Product Description
Shrimps are subject to great consumer demand in the United States. However, more than #1 billion worth of shrimp is now imported; more than twice the amount produced domestically.Domestic shrimp production, mostly from the trawler fleet in the Gulf of Mexico, is thought to be at its maximum sustainable yield of 91,000 MT (heads-off).Increased production of shrimp in the U.S. through mariculture has been motivated by the increasing demand for this product.

The biology of penaeid shrimp and lack of technology for their culture present special problems in fisheries science, reproductive biology, endocrinology, nutrition, pathology, culture science and future research. The purpose of the Frontiers of Shrimp Research symposium was to assess the status of shrimp research in these areas and to further foster the scientific collaboration vital for significant research advances. The participants included representatives of the science funding agencies, the mariculture industry and representatives of both the scientific research and science policy communities.

The subject matter should be of interest to a variety of readers.Advanced undergraduate/graduate students, mariculturists and research workers will find this volume both interesting and informative.

Product Description
The demand for high quality aquacultured products and an increasing concern for resource conservation has led individuals and large corporations to invest time and money in commercial scale recirculating production systems. However, there are relatively few reports of profitable recirculating production systems in operation. There is little doubt that most fish reared in ponds, floating net pens, or raceways can be produced in commercial scale recirculating systems.

The objective of this book is to provide basic information and analytical skills for the reader so that they may make the proper design or investment decisions concerning water reuse and recycle systems. The chapters of this book are sequenced to provide continuity to a basic approach that would be used in designing a water reuse or recycle system. The chapter authors contributing to this book have written extensively in the literature already on the particular subject being addressed in their chapter.

Considerable background information on the basic processes being presented is also given in each chapter to supplement the basic design information being provided. These chapters should provide the reader with essentially all the information required in order to design and manage a water reuse system.

The book is written for engineers and biologists working in the area of intensive fish culture. The text should also prove useful as a design manual for practising aquaculturists and as a resource of current "state-of-the-art" methodologies associated with water reuse systems. ... Read more

Product Description
Fish farming has increased in status equal to cattle farming as a source of food for mankind. In developing countries fish and shellfish provide inexpensive animal protein, while in developed countries aquaculture is expected to produce more fish and shellfish as a source of low-calorie protein for health conscious individuals. In such an era, knowledge of fish farming technologies of different countries, strongly influenced by cultural factors, is of valuable importance. The primary production techniques of fish farming in Japan described here have an emphasis on practical technology. This second edition reflects the changes in both quantity of production and technology in Japanese aquaculture. The statistics have been revised and the text rewritten to suit the current status of aquaculture in Japan; new aquaculture species have been included and discussions on marine ranching and biotechnology for aquaculture added. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A tall poppy speaks
On the Sex of Fish and the Gender of Scientists: A collection of essays in fisheries science.

By Daniel Pauly. 1994
London: Chapman & Hall. Fish and Fisheries Series 14.
ISBN 0 412 595400

Is Daniel Pauly the Steven Jay Gould of the fisheries world, as claimed by his colleague Tony Pitcher? On the evidence of this slim volume of clippings, gleaned mostly from ICLARM journals, the answer must be no. Nevertheless, despite the lack of coherence in these miscellaneous musings, there is certainly food for thought, and considerable promise that Daniel Pauly may yet mature into the Steven Jay Gould (or even the Germaine Greer) of the fisheries world.

Those who know him are aware that Pauly is not a man to mince words, particularly when dealing with other human beings, and the occasionally scathing reviews and criticisms contained in this book can be highly entertaining. Those who know him are also aware that Daniel is not a man of underweening ego. Who else but Daniel Pauly would write articles about the frequency of his reprint requests and citations? And who else but Daniel Pauly would complain that people don't publish enough of their original raw data (Essay 26: "Data-rich books") for him to use in his own work (Essay 19: "On using other people's data").

However, there is no room for modesty if you are going to change the world, and there is no denying that Pauly is a juggernaut when it comes to promoting concepts. He is the master of the eye-catching phrase, which is almost as beneficial to one's citation count as authoring new methodology. How many times did you see the phrase "Malthusian overfishing (Pauly 1994)" a few years ago? His promotion of length-based stock assessment methods using ELEFAN was legendary, although it is a pity that the limitations of ELEFAN were not as heavily promoted in the beginning, particularly its simplistic method of identifying histogram peaks through running-average subtraction, and lack of any way of assessing the statistical significance of results. But hell, these are just the teething troubles that any new technology suffers, and Bill Gates had no compunction in releasing the bug-ridden first release of Windows 3.0 on the unsuspecting public.

Pauly seems to feel that confidence in one's results is a matter more of personality than statistics. In Essay 2: "Concepts that work", he berates John Gulland for having warned scientists in the tropics about using estimates for mortality that have no confidence intervals around them, simply because some temperate fishery stock assessments have also used similar "unconfident" estimates. In this essay, Pauly seems to have great confidence that the length-based estimation of mortality is now an exact science, but paradoxically feels that it is almost impossible to get a handle on recruitment. Both processes are of courseequally well (or poorly) described by looking at opposite ends of the length-frequency histogram.

4-0 out of 5 stars outstanding text but...
This is a very good narrative from the 'Stephen Jay Gould of Fisheries' but in the end it is just exactly a collection of essays and in no way merits the price tag that has been hung on it.Read it at the library if you can convince them to buy it. ... Read more

Product Description
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) developed the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction (ALWTR) plan to protect endangered large whales from entanglements in commercial fishing gear, which can cause injury or death. Because whales continued to die after the ALWTF plan went into effect, NMFS proposed revisions in 2005. The author of this book discusses these issues, as well as the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), which requires the NMFS to establish take reductions teams for certain marine mammals to develop measures to reduce their incidental takes. Other bills that specifically address marine mammal regulatory and management issues are examined as well. Furthermore, while some of these issues can be addressed administratively, in regulations proposed and promulgated by the National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, or the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, others likely would require statutory change. This book lays out the range of issues likely to be raised during reauthorization debate, the reasons behind them, and possible proposals that could be offered to address these concerns. This book consists of public domain documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access. ... Product Description
This excellent second edition of Fisheries Biology, Assessment and Management, has been fully updated and expanded, providing a book which is an essential purchase for students and scientists studying, working or researching in fisheries and aquatic sciences.

In the same way that excessive hunting on land has threatened terrestrial species, excessive fishing in the sea has reduced stocks of marine species to dangerously low levels. In addition, the ecosystems that support coastal marine species are threatened by habitat destruction, development and pollution. Open access policies and subsidised fishing are placing seafood in danger of becoming a scarce and very expensive commodity for which there is an insatiable demand.

Positive trends include actions being taken to decrease the incidental catches of non-target species, consumer preferences for seafood from sustainable fisheries, and the establishment of no-take areas that provide refuges for marine species. But there is an urgent need to do more.

Because there is an increasing recognition of the need to manage ecosystems as well as fish stocks, this second edition of this bestselling text book includes an additional chapter on marine ecology. Chapters on parameter estimation and stock assessment now include step-by-step instructions on building computer spreadsheet models, including simulations with random variations that realistically emulate the vagaries of nature. Sections on ecosystem management, co-management, community-based management and marine protected areas have been expanded to match the increased interest in these areas.

Containing many worked examples, computer programs and numerous high quality illustrations, Fisheries Biology, Assessment and Management, second edition, is a comprehensive and essential text for students worldwide studying fisheries, fish biology, aquatic and biological sciences. As well as serving as a core text for students, the book is a superb reference for fisheries and aquatic researchers, scientists and managers across the globe, in both temperate and tropical regions. Libraries in all universities where fish biology, fisheries, aquatic sciences and biological sciences are studied and taught will need copies of this most useful new edition on their shelves.

Product Description
Pacific salmon are among the dominant fish groups and the main consumers of forage resources in the upper layer of the subarctic Pacific. In the last years, the majority of Pacific salmon species in North America and in Asia have experienced an increase in abundance, and their role in marine ecosystem has changed. This book examines the feeding habits and trophic status of the Pacific salmon in different regions of the subarctic Pacific under the influence of changing environmental factors. Moreover, this book deals with the present-day Norwegian regulations of saltwater salmon fisheries and particularly Norway's attempts to harmonise the interests of people and fish. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) constitute carcinogenic environmental contaminants such as dioxins. Fishes and particularly Salmonids are very sensitive to the PAH toxicity. The natural and anthropogenic PAH generations lead to an environmental contamination of water, sediments and feed of Salmonids, then to a fish contamination and finally to a human food contamination eating those contaminated fishes. The authors of this book discuss the monitoring of these chemical contaminants in salmon, essential to evaluate the pollution related to human activities and to guarantee the quality of fish as food for human consumption. In addition, the effects of replacing fish oil (FO) with rapeseed oil (RO) in Atlantic salmon post-smolt diets is discussed, and its subsequent effects on liver and muscle fatty acid (FA) composition and growth are described. This book also describes the high-pressure processing of fresh salmon and light preserved products like cold smoked salmon. Its effect on microorganisms, enzymes and organoleptic properties are analysed, as well as the process parameters, pressure, duration, and temperature affecting microorganisms, structure and colour, which all determine the market chances of the product. Moreover, the authors underline the influence of three main factors - super-chilling, dietary lipids and pre-slaughter crowding stress, on Atlantic salmon flesh quality, with a focus on the role of lysosomes and lysosomal enzymes, cathepsins B and L, in muscle structure degradation and flesh quality. ... Product Description
Quantitative modeling methods have become a central tool in the management of harvested fish populations. This book examines how these modeling methods work, why they sometimes fail, and how they might be improved by incorporating larger ecological interactions. Fisheries Ecology and Management provides a broad introduction to the concepts and quantitative models needed to successfully manage fisheries.

Walters and Martell develop models that account for key ecological dynamics such as trophic interactions, food webs, multi-species dynamics, risk-avoidance behavior, habitat selection and density-dependence. They treat fisheries policy development as a two-stage process, first identifying strategies for varying harvest in relation to changes in abundance, then finding ways to implement such strategies in terms of monitoring and regulatory procedures. This book provides a general framework for developing assessment models in terms of state-observation dynamics hypotheses, and points out that most fisheries assessment failures have been due to inappropriate observation model hypotheses rather than faulty models for ecological dynamics.

Intended as a text in upper division and graduate classes on fisheries assessment and management, this useful guide will also be widely read by ecologists and fisheries scientists. ... Read more

Product Description
Recreational fishing in the United States is an important social and economic component of many marine fisheries, with an estimated 14 million anglers making almost 82 million fishing trips in 2004. Although each individual angler typically harvests a small number of fish, collectively these sport fisheries can take a significant fraction of the yearly catch - in some cases more than commercial fisheries. For example, in 1999, recreational fishing accounted for 94 per cent of the total catch of spotted sea trout, 76 per cent of striped bass and sheephead, and 60 percent of king mackerel. It is important that systems used to monitor fishing catch are adequate for timely management of recreational fisheries. However, the large number of anglers and access points makes monitoring recreational fishing much more difficult than monitoring commercial fishing. This report reviews the types of survey methods used to estimate catch in recreational fisheries, including state/federal cooperative programs. The report finds that both telephone survey and onsite access components of the current monitoring systems have serious flaws in design or implementation. There are also several areas of miscommunication and mismatched criteria among designers of surveys, data collectors, and recreational fisheries. The report recommends that a comprehensive, universal sampling frame with national coverage should be established, and that improvements should be made in statistical analysis of the data collected and in the ways the data are communicated. A permanent and independent research group should be established and funded to evaluate the statistical design and adequacy of recreational fishery surveys and to guide necessary modifications or new initiatives. ... Product Description
Freshwater ecosystems, such as lakes, rivers, ponds and wetlands are a precious and critically important form of natural resource. This book highlights the need for a strong scientific approach to biomonitoring and conservation of fresh waters and identifies key shortcomings in the present approach. Pertinent examples of this come from the rapid advances made recently on the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem processes and in food web research, neither of which have so far informed monitoring and management practices. This book also reviews and describes the morphology and material translocation of emergent plants under a set of different environmental conditions, namely, seasonal, spatial, sediment, water depth and harvesting. Furthermore, the environmental impact of phosphorus (P) waste from the aquaculture industry is increasingly a matter of concern in Japan and elsewhere around the world. This book provides nutritional approaches for the reduction of phosphorus waste from yellowtail, one of the highest of any farmed fish species.Other chapters in this book include a review of the benefits of fish embryo cryopreservation for aquaculture and conservation purposes, a discussion of the position of life-history strategies in community ecology, a comparison of the top-down and bottom-up control philosophies for the food chain model so that the most effective management can be identified, the role of systems theory in sustainable management of freshwater systems and ecosystems and a discussion of the present problems that are related to water and sanitation in Sudan. ... Product Description
Quantitative methods and mathematical modelling are of critical importance to fishery science and management but, until now, there has been no book that offers the sharp focus, methodological detail, and practical examples needed by non-specialist fishery scientists and managers, and ecologists. Modelling and Quantitative Methods in Fisheries fills that void. To date, methodology books in fisheries science have been limited to cookbook approach to problems; simple compilations; or expositions in which either too much theory or insufficient methodological detail is given. The text is organized into three sections: an introduction to modelling in fisheries and ecology, a straight methodology section covering a range of methods, and a section focusing on specific fields in fisheries science. This book is timely as it addresses a topic of recent debate in fisheries and ecology, describing and comparing the uses of Least Squares, Maximum Likelihood, and Bayesian quantitative methods.Designed as stand-alone units, each chapter provides examples from both classic and recent literature and comes with dedicated Excel spreadsheets that permit you to delve into every detail of the analysis. All of these spreadsheets serve as active examples, which can easily be modified and customized and can be used as templates for analyzing your own data. The spreadsheets permit you to learn at your own speed and cover the simplest linear regression to the more complex non-linear modelling using maximum likelihood.Data analysis and modelling are best learned by doing and not just by reading. This book illustrates, step by step, the analyses it covers. More detailed in terms of introductory quantitative methods and modelling as applied to fisheries than any other book available, Modelling and Quantitative Methods in Fisheries gives you the advantage by supplying the full details of the analysis so that understanding the material is a matter of following the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best DIY book for fisheries modelling & quantitative methods
This book is successful in teaching and guiding the readers (especially the novice) on how to understand the often confusing concepts of modelling and quantitative methods in fisheries; not to mention the daunting math works. Other books written by great authors may be great in underlying theory and what not; but this book is the BEST in providing clear and focused step-by-step guide, even for the most complex theory. Malcolm Haddon had made modelling and quantitative methods in fisheries very easy. The math works can be followed easily and he gave enough leads between equations. The compilation of the math works in the appendices also really helps. The language used throughout the book is also very simple and to the point for non-native English speaker. The accompanying Excel spreadsheets are essential for readers to practice using simple examples. Four thumbs up for this book! :-)

In my opinion, Malcolm Haddon has managed a "tour de force" with this book. He not only covered most of the modern methods of quantitative analysis and modelling in fisheries science but he did so in a clear and relatively simple language. His book is approachable to all biologists with a basic understanding of mathematics and statistics.Yet, he managed to cover both the theoretical underpinnings of the methods and the practical aspects of their use (options, pitfalls ... etc.). In addition, the book gives MS Excel examples of the methods which should allow those of us who are not programmers to fully appreciate the methods by using them interactively. The Excel spreadsheets are also available for download on two web sites. ...
