the subsurface flow; and the quantification of the various types of this flow, obtained by applying the principles of fluid mechanics in porous media. The first part is the more descriptive, and geological of the two. It deals with the concept of water resources, which then leads us on to other links in the cycle: rainfall, infiltration, evaporation. runoff, and surface water resources. The second part is necessary in order to quantify ground water resources. It points the way to other applications, such as solutions to civil engineering problems including drainage and compaction; and transport problems in porous media, including aquifer pollution by miscible fluids, multiphase flow of immiscible fluids, and heat transfer in porous media, i.e., geothermal problems. However, the qualitative and the quantitative aspects are not treated separately but combined and blended together, just as geology and hydrology are woven together in hydrogeology. ... Read more

Product Description
In the past decades, environmental scientists, economists andphysicists have been juggling critical issues within environmentalstrategies and environmental management styles in order to find afeasible medium between limited resources, long term demands andobjectives, and interest groups. In the search for best managementalternatives, practice has undergone a pendulum swing between stagesthat can be characterised as frontier economics, radicalenvironmentalism, resource management/allocation, selectiveenvironmentalism and sustainable environmental management. The nextstage of management must answer such questions as: `Can there be aglobal -- uniform environmental strategy?', or `Based on theircharacteristics, can different issues, different regions and differentapplications have unique environmental strategies?' Based on thispremise, the next stage of management may be identified as risk basedsustainable environmental management. The goal of this style will bethe risk based, long term, harmonious management of economic resourcesand environmental preservation for health, safety and prosperity ofsustainable populations. When evaluation of risk or risk based rankingof management alternatives enter the picture as part of the overallpuzzle, then social policy, ethics and health issues assume a veryimportant role in the management strategy. Economic incentives andenvironmental constraints have to be considered harmoniously, the mainemphasis being placed on protection and preservation of human healthand the long term sustaining of populations. ... Product Description
As we transition into the 21st century, it is apparentthat this is an exciting time for environmental engineers andscientists studying remediation technologies. There has been a rapiddevelopment of new ways to clean-up polluted groundwater. Researchactivities of the past and next 10 years will have a dramatic impacton the quality of the subsurface environment for the next century. In20, or even 10 years from now, our approach to subsurface remediationwill probably be vastly different than it is today. Many of theemerging technologies presented in this book will form the basis ofstandard remediation practices of the future.

Physicochemical Groundwater Remediation presents detailedinformation on multiple emerging technologies for the remediation ofthe contaminated subsurface environment. All of these technologiesapply our knowledge of physical and chemical processes to clean upground water and the unsaturated zone, and many (if not all) of theseemerging technologies will help define standard practices in thefuture. These technologies include in situ sorptive and reactivetreatment walls, surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation, optimizationanalyses for remediation system design, chemical, electrochemical, andbiochemical remediation processes, and monitored natural attenuation.

You will learn how palladium catalyzes the dehalogenation ofchlorinated solvents. You will find out how barometric pumping cannaturally remove significant quantities of volatile organic pollutantsfrom shallow ground water and the unsaturated zone. You can learnabout mobilizing non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) without riskingsignificant downward migration of the NAPL. You can find out howprocesses such as electroosmosis and electromigration can be exploitedfor groundwater remediation purposes and how zero-valent iron andzeolite treatment walls can be used in situ to treat and controlcontaminant plume migration. Contributors to this book are experts ingroundwater remediation processes, and they represent industry, consulting, academia, and government.

If your work involves the clean up of contaminated soil andgroundwater, this book is an essential reference to keep you up todate on the most promising new developments in remediation research. ... Read more
