Editorial Review Product Description This practical book reflects the new technological emphasis that permeates differential equations, including the wide availability of scientific computing environments like Maple, Mathematica, and MATLAB; it does not concentrate on traditional manual methods but rather on new computer-based methods that lead to a wider range of more realistic applications. The book starts and ends with discussions of mathematical modeling of real-world phenomena, evident in figures, examples, problems, and applications throughout the book. For mathematicians and those in the field of computer science and engineering. Customer Reviews (31)

Editorial Review Product Description Few books on Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) have the elegant geometric insight of this one, which puts emphasis on the qualitative and geometric properties of ODEs and their solutions, rather than on routine presentation of algorithms. From the reviews: "Professor Arnold has expanded his classic book to include new material on exponential growth, predator-prey, the pendulum, impulse response, symmetry groups and group actions, perturbation and bifurcation." --SIAM REVIEW Customer Reviews (11)

No doubt, the book is good
Concise, well written
excellent book
An excellent text ... in 1970, not in 2003 Arguably, ODE is a geometry course in disguise and not a collection of "party tricks" as it is often portrayed in older texts.Analytical methods are clean and easy to convey in the classroom but, frankly, they never appear in the "real world". If you plan to (or do) encounter ODE's in your chosen field you'd do better to spend lots of time looking at qualitative and numerical techniques, i.e., a more up to date approach. Coddington did a great job with the subtopics he did address but in the late sixties it would have been difficult, if not impossible, to really provide the reader with a solid feel for the depth and breadth of the subject.
A great Introduction or review. |
