Product Description

Backed by the collective knowledge and experience of the world's leading Geographic Information Systems (GIS) company, the concepts and methods presented in this volume will allow users to unleash the full analytic power of their GIS. The most commonly used spatial statistical tools are described in detail along with their applications in a range of disciplines, from crime analysis to habitat conservation. GIS users will learn how features are distributed, how to analyze the pattern created by the features, and how to determine the relationships between them. Four general statistical concepts are discussed, including testing statistical significance, defining spatial neighborhoods and weights, and using statistics with spatial data. Advice on determining which statistical tool to use in a given situation is also provided.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, but what tools?
This book provides a useful introduction to the concepts of measuring spatial distributions, identifying patterns and clusters, and identifying patterns. There is the basic information about how to identify geographic centers with mean and median, and general statistical distributions and tests of significance. The section on identifying clusters was good, but the nearest neighbor hierarchical clustering is only available in Crime stat. One disappointing thing about this book from ESRI, is there is not a mention of what specific ArcGIS toolbox item can be used to generate the statistic. It was also not always clear what analysis made sense for lines, polygons or points.A further discussion of raster analysis and the connection between measures of mean, and some of the raster neighborhood statistics would have been useful. .

5-0 out of 5 stars It works best if you know a little bit of both
This is definitely not a book for advanced users in spatial statistics or a tutorial-based book of how to use spatial statistics in GIS. As the author described at the very beginning, this is an introductory book for people who have used GIS but know very little about statistics. Personally, I think this book works best if you already took your intro to GIS and basic statistic class so you already know a little bit of both. It explains how two of them can work together to solve the questions you have in mind about the real world problems.

Besides the complimentary approach, I give this book five stars because of 1) the writing style is extremely accessible. Even he does not go through all the details on statistics, the author explains the statistic concepts a lot better than any other books I have read for my statistic class. 2) the graphics, including maps and charts, are extremely helpful to compare the concepts and different methods he describes in the book. 3) the comparison between different spatial statistic are very useful if you are puzzled with different spatial statistic tools available in your ArcGIS toolbox when the "Help" is not helpful at all! 4) it gives you various reference if you are interested in exploring specific topics.

If you want to explore your data beyond thematic mapping and want to know whether the patterns you see are statistically significant or not, this is a book that will open the door of spatial statistic to you. If you are a visual person but hate statistics, this book might change that as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars great Book
this is vol 2 that goes with the Tutuorial Vol 2 book - well written and VERY understandable!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great companion textbook
Spatial statistics can be a very cumbersome topic, but Mitchell goes through it in a good, linear fashion. I don't need to know the mathematics behind the statistical methods (although he provides them) I instead want to know when and how the tools are applied.

Even though this is an ESRI book, several of the topics he discusses are actually not available in ArcGIS. It also falls short of showing how to run any particular software package, but that makes it more universal for study with other software.

Now it has the added benefit of having a tutorial book that follows it chapter by chapter ... including the ESRI Guide to GIS Analysis Vol 2. The book is GIS Tutorial II, and you can order it and both Mitchell books bundled into a special price!

GIS Tutorial II: Spatial Analysis Workbook for version 9.3 and
GIS Tutorial 2: Spatial Analysis Workbook for version 10.

2-0 out of 5 stars esri does it again?
Due to ESRI's share of the GIS market, they assume that they have the midas touch when it comes to all things spatial. This book just about sucks. Yes, there are pretty pictures (in this case all from ArcGIS, go figure?) but that doesn't mean it's a masterpiece. The text is very diffucult to decipher. It reads more like a term paper reciting facts poorly; in fact it feels like the author resisted the urge to cut and paste from source publications by obfuscating the ideas with poor style and even poorer word choices. In the wrong hands a thesaurus can be a weapon. A weapon that destroys content. I really tried to read this book, but couldn't get past the first 20 pages. If you want to learn anything about advanced spatial statistics for instance, you should read the books that the author cites, not this book. OK, so what if you wanted to have this book around as a reference item to help you through a specific spatial analysis problem? The Table of Contents is no help at all and the index is pitiful. And once you've found the example you're looking for, it doesn't really show you how to do it, or why it's done for that matter, just an objective description of what it would look like in ArcGIS.

The only good idea behind this book is how it intermixes geographic examples. For instance, it shows urban geography problems side by side with biogeography problems. But again this suffers, mainly due to lay out problems. The visual illustrations seem to be at odds with the text. Oh BTW, the font is cumbersome and the spacing is confusing. There aren't any boxes that highlight important ideas or underlined phrases or shaded areas in the text, there is nothing in the layout to help you learn the material. I'm pretty sure this book was laid out in Word!

With this latest book, ESRI must be banking on those agencies and institutions that can afford to buy ESRI products in the first place, that have a standing order with the company to gobble up all things ESRI.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great GIS infrastructure design book
This book provides information about how to start designing a GIS infrastructure. It explains an information technology infrastructure that includes web, application, and database servers, network protocols, history of GIS, and tools for planning a GIS.This is a great book if you already have an understanding of IT concepts and theories. It's still a good book for someone who wants to learn about GIS/IT infrastructure, but having an understanding before you read this book will help a lot.

By-the-way, ESRI provides a free technical article regarding GIS infrastructure design. However, this book provides excel sheet templates and examples on how to use the excel infrastructure planning tools.

I would recommend this book to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent methodology for building a successful system for GIS
Dave Peters' BUILDING A GIS an excellent methodology for building a successful system for GIS. ESRI customers and managers interested in system architecture design will find it a specific A-Z instructional for creating a GIS framework, reviewing technology and options alike.

1-0 out of 5 stars read some other book if you can
I've read a numerous computer/network related books. This book had by far the worst organization, and unnecessary complexity that i had ever seen. I haven't read other GIS-related books yet, so i cant compare it with other Geographic Information Sys books.
It "might" be good for people who have had a lot of network experience. But its not for those who are novice and less experienced. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The included software package
This is an excellent and relevant book. It is well structured, and the examples are very much practice oriented. However, when I tried to install the included software under Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Prof I failed. Only under Windows 95 it runs!
Did I something wrong or it is just like that!
I would appreciate any helpful comment!

Product Description
Professionals involved in the planning, design, operation, and construction of water, wastewater, and stormwater systems need to understand the productivity-enhancing applications of GIS. Inspired by an ASCE-sponsored continuing education course taught by the author, GIS Applications for Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Systems focuses on the practical aspects of software and data tools that enable GIS applications. The book documents and analyzes effective use of GIS, demonstrating how you can apply the technology to make tasks easier to perform, saving time and money for your organization.

The book first describes GIS, detailing its importance and explaining how to avoid potential pitfalls via a needs analysis study. It then describes GIS-related technologies that are crucial in applications development: remote sensing; DEM data; GPS; Internet applications; and mobile GIS. The final ten chapters focus on the "Four Ms" of the water industry-Mapping, Monitoring, Modeling, and Maintenance-applications that define the most important activities for efficient management of water, wastewater, and stormwater systems.

Promoting a performance- (or outcome-) based style of learning, each chapter first states learning objectives and later concludes with a chapter summary and questions. The text encourages more effective and natural inductive study by first presenting case studies, then explaining procedures. This volume supplements the text with numerous maps, tables, and illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to What's Possible
The development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) over the past few years has been one of the triumphs brought about by more powerful computer hardware, software and big hard drives. Conceptually GIS came about in the 1960 with the ideal of co-registered overlays of what's underground. One layer (or more likely three) covers water (clean, waste, storm), one set covers wiring (power, telephone, cable TV), other layers cover steam, subways, gas distribution, or whatever.

The 1990's saw the more powerful systems being combined with more advanced GIS software that was significantly easier to use. Finally GIS has reached the point where its use in smaller towns, smaller systems is not only practical but almost mandatory.

This book, as the title says, specializes in GIS for Water. It's written about water, for water oriented workers. It uses terminology that is familiar and concentrates on software that is specialized for water use.

Dr. Shamsi is director of the GIS and Information Management Technology for Chester Engineers (Pittsburgh). Chester is a leading-edge engineering and scientific research firm that provides water, wastewater and environmental solutions to public and industrial clients worldwide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Book
My instructor couldn't really help me with what I wanted to do with my project.I started with needing to find a tool to analyze storm water run-off.I found this software, went out to ESRI's website, downloaded ArcHydro, and installed it.ESRI's site had tutorials on how to use the various tools and had other useful information. The book supported the use of these tools by explaining the concepts in more detail.I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in water resources and don't know much about ArcHydro.I also recommend the Handbook of Hydrology.I found that useful too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother....
This book is like many other GIS books: a compilation of case studies. There are no details, techniques, or tutorials provided. The text is accompanied by a CD, but everything on the CD can be downloaded for free from the internet.

This book was required for a class I took and I never even opened it. Unless you've been studying GIS for 15 years and have somehow NEVER delved into water resource applications, don't waste your money. It's a bunch of theory and conceptual jibber jabber.

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent - but not what I wanted
I didn't find it too useful. Too bad, I was looking for more of a users handbook for the extension - it's more of an explanation of what it can do, not HOW to do it.

4-0 out of 5 stars ArcHydro

2-0 out of 5 stars Good start, but lacking details
This book would be a good resource for anyone that's a well-experienced ArcGIS user. There is a lot of theory and general concepts, but much of the detail has been left out.Actual real world examples are very limited.I'd recommend using the tools in ArcGIS Spatial Analyst and it's related help information over this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GIS 101
This book is an excellent introduction to GIS technology. It is a great starting place for those of us new to the technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start!
The book with the CD are very useful to learn the basics about ESRI GIS principles. I was looking for a book to help gain some insight into how GIS works; this fulfilled the need.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beware of software glitches on the CD-Rom
Received this tutorial today and imediately started on the lessons. Oops! There are two Glaring errors---so far--in the lesson plans. On page 49, when doing the Address Matcher exercise, an error appears: Cannot Build Geocoding Index. No way to get around it, unless you skip the rest of that lesson and move on. On page 75, at least on my home version of XP, cannot save the file to any format. Call to ESRI Support yielded little to no help at all. I only gave this rating a 3, because the overall lessons are great and it is something worth knowing, but the glitches dampen a bit of the enthusiasm. Hopefully, there wont' be any more on the CDRom.

2-0 out of 5 stars Should change the title
to ArcExplorer for everyone.
The book is a great introduction for those who want to have a more or less thorough tour of what a GIS is capable of. Being an ESRI press book, it was more or less obvious that its only approach was goin to be through ESRI products (ie. ArcExplorer)
Anyway, the book only shows what can be done with the already processed, already "ArcMade" datafiles. It fails to explain anything else of the GIS creation process.
If you're looking for a technical book, forget it.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful stocking stuffer

Product Description
"An important and worthy epitaph to the agony of the G.I.'s whose unique American experience is now finally receiving the attention it merits." (New York Times Book Review)

During World War II, prisoners of war were required by the Geneva Conventions to be treated according to established rules. But in late 1944, when a large number of Americans were captured or surrendered during the Battle of the Bulge and elsewhere, their captors had different plans. Those who were Jewish or from some other "undesirable" ethnic or religious group were separated from their fellow captives and sent to the brutal slave-labor camp at Berga.

Until now, the story of what these men endured has been a well-guarded secret.

"Whitlock's efforts at rescuing this story from relative obscurity are certainly praiseworthy...the personal accounts of former POWs in Given Up for Dead give the hardships of capture and imprisonment--not to mention the years spent wrestling with the physical and psychological scars--a human face." 4-0 out of 5 stars Courage of the Common Soldier
Again we learn just how courageous and resilient ordinary young American boys who were swept into war can be. The boys depicted in the book were hardly off the farms or out of high school when they were forced to endure a life they could have never imagined. While they were trained for battle and even expected to be shot out and even be killed they were subjected to horrific status as prisoners of the Germans. Jewish soldiers were pulled out of the ordinary POW camps and had to know they might be executed but they stood up anyway. The author did extensive research, talking to many survivors or their families to get a first hand story of what really happened. Even with the documentation it's still hard to comprehend human beings can be so cruel to one another. Some of the first part of the book is a little tedious as Whitlock leads us through the battles setting up the ultimate fighting where these men were taken captive. Although probably necessary it's a little confusing (and boring) as you wait to get to the "stories." Other than that, the book is informative and well worth the time to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Given Up For Dead
Given Up For Dead, by Flint Whitlock, is the story of a group of American POW's, the majority of whom were Jewish, who were taken to a concentration camp after they were taken prisoner during the Battle of the Bulge. The author does a good job telling about these brave men who were used as slave laborers contrary to the Geneva Convention.Their treatment was a crime that, unfortunately for many reasons, went unpunished after the war.For many, survival was a miracle.A lot of the men interviewed for the book are still suffering both mentally and physically some sixty years later as a result of their experience at Berga, a sub camp of Buchenwald.Although this book isn't written in as interesting of a style as the other recently published book on this subject (Soldiers and Slaves by Roger Cohen) it is still a must read for all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book for GIS Managers
I simply love this book as a resource on my office table. Acquired it for the corporate library and kept on lending it for 1 year. Bought a personal copy from Amazon a year later as I almost missed it when was kept at the library :-)
It is a Must book for all GIS professionals and non-GIS professionals who are directly/ in-directly managing GIS resources in their organizations. Very colorful, to the point, full of case studies, and frankly very short. Next book on your office shelf should be "The Business Benefits of GIS: An ROI Approach".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
I picked up this book at an ESRI User Group meeting.I had seen it advertised and asked the local ESRI rep about it.He gave me the book!

It is an excellent resource. It cites specific studies of GIS use to illustrate how GIS can pay for itself several times over. There are plenty of examples to cover a broad spectrum of GIS uses. There are several government examples, as well as some less known uses.

There is also a slide show / outline based on the book that can be downloaded from the ESRI website.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chapters show how to save money and time
GIS, intelligent digital geographic information systems - are turning geography into a business science, and Measuring Up: The Business Case for GISprovides case studies about companies and government agencies which have implemented GIS solutions in their business goals and plans. Chapters show how to save money and time using GIS-based systems, how to use GIS to generate revenue and help budgets, and how to manage the resources and information bases resulting from GIS systems. The inclusion of over seventy articles from over twenty business sectors span the globe in experience and setting, creating a very specific, detailed set of insights on new GIS-driven business processes. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Managers, The best book on how to use GIS now!
This is an outstanding resource for increasing the return on your GIS investment as well as to get new comers up to speed in understanding the benefits to GIS.As a GIS veteran who has trained new users as well as managers new to GIS in the public, private and non-profit sectors, this is the best book that I have come across to expose them to the importance of GIS and how it has specifically reduced costs, streamlined and improved service as well as perform analysis not feasible in the past.I gave five books to a world class City Planning, Info Tech, Neighborhood Services & Law Enforcement department managers (and kept one for me).

What I specifically enjoyed is that this is a "non-technical" book that focuses on several real world examples of how GIS technology has been used by real people, in the real world, in modern times and budgets and how they benefited as well as how much "$" it saved them.Full of color images and very easy to read.By seeing case studies of what others have done, I am now implementing some of the same uses.So even a GIS dinosaur like myself has been able to steal some wonderful ideas that make my bosses look great.Making them happy keeps me happy.A lifesaver for the new GIS person (especially management) and a resource for the GIS Veteran.Well done & highly recommended.

I recommend buying several copies of this book and sending them out to friends & family you might want to offer more of a glimpse into GIS than just sending them to an online atlas. It comes with ESRI's free GIS viewer ArcExplorer and a decent set of data to get started with, and AE itself is a handy tool for letting folks explore work you've done, or sending them work you've done for them (road trip!).Has an appendix for Import71, which is handy. ...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
Good information but you have to be careful becasue it bounces between kilometers and miles, from chapter to chapter. However overall it is a good source of information but I also noticed it missed a few dates: for example when the Crime Buffer was first theorized, it tells you who theorized it but not an approximate date of whe.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to the State of the Art
Crime definitely has a geographic component. The crime happens at a place with a geographical location, and the criminal must have come from some place (home, school, work) to get to the crime site, and he must have gone somewhere afterward. As early as the 1930, the 'Chicago School' began analyzing crime by sticking pins into maps on walls. By the 1970's sociologists began researching more deeply into 'mapping crime.'

Beginning in the 1960's Graphical Information Systems began to be developed for various applications, and was given a big boost by space based imagery systems.

In recent years the dramatic reduction in the price of computer processing power and the understanding of how crime mapping can be used to predict/prevent/solve crimes.

In the last very few years many of the major technical/social problems in crime mapping have been either solved or great strides have been made in finding a solution.

This book presents the state of the art in using GIS for Crime Mapping. It starts most chapters with tutorials devoted to some particular aspect, and concludes most chapters with a case study illustrating where these techniques are actually in use.

This book is a general, overall introduction to GIS and Crime Mapping. It will be of use to departmental officials and to academics beginning to work in this area. It is well written, well researched and up to date (Published: July 22, 2005). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Service
I ordered three items and paid for expedited (2-3) service on only one of them, from this seller. It will be the last item to arrive, 13 days after I order it! In addition, the book is more expensive than the campus book store item. Use this seller at your own risk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner book
Bought this for a class last year - easy to read and understand.as you can see by the date - it is outdated - but the information is still good.

1-0 out of 5 stars This text is about as bland as they come.
I'll just write here my impressions; maybe some are facts.

Doesn't speak to any one GIS software suite. And I understand that it isn't intended to. Just saying so someone doesn't expect that.

Takes the basic principles and explains the math (literally, the MATH) behind them. Okay, I don't need to know the algebra behind spatial data classification processes, I just need to know how it works.

Too elementary. Example: how are proximity functions different from raster data to vector data?, Chapter 9 asks. Really? This is a question asked in a text used in universities and advanced geospatial courses??

Dry, dry, dry reading. I was tempted to put a pillow in the middle of the thing to cushion my impending fall. I don't know, IMO you don't have to have a shelf full of texts such as this one to be a good analyst. I thought 'GIS Tutorial' was pretty good so I bought it two years ago, started my job and haven't touched it. In fact, I can't remember the last time I did a Union, or a Clip, or an Intersect. Seriously. And I am an accomplished geospatial guy.

If you are in the market for a good beginner's GIS text, 'GIS Tutorial' by Gorr and Kurland is much better. It is ArcGIS specific, but it has practical exercises, and stays away from the algebra. It tells you, 'if you want to do this, this is your tool/extension/process, and this is how you do it. Now, here's an exercise for you to do.' It also comes with a disc that contains the exercise data. Can't beat that.

As for 'GIS Fundamentals', stay away from this dullness. Unless you need a nap, in which case I highly recommend it.

Product Description
Written at a practical level, suited to the business audience, this exceptional book explores the business environment of making GIS successful. It applies academic rigor to practical and commercial implementation issues and offers viewpoints from all parties involved in GIS implementation. Achieving Business Success with GIS provides tangible advice ranging from technical and financial to organizational and commercial. It is unique in that it does not stop short of providing, without hype or embellishment, practical advice and real examples regarding the total cost of ownership of a project or finance and return investment of GIS products. Achieving Business Success with GIS highlights that the use of GIS technology needs to be focused on the business issues, not the technology.

The book begins by describing the use of GIS in a global context within a business environment as the background to outlining the need for organizations to have a strategy for their GIS.  The book then goes on to explore the elements of a GIS strategy and explains issues which are relevant for such approaches and how to go about developing it.

In the closing chapters of this book, the process of specifying and tendering for a GIS are discussed to ensure that the focus of the reader remains on the business issues of the organization. This is followed by examples of the best and worst Geographic Information Systems including a discussion on Google Earth and Web 2.0.

The combination of the statistics from the GIS / Spatial surveys and the author’s consulting experiences make this book an invaluable resource for GIS managers in government (federal, state and local) and utilities, organisations using GIS, and students and lecturers in this field.  ... Read more

Product Description
Studies in the humanities and the social sciences can be enhanced through the use of geographic information systems (GIS). However, this computer-aided method of analysis is worthless unless researchers can devote the time necessary to learn what it is, what it can do, and how to use it.

Resulting from a six-year project entitled Spatial Information Science for the Humanities and Social Sciences (SIS for HSS), GIS-Based Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences details the tools and processes for deploying GIS in economic and social analyses.

Through the use of this book, readers can understand how GIS technology can be utilized in advancing studies. This volume will also encourage professionals in humanities and the social sciences to employ new GIS-based methods in their own research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enabling GIS to the Social Scientist
A great many of the studies made in the humanities and social sciences have a geographical component. It may be the development of communities along transportation systems -- New Orleans was positioned where it is because it was the meeting place between river bound traffic and ocean going vessels.

Much of the studies made in a wide variety of areas like tax income, crime rates, migration patterns, housing prices, school/medical/fire/police services produce geographically oriented data that can better be displayed on a map than any other way.

Modern Geographical Information Systems have come a long way from the very expensive software systems of years past that also required the use of very expensive workstations. Indeed much of the needed software is now abailable at no cost. One chapter in the book details the efforts of the author and others in finding or establishing web sites that point to software of particular interest to the social sciences. Further the extremely rapid development of very powerful personal computer systems has completely overtaken the expensive workstations of the past.

This book is the result of a six year study conducted by Dr. Okabe at the University of Tokyo. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It was pretty good
We used this book in a class several years ago.It was a little dense, but most text books are.It was quite good, and now that I'm teaching GIS to high school kids, I have refered to it several times in order to help describe a concept or technique.

It's probaly not the best, but it's pretty good for the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Had to buy for class
I had to buy this book for a GIS class. Amazon says it is 320 pages, but it is really only 203. This book is a thin hardcover, but is ridiculously priced at over $100 dollars. It sickens me that I have to pay this much. We had BETTER use this book in class. Do not buy this book unless you have to for a class or you have trouble sleeping at night.

4-0 out of 5 stars GIS Raster Review
This book provides a clear and consice review of the use of Raster Modeling for GIS.There are sections of objectives, review chapter summaries, and chapter questions that are very helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, often seems too wordy
I disagree in part with the comments below. This book covers most basic aspects of raster-based modeling. Most GIS books I come across seem to focus on vector format data and concepts. I found this book is a breath of fresh air. And it doesn't limit itself to one particular GIS sofware package and their algorithms when discussing raster abilities. My only negative comments are that it often seems too wordy (although that may be a function of the book layout, it's printed on 8.5 x 11 paper and many pages are single column text only which really appear daunting when looking at them), some subjects could use better, more in-depth coverage with diagrams and figures, and the price.

Raster-based modeling is a rich environment with great potential and I think this book gives a much better introduction than more general GIS books. In addition to this book, I would also recommend books by Joseph K Berry for more advanced raster analysis topics.

2-0 out of 5 stars "The best book out there on raster modeling" (unfortunately)
I have to agree with the above review - over-simplified explainations of the easier topics, then no information on the more difficult ones.A glossary of some of the more complicated terminology would also be EXTREMELY helpful. The diagrams that are included are confusing, particularly the ones that contain mistakes!I am disappointed with this book, but according to my professor this is the best book available right now.COULD SOMEONE PLEASE WRITE A BETTER BOOK???? ...
