Product Description

Natural saline water, waste water, and irrigation return flow endanger the groundwater aquifers in the Rift. In the long run this will ruin the socio-economic backbone of the settlements in the area. Sustainability of the water resources will only be achieved when the process of water replenishment and its underground flow is understood and water extraction is regionally controlled. Rare earth element and spider patterns are presented as new tools for studying the hydrology. Progress in 3-D modelling of groundwater flow proved successfully the impact of pumping on the surroundings of wells and overexploitation of aquifers.

Product Description
Understanding the issues that have been encountered at other sites, and the steps that have led to successful resolution of these issues, can provide great help to those considering, planning, or implementing new groundwater recharge projects. Recent technical advances and operational experience have demonstrated that well recharge is a feasible and cost effective method of artificially recharging natural aquifers. This practical guide reviews the technical constraints and issues that have been addressed and resolved through research and experience at many sites. The book presents aquifer storage recovery (ASR) technology and traces its evolution over the past 25 years in the United States. Procedures for groundwater recharge are presented, and selected case studies are examined. Drinking water quality standards and conversion factors are provided in the appendix for easy reference. ... Product Description

Given that around 50% of the worlds population live in cities, and that urban populations are expanding rapidly, the issues are important and becoming increasingly urgent. To reduce the effects of such impacts, management is required irrespective of whether the groundwater is to be used or not. This management must be based on a sound technical understanding of the interacting processes involved. The forty papers in this volume explore the state of this understanding in the context of a wide range of countries (and therefore cultures), climates, and geologies. They are divided into topic areas covering flow, chemical water quality, biological water quality, remediation, engineering, and socio-economics. An initial section sets the scene with a range of integrated regional-scale studies. The volume provides an insight into groundwater issues for other urban specialists, including planners: without communication between the disciplines involved, progress towards acceptable urban sustainability will be slow.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3D-Groundwater Modeling with PMWIN
PMWIN is a robust simulation system capable of modeling groundwater flow and solute transport. It is easy to use and import figures of differing formats. The GUI (graphical user interface) is user friendly. The text presents all the information, graphics and illustrations of the GUI making it easy to understand and use.I highly recommend this program.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3D-Groundwater Modeling with PMWIN
I was using earlier version of pmwin and 3-d visualisation was missing. Therefore I always in preferred to work with Visual Modflow with 3-D explorer and GMS. Now using version 5 of PMWIN with 3-D explorer, I was thrilled. Really it is wounderful and quite simple. I do not find it is less than other counter part Commercial Software. Its 3-D explorer is better than Visual Modflow 3-d explorer.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent primary text with latest software from start 2 end
To learn the groundwater modeling techniques, the students or the professionals needthe suitable software and the textbook which explaines clearly the theory and the used software. The book must explaine the procedures step by step and from start to to the end.But nowadays, if you have not enough money to purchase the commercial modflow based software, it is a pity that you have to learn MODFLOW codes. It was the undesriable things.Hydrogeological modeling means interpretation. But there is no possibility to see visual something among the codes.I created the input and as a result output errors during the simulations with codes at the beginning. There is a good words in computer technology; Gap In Gap Out.It summurizes the best what i meant.Definitely all hydrogeologists have to know all background informations on groundwater modeling techniques and the structure of used softwares. But i think, groundwater modeling is more than a science, it is a art which must have a visual effect. So that I have looked for the best groundwater modeling book and the software since 1991.At the end, i have found, what i have ever looked for. This is this book which combines the latest modeling techniques and the latest modeling software. You can learn the latest modeling techniques written by the leading teaching experts and creators of PMWIN.This 344 pages textbook walks the practising engineers or students through the modeling process from start to finish. You don't need any other additional tool. This book has also the best groundwater modeling and contaminant transport modeling software. Especially it is the best learning asistance with example problems for the students and practising professionals.

With PMWIN ,groundwater modeling has never been so easy.It is more than a pre and post processor of MODFLOW family (88,96 or 2000);it is a great modeling environment in which you can find what you needed. You can also realize your all modeling and contaminant transport dreams with using all MOC3D, MT3D, PHT3D or RT3D family ( it was a dream for me ).

PMWIN is an advanced environment which has a digitizer, field interpolater, field generator and environment for the background images or dxf files. You can import vector or raster based images...create your own georeferenced background maps. You can interpolate your datas by using FIELDinterpolater and export your kriging results just in a minute with field generator. You can find 4 different interpolation methos. The most complex 3D preprocessing, such as surface or layer property routines take max.30 minutes. You can enter your values to cells, either in cell by cell method or in zonal method or using interchange options from the field interpolater program.

The PMWIN has a preference options the simulation can be performed either with MODFLOW 88,96 or 2000.The all datas will be controlled by the PMWIN, if needed you will be directed for the deficit inputs. After the modflow simulation has finished, the RESULTextractor gets your results in a matrix dialog. If you prefer to open your datas in an other application such as SURFER, it is also possible, you can export your matrix result. PMWIN creates two output files; one of them USGS's *.nam file, the other is the PMWIN's *.pm5 file. For example if you have only GE, you can also visualize your modflow code simulation results in GE environment because GE reads the modflows *.nam files.

If you have GE (it is an optional, low cost 3D visualization tool.It is the cheapest, the best and the easiest tool in the industry).I have tried the all other visulalzation tools, GE is the best, GE is the simple. If you wonder about the prices, it app.250 USD.The most complex and troublous datas will be shown so clearly in 2 minutes.PMWIN and GE or some other add on modules work seamlessly and perfect. The author and the programmer Prof.Wen-Hsing CHAING had thought everything.I have examined PMWIN with the most complex problems, the program has never stooped or the operating system has never collapsed. The PMWIN 5.1.7 permits 250.000 cells but with MF2K add on modules it can be reached up 640.000 cells. Again no problem, no colapse in system. If your operating system is stable, it works so unique.

If you are an unexperienced modeler or beginner,it is not problem. After one or two day with this book; definitely you will become more familiar. It is so simple that the visualization processes take just 2 minutes...you can create your own animations and import your animation scenes in many digital formats such as *.BMP,*.GIF and modify there and present.

With some additional add on modules which have been created again by the Authors of the book, you can merge with other modeling tools such as RT3D or PHT3D.I have contacted to Prof.wen-Hsing CHAING and learned that there will be a lot of add on modules...one of them is the surface water/groundwater interaction modules.I have also learned that GE will be used for the presentation of the surface waters and the meteorological datas. It means, PMWIN will be the best software in this industry. Many of the commercial modflow processors are still using Modflow 96. The MODFLOW 2000, PEST-ASP and the late version of the UCODE had been added in April 2001 to PMWIN.And it works without any problem since April 2001. I have contacted and got more additional information about the PMWIN and the book. I am gratefull to Prof.Kinzelbach and Prof.Wen-Hsiang CHAING who has written 3D GROUNDWATER MODELING WITH PMWIN and created, developed the PMWIN, GE and MODFLOW 2000 add on modules.I have found the best software and the best TEXTBOOK.This book is really excellent and can be advised both to the students, practical engineers and advanced groundwater modelers, as a compherensive guide to modeling and complete the exercises to refresh their knowledges. And also... Especially for the professors , this book will be an excellent primary text for a university course, or as asupplement to an existing curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars A recommandable book and software for groundwater modeling
PMWIN is an excellent software for the simulation of groundwater flow and transport. This comprehensive software makes it easy to setup own groundwater problems. It comprises a lot of additional programs and useful tools which help to describe and analyse a problem very clearly. For example, a model for the simulation of single and multi-species transport is included as well as the full version of PEST, the famous code for parameter estimation. Many features facilitate showing and printing of the results. The book contains a lot of elucidations and examples. Some features are still in development but should be released soon, like 3D visualization and geochemical model. Alltogether a very recommandable book and software.

4-0 out of 5 stars Science, Nature, and Morality Clash in this Must Read Book
The Epsilon Eridani Alternative by Beth Groundwater explores issues we face today such as the abuse of the resources Earth provides in this intriguing tale about a group of people sent to settle on a new planet with the hopes it will provide salvation for the people of Earth. When the couples find the cryogenics used to slow their aging didn't work, the hope of populating the new planet with human beings is dashed. The colonists also realize communicating back to Earth the results of their findings will take too long. The colonists begin experimenting with the stem cells from the planet's inhabitants to restore the colonists' youth until unexpected consequences occur.Groundwater creates a world filled with characters the reader will alternately like and dislike, agree with and disagree with, root for and root against because of their complexity. Her exploration of the issues within the pages is both insightful and balanced. The reader will question the decisions the characters make on both sides of the issues they are facing. The Epsilon Eridani Alternative is a fast, enjoyable read by an author who is both skilled and talented.

4-0 out of 5 stars A thought provoking novel
Like modern Rip Van Winkles, the characters in this scifi novel wake from their space journey to find themselves considerably aged. Now too old to reproduce, and having lost the stem cells they were transporting, they face a terrible dilemma. This is a futuristic, but credible story, and the concepts are almost within reach of present day scientists. A lot to think about, here.

4-0 out of 5 stars A rivetting sci-fi novel
In Beth Groundwater's intelligent Sci-fi novel,a group of astronauts have landed on another planet, and face a terrible realisation. They have all aged by thirty years.Thisgroup of young people are transformed and soon have to wrestle with all the ageing processes, including the possibility of dementia.Once they realise how they can rejuvenate themselves they are presented with a dilemma, which is as difficult as knowing that their physical and mental faculties are going to let them down.

Filled with suspense and likeable people, with whom one cannot help but empathise, I thoroughly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic groundwater hydrology from an engineers perspective
I have taken groundwater hydrology from professors with a mining engineering, civil engineering, and geology back ground. These groups can all have different ways of approaching the subject. This book definitely represents the engineers view of saturated subsurface flow.

This book is one of the first and the few that goes into conformal mapping. As such, this book should be on the library shelf for geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, and other groundwater professionals.

The pollution of groundwater as a result of soil pollution haslong been treated as a minor problem, either because the necessaryanalytical apparatus was not available or because the extent of thepollution has been largely underestimated. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very well targeted
I suspect regarding some of the negative (1 star) reviews this book has received a bit of guerrilla marketing.

This is an excellent text on the subject and easy to read.It is far less confusing than most texts on the subject and makes a perfect text for upper undergraduate or graduate level geochem classes. It's a shame it is out of print at the moment. For presenting geochem in an understandable light, it is far Superior to some of the more popular texts.

It is unfortunate that acceptable texts in this subject for the advanced undergraduate or graduate have become so hard to find.If Drever comes back into print, I would recommend giving it a good look.

BTW, this is not a "do it yourself" book as some may surmise, it is a text that, while easy to understand, is best with a professor/staff/faculty member as a guide.

1-0 out of 5 stars Geochemistry of Natural Waters
I had used this text book for a graduate class in Chemical Hydrogeology while doing my Masters.I found this to be a very poor text to use.The textbook presents a very qaulitative approach to geochemistry of natural waters and does not lend itself to quanititative problem solving.I purchased other texts on ths subject so that I could cross-reference and determine how to setup problems for equilibrium chemistry.I would not recommend use of this text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs Work
This book does not lend itself to an introductory class in geochemistry for the graduate student. The material does not present comprehensive derivations of calculations, but relies on prior knowledge and assumption not generally available,or known by the graduate student first being introduced to Geochemistry. The majority of the book is normally only comprehensable to the student after the material has been described by persons knowledgable in the subject mater. In other word this book is worthless to read prior to the lecture on the subject mater.Furthermore, the appendices are full of errors and contradictions to other references, and the book has numerous typos and difficult language constructs that make the text incomprehensible at times.I hope there is a better book for the introductory graduate class in geochemistry out there, because this book does not cut it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Reference for Aqueous Geochemistry Concepts
Drever's has long been a valuable reference in my own work and in the classes I teach. It is one of several references I use for understanding geochemical processes. The first sentence of the preface states that the text is intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses. I first used this text when I took Aqueous Geochem in grad school and it really made a difference in understanding applications. Spend an hour with Stumm and Morgan and then look at Drever. You'll almost see the lightbulb go on over your head. The example calculations are great and the addition of the geochemical models enhance the applicability of the text.

However, I would note that if you need to start with introductory chemical concepts this isn't the book for you.

If you are weak in chemistry start elsewhere.

Still... two thumbs up from this reviewer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Action-packed and full of chases
When I first picked up "To Hell in a Handbasket," I thought it had all the requirements of a good cozy mystery--a great title, a protagonist with a quirky occupation (she makes gift baskets), and a synopsis that sounded like cozy mystery heaven. Now that I've finished the book, I believe that I would label it more a thriller than a cozy. Why? From the first page to the last, amateur sleuth and gift basket designer extraordinaire Claire Hanover is chasing and being chased by bad guys--really bad guys. I envisioned this book would be about a little old lady who sits at home and solves mysteries using clues she finds in gift baskets. Not so! Right from the start, Claire is tumbled into the apparent murder of her daughter's friend on a ski slope. From there, the action goes uphill (and downhill, as the characters chase each other around on the Colorado ski slopes). Claire not only tries to help a local detective solve the young woman's murder, but she becomes embroiled in several more deaths, and must work frantically to prevent additional murders. There are numerous chases, gun fights, dead bodies, kidnappings, captures, and all sorts of excitement that, to me, suggest that this book would make a great action/adventure movie--or at least a television movie of the week. Personally, I prefer a quieter, more cerebral cozy mystery--where the heroine solves the crime after the fact from the comfort of her own home. However, for those of you who like lots of action in your mysteries--this one is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Snowy Danger

Reading Beth Groundwater's TO HELL in a HANDBASKET during the Winter Olympics felt like just the perfect time for this Cozy-Mystery. Claire Hanover, a Gift Basket sleuth, and her husband, Roger, and daughter, Judy, live in Colorado. Knowing how to ski is like knowing how to bike down to the corner store. It is just a daily part of life. Sadly, snow, skis and snow mobiles become an ugly place for murder and sorrow too. Judy witnesses the death ofNick's sister while skiing a trail. Nick is Judy's boyfriend.

Boy, it was painful to read about Stephanie's life cut short in a quick matter of moments.. Before too long I had to stick close to Claire because she really got herself in dangerous situations trying to solve the whole messy, bloody situation. While sleuthing, Claire seemed to always overhear what she was not meant to hear. At least, she seemed able to work well with Owen the sheriff. She didn't get in his way too much. Secondly, she would report to him what she had discovered to help the investigation come to a quick close.

This is one reason I liked TO HELL IN A HANDBASKET. It was really different reading about an amateur sleuth who does not bark at or get smart with the police and detectives constantly to make a point. Claire knows how to dig around for the truth in a smooth, polite way. However, Claire can melt when it comes to sudden and bloody deaths, but she holds her own. I like her strong spirit. Don't cave until you've gotten the truth.

She also knows how to keep her man happy.I loved it when Roger and she would steal a romantic moment. I also like Claire, the heroine, because she's a tiger when it comes to protecting her daughter, Judy. Come Russian mobs or guns and rifles Claire is going to save her daughter from becoming a victim of crime. She does become rather snippy with Owen, the sheriff at times. She does not bite her tongue when it comes to telling him she is not going to wait around for the phone to ring or twiddle her thumbs when her daughter is in danger. Claire wants all hands on deck including her hands. Her number one desire is to protect her daughter. Claire's a true blue, Annie Oakley mom.

Even when it comes to riding a snow mobile to find Judy Claire rides one. Really, this is a fantastically brave move because Claire has a phobia of riding snow mobiles. Her friend's son died riding one of those "dangerous machines." This must have happened in the first Claire Hanover cozy. I am definitely going back to read the first book. A few juicy tidbits are dropped in this second book about the first book.

I also enjoyed this cozy because of the craft theme in the background. At times I wanted to stop reading, go to the craft store and pick up pretty colored items like stationery and pens, a little raffia, a little leather to make up a basket for a friend. She makes one basket almost too huge for Roger to carry to the person.

I thought Leon, the gangster, was a hoot along with his driver and bodyguard. Claire proved she was an all around person when she spent time teaching Leon to ski in order to get more information about the killer or killers ofa few people in the community.

TO HELL in a HANDBASKET is the best Cozy-Mystery I have read this year. "It is so totally all that" as young people would say.

To Hell in a Handbasket - Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat

What will a wife do to protect her husband? In A Real Basket Case Claire sets out to prove that she didn't sleep with her physical trainer and her husband didn't kill him when he found him straddling her in bed. There was nothing she wouldn't do to prove her and his innocence.

What will a mother do to protect her only daughter? In To Hell in a Handbasket Claire again refuses to let anything nor anyone stand in her way to prevent her daughter Judy from being kidnapped, or worse... murdered.

Claire, Rodger and Judy Hanover are on a much needed ski vacation in Breckenridge, CO. Judy's boyfriend, Nick Contino, his mother, father and sister Stephanie have joined them. What was supposed to be a relaxing couple of weeks went sour quickly when Stephanie has a skiing accident that takes her life. Was it really an accident? Claire believes not. And to prove her theory she tracks down the only person that actually saw what really happened. The information given to her by this young man not only puts herself into danger, it also makes Judy the killer's next target.

I stayed on the edge of my seat as I followed Claire and Detective Owen Silverstone as they uncover the mystery of Stephanie's death. As they uncover what really goes on behind closed doors in the Contino's study. As they fit the puzzle pieces together after finding that the Russian mob is heavily involved with everything that has taken place, which includes a plan to kidnap Judy.

I loved Beth Groundwater's style of writing when I read A Real Basket Case. After reading To Hell in a Handbasket I can have to say that "what I thought couldn't get better did." For a real mystery teaser, I recommend both books, in the order they were written... A Real Basket Case and To Hell in a Handbasket.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Kind of Hero
I've just finished reading the second Claire Hanover mystery, and I'd have to say Beth Groundwater's main character really is strong enough to keep my interest through a whole series. A fascinatingly resourceful amateur detective, with the cleverness of Miss Marple, the sore knees of the middle-aged, and the physical prowess of an empty-nester who plans to keep skiing forever, Claire has the confidence to believe what she sees and to tell it like she sees it. Just because no one else saw the ski tracks doesn't mean they're not there. Just because no one else sees the danger doesn't mean she shouldn't protect her daughter. Just because...

So she walks into police stations and describes exactly the sort of details that someone unaccustomed to such places would notice--the presence or absence of family photographs, the pictures on the walls... She walks into a night club and learns the right words for the music by making mistakes--okay, so daughter's embarrassed, but Mom's taking charge. She leaps into action, rightly earning the nickname Mama Bear. And the reader follows along, all the time amazed and impressed and, if you happen to be me, just plain wishing I were more like her.

I guess Claire's kind of a niche hero, perfect for us moms with kids fleeing the nest, and ideal for the recipients of gift baskets. She makes me want to ski again. She believes in ibuprofen. She's real and she's fun. And she's more than capable of leaving me eagerly awaiting her next adventure.
