Product Description

Since Canis lupus familiaris first shared a fire with man more than 15,000 years ago, dogs have been trusted and valued coworkers. Yet the relatively new field of canine ergonomics is just beginning to unravel the secrets of this collaboration. As with many new fields, the literature on working dogs is scattered across several non-overlapping disciplines from forensics and the life sciences to medicine, security, and wildlife biology. Canine Ergonomics: The Science of Working Dogs draws together related research from different fields into an interdisciplinary resource of science-based information.

Providing a complete overview, from physiology to cognition, this is the first book to discuss working dogs from a scientific perspective. It covers a wide range of current and potential tasks, explores ergonomic and cognitive aspects of these tasks, and covers personality traits and behavioral assessments of working dogs. A quick look at the chapters, contributed by experts from across the globe and across the multidisciplinary spectrum, illustrates the breadth and depth of information available in this book.

Traditionally, information concerning working dogs is mostly hearsay, with the exchange of information informal at best and non-existent at worst. Most books available are too general in coverage or conversely, too specific. They explain how to train a service dog or train a dog to track, based on training lore rather than empirical methods verified with rigorous scientific standards. This book, drawing on cutting edge research, unifies different perspectives into one global science: Canine Ergonomics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary Book
One of the most startlingly things I learned in this book is the possibility of trained detector dogs revolutionizing medical practice. The current research suggests that dogs trained to detect breast cancer from breath samples may actually exceed the detection level of radiologists using mammography. The patient simply needs to breathe into a tube which the dog then sniffs. No painful breast compression, no risk of exposure to radiation, and the dog works for biscuits and the chance to play, not $400,000 or more like a radiologist. If we're worried about skyrocketing medical costs in America, maybe the people calling the shots should read Helton's book. Dogs are already used to keep us safe at Airports and to prevent people from smuggling in drugs or foreign pests. The use of dogs in medicine could be revolutionary, thanks Dr. Helton.
Canine Ergonomics: The Science of Working Dogs is THE book on working dogs. Helton has brought together an immensely diverse set of the world's leading experts on dogs to create the first scientific book on working dogs available. Contributors include: Peter Pongracz, one of the world's leading researchers on canine social cognition; Samuel Gosling, the world's leading authority on animal personality and dog temperament; Allen Goldblatt, Irit Gazit, and Joseph Terkel, the world's leading experts on canine explosive detection; Michael Davis, a world expert on canine exercise physiology, sled dogs and canine athletes; Richard Engeman, pioneer whose work on using dogs to prevent the spread of invasive species, especially brown treesnakes in the Pacific, has saved countless environments; Alexander Ferworn, who has pioneered the interface of technology with working dogs, essentially the father of what you might call canine cyborgology; Paul Feltovich, expert on expertise; Deborah Smith, pioneer of conservation dogs; Natalie Sachs-Ericsson, authority on assistance dogs, etc., etc. Not to mention Helton himself, whose own research is cutting edge. The book covers almost every facet of working dogs. The book is full of interesting factual information and is definitely the book to get if you are interesting in the REAL SCIENCE of dogs.

Product Description
Moving from theory into practical reality, ergonomics has come of age as a useful tool for generating safe, comfortable, and productive working environments. Tackling both the simple and complex aspects of a variety of workplaces, Office Ergonomics: Practical Applications demonstrates how to create offices that accommodate all workers. The book contains practical advice on how to maintain an office environment that promotes a healthy, safe, and efficient workforce.

Covering workstation design, selection, layout, and use, the book details the impact of computers on worker well-being, particularly when used under unfavorable conditions, and discusses how ergonomics can accommodate disabled workers. The author emphasizes the need to offer ‘protection’ to people involved in manual handling in offices, an issue that is frequently overlooked, and offers advice on how to work satisfactorily in non-office environments. She explores the possible negative outcomes, such as back pain, headaches, and upper limb disorders, of a poorly designed workstation.

Walking you through all the features of an office, the book provides insight into the potential problem areas that workers often encounter. The book explains how to identify suitable workstation furniture, test it, trial it, and introduce the final selection so the workforce accepts it. The author draws on first-hand experience dealing with difficulties in many types of office situations to provide straightforward, easily applicable advice on how to improve the workplace to reduce the likelihood of workers experiencing discomfort, ill-health, and dissatisfaction. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Useless without other resources, (and then still not worth purchasing!)
I am a professor who teaches ergonomics and had purchased this book in the hopes of finding some new ideas to introduce into my labs.Unfortunately, this book is completely useless unless you already own (or can borrow) the other books that they continually reference in their lab descriptions.(e.g. Barnes, 1980, and Konz, 1990).These books are 20-30 years old, so why should the authors assume that you have access to these other textbooks?Their methods and descriptions of the equipment set-up, refer to these other books, so unless you have them, you won't be able to even try the labs.

I actually had access to both of these books, but even with those references I find this lab manual to be worthless. They "simplify" formulas without ever stating that they are "rounding" the constants, and don't explain where these formulas come from.(Saying that 1.96 squared = 4, may be OK in some settings, but students will never associate "two standard deviations away from the mean in a normal distribution" if all they see is the constant "4".)Also when talking about machine utilization vs idle time, "p" is typically used to denote a "proportion" so the values would be bounded between 0 and 1.This book assumes you are using a percent, but never explains that "p" is not being used differently.Without taking the time to breakdown the formulas, I would have never figured out why the values were so wildly out of the ball park.

I can't see this manual being useful for anyone:it doesn't give enough information for a novice to learn much, and there are so many inconsistencies and incomplete thoughts that an expert is better off making a lab exercise up on their own. ... Read more
