Product Description
Over the last few years, governments and development agencies have provided access to information and communication technology (ICT) with the intention to improve living conditions in underserved communities around the world. Unfortunately, how the ICT tools are used and the information they convey is exploited have not received enough attention. Through a holistic-multiple case study design, this book describes how individuals living in six rural communities in the northern Peruvian Andes use (or not) computers. An interpretive analysis informed by grounded theory reveals the mechanisms by which computer-mediated information is obtained and disseminated by those who use computers. These social actors are named here as ¿activators of information¿ and their role in disseminating fresh and valuable information is thoroughly explained. This book will be a valuable addition to government officials, donors and professionals working in the ICT for development field. Likewise, researchers interested in the application of grounded theory will benefit from the systematic application of the method for the data analysis in an inductive fashion. ... Read more

Product Description
A case study approach was used to explore the interactions of students during an extracurricular educational theatre production. The investigation explored the interaction among students and the role of the play in that interaction. A strong hierarchical community in the tradition of classroom educational hierarchy of age order was found as a hidden curriculum in this activity. Although hegemony was not an objective of the production, seniors were granted priority and powerful leadership positions in lead roles in the play and in posts of responsibility in work groups. In the course of rehearsals, age-ranked cliques emerged causing separation and inequity. Hegemony was encouraged, enhanced, and developed for the benefit of senior students by their drama and music directors. Seniors Rule may indicate how the hierarchical system is learned and upheld in a capitalistic society. ... Read more

Description:
A grounded theory analysis of reasons for driving to work was undertaken following semi-structured interviews with 19 regular private car commuters in a small English city. Five core motives were identified: journey time concerns; journey-based affect; effort minimisation; personal space concerns; and monetary costs. An underlying desire for control underpinned many of these motives. The analysis revealed misconceptions regarding journey times and control in relation to car and public transport use, systematic underestimation of car-related monetary costs, and the importance of self- and identity-relevant consequences in relation to transport policy acceptance. Drivers' motives and misconceptions are discussed in light of transport demand management policies. ... Read more

Product Description
This book presents a grounded theory study of the Australian Film Industry by examining the performance effectiveness of production workers. The issue arose because film workers perceived their rewards to be inadequate and incommensurate with their work efforts. The study looks at career commitment (CC), examining factors that commit workers to their industry. The study finds eight CC factors which work to maintain worker commitment. These factors ? job satisfaction, self-esteem, Hollywood factor, collegiality, autonomy, cost of leaving, volition and roles states ? work individually and in combination to provide worker equity and thus facilitate CC. This research makes a contribution to knowledge in several ways. 1) The research fills a large gap in the research literature. 2) The research provides insights into the role of CC. Together these provide a clear and focused understanding of the role of CC, and its effect on workers. 3) This research provides some practical guidance for managers and may assist them to develop better working relations. 4) This research demonstrates the strengths of using grounded theory for qualitative analysis in an area of organisational studies. ... Description:
Forty-nine participants (24 community mental health clinicians and 25 users of their services) followed a structured set of instructions to create and tell a fictional story. They were then asked how far the fictional story communicated something about their own life situation, and for their subjective reactions to the storymaking process. Their responses to these questions were analysed using Grounded Theory methods to develop a theory of how such a fictional storymaking process might work in a therapeutic setting. The majority of participants described a process of increasing and often surprising relevance with the release of strong emotions. This was accompanied by an increasingly close identification with an initially distant main character in the story. For a minority of participants this close identification never happened and they experienced much fewer emotions and described their stories as less personally relevant. The Grounded Theory analysis proposes that the theme of the development of the story over time is central, and that the responses of both groups can be understood via this model. The proposed model is discussed in relation to existing literature on storytelling in therapy and possible applications of the method are discussed. ... Read more

Description:
The full grounded theory method was used in the present study to investigate nursing leadership in a New Zealand hospital setting. One finding that emerged clearly from the research was the important role played by organizational politics in both facilitating the process of leadership and in confounding it. Data were collected over a two-year period. The range of data sources included nonparticipant observation, informal/unstructured and formal/semistructured interviews, document analysis, and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). Data triangulation within the grounded theory method is a major contribution of this study. Nurse leaders displayed high levels of transformational leadership according to the questionnaire data. However, qualitative analysis of the data suggested that other factors were working to prevent nurse leaders from maximizing organizational change outcomes. Two near-core categories partially explained why transformational nurse leaders were not realizing their leadership potential. One near-core category was the process of repressing leadership, the other was multiple realities. The highest level of abstraction of the data led to the emergence of the substantive basic social process of identifying paradox. Identifying paradox was conceptually very close to the definition of politics in organizational leadership which is the ''constructive management of shared meaning.'' This core category explained the social process by which the staff either legitimize or reconcile paradoxical understandings created from the multiple realities of the three subcultures working in the hospital setting. If paradoxes are identified and reconciled, and multiple realities converge, organizational change efforts are more likely to be accepted by the staff because the change is in line with their reality. Conversely, if paradoxes are not identified and/or legitimized, multiple realities diverge and organizational change efforts are less likely to be accepted by the staff. Findings are interpreted from the political perspective. ... Read more
