Product Description

This is the first book to cover Holocene geology and geomorphology of the entire 8,500 kilometers of the Brazilian coast. It is aimed at third and fourth year undergraduates, post-graduate students, scientists and managers. It characterizes the coast in terms of holocene geology, geomorphology, oceanographic conditions and the location of the barrier types. Separate chapters outline the types of barrier in each state, beginning in the south and proceeding to the north. Special emphasis is placed on the stretches of coast where the detailed morphology and stratigraphy of barriers has been previously determined.

To date the Brazilian coastal barriers have been largely ignored by the international community, especially by north American authors and scientists who generally concentrate on barrier islands. However, the Brazilian coastal barriers display a much wider range of types than is generally assumed. The biggest and most spectacular dunefield barriers in the world exist in Brazil although hitherto completely unknown.

This volumes provides a wealth of information on barrier types, evolution and dynamics. It furnishes managers, biologists and botanists with much needed geological and dynamic background of the evolution, functioning and ecosystems of holocene barriers along the entire Brazilian coast.

Product Description
Significant advances in geomatics and geomorphology are changing the way in which scientists study complex mountain environments. This book provides a critical treatment and evaluation of these recent developments. With the advent of advanced satellite sensors, high resolution satellite imagery and digital elevation models enable quantitative analysis and modelling of the landscape. It is becoming ever more important for geoscientists to integrate geomatics into their scientific investigation. This book is a "must" for any researcher actively working in geomatics, geomorphology and mountain systems. It will also be valuable to geologists and resource planners interested in the role of surface processes in complex orogens and resource assessment and sustainable development. ... Read more

Product Description
Rivers going underground, great springs emerging from the ground, independent hollows and basins instead of connecting valleys, deep potholes and vast caves, isolated towerlike hills reminiscent of the unbelievably steep peaks depicted in Chinese paintings—these are some of the distinctive features of karst, the name given to the kinds of country that owe their special characteristics to the unusual degree of solubility of their component rocks in natural waters.

The special nature of karst is not only intrinsically interesting; it affects many aspects of life in the areas where it is found—water supplies, agriculture, engineering construction, tourism. There are, then, practical as well as scientific reasons for its study.

The dramatic quality of karst landforms has caught the imagination of specialists and laymen alike. This book contains much to stimulate and inform the general reader as well as the undergraduate and high school student for whom it is written. It will be of particular interest to the hydrologist, the speleologist, and the sporting caver and potholer. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The theme of this proceedings volume is the latest research on geomorphic characteristics and processes associated with natural hazards. Presentations cover a gamut of types of disasters throughout the world, describing research and applications of studies in the U.S. and other countries. The book begins with a collection of papers giving a basic background and philosophy of approaching an understanding of natural disasters. These are followed by papers on natural hazards in coastal areas, mountainous regions, landslides, floodingand the detrimental effects of permafrost.

The book should prove valuable in gaining an insight of natural hazards and their geomorphic relations, which is imperative for prudent environmental planning in coping with disasters. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a collection of about 50 articles which treats the development of geomorphology around the world. Countries represented range from some of the smallest to the largest, and also vary in their experience of geomorphology. Emphasis is given to pioneers in the field and their concepts, especially those with international implications. Education, experience and theoretical bases as well as political, economic, legal and military factors are shown to have affected the pursuit of relevant research. However, the major impacts on geomorphology are shown to be the nature of the landscape itself, the training of individual scientists and national characteristics. ... Read more
