Product Description
Introducing the essentials of modern geochemistry for students across the Earth and environmental sciences, this new edition emphasizes the general principles of this central discipline. Focusing on inorganic chemistry, Francis Albarède's refreshing approach is brought to topics that range from measuring geological time to the understanding of climate change. The author leads the student through the necessary mathematics to understand the quantitative aspects of the subject in an easily understandable manner. The early chapters cover the principles and methods of physics and chemistry that underlie geochemistry, to build the students' understanding of concepts such as isotopes, fractionation, and mixing. These are then applied across many of the environments on Earth, including the solid Earth, rivers, and climate, and then extended to processes on other planets. Three new chapters have been added - on stable isotopes, biogeochemistry, and environmental geochemistry. End-of-chapter student exercises, with solutions available online, are also included. ... Product Description

The processes occurring in surface marine sediments have a profound effect on the local and global cycling of many elements. This graduate text presents the fundamentals of marine sediment geochemistry by examining the complex chemical, biological, and physical processes that contribute to the conversion of these sediments to rock, a process known as early diagenesis. Research over the past three decades has uncovered the fact that the oxidation of organic matter deposited in sediment acts as a causative agent for many early diagenetic changes. Summarizing and discussing these findings and providing a much-needed update to Robert Berner's Early Diagenesis: A Theoretical Approach, David J. Burdige describes the ways to quantify geochemical processes in marine sediment. By doing so, he offers a deeper understanding of the cycling of elements such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, along with important metals such as iron and manganese.

No other book presents such an in-depth look at marine sediment geochemistry. Including the most up-to-date research, a complete survey of the subject, explanatory text, and the most recent mathematical formulations that have contributed to our greater understanding of early diagenesis, Geochemistry of Marine Sediments will interest graduate students of geology, geochemistry, and oceanography, as well as the broader community of earth scientists. It is poised to become the standard text on the subject for years to come.

Product Description
The basic philosophy of PRINCIPLES OF ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY is to present chemical principles that are essential for understanding environmental problems and then show how these principles can be applied to real-world problems. The latter goal is achieved by including a number of case studies in each chapter. The book is process oriented, emphasizing the tools needed to understand environmental problems, and is not a recitation of environmental problems and issues. Chemistry topics are developed from first principles and the focus is on those principles that are most useful in the environmental field. This text is more accessible than the larger, higher-level environmental geochemistry books on the market that assume familiarity with chemical and quantitative background material. The topical coverage is broad, including extensive material on the isotopic and mineralogical aspects of environmental issues and a significant chapter on the atmosphere. Case studies are integrated throughout to show the application of the various principles to real-world problems, and many of the very extensive set of end-of-chapter problems encourage students to become familiar with the scientific literature on this subject. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very well targeted
I suspect regarding some of the negative (1 star) reviews this book has received a bit of guerrilla marketing.

This is an excellent text on the subject and easy to read.It is far less confusing than most texts on the subject and makes a perfect text for upper undergraduate or graduate level geochem classes. It's a shame it is out of print at the moment. For presenting geochem in an understandable light, it is far Superior to some of the more popular texts.

It is unfortunate that acceptable texts in this subject for the advanced undergraduate or graduate have become so hard to find.If Drever comes back into print, I would recommend giving it a good look.

BTW, this is not a "do it yourself" book as some may surmise, it is a text that, while easy to understand, is best with a professor/staff/faculty member as a guide.

1-0 out of 5 stars Geochemistry of Natural Waters
I had used this text book for a graduate class in Chemical Hydrogeology while doing my Masters.I found this to be a very poor text to use.The textbook presents a very qaulitative approach to geochemistry of natural waters and does not lend itself to quanititative problem solving.I purchased other texts on ths subject so that I could cross-reference and determine how to setup problems for equilibrium chemistry.I would not recommend use of this text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs Work
This book does not lend itself to an introductory class in geochemistry for the graduate student. The material does not present comprehensive derivations of calculations, but relies on prior knowledge and assumption not generally available,or known by the graduate student first being introduced to Geochemistry. The majority of the book is normally only comprehensable to the student after the material has been described by persons knowledgable in the subject mater. In other word this book is worthless to read prior to the lecture on the subject mater.Furthermore, the appendices are full of errors and contradictions to other references, and the book has numerous typos and difficult language constructs that make the text incomprehensible at times.I hope there is a better book for the introductory graduate class in geochemistry out there, because this book does not cut it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Reference for Aqueous Geochemistry Concepts
Drever's has long been a valuable reference in my own work and in the classes I teach. It is one of several references I use for understanding geochemical processes. The first sentence of the preface states that the text is intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses. I first used this text when I took Aqueous Geochem in grad school and it really made a difference in understanding applications. Spend an hour with Stumm and Morgan and then look at Drever. You'll almost see the lightbulb go on over your head. The example calculations are great and the addition of the geochemical models enhance the applicability of the text.

However, I would note that if you need to start with introductory chemical concepts this isn't the book for you.

If you are weak in chemistry start elsewhere.

Still... two thumbs up from this reviewer.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The first edition of Marine Geochemistry received strong critical acclaim, and the reviews included the comments that it 'provides a benchmark in the field' and 'is clearly recognizable as a standard text for years to come'.

Marine Geochemistry offers a fully comprehensive and integrated treatment of the chemistry of the oceans, their sediments and biota. It addresses the fundamental question 'How do the oceans work as a chemical system?' by capitalizing on the significant advances in understanding oceanic processes made over the past three decades. These advances have been facilitated by improved sampling and analytical techniques, a better understanding of theoretical concepts and the instigation of large-sized international oceanographic programs.

Designed for use as a text, the book treats the oceans as a 'unified system' in which material stored in the sea water, the sediment and the rock reservoirs interacts to control the composition of sea water itself. Part I covers the transport of material to the oceans via rivers, the atmosphere and hydrothermal systems, and discusses their relative flux magnitudes. Part II considers the oceans as a reservoir, introducing water-column parameters before discussing water-column fluxes and the benthic boundary layer. Part III is devoted to the sediment reservoir. The topics covered include diagenesis, the major components of the sediments, and the processes controlling the geochemistry of oceanic deposit, which are discussed in terms of sediment-forming signals. Part IV offers an overview and synthesis of the integrated marine geochemical system.

Since the publication of the first edition, there have been further significant advances in several areas of the subject. The revised text of this edition accommodates these advances, while still retaining the emphasis on identifying key processes operating within a 'unified ocean.' Special attention has been paid to fundamental conceptual changes, such as those related to trace metal speciation in sea water, hydrothermal activity, carbon dioxide and the importance of the oceans in world climate change, the transport of particulate material to the interior of the ocean, primary production and iron limitation, colloids, and the preservation/destruction of organic matter in marine sediments.

Intermediate and advanced students with interests in chemical oceanography, marine geochemistry, marine biology and environmental chemistry will welcome this revised comprehensive text. Other students in the broader field of earth sciences will find it to be an essential reference source dealing with the interaction between the atmosphere, the ocean and the solid earth.

  • Incorporates all significant recent advances in the field.
  • 'Unified system' approach to ocean chemistry.
  • Emphasises geological contexts, e.g. sediment diagenesis.

Humic Substances color all waters more or less brown. Their concentrations exceed all carbon of living organisms by at least one order of magnitude. Opposite to former paradigms, they participate in almost any metabolic pathway. They protect against UV-irradation, enable indirect photolysis and, thus, purify hazardous chemicals, they provide inorganic and organic nutrients, may form cryptic genes with DNA and dampen metabolic fluctuations. More recently they can increase adverse effects of hazardous chemicals and they can directly interfere with organisms. The book tries to relate effects to structural features. ... Read more

Product Description
In this first full-scale attempt to reconstruct the chemical evolution of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans, Heinrich Holland assembles data from a wide spectrum of fields to trace the history of the ocean-atmosphere system. A pioneer in an increasingly important area of scholarship, he presents a comprehensive treatment of knowledge on this subject, provides an extensive bibliography, and outlines problems and approaches for further research.

The first four chapters deal with the turbulent first half billion years of Earth history. The next four chapters, devoted largely to the Earth from 3.9 to 0.6 b.y.b.p., demonstrate that changes in the atmosphere and oceans during this period were not dramatic. The last chapter of the book deals with the Phanerozoic Eon; although the isotopic composition of sulfur and strontium in seawater varied greatly during this period of Earth history, the chemical composition of seawater did not. ... Product Description
The book documents and explains, in three parts, geochemical anomaly and mineral prospectivity mapping by using a geographic information system (GIS). Part I reviews and couples the concepts of (a) mapping geochemical anomalies and mineral prospectivity and (b) spatial data models, management and operations in a GIS. Part II demonstrates GIS-aided and GIS-based techniques for analysis of robust thresholds in mapping of geochemical anomalies. Part III explains GIS-aided and GIS-based techniques for spatial data analysis and geo-information sybthesis for conceptual and predictive modeling of mineral prospectivity. Because methods of geochemical anomaly mapping and mineral potential mapping are highly specialized yet diverse, the book explains only methods in which GIS plays an important role. The book avoids using language and functional organization of particular commercial GIS software, but explains, where necessary, GIS functionality and spatial data structures appropriate to problems in geochemical anomaly mapping and mineral potential mapping. Because GIS-based methods of spatial data analysis and spatial data integration are quantitative, which can be complicated to non-numerate readers, the book simplifies explanations of mathematical concepts and their applications so that the methods demonstrated would be useful to professional geoscientists, to mineral explorationists and to research students in fields that involve analysis and integration of maps or spatial datasets. The book provides adequate illustrations for more thorough explanation of the various concepts.

*explains GIS functionality and spatial datastructures appropriate regardless of particular GIS software is in use
*simplifies explanation of mathematical concepts and application
