Product Description
The second edition of the Environmental Engineering Reference Manual is the most current, comprehensive review for the all-objective environmental PE exam. Developed in response to the current test specifications and input from many recent examinees, this manual provides the topical review, the solved example problems, the tables of data, and other resources you need to pass this exam.

The Exam Information You Need

Michael Lindeburg's introduction describes the current PE exam format and the topics covered on the exam. He offers many suggestions to help you prepare for it--from planning your study schedule to knowing what items to take with you to the exam.

The Review You Need

ENVRM2 prepares you for every topic you are likely to see on the current exam. Several chapters have been updated with new information and rewritten for added clarity. There are two new appendices. Hundreds of solved example problems reinforce the concepts in the text. A full glossary, with new entries, defines terms that may be unfamiliar. Whatever you need to review, chances are excellent you'll find it here.

The Data You Need

Hundreds of tables, charts, and figures make this a one-stop resource for the exam. Having ENVRM2 with you in the exam cuts down considerably on the number of other specialized resources you'll need. You won't have to juggle 10 different books to find what you need.

The Practice You Need

In the companion Practice Problems (ISBN 1-888577-99-1), more than 370 problems are coordinated to the topics in ENVRM2, giving you lots of opportunity to test your skills. Complete solutions are included.

A Comprehensive Glossary

When you confront a word that doesn't look familiar, go to ENVRM2's glossary for a quick definition.

And a Great Index, So You Can Find It All Fast!

During the exam, when you need to look something up, you can't afford to waste time finding it. The detailed, cross-referenced index in this book guarantees that you'll find what you're looking for--quickly and easily.

All Known Errata Corrected

All of the errata that have been identified in ENVRM are corrected in ENVRM2. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars simply the best...reference
As everyone has said, this is the most important book...be sure to check out Amazon Listmania for other useful books for the Environmental PE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Review and Reference Book
This book was very useful in preparing for the PE and serves as a good reference during the exam.I would not bank on it as the only reference, but it serves as a good supporting reference book. There are no example problems in the book, and it simply covers the potential topics that might appear on the test in a very broad sense. It helps to target studying on topics that you might not use everyday or have not seen since undergrad.I recommend the purchase of the book, but would look for a used copy as it is rather pricey!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Review
This book provides a good overview of problems, but bring extra reference material to the exam. This book only shows one way of doing problems and there are easier methods out there. However, this book does provide a good general reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars FOR NON-UNDERGRADUTE ENGINEERS
My undergraduate was in Geography. My Masters in Environmental Engineering.I am not good at math, and formulas with greek letters still make me tense inside.Having said this, here are the books you need to concentrate on to pass this exam the first time.

1.This book.It needs to be your centerpiece, your touchstone. You need to know this book, and especially the tables and appendices.Location, Location, Location is so important, know where everything is in this book.Make this book part of your life.Travel with it, sit with it, take it on your 10 minute coffee breaks... just know this book.

2.Next: 101 Solved Engineering Problems. This book has the most realistic PE Problems.Do them all. They are categorized by type so you must write the page from Lindeberg next to the problem in this book for quick cross reference. This is your best book for quickly finding an example of what you are trying to solve on the test.

3.Next: Lindeberg Practice Problems. Also good, but not as good as 101 (above).Use this as a reference. It aligns with the Lindeberg Hard Cover for quick cross reference.

4. Last: Environmental Engineering Practice Exams (Schneiter).Do all the problems. It looks like a Lindeberg, but it isn't.Like 101 Solved Problems, you must cross-reference the problems with there topic location in Lindeberg Hard Cover.Questions are not in a particular order (4 practice exams, level about right), but questions are in random order which makes look-up during exam tough.

5.Environmental Law Handbook (Sullivan).Need this for the regulatory, and statutory questions.Find a good OSHA book too.

6.Last: Environmental Engineering Calculations (Lee & Lin). This book is expensive and big, but it is a good fail safe. What I liked about it is it presented things differently than Lindeberg, in case I didn't understand where Lindeberg was coming from.

7.I HATE CONVERSIONS, and the test is full of them.If you hate conversions, buy Lindeberg's Engineering Conversions. It is a time saver.

You do not have time to use even all of these references.Just don't show up with a heck of a lot more. You need to drill, drill, drill, on the problems so when you see them on the PE, it is like regurgatation.Lindeberg Hard Cover will covers everything you need to know... this book is your centerpiece! ... Product Description
Environmental Law and Policy is a user-friendly, concise, inexpensive treatment of environmental law. Written to be read rather than used as a reference source, the authors provide a broad conceptual overview of environmental law while also explaining the major statutes and cases. The book is intended for four audiences - students (both graduate and undergraduate) seeking a readable study guide for their environmental law and policy courses; professors who do not use casebooks (relying on their own materials or case studies) but want an integrating text for their courses or want to include conceptual materials on the major legal issues; and practicing lawyers and environmental professionals who want a concise, readable overview of the field. For the Third Edition, new chapters have been written on climate change and energy, exploring the important developments in these rapidly changing areas. The first part of the book provides an engaging discussion of the major themes and issues that cross-cut environmental law. Starting with the first chapter's brief history of environmentalism in America, the second chapter goes on to explore the importance and implications of basic themes that occur in virtually all environmental conflicts, including scientific uncertainty, market failures, problems of scale, public choice theory, etc. It then presents three dominant perspectives in the field that drive policy development - environmental rights, utilitarianism, and environmental justice. Chapter Three fills in the remaining legal background for understanding environmental protection, reviewing the theory of instrument choice, the basics of administrative law, core concepts in constitutional law (e.g., takings, the commerce clause), and the doctrines associated with how citizen groups shape environmental law (such as standing). The second part of the book examines the substance of environmental law, with separate sections on each of the major statutes. International issues such as ozone depletion, climate change, and transboundary waste disposal are also addressed. These chapters build on the themes and conceptual framework laid down in the first part of the text in order to integrate the discussion of individual statutes into a broad portrait of the law. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazon is the best
When I placed my order for this class, Environmental Policies, I inadvertently ordered the book for my next class, Twentieth-Century Europe, instead and did not realize it until the Thursday before my class started, which started on that Tuesday, I called the customer service line and spoke with a representative and I received my book on that Wednesday, a day after class started.Again Amazon is the best place to order your books.
The book Environmental Policy Paradox is a book with great references and gives great insight into what is going on with in our environment and the policies behind them. This is a very interesting book, it helps to understand the paradoxes that are involved in policy making and what is behind the decisions that are made regarding our environment.

Product Description
In this expanded and revised edition of a fresh and original case-study textbook on environmental ethics, Christine Gudorf and James Huchingson continue to explore the line that separates the current state of the environment from what it should be in the future. "Boundaries" begins with a lucid overview of the field, highlighting the key developments and theories in the environmental movement. Specific cases offer a rich and diverse range of situations from around the globe, from saving the forests of Java and the use of pesticides in developing countries to restoring degraded ecosystems in Nebraska. With an emphasis on the concrete circumstances of particular localities, the studies continue to focus on the dilemmas and struggles of individuals and communities who face daunting decisions with serious consequences. This second edition features extensive updates and revisions, along with four new cases: one on water privatization, one on governmental efforts to mitigate global climate change, and two on the obstacles that teachers of environmental ethics encounter in the classroom."Boundaries" also includes an appendix for teachers that describes how to use the cases in the classroom. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An insightful and scholarly read, highly recommended
As the world expands, its natural resources are in more debate than ever. "Boundaries: A Casebook in Environmental Ethics" discusses the current environmental landscape in the eyes of business and the law and how respect for the environment and maintaining its integrity and allowing it to continue to provide for it in the future. But privately owned water, climate change, forests, and more are the topics that will plan the world and its growth in the future. Product Description
The idea of sacrifice is the unspoken issue of environmental politics. Politicians, the media, and many environmentalists assume that well-off populations won't make sacrifices now for future environmental benefits and won't change their patterns and perceptions of consumption to make ecological room for the world's three billion or so poor eager to improve their standard of living. The Environmental Politics of Sacrifice challenges these assumptions, arguing that they limit our policy options, weaken our ability to imagine bold action for change, and blind us to the ways sacrifice already figures in everyday life. The concept of sacrifice has been curiously unexamined in both activist and academic conversations about environmental politics, and this book is the first to confront it directly.

The chapters bring a variety of disciplinary perspectives to the topic. Contributors offer alternatives to the conventional wisdom on sacrifice; identify connections between sacrifice and human fulfillment in everyday life, finding such concrete examples as parents' sacrifices in raising children, religious practice, artists' pursuit of their art, and soldiers and police officers who risk their lives to do their jobs; and examine particular policies and practices that shape our understanding of environmental problems, including the carbon tax, incentives for cyclists, and the perils of green consumption. The Environmental Politics of Sacrifice puts "sacrifice" firmly into the conversation about effective environmental politics and policies, insisting that activists and scholars do more than change the subject when the idea is introduced.

You will learn a lot of different topics about the environment(both natural and social, and their relationships), and it is easy to review your study because the writer gives the key concepts and review questions in each chapter. Product Description
This is the definitive text in a market consisting of senior and graduate environmental engineering students who are taking a chemistry course. The text is divided into a chemistry fundamentals section and a section on water and wastewater analysis. In this new edition, the authors have retained the thorough, yet concise, coverage of basic chemical principles from general, physical, equilibrium, organic, biochemistry, colloid, and nuclear chemistry. In addition, the authors have retained their classic two-fold approach of focusing on the aspects of chemistry that are particularly valuable for solving environmental problems, and laying the groundwork for understanding water and wastewater analysis-a fundamental basis of environmental engineering practice and research. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Title is deceiving
Despite the equal treatment in the Intro, which misleads the reader that there will be air and solid waste chemistry, there is practically no in-depth discourse on these areas, as if they are not part of the subject. The basic Ideal Gas and Henry's Laws are covered handbook style, but in the chapters on Nitrogen and Sulfates, there is not a single mention of SOx and NOx, nor any discussion on composting and two pages on biodegradation. The title is misleading..should be Environmental Chemistry for Water Treatment. And the section on Total Alkalinity is designed to confuse the student. Many of you know what I mean. There is a ton of texts in this general area, and the best intermediate (and appropriately titled) one is by Spiro and Stagliani.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the worst chemistry text ever.Period.
As a chemist with a bachelor's and a doctorate, I've seen quite a few books on the subject.I can say with 100% certainty that this is the worst chemistry text ever. This book spews equations at the reader but does not connect any of the concepts.Key steps are left out of the explanations. The reader is left wondering how the authors got to the end of a multi-step problem in one step.Books like this one are what make students hate chemistry.Do yourself a favor and get any other chemistry book.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you want to know it all....
If you want to know it all about chemistry, this is the book for you.Covers general, physical, equilibrium, organic, bio-, colloid and nuclear chemistry in addition to all the environmental and wastewater chemistry.Take the time to read the chapters slowly and carefully, as almost every sentence contains vital information that you have to know.Fairly easy to follow and the example problems give good explanations.Downsides are that there are very few pictures and there could be more example problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced piece of junk
What a terrible book. I am currently taking an environmental chemistry course, and I'm learning more from my freshman Chem 101 notes and wikipedia than I am from this book. The chapters are too brief to even teach a topic, the examples aren't explained well, you have no idea what is truly going on because facts are simply thrown at you, and overall, this book makes you hate environmental chemistry.

Additionally, the book is exorbitantly priced, as there are NO illustrations whatsoever and the inside looks like some cheap international edition - no color, maybe a scatter plot here and there. It is impossible to visualize any concepts that the book discusses. The authors are probably snoozing in their mansions right now as miserable students attempt to learn from this worthless piece of trash. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.

Product Description
Global environmental change represents an immediate and unprecedented threat to the food security of hundreds of millions of people, especially those who depend on small-scale agriculture for their livelihoods. As this book shows, at the same time, agriculture and related activities also contribute to climate change, by intensifying greenhouse gas emissions and altering the land surface. Responses aimed at adapting to climate change may have negative consequences for food security, just as measures taken to increase food security may exacerbate climate or other environmental change. The authors show that his complex and dynamic relationship between climate change, agriculture and food security is also influenced by additional factors. Agricultural and food systems are heavily influenced by socioeconomic conditions, which in turn are affected by multiple processes such as macro-level economic policies, political conflicts and the spread of infectious diseases.

This book provides a major, accessible synthesis of the current state of knowledge and thinking on the relationships between global environmental change and food security. While some other books look at the links between climate change and agricultural production, they do not extend this to food security. In contrast, this book addresses the broader issues, based on a novel food system concept and stressing the need for actions at a regional, rather than just an international or local, level. It reviews new thinking which has emerged over the last decade, and looks forward towards adaptation and mitigation strategies for the next decade. ... Read more

Product Description
When Bill Clinton signed an Executive Order on Environmental Justice in 1994, the phenomenon of environmental racism--the disproportionate impact of environmental hazards, particularly toxic waste dumps and polluting factories, on people of color and low-income communities--gained unprecedented recognition. Behind the President's signature, however, lies a remarkable tale of grassroots activism and political mobilization. Today, thousands of activists in hundreds of locales are fighting for their children, their communities, their quality of life, and their health.

From the Ground Up critically examines one of the fastest growing social movements in the United States, the movement for environmental justice. Tracing the movement's roots, Luke Cole and Sheila Foster combine long-time activism with powerful storytelling to provide gripping case studies of communities across the U.S--towns like Kettleman City, California; Chester, Pennsylvania; and Dilkon, Arizona--and their struggles against corporate polluters. The authors effectively use social, economic and legal analysis to illustrate the historical and contemporary causes for environmental racism. Environmental justice struggles, they demonstrate, transform individuals, communities, institutions and even the nation as a whole. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enviromental justice and grassroots advocacy
Anyone interested in community organizing, legal advocacy on behalf of community groups, and environmental justice work will benefit from this book's in-depth analysis of the struggles and achievements of neighborhood groups battling environmental injustice, and its valuable insights into community organizing strategies and the role of lawyers and the legal system in promoting social change.Although the authors fully acknowledge the prevalence of racism in our society and the lack of easy fixes to the problems faced by disadvantaged communities, they nevertheless convey an inspiring sense of idealism and optimism about the future possibilities for "the movement".

5-0 out of 5 stars Environmental Justice
The story tells about history and environment racism. It has a very good idea of racism. It also talks about environmental justice. People would like this book. Two thumbs and eight fingers up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Environmental Justice
For those people who want a wide-ranging introduction to the environmental justice movement and its legal arm, this is the place to turn. Written by a movement lawyer activist and a legal academic, this book captures the social and legal evolution of the environmental justice movement in a way that highlights the work of the communities themselves. Vigorously written, the book would be worth the price just for the chapter on transformative politics and its comprehensive annotated bibliography. A must have. ... Read more

This book is very informative and important for anyone working in the environmental field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Textbook Review
This book was for a class I'm taking this semester and all of the articles in it have been really interesting. Environmental Ethics encompasses so many different subject areas and this book has incorporates so many different points of view that I feel like both sides of each topic covered have been equally represented.

3-0 out of 5 stars The best among a bad bunch
This anthology is well organized and contains a few gems, but many of the articles and book excerpts are terribly outdated, and some read like bad op-ed pieces in a local newspaper. This is unfortunate, since the subject is an important one.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!
When I first looked over the book, I wasn't overly impressed at first and thought that it was going to be a hard and boring read.I was completely wrong! It is the favorite among my textbooks now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent condition
The book I received was in excellent condition. Was pleased to find it for a reasonable price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest according to this teacher
I am a high school teacher who has used this text for six years, teaching a junior/senior elective to average students. It has a nice coverage, including both Earth Science and Environmental Science topics. But I feel that in the process of trying to explain complex issues for lower level students, the author has left out too much--I find that my students read the chapters and then need me to fill in a lot of information so that the summary-style information presented here actually makes sense to them.Over the years I have come to rely on this text less and less, and would select another one if I could.

Product Description
The Environmental Case gives readers a unique, first-hand feel for some of the most interesting and illuminating controversies in U.S. environmental policymaking--including the disaster at Love Canal, the dispute over snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park, and the global warming debate. Through 16 carefully constructed cases,Layzer covers the spectrum of environmental issues, from habitat conservation, air and water pollution, and overfishing to environmental justice and urban growth management. Each case elucidates various aspects of the U.S. political system but is also linked to the others by two main themes: environmental conflicts are, at heart, conflicts between advocates with fundamentally different values, and the way problems are framed in politics plays a central role in shaping how those values get translated into policies.

This second edition showcases all 12 of the original cases, thoroughly revised and updated. In addition, Layzer has added four new cases:

  • Community activism propels the Dudley Street Neighborhood Association to fight for environmental justice and equitable redevelopment of a once-distressed area in the heart of Boston.
  • The use of snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park divides environmentalists into bitterly opposing camps: those who regard parks as playgrounds and support unlimited motorized access, and those who advocate more conservative management that emphasizes protection of the park's flora, fauna, and quiet serenity.
  • In the tuna/dolphin and shrimp/turtle disputes, competing advocates debate whether U.S. environmental protection measures constitute non-tariff barriers to trade and, more broadly, whether trade liberalization is good for the environment.
  • Opponents of growth management campaign to undermine the city of Portland's strict policies curbing urban sprawl, the most stringent in the nation.

Layzer provides maps, tables, figures, questions to consider, recommended readings, and useful websites to help readers think critically and actively about the issues raised in each case and facilitate further research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Environmental Case 2nd ed
Very well written account of key historical events. Not a dry account either, very interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Environmental Policies
I was pleased to recieve my book in two days, its in good shape, and the previous owner did a good job underlining the major points with notes added in the margins that are helpful to me.Its better than having a new book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting case studies. helpful learning aid
The cases are much more interesting than the accompanying book about Environmental policy. I found it slightly wordy and left-leaning, which I expected, but the content is good. It might benefit by offering more about the other side. I am an environmentalist and agree with all the points they make, but I feel like I would benefit most by learning about a perspective that I don't relate to as well. You have to know the opposition if you want to be equipped to fight them.

good read... a little lengthy, but makes for great discussion in class (if students actually read, which the length definitely limits -30 small font pg chapters-) ... Read more

Non-technical language encourages greater understanding of these often complex issues, and thought-provoking 'Delving Deeper' exercises are included, increasing engagement with the text and enabling students to apply what they have learned. A new chapter on the chemistry basics of pollution links to sections on toxicology and risk assessment, helping students understand concerns over chemicals and their regulation. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I bought this book as a reference for a college project I did about air pollution. It turned out to be the most valuable resource I had. Hill presents sophisticated information in an easy-to-understand manner. This book also made me realize the huge connection between air pollution and many other issues that the world faces today, and it helped me create a straight-forward list of actions my class mates could take to lower their personal contributions to air pollution. I got an "A" on my project, and I have a much better understanding of how my everyday choices cause air pollution, the consequences of those choices, and what I can do about it.
Furthermore, even though I focused on the sections involving air pollution, this book also has great information on other types of pollution such as water and solid waste. It is a great introduction to the pollution problem and makes a wonderful resource for a project, an environmental science class, or just personal curiosity. ... Read more
