Product Description
Malta's recent independence was achieved despite a confusion of internal conflicts which must appear puzzling to the outsider. Socialists and Nationalists clash both with each other, and with a Church whose authority is almost medieval. Dr Boissevain has lived for more than two years in Malta and has studied at first hand the conflicting groups in the villages. He examines the importance of the cults of saints and the bitter rivalry between them. The clash of the Church and Labour clubs within the villages and the difficult role of the parish priest are analysed in the framework of Maltese ecclesiastical and secular politics. Both in its vivid description of village festive and political life and in the careful analysis of conflicts and factions, the book makes an important contribution to political anthropology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginners book
Step-by-step, easy to follow instructios, with clear pictures and diagrams to indicate where to find the tools they want you to use. The projects in this book teach the basics in ways that users will be able to put to immediate use for their own projects. I found it especially useful since I have no training at all with any graphics programs, this book really helped me understand what tools were available and how to use them in effective ways.

I cannot stress enough, however, that this is a beginner's book. If you have experience with Fireworks (or probably any other similar program) this may not be the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A value for money purchase
This book starts from the very basics in a clear and well set out format making it one of the value for money books on my shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book
I have been through this book and its companion book for Freehand MX and have the same comment for this one that I had for the Freehand MX version. Almost Great! Thorough enough to be used as a reference but the actual examples need some editing. There was a lack of consistency to simple things like "select both items" being sometimes written and sometimes left to the reader to figure out. Overall, a good book for a beginner who will refer to it often for a reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Tutorial (but not as good as the one for DREAMWEAVER)
I was blown away by the "Training from the Source" tutorial for DREAMWEAVER. That is why I had to have this one for FIREWORKS. I have to admit to being a little disappointed but that is mostly do to the previous book setting the mark so high. This is still a great tutorial to learn the program, especially for someone like me who knows nothing about this subject. This book is designed as an intro, not an advanced course.

A few of the qualities that this series seem to share are clear instructions, easy to read print, illustrations and screen shots that are big enough to be useful and an approach that continues to build on what has been done before. This is especially true with the examples on the enclosed CD.

What disappoints me is that this book is primarily designed from the approach of using FIREWORKS as a stand alone program. There is material that covers the integration with DREAMWEAVER but this material is neither as copious nor as clear as I would have liked. Still, I know a lot more today than I did 2 days ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for beginners
This book is really great if your an absolute beginner. The instructions are easy and the tutorials with the CD make the book a great way to learn fast and easy. Maybe this is not the book you want if you really want to go into Fireworks more. I felt like I needed to know more stuff than the book taught me. There's a lot you can do with Fireworks, but the book doesn't take you all the way. It's a really great way to get from absolute beginner to advanced intermediate. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent step-by-step guide for beginners!
This is a great way to not only learn the technical sides of Dreamweaver and Fireworks 4, but also how to put your site together from start to finish. Most manuals that come with software only explain how to do individual tasks without pulling it all together...this one does.It is easy reading, with a sense of humor, and he often answers questions you think of while you go along. There were a couple of times that a step might be missing, like he'll say "then you should see this," forgetting that you might be in a different view, so just stay alert. This didn't happen often. Also, I did find that some of the Fireworks exercises were beyond what I initially needed to do, but I'll be coming back to those sections when I'm comfortable with my site and want to be more adventuresome...

3-0 out of 5 stars Does the job, but not outstanding
I am just starting the text, and though it seems to contain all I need, I get the feeling that about 30% of the words read are unnecessary. There is way too much friendly talk to make the transition for non-technical users as well as repetition, and unnecessary praising of the program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Beginner Book
I think this book brings you from the basic level of computing/WWW knowledge to a intermediate level.I just received the book today and flipped through the different sections and it looks to be an easy read, yet informative. This book will provide the upmost foundation for Dreamweaver and Fireworks 4 and lead right into Inside Dreamweaver 4 text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, especially for beginners
This is a very well structured book, and gives the novice some background on the web and HTML, which more experienced web designers may want to skim over. I am well versed in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and have been handcoding with Notepad and an HTML Editor for the past three years. I had read about Dreamweaver and Fireworks and decided to learn them. I've gone through the Dreamweaver section of the book so far and have gotten a pretty good feel for the program. I have already gone through two Fireworks books so I will probably go through that section pretty quickly.

The main strengths of this book are:

1. Well structured with a logical progression from one chapter to another.

2. Very few errors unlike some computer books I've worked with. Also I e-mailed the author and got a reply the next day, so he seems committed to helping readers of his book.

3. Little mini reviews and also chapter reviews to make sure you understand each module.

This book is among the best I have seen in the way the infomation is presented. It doesn't cover everything Dreamweaver has to offer but I can't imagine a better book to start out with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Newbies!
I had had very little training in HTML and web design, so I decided to get this book after purchasing D4/F4.Initially I skimmed through the book and tried to jump right into web design, which was a mistake.I went back to the beginning of the book and decided to start over, and it has been smooth sailing ever since! Each chapter in the book is designed to ingrain skills in your head by repeating tasks and building upon them.It is very explanatory and extremely easy to follow. As the book goes along, it assumes you know more and treats you less like a beginner and more like a pro. This is a must have for designers using D4/F4.Highly recommended! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use
This book is very helpful and easy to follow. It's a very nice book for anyone trying to figure out Fireworks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great one!!
Fireworks made easy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Concept to Get Started Fast
Macromedia is clearly devoted to the web page production business. Fireworks is their graphics package that is ideally suited for producing the kinds of images you want on web sites. It is also smoothly integrated into the rest of their packages such as Dreamweaver, which is hands down the preferred web authoring package available at the professional level.

If you're thinking about Fireworks but aren't sure, you can go to the Macromedia site and down load a free trial of the package to see if you like it. As for the literature that comes with it, you will find that this book is a much better option.

The Visual Quickstart Guides us an interesting format where each page has one column of text and another of screen images. The idea is to show and explain at the same time. This is a very easy and quick way to get up and running on a software package. The concept is good, and Sandee Cohen does a great job here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Seriously "Must Have" For the Fireworks User
Just about every time I need a technical manual, especially software based, I head for the 'Bible' series. I've yet to be disappointed. I'm sure every web developer knows that Macromedia is "the" software to use. I know enough about Fireworks to get by without this book, but it helped me to learn a few new things about this version (MX) and it also acts as a wonderful reference tool that I've marked with those little post-it flags in the places I need to regularly reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where's the editor?
This book has a personality crisis because it doesn't know who its audience is. It is far too long and in-depth to be a book for beginners, yet it is too wordy and "cute" to be a particularly useful reference book. I am about halfway through it and I am now skipping over every bit of prose and just reading the tips and figures because I am tired of reading things like, "Until Fireworks, you could never do X!" when "X" is something that we've been able to do in Photoshop (or Corel Draw or Illustrator or whatnot) for years. Fireworks seems to do a nice job of pulling together the main features and functions of a lot of different established programs, but it didn't actually invent these things. All in all, the book does seem to be complete if you are willing to slog through it, but the examples could have been a lot better. The color insert was pretty useless, and a few of the images actually made me cringe - the publisher really should have shelled out a few extra bucks for a professional graphic designer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not for the beginner
If you're new to web design, but are eager to get started with hands-on learning, find another text. This book is intended for the Fireworks scientist who enjoys extremely wordy and granular discussions of specific topics. The author obviously loves writing, because to learn anything with this book, you'll need to do a lot of reading. There are no tutorials, very little practical advice, and the author expects you to already be proficient with computer-graphics terms. He'll extemporate ad-nauseum on a particular subject, and hidden at the end of the last paragraph will be directions on how to access the setting he's discussing. He explains everything, and ties nothing together into a cohesive lesson. At the end of this book you'll ask yourself "okay, how do I use all of these tools to create something?".The author might respond, "hey pal, that's up to you". ... Read more

Product Description
Our best selling Visual QuickStart Guide is now updated and revised to cover the latest features of version 3. Fireworks current features include an omnibus graphic tool set which combines different types of tools into a single interface: vector drawing, "natural media" bitmap tools, text editing, special effects, color management, animation, and HTML linking. It also includes "Live Effects," which are drop shadows, embosses and glows that update automatically. Amazon.com Review
Fireworks has evolved into a versatile application for creating graphics for the Web. Many designers will use it as an alternative to Photoshop and in conjunction with Dreamweaver. Fireworks 3 for Windows & Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide can guide beginners through the maze of tools, palettes, and panels and get them up and running within a few hours.

After a thorough introduction to the user interface, the book covers how each tool and technique works in detail. Much of this may already be familiar to readers with any amount of experience in paint or drawing programs, since the tools and actions are similar. For example, the book shows how to draw vector curves using a pen tool, a skill also needed for Illustrator and Freehand. In other instances, although the actions may be like those in other applications, the methods may differ, like using masks or applying effects. In Fireworks, most of the features are executed from individual panels (floating palettes). The step-by-step style of instruction here, which discusses individual tasks in small portions, is ideal for learning your way around these panels and all their options.

The Visual QuickStart Series is also known for the division of each page into a column of text and a column of illustrations. This edition includes an abundance of pictures and illustrations, so many in fact, that it seems as though no instruction goes without a visual.

A beginner may have difficulty in the chapter on making GIF animations. Without a specific sample project at hand, the text may move a little too fast when explaining frames and tweening. On the other hand, intermediate users who have created animations using shareware apps or Photoshop will have no problems and may find this helpful in adding Fireworks to their arsenal of tools.

The book also covers slicing GIFs, creating rollovers, navigational bars, and even swap-image behavior. There's an excellent series of tables showing all the preset patterns, gradients, brushes, effects, and library images that come with Fireworks 3, as well as an extensive list of keyboard shortcuts. --Angelynn Grant

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, not so good for the experienced.
I was at my local bookstore, looking for something to further my graphic design. I had been working with Fireworks 2 for a few months, and now Fireworks 3 for a week or so. I picked up this book, and I was somewhat disappointed. It was basically a beginner's guide to the program, and someone with more than a month's experience won't really need it. However, it does have some nice tips for someone who knows what they're doing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fireworks 3 visual quickstart guide
I gave it 3 1/2 start cause it doesn't include a CD. You'll have to follow the chapters one by one from scratch making it time consuming. Overall the book is very easy to read. I recomend reading chapt. 1 thru 4 without the computer on. Don't put too mch energy into it, it's just how any image editing software works. still leave the computer off and put enphasis on chapter 14,15,17. Import, export and slices. They are the objective of fireworks. Then turn on your comouter and follow on chapt. 5 thru 13, 16, and 18 thru 19. It teach you how to use fireworks just like you would dreamweaver to create web pages.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Vague
I bought this book, spent an hour or two looking it over, and realizedthat I don't have the time to try and figure out how to apply what theauthor is trying to explain. I needed a true quick start book, with solidexamples of applications. I brought it back and exchanged it for"Fireworks, Fast & Easy Web Development" by Lisa Lee.A muchbetter book for someone who doesn't have a whole lot of time on theirhands. It has solid examples of how to do things like create buttons, optimize images, etc., just what I needed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very weak. Lacks solid information. Don't buy.
This book is the only one I have ever written a negative review on, but this one deserves all the negative it can get. A total waste of money and not worthy of being in the Visual Quick Start Series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Visual is good
What makes Fireworks for Windows and Macintosh 3 a great book is that the material is produced visually. There is truth to the statement that a picture is worth 1,000 words. The author is good at giving the process in astep by step fashion with visuals making it easy to pick up.

My problemwith the book is that it is not presented in a tutorial fashion making itmore of a reference guide. This is fine as I knew that before my purchaseand use it as a reference guide. The book averages two to three pictures apage. +Dana+ ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars glorious tales of excellence
From the stories of Kreigsoberst to La Llorona, when I read this book it expanded my horizons in unexpected ways.

The book unlocks insight into what the ancient Greeks called "arete," meaning, excellence, partcularly in the sense of fulfillment of purpose, and how it manifests as a virtue in a person's life.

Students of history, martial arts, cultural differences, may all find stories in this book which make it a most worthwhile aquisition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disjointed
While there are a few good essays in this book, the whole is disjointed. For fans of Cooper it'll be an insight into the man they will likely enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Un Buen libro para ingresar en este hoobie
Un libro que se debe tener si uno quiere convertirse en un hobista de cohetes. Muy bien explicado y muy documentado, excelente libro.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right on time!
The product came right on time and in good condition as advertised. Its was satisfactory. Cheers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Work of Art
Anyone who examines this book must conclude that its author is a perfectionist. The photography alone is worth the price of this manual even if the purchaser has zero interest in the subject. I think Ansel Adams would have been impressed! If David Sleeter ever does a manual on gardening, I'd buy one.

To the few critics of this work I suggest they are either jealous or have a hidden agenda. Perhaps they should dig out their crayons and write their own book?

4-0 out of 5 stars Good content. The format is too large.
A thorough and well written book about constructing rocket motors on an amateur level. A lot of work has been put in to produce this book. The format, however, is too large, and makes the book a bit clumpsy to use and to bring somewhere you'd want to construct rocket motors (it is a instruction book and should be in a managable size). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Technical Fireworks Book
This book does a decent job with the artistic approach to Fireworks, but it's real power lies in its technical explanations - how to use the automation and advanced development techniques for web graphic design. The author does a wonderful job of explaining some Macromedia mysteries, where certain features would otherwise not be explained. A good example of this is Macromedia's loose and changeable meaning of Alpha Transparency - This term can mean different things in different parts of the program, but it's not documented in the software docs. However, this book points this and other such idiosyncrasies out.

The language is particularly good. The author seems to be in tune with exactly what you might get confused by and almost always takes great care to fill you in on the jargon or concepts. A couple of times he leaves you out in the cold, but only in one or two cases where the content is not critical. Overall, this is the best Fireworks book I've seen and I really hope they write a follow up edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ing
In general computer books are not exciting read, but this book takes it to a new level. Poorly written without good examples. It talks about a function and what it does, but leaves you in the dark on HOW it is done. Do yourself a favor, don't buy this book.

If I could of given it a 0 star rating I would of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced topics on automating and extending Fireworks
From the new features in version X to advanced integration and extensibility issues, Special Edition Using Fireworks X is a comprehensive and visually captivating reference for Web graphics professionals. This "user friendly" instructional reference explores the ways that Fireworks can be used by teams collaborating on content including using Libraries, Symbols, and proper project management techniques It also provides coverage of Fireworks' animation and interactive features (behaviors) including the Live Animation tool. Also discussed is the emerging use of Fireworks as a whole page design/comping tool, as opposed to a tool used for making individual page elements, as well as concern over interface design and usability, which goes hand-in-hand with whole page design issues Special Edition Using Fireworks X provides coverage of image optimization and export options as well as how to use Fireworks in conjunction with Photoshop 6. Advanced topics on automating and extending Fireworks are also covered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!
This book is a great resource for a diverse group of users, from beginners to advanced Web graphics designers. It's perfect for quickly accessing a how-to or looking up a term. 5-0 out of 5 stars World's Best Fireworks...
Without a doubt, the Zambelli Fireworks are spectacular.

When I was young, we were disappointed if windows in nearby houses didn't blow out during the annual Mount Carmel show in a town near their factory.

Most years, the windows blew out.

A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boom boom boom boom!
Wow! What a treat this book is! It's a biography on the Zambelli family, a history and the how-to of fireworks, a cookbook of wonderful recipes for every holiday of the year, and the most colorful presentation of various fireworks show. Here in Louisville (Lawvil to y'all), the Zambellis do "Thunder over Louisville" and it makes your heart stop and mouth drop open. What a thrill! And what a thrill this book is, too. Great writing by Gianni Hayes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably DYNAMITE Book!
I loved everything about this book: From the family history to the manufacturing of fireworks, to how to display them, their history...right up to the recipes. I bought this for my wife for Christmas because of the recipes (yeah, sure), but it is a fantastic biography. The author did truly good job! The Zambelli family is incredible.

5-0 out of 5 stars KABOOM!
This is more than a biography of a famous familyl it's a history of pyrotechnics which also explains the manufacturing and exhibiting of fireworks. It even has holiday recipes that correlate with fireworks. Well written. Interesting family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique Biography
When you find a good book you need to treasure it.
