Am I the only one bothered by...
This is a beautiful book and I am a fan of the author/illustrator's work in general but the text that relates to the 'extra' fish on each page is so similar in color to the dark blue background it's very hard to see. I actually had the book for a few days before I even saw it!!! I wish they'd used a different color for the font. Maybe it is more visible in the non-board book formats. I would hope so, because it really seems like a major design flaw, given the 'extra' fish and extra text would have been an otherwise nice touch.

Great for preschool!
We enjoy this book in preschool as a counting book and also as a wonderful link to drawing our own colorful fish. The children will use this book many times after the initial reading.

Great Author!
Again I will say ALL books by this author are worth getting! Just got this for my 2 year old son for X-mas and he loves it! It's main content is numbers 1-10 and describing words (jumping, green, skinny...).It's great! Check out these too...Snowballs, Vegetable Soup, Nuts to You, Ten Black Dots, Planting a Rainbow.

It's about time I bought it.
I have borrowed this book many times while diving Southeast Asia and it's about time I bought my own copy.I have always thought it was the best fish guide but didn't want to pack one more thing.I'll exchange all those unnecessary clothes for this in my suitcase.

Amazing!
I'd like to meet another person who has not wondered, at least 16 times, what it is like to be a fish. It's one of those questions I have every 4 or 5 days. This book manages to take 600 pages of material and condense it into 32 pages about being a fish. I'm an outstanding swimmer, but do not have the ability to stay underwater for long periods of time. Fish can do that and that is why I admire them. Fish are kind of cocky about the fact they swim better than I can, but I can tell you one thing, I would not fall for fisherman tricks! If I were a fish and saw a worm on a hook or a lure, I would tell my fish friends that it is a trick and if they try to eat it, they will be on Bill Dance outdoors. If you are lucky, they will let you go, but some people would eat you.

Let me take part of that back, I wouldn't tell all of the fish it's a trick. If there was a particular fish I didn't like, I wouldn't tell him it's a trick. I would say things like, "that suuuure looks tasty and you should eat it". When he did, I would just laugh and tell everyone that I knew it was a trick but that fish was stupid. I would probably date the best looking girl fish because me being a fish wouldn't differ from my human form in that area. I would be charming and attractive, even as a fish.

Get this book and you will know fish like me. Just kidding, you won't know it was well as me, but you won't sound so dumb.

6 1/2 year old not interested in what it's like to be a fish!
This is a good book for a 10 year old who is interested in taking care of gold fish.It was required reading for my granddaughter who is entering the 1st grade this year.She was not at all ready for so much instruction.The book is well done, but not well received by 6 year old girl.

This is one great book in a wonderful series
I can't speak highly enough of the "Let's Read and Find Out Series." My two and four year old boys love to read them. Just enough info to be interesting and instructive for two, three and four year olds.

We have an aquarium nearby, and after reading this book my three year old began appreciating the fish as complex animals instead of glancing at them as he ran by to the next tank.

What a Read!
Even for non-fishermen, this book has proven to be a compelling study of how we, as a society, make decisions with consequences far beyond our ability to imagine time and scale.Utterly readable, articulate, and enjoyable-- and a fabulous topic for restaurant dinners while eating the rainbow trout special.

Excellent history of stocking rainbow trout
This book has a lot of detail but does not get bogged down nor is it boring. It isvery engaging and will most likely be read very quickly. The main emphasis is on history with information on the science and technology of hatchery trout second. The author also talks a little about the future of trout and hatcheries.

Hubris Begets Havoc

Environmental havoc that is.

This very good book is not just for anglers, ichthyologists, or other fishy folk; it's for anybody interested in environmental issues and man's interactions with nature.

Halverson tells the story (so over the top that sometimes it seems he's spinning a yarn) of the misplaced efforts to manipulate nature and "improve fisheries" through the widespread stocking of hatchery raised rainbow trout. In the 19th century fishing was seen as a means of protecting "dexterity in the arts of pursuit and destruction, courage and self-reliance". There was widespread concern that deterioration of these skills would compromise the nation's ability to "...maintain inviolate our rights and our liberties". As the author summarizes the prevailing mood at the time, "Say goodbye to recreational fishing, in other words, and say goodbye to American democracy".

Fishing at the time was threatened as a result of the wanton environmental destruction of the industrial revolution. And rather than dealing with the root causes, the government's response was aggressive stocking of rainbow trout, which were more resistant to poor water conditions than native species such as brook trout.

It's amazing to follow the chronicle of the various rationales that continued to support this practice to the present day. Also astonishing is the variety of unintended consequences of this activity, which has irretrievably altered ecosystems and eliminated native species in this country, and eventually around the world.

Halverson's style is engaging and accessible and he manages to avoid sanctimony in making his points. He approaches the whole subject with humility and a sense that the answers are not all known, and perhaps not knowable.

Hopefully a measure of humility will replace hubris as we steward the resources of our planet in the 21st century.

Highly recommended.

Arrogant, but interesting...
I must admit that I bought the book based on the cover.Indeed, rainbow trout beguiled me at a young age, and I have spent nearly 50 years watching, catching, and smoking these beautiful creatures.

Sadly though, this book is just an arrogant hatchet job on a species which did nothing wrong but attract the attention of humans.I think Anders Halverson has gone right out of his head over the issue of stocker trout.He equates them with environmental catastrophe sounding the alarm that they have decimated endangered species like mountain yellow legged frogs.Interestingly, my 40+ years of hiking and fishing the Sierra Nevada have not drawn the same conclusion.For example, I was fly fishing Mono Creek last year and catching nice rainbows, all the while I had to watch where I stepped because there were endangered frogs in the same water.Frogs have also disappeared from lakes where rainbow trout have not been present, and the likely culprit has been determined to be a fungus that is being spread around the world by ecotourists and their muddy hiking boots.So much for evil rainbow trout.This environmental insanity continues to harm recreation, tourism, and the economy because as I write this review, it is illegal for Fish and Game, or anybody, for that matter, to plant trout into any body of water in the Eastern Sierra because of claims that it will impact the willow flycatcher, a small bird.How somebody made that connection is beyond my limited experience, I guess.I have worked for NOAA Fisheries, California Fish and Game, and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife on various fishery projects, but I must be really ignorant for thinking that New Zealand Mud Snails and Whirling Disease have been spread around North America by fly fishermen and their muddy waders, and not stocker rainbow trout.The author of this book is convinced that hatcheries are to blame, and nothing else.The facts support me, and not the author, I am afraid.Of course, its always fun to blame stocker trout.

I suspect that these attacks on rainbow trout are more about the people who like to fish for them, than any real environmental concern.I can only imagine the disdain these environmental elite must hold for people who smoke cigarettes, drink beer, and use worms to catch stocker rainbow trout in the local fishing hole.If these elitists like Anders could have their way, it would be illegal to hunt, fish, or wear camo.They assume the position of the environmental gestapo and use everything they have at their disposal to try and eliminate outdoor recreation that doesn't suit their fancy.Ban this, and ban that.They envision this world where everything is either a wilderness area, or a national park.I have custom bamboo fly rods in my closet that cost more than I care to admit.I love the sport.But just because some clown can buy a grand in LL Bean equipment and stand in a river waving a stick, does not make anybody Hemingway.This book really smacks of arrogance, hate, disrespect for fellow humans, and selfishness.Sadly, this book is just one more example of the political discord in America that has become all too divided.Blaming stocker trout for the folly of man is mindless.This book really pissed me off.

So as I wrap this up, all I can say is: Long live the sluggo stocker rainbow mongrel trout!If it wasn't for these fish, most children would catch almost nothing.The great American family tradition of camping, and catching a fish to supplement the family meal would be over.We will become a nation of video game morons, stuffing our faces with Cheetos, and with no desire to experience the outdoors.Stocker rainbow trout are a gateway drug to the great outdoors.Lets give everyone this chance to love the persuit of this wonderful fish.

An Important Book for all Cold Water Fisherman
The book is both a good read and provides, in some detail, a history and the resulting consequences of our attempts to manipulate nature in the form of a manufactured replacement fish for the fresh water fisheries we destroy or attempt to improve.The author is careful to provide the historic context under which decisions were made and to provide excellent notes and a bibliography.The latter contains much hard to find information and is likely worth the book price by itself.This book shoud be read by every thoughtful environmentally-concerned freshwater fisherman. ... Thorough and complete book on cooking fish
While I may never be able to try all the recipes in this cookbook, living far from the ocean makes it hard to purchase whole, fresh fish for example; I will be able to try most of the recipes included in this very thorough cookbook. The author offers a large compendium of recipes, a thorough section on different types of fish, and color photos of fish preparation.

Overall, this is probably the most complete book I have ever had the pleasure of reading concerning seafood. Highly recommend.

One of the few great books on fish & shellfish
This is an excellent book on fish and shellfish cookery. The photographs are all "bunched" in the center of the book which makes it a bit (but only a bit) inconvenient to flip back and forth to find the corresponding recipes. The book assumes thorough knowledge and ease of identifying fish from a myriad of species available at large fish markets (either on part of the reader or the fishmonger - unfortunately, this is not always so). I would have liked to see just a few more of the really good photographs, especially with the included seafood dictionary. Nevertheless, this may be the only book of its kind I will use in the future.

THIS IS THE BEST I HAVE FOUND SO FAR!
Today I ordered a new seafood cookbook; a gold box offer. Then I see my very favorite, still out there for sale! I have cherished this for years! This is full of information! It tells you about the fish or seafood and suggests ways to cook it. Tells how to clean fresh seafood. I love it. We will see if this new one I ordered today measures up. Ummmm, we will see!

My favorite resource for fish and seafood.
This was my textbook for Fish and Seafood in Culinary Arts.My instructor was a 1st year teacher and I'm thankful I had this book to refer to.I can now walk into a fish market with confidence and know what I'm looking for and how to properly break down a whole fish.

A dear friend of mine is a charter fisherman in Nantucket and I told him about this book.He loves it as well.I love the fact that Peterson gives you several fish options for your recipes, in case you don't have access to the one specific fish needed.You are then free to use the other fish suggested.Reading his comments are insightful as well, I have probably learned as much from those as from the other text in the book. ... Amy Tan, who has an unerring eye for relationships between mothers and daughters, especially Chinese-American, has departed from her well-known genre in Saving Fish From Drowning.She would be well advised to revisit that theme which she writes about so well.

The title of the book is derived from the practice of Myanmar fishermen who "scoop up the fish and bring them to shore.They say they are saving the fish from drowning.Unfortunately... the fish do not recover,"This kind of magical thinking or hypocrisy or mystical attitude or sheer stupidity is a fair metaphor for the entire book.It may be read as a satire, a political statement, a picaresque tale with several "picaros" or simply a story about a tour gone wrong.

Bibi Chen, San Francisco socialite and art vendor to the stars, plans to lead a trip for 12 friends: "My friends, those lovers of art, most of them rich, intelligent, and spoiled, would spend a week in China and arrive in Burma on Christmas Day."Unfortunately, Bibi dies, in very strange circumstances, before the tour begins.After wrangling about it, the group decides to go after all.The leader they choose is indecisive and epileptic, a dangerous combo.Bibi goes along as the disembodied voice-over.

There are some goofy parts about Harry, the member of the group who is left behind, and his encounter with two newswomen from Global News Network, some slapstick sex scenes and a great deal of dog-loving dialogue. I HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO LISTEN TO IT YET!!!!!!
It arrived in a timely manner, but as yet Ihaven't had time to listen to it

DISAPPOINTING !!! Don't bother with this book.
I agree with all the rest of the 3 and lower ratings group ... When I read the pocket and the first few pages I was captivated ! This sounded like it would be a wonderful read .... but I was soon disappointed. The book gets 2 stars for at least having a good first half. In that section there is mystery ... why was she murdered, where are the 11 missing pple ... and as you read you are dying to see and read about what really happened to them! But all to soon that part comes and the disappointment is overwhelming ! The second half of the book is filled with excessive words and stories that hold no baring, there are to many missed moments .... Like when Harry happens to miss seeing that it is the missing 11 on the tape he was given b/c she was turning down the volume. You read and read hoping for the pain (of finishing the book) to end. I only completed the book out of an obligation to myself to see it to the end. But this was a 100% disappointing novel. AMY TAN COULD DO BETTER !!!! and she does not in this book. It is a pass .... for those how have not read it .... don't waste your time, it's not worth it. This is definitely a book for the yard sale.

Amy Tan novels
I just finished reading 'The Bonesetters Daughter' by Amy Tan and I couldn't put it down. Had to try another Amy Tan novel so I'm taking this one on vacation.

Why so negative?
I read this about four years ago and was just amazed by the beautifully fictionalized allusions to real events. She deftly plays with three levels of reality and fiction, making the reader wonder what is real, what the author believes is real, and what is fiction throughout. It has colored my views of what is humanitarian, and teasingly helped me not be an idiot on my first trip overseas.

I found it to be delightful and powerful. It made an impression on me that persisted through four years. I loaned my copy out and it never came home, so I bought another copy. I recommended it to my book club tonight. So I'm amazed to see negative reviews. Please don't believe them. Don't expect Joy Luck Club--it's not that kind of novel. Give it a try on its own merits.

I love Amy Tan, but this book was so disappointing.The premise was odd and fictional (portrayed as truth).While the narrator was at time humorous, the pace was slow and the characters dull and unlikeable.I was hoping for at least some more insight into life in Asia, but again was disappointed.I couldn't wait for it to end. ... Excellent Book
I am fairly new to the hobby and have made several mistakes already regarding the fishes I have bought. I have even brought home species that didn't have the slightest chance to survive in the tank, but the retailer never said anything about it, probably because he didn't know any better. My main problem so far has been not knowing anything about the fishes I'm buying at the moment of buying them. The dealers most of the time don't know either that much about them, they just know basic information and never ask what you have in your tank, for them you can simply take home any fish they have on sale. This book is my companion now every time I go shopping for fish, it tells me everything I need to know about that fish I see in the tank and want to buy but don't know anything about.

An excellent reference
There is not too much to say about this guide other than it has just about every marine fish I could think of, and that it's great, and accurate! This is a must have for absolutely anyone involved in any way with saltwater tanks. Be sure to pick up the companion Invertebrate guide too!

Review for "A Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes: North America North of Mexico" by peterson
This field guide in my opinion is not user friendly for quick reference of fishes native to North America. It is not color coordinated and one has to flip from one section of the book to another section then another to find out information about the same fish. To me thats disorganized. An example of that is that the description of a fish is toward the middle of the book and to find its native range the map for it is in the back of the book. Also the pictures of fish are very limited and the pictures provided are of the artwork form and not live or preserved specimen pictures of the fish. In my opinion and experience artwork of fishes used for reference on fish identification are very miss leading and limiting.

The book is helpful in identifying fish species found in North America. It does require some knowledge of identification to be useful.Overall, the book fulfills most field identification needs.

After a recent dive trip to Florida springs I needed a field guide to help me identify some of the fishes I saw. This book did the job. It appears to be very complete, which is what I needed.

Five stars!
Great book with lots of pictures of species.I hoped that there would be photos for EACH species of fish but there was not.Each fish is documented though even if there is no picture for each.Many species are shown.I still have to give it 5 stars.This book is a great size too.It is not oversized.Perfect for travel.

This book may be of interest to an icthyolgist, but it's not much use to a fisherman. The color illustrations are very poor. They all have a washed out yellowish tint, and thus the illustrated fish tend to look all alike. The non color illustrations are better, but the book relies mostly on descriptions. ... Read more

My babies loved it!
This was one of the first books we started reading to our twins, and I swear it was their favorite!The illustrations are beautiful.My babies really began paying attention to books at about 7 months -- I think by that age the colors are bright and bold enough.

expecting more
I was expecting an actual story with this book such as the other Rainbow Fish books so I could use it with my students. There are only 2 words on each page, so definately the reading level for 3yrs and under.

When Fish Fly: A Must Read for Small Businesses
I read this book so long ago I nearly forgot about it until one of my clients, whom I provide marketing services for her skin care studio, was mentioning challenges in dealing with employee moral. The economy is down and as a small business offering a luxury service (high-end spa and skin care services), her estheticians/skin care specialists are feeling frustrated that they aren't getting more clients in the door, but they won't help "promote" themselves/their services or the skin care studio. They're not full-time employees so they feel the owner should do marketing that draws in all new clients for them.

I recommended this book to my client to help her see new ways of employee communications and ideas for motivating her staff. Even though they aren't full-time employees, they just didn't feel like they had a stake in the business. My client really needed this book to see how empowering her staff could help motivate them and driver her business to success.

Inspirational
I bought three copies of this book for our management committee because although the message is simple, it is very powerful - create an atmosphere where everyone is totally committed to your mission.I liked it because it is inspiring, but an easy read.While it doesn't really give you a lesson plan (or one of those stupid acronyms that are so popular with self-help books), it gives you an example of a business where the collective will of the group of employees and their boss made a profound impact on the business.

Some years ago at a team building event - the facilitator introduced how to have "fun" at the workplace by sharing the "Fish" video - introducing the Pike Place Fishmarket.We chuckled at it - and used some ideas to have more fun.Then in 2006, I visited Seattle - and by coincidence - I walked by the actual Fish Market.I remembered the video and realized this was THE place.I observed the chemistry and when I arrived home I started seaching for more information about the Pike Place Fish market.At Amazon I came accross this book, which more or less is an autobiography from the owner of the market - and gives a great insight to the background - the why and how - of the concepts that they have embraced at the market.I am so glad I started here with this book - before I learned more about the concept and introduced "Fish" at our workplace.I can highly recommend the book.

Okay
This wasn't what I was originally looking for. I wanted a video of the Pike Place Fish Market. This book did prove to be interesting though. It isn't a must read, but was fairly informative.

A staple for someone looking to understand cooking seafood
Excellent book, and one of my favorites.I just purchased a second as I am now keeping the original at a vacation property.Of the few books I chose to pack in my luggage and leave there, this was one of them. Certainly a favorite.

It has a very thorough description of many types of fish and their typical preparation.Terrific as both a reference and a recipe book.Congrats Mark Bittman

Fish-great book
If you are looking for a great book that tells you the best ways to identify and cook fish then this is a great book for you.I bought it for a friend that really likes it.

The best fish cookbook out there
I have tried a number of fish cookbooks, both in English and Chinese, and was not satisfied with any of them. The two main problems: (1) the dishes are too *heavy* - e.g. they use too much butter or heavy cream, or involve deep frying, which I avoid; and (2) they rely too much on the same sets of stereotyped ingredients, e.g. tomato-, cream- or soy sauce-based sauces.

Mark Bittman tends towards light and healthy cooking, which is much more to my taste, and he offers incredible variety from cuisines all over the world. My very favorite salmon recipe is on p. 235, Salmon Roasted with Cilantro "Pesto". Even those not crazy about cilantro may like this one - it's light, delicious, fast and easy to make in a toaster oven, and likely very *different* from any style of salmon you've had before.

Fish cookbooks occupy a crucial niche for me - I don't eat meat and general cookbooks tend to concentrate very heavily on meat and sweets, neither of which interests me. And vegetarian cookbooks by definition include no animal food, but I eat and like fish. So the easiest way to bridge this gap is to get a fish cookbook. The problem was finding a good one. Well, this is definitely the best one I've found. I recommend it highly.

As with How to Cook Everything, many of Bittman's recipes could not have been tested before publishing and seem as though they were concocted at his desk.

Valuable Suggestions
I have read many of S.E. Hinton's books and she does a fine job of making them all stand alone. This is no easy task when a key theme to many of her books are mixed up boys in mixed up family and personal situations. Yet Hinton successfully avoids cross over. "Rumble Fish" leaves many conclusions to the reader, but what stands out for me is the need for boys to have a positive social and home life to be good men. Nicholas R.W. Henning - Australian Author

Disappointed
I really liked the Outsiders but this book was not very good. It seemed liked it was rushed through the whole thing and I didnt feel a connection with any of the characters. I was halfway through the book and it seemed like nothing had happened except a fight and some walking around. At the end I was confused and disappointed. It seemed like it just cut short and I wanted to know what happened to Rusty.(I cant even remember the second part to his name and I just finished the book this morning, thats how unconnected it was)I would not recomend this book to anyone. The Outsiders was sooooo much better!

See the Film First
The first time I read this book I didn't like it as much because I didn't have quite the dark surreal vision of it that Coppola had from the film he made based on this book in my head. I re-read it after watching the movie (which is one of my all time favorites) again recently and had a different view of it. I actually even had the great soundtrack playing in my head most of the time while I was reading it.

Rumble Fish differs from other S.E Hinton books in that most of her books are mainly based around a sensitive intelligent type that is forced to be tough and hard due to bad circumstances whereas this book is through the eyes of a guy that is dumb as a rock, insensitive and not particuarly likable at all. I even have to wonder if the guy is supposed to be brain damaged from being wacked in the head so many times in street fights he is so stupid and forgetful. He totally idolizes his older Brother who is a neighborhood hero to all the local hood types. The narrator is considered a tough guy, if not the toughest, in his age group to all the other young guys in the neighborhood but he just doesn't have the brains, charisma or fighting ability that his older Brother has. There's a lot more to this book of course. One thing I like about Hintons books as they are all seen from a white poor/working class viewpoint, which it is rare that books, fiction or otherwise are written about people of that background.

Set your Mind
This book is great. I would say that this is one of S.E. Hinton's best books. Her style of writing is just so easy to read. Her books are some of the only books I can read. It's not that I can relate to it, and I doubt too many people can that read it. She just makes her books thrilling. I like how her books are all realistic like they didn't happen but they easily could.

S.E. Hinton's books are all about the same genre of people. They are all about teenagers that live in a tough part of a city or they live in a tough going home with no parents or not much of parents. They make for really good stories.

In this book there is a boy named Rusty James and he is like the alpha male in his group. So nobody messes with him and if they do they usually get taught a lesson. Rusty looks up to his brother like an idol; Rusty wants to be just like him. This book has a great story in it and a thrilling ending. This book also has a great moral; it says right in the book, " I found out that if you want to get somewhere in life you just have to set your mind on it and then work like hell till you get there." Which is a great base plan to reach a life long goal or anything.

For my 7th grade book review project, I am writing aboutble Fish, by SE Hinton. The main character in this book is named Tony.He is the leader of his gang. He does not take no as an answer. He will fight anyone who does not listen to whatever he says. He wants to take over the world, until one day it goes too far. This book is good for people who loveand mystery. If you want to know why "Fish" is in the title, you'll have to read this book.

Fun Book
This book has the right amount of text.It's for babies and young toddlers, who have short attention spans.
It's short enough for her to follow to the end. The plastic fish at top that she play with draws her to the book.
I love the nursery edition.

Disappointing for Adults but Fun for Kids
Our one-year-old daughter loves this book.She likes the little fish on top and likes the brightly-colored fish throughout the book.However, my husband and I are disappointed by the lack of creativity ("red fish, blue fish" next page: "black fish, blue fish") and the interrupted rhyming pattern toward the middle.Also, like others have said, the ending is very abrupt, and you're left wondering where the rest of the story is.

This book has everything you could want in one book for your toddler.It is colorful, whimisical and teaches counting. There are only a few words on each page, so it's great for younger readers and for those who need a short book for short attention spans.

Well thought out; excellent illustrations
This book was recommended by my daughter's kindergarten teacher and we have been reading it every night!
The story line is fun--my daughter loves to shout out the last word of each page and the pictures on each page reflect the rhyme pattern.My daughter loves to say the pattern name (ABAB or AAB, etc.) for each drawing on the page.
Great tool for teaching and reinforcing patterns.

It may be educational, but it's really fun to read to my toddler too!
My almost-two-year-old really likes this book - it's fun reading it together and she loves saying "Pop!" It's short and snappy enough to hold her attention. The illustrations are simple but cute. (Sadly, it must go back to the library today, but glad to know I can get it here!)

Very Educational!
I bought this for my 6 year old.She loves to read it over and over and find the patterns--she even labels them AB, ABB, etc.I also plan to use it at school to help teach form to my music students.The art is great and I love how the illustrator uses patterns to match the words!

an essential field guide
This is a must have book for anglers or anyone with a passion for Atlantic saltwater fish. The descriptions are clear and concise and the images have notations to help with species identification.

The most useful guide to fishes of the Atlantic Coast and Gulf of Mexico
This is the single most useful guide to fishes of the Atlantic Coast because it is reasonably comprehensive, portable, accurate, authoritative, and well-illustrated. Other reviews note the lack of color plates in comparison to Peterson guides for birds, for example, but what matters from the standpoint of identification of marine fishes are field marks, which are very well presented in the illustrations in this guide. There are more than 30,000 living species of fishes, about three times the living species biodiversity of birds. Many species of fishes are rare and poorly known, and they span a range of habitats very difficult to sample (e.g., depths below 1000m). Thus, no one is ever likely to generate a completely comprehensive all-color field book for fishes of this region. But this single volume is very close to ideal, which I why my students and I have used it in my ichthyology courses for more than two decades.

Great guide...not so durable binding.
This is a great field guide. Though some would like full color illustrations, variablility in coloration occurs quite often in fish depending on habitat and other factors. The text descriptions are quite clear. The only complaint I have, is the binding isn't very sturdy. I'm on my 4th copy! My field guides go into the field (or in this case on the boat)where the elements will take their toll very quickly on poorly constructed material.

A Field guide for large fish only
This is a field Identification book, If you really want to know what you caught, you need better literature.When you catch smaller fish species, many of the key features listed for them do not pertain to your catch.That, and the book is built to fall apart, with the plates in the center of the book struggling to freedom within a year.

Not your typical Peterson Guide
I have a few Peterson Guides (such as one for birds, and one for reptiles and amphibians) and I swear by them.I have always been able to count on Peterson Guides to provide detailed color illustrations with clearly defined identifying marks.This guide was a huge disappointment.The majority of the illustration plates are in black and white!I have no idea what possessed the editors to settle for a grayscale version from a guide series so well known for its colorful illustrations!(Wish I'd read the review below mine before I purchased this!)

The few color illustration plates are excellent as is usual for Peterson Guides.Even the black and white images are very well drawn (but tremendously less helpful than their color counterparts).The descriptions of each species are generally well-written and helpful, though not as extensive as the descriptions in other Peterson Guides.

In short, you won't find this guide to be totally useless, but it would be worth looking around for (and probably not hard to find) something better.It's clear to me that the Peterson editors either (a.) have a distinct bias towards terrestrial animals and don't care much for ichthyology, or (b.) were in a great rush to finish this guide quickly at the expense of quality.Whatever the explanation, one thing is for sure:the negligence apparent in the making of this guide is very out of character for Peterson. ... excellent spanish book
This book is absolutely awsome, not only because its author is Dr. Seus; it is also because it came in a beautiful edition with hard cover and the best translation in Spanish.
For a little girl who loves Dr. Seus stories and who is learning Spanish as second language, Un Pez, Dos Peces, Pez Rojo, Pez Azul is a great approach to the world of literature in a foreing language.

Great book.
I am a native Spanish speaker and find this book pretty fun to read.I do not agree with some of the other negative reviews and think that the rhymes are nice and catchy, better than other Dr. Seuss books I've seen, and my daughter loves it.

Horrible traslation
One of the worst translations that I have ever read, don't waste your money, if you want some Dr Seus go for Huevos verdes con Jamon, that one has an excellent translation.

Excellent book!
I love this book! The translation is excellent and the rhymes are very funny! I read it to my nieces, who are bilingual, and they enjoyed it as much, if not more, than the English version. I own both the original version and the Spanish translation. Both of them are great!

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, You didn't bother to make it rhyme??
Dr. Seuss is all about rhymes...this literal translation was obviously commissioned by someone only interested in making a few bucks, no consideration for the story or the kids reading it. Unfortunately, I did not realize that when I bought this book.

You think you've had it rough......
It's the story of a strong, smart man who had a very tough life as a child and it could have been a sad story but the way Antwone excelled at everything as an adult proves that you can rise above your environment, that anything is possible when you believe in yourself.Incredible story, very well written, hooray for you Antwone.

Well Told Memoir
So many other 5 stars have been written for this book that I don't have much else to say.I ditto every good thing that was said.

Finding Fish
Finding Fish, by Antwone Fisher, is a passionate and heart wrenching look into the life of the author as a ward of the state. Thankfully, he escapes the terrors of his childhood and eventually finds success. Fisher writes with a distinctive voice. He is able to convey the emotions of the young boy he portrays in the memoir, rather than telling the story through the voice of an adult. The memoir is an honest, and shocking, look into the world of an orphan without anyone to protect him. His father had been shot two months before his birth and his mom is in prison. Throughout his life with the Picketts,his foster parents, Antwone is forced through horrific events that are painful to read about. He is molested at a young age by a babysitter, beaten, mentally abused, and treated like a ghost. He becomes reserved and shy, lacking love and the comfort of a family. Even worse, his social workers are sadly oblivious to the abuse because the Picketts are able to transform into respectable and polite adults when in public. Remarkably, Antwone braves through his torturous childhood, as well as homelessness for a short time, and finds himself in the Navy. This becomes his miracle, and inspires him to do more with his life. He finds himself traveling around the world, educating himself about different cultures as well as teaching himself English with the help of a thesaurus. In comparison to his childhood, Antwone is in paradise. This transition from a hopeless child with no allies in the world to a strong, successful Navy officer illustrates a major theme in the memoir. No matter how horrible somebody's life is, with perseverance and hope it is possible to achieve anything. Although Antwone is thrown into a terrible life, he finds his own success and thankfully escapes his past and finds happiness. This book is an emotional rollercoaster and any reader will become attached to Antwone, rooting for him against the negativity in his life.

FINDING FISH carries a profound impact...
and taught me something. It taught me how much we all share--the need to belong, for family, to search, to question. This book is unexpected tender and this boy's journey impacted my own journey, my own questions of family, of accceptance.

Third Culture Leadership
Have you ever read the bible and had thoughts, notions, and hunches about how you should live a life of love towards others, but had no idea how to do it? Third Culture Believers
"The Monkey and the Fish" is about liquid leadership for a third - culture church, as the subtitle suggests.
The author, Dave Gibbons, relates real life stories of the people of God in all parts of the world, including America, incarnating Christ to those that are marginalized by society and the church. It's both refreshing and inspiring to see what happens when people begin to think and act like Jesus. When personal and church agendas are laid aside so that the love of God can be manifested, it is amazing what God can do.
Though the author doesn't say it, it becomes apparent that evangelical Christianity has botched the mission of God. We say that our top priority is to get people saved, but Jesus said our top priority is to love people. This book illustrates how people come to faith in Christ when they encounter the genuine love and acceptance Jesus offers through his people. It's natural and unforced, no striving to get people to say "the prayer", but trusting the Holy Spirit to do his work with them.
On page 165, Dave Brubaker, a church planter working with the arts community in London says it this way:
"We have talked about the whole conversion experience the church has prescribed, and how that maybe needs to be deconstructed. In our respective places around the world, what we're learning is just the power of showing honest, authentic love and concern for people. As we have been doing that, the response has just been so positive. It's intoxicating for people, and they taste it and they like it. But we often go, "Okay, make sure you sign and fill out this form," or, "Make sure you say this prayer." What we're seeing in London is we can trust completely in God and in his Spirit to be able to work in that person's life in a much more powerful way than we ever could.

This is a book that will make a person in Christian leadership think long and hard.It is very good reading for everyone else, too - gets one to consider going "outside the box."Can't beat the price, either.

Trans-cultural Christianity
This is one of the most talked-about books this year in Christian leadership circles. It is about the need for churches to embrace third-culture attitudes. First culture is the dominant homogeneous culture you live in; second culture is the culture of those who are uncomfortable with the first culture; and third culture is about embracing and affirming all different types of ethnicities and cultures.

Gibbons, who is part Caucasian and part Korean, is the founding pastor of Newsong, a multi-site megachurch with campuses in the US, Mexico City, Bangkok, London and India. His book contains some great inspiration for anyone wanting to catch a vision of how a church can take advantage of globalisation. He says that we need to read authors of different cultures, befriend people who are not like us, identify our neighbours, love without strings attached, and become a church without walls.

The book is reasonably short, inexpensive, and easy to read, and should be considered essential reading for any church leader who cares about God's global mission. The author's cross-cultural credentials are slightly dented by some factual mistakes relating to kiwifruit in chapter 4, and a roundtable discussion in Chapter 7 lurches around unpredictably, but the overall message concerning the church's need for a global outlook is very timely.

Slow service
I orderedmy book, Discus Fish on Janurary 21, 2010 and did not receive this book until 19 days later.The package was small, the book is small, and it easily fit into my mail box, so it wasn't that the item was large or heavy.I was very disappointed that it took so long, especially since the place I ordered it from was in the same state where I live.I will never order anything from that source again. It wasn't a problem with Amazon, but it is a problem with the "book store" where the book came from.

While the title might imply a single-minded effort to drag an unsuspecting man into the net, the book is actually somewhat Zenlike. It will help women to improve their self-images, broaden their interests, and accentuate the unique qualities they possess that will naturally draw good relationships to them. Nakamoto also spends a good deal of time discussing the end of relationships. He shows women how to let go gracefully, with as little pain as possible, so that they can continue to grow without harboring bitterness. He uses several examples from his own life, sharing many of his triumphs and failures with a good-natured sense of humor.

Nakamoto shares one especially funny story about a tight jeans contest where he lost a shapely girlfriend/contestant to judge Clint Eastwood. He writes, I consoled myself with the thought that Deanna must have had a tough choice: Clint Eastwood (People Weekly s 2001 #2 most popular screen actor of all time) or Steve Nakamoto? It could have gone either way, right?

Nakamoto also shares good, solid advice. One especially helpful area is Favorite Fishing Holes: 101 Hot Spots Where the Big Ones Are Biting. It consists of a list of fun and inexpensive activities and places to explore that are bound to be interesting, even if they do not spark a new love affair. Among the many activities that Nakamoto recommends are going to art gallery openings, visiting wineries for wine tasting and tours, and taking city tours or day trips in one s own city or in a nearby town.

Nakamoto does not guarantee eternal love for readers. However, both single women looking for that perfect catch and those seeking to recapture the romance of an exciting relationship will find great value here. fun to read yet insightful and true
I am still reading it, but I so far have been really enjoying it.I have to remind myself to read slowly so I can digest it well. It is so true that you must first improve yourself(especially love yourself) before you can find someone nice (who will love you). I think this boook not only can help dating successful but more important, this book could help women to be the best as they can: be true to themselves, confident, kind, loving and attracive.
It is so fun to read also. Very funny.

Fish metaphor gets annoying
Men are like fish is a metaphor used in this book that, frankly, was okay to begin with but became annoyingly tiresome. Maybe it's because I have no interest in the sport of fishing.

That said, I did learn some valuable things including that, while I have an attractive face and I am an intelligent and good person, I need to work on getting more physically fit and enhancing my femininity; and, therefore, put more wiggle into my bait. What's more, it appears that women are much more accepting of human imperfections than men are, so we are in luck in that we have a wider range of potential mates from which to choose.

The book has some good info but Steve's newer book called Dating Rocks has some of the same info without the annoying fish metaphor. I would recommend reading it instead, even though I'm glad I read both books.

I wish good luck to all women who are doing some self-searching to become better human beings. This effort towards finding self-love might save us from hooking up with the wrong man.

This book is absolute rubbish. It is just page after page of other peoples quotes. You will learn nothing. Don't waste your money.

Offers some good advice, but at times a little cheesy
There is a desire in this book to jam the wisdom of dating into a fairly odd analogy.Men are like fish.The author uses lots of quotes from popular culture, famous people, etc and can be a bit cheesey.BUT,

The sheer number of quotes gives you a sense that you are not alone in this issue.The book is fairly well put together and easy to read.It fixates on how emotionally to become the right sort of person to be in the right sort of place to find and be in love.Unlike a few other books I've read, which are really geared towards people that are totally lost, this one addresses the issues of personal growth.Patience is a key ingredient AND there is a sense that the issue isn't attracting, it's closing and understanding what that means.

I think for the average girl, with average problems, this is a better book than most and hence, 4 stars.
