very mediocre
not an engineering book at all. there are some half decent rules of thumb that any competent designer would know intuitively anyway, but you need to get by the author's annoying lame attempts at humor and his bragging to absorb them. some explanations are darn misleading and wrong, especially for anyone not having a background in physics or engineering. figures could be better to help people not familiar with the topic. for example, the base, emitter, and collector should at least be labeled when introducing transistors. on a positive note, the price of the book is reasonable at less than $20.00.

Good book!
The first chapter is worth the price. It emphasizes the KISS principle in EE. When actually building something, always, ALWAYS, **ALWAYS**, check the basics first. Ohm's law is king. When getting into, or back into, building circuits, stick your multi-meter or silly scope in and see what's going on. It is sooo cool to build something and actually have it work and this book is a great help in doing just that.

I bought the book by chance, thinking I would get some elementary information about Power systems which I am not extremely familiar with.

After reading up to chapter 2, I thought I am extremely lucky having read this book, and it ought to be recommended to First year Electronics Engineering students, Lecturers and TA.

I enjoyed the author's unprecedented (in a technical book) down to earth in his writing style (which what make this book stand out) and the information presentation (voltage divider amazing explanation, Real life examples (situation) which an engineer is faced with...),

indeed the book is not perfect later chapter's needs some improvements, the book is NOT intended to be comprehensive reference book i.e. art of electronics...

However the book makes sure understand the basic concepts and Fill the Gabs (interconnect the ideas) no other book on electronics have ever tried,

If new edition would be published in future I'll buy it.

However I think you will never regret reading it.

I bought the book because I was looking to enhance my practical knowledge in the electrical engineering field of study. Not only do I feel that the book helped me to accomplish that, but I gained much more. First, from the first chapter to the last chapter, there were thumb rules, principals, illustrations and examples to help make electrical engineering less formidable to study ( something that is not common place in engineering school). Second, the book gives advice that can help you to make yourself more marketable to potential employers. Third, the book gives practical advice for success on the job for managers as well as employees. Finally, Mr. Ashby was willing to answer any questions concerning the book or pertaining to the field of electrical engineering in general. I thought the book was worth every penny.

Perfect for engineering majors
This book has everything you would expect for engineering. A must have for Engineering majors. And it's cheep!

Truly fantastic reference.
I must admit here at the beginning that I am a bit of a snob when it comes to this type of book.I have reference books dating back a century for the sole reason that I do not trust nor like modern works.The current trend in reference is to provide only that information which will provide the reader with exactly what they want at that exact moment.This methodology requires that the reader return continually to the reference, wasting their time and energy.Older works provide a broader view of given topics and therefore tend to be held in my favor.This work may well be - in my opinion - the last of the great engineering references.

As stated by another reviewer, this work does an excellent job of covering most of the topics and information normally contained within a four-year mechanical engineering degree.This is not to say it is an apt replacement for a degree, just an excellent accessory to one.

Unlike the majority of generalized engineering references, this publication surpasses the norm of a mishmash of datasheets cribbed from manufacturers.The information contained is highly valuable, universally applicable and beautifully organized.That being said, it is true that the content is highly codified and would be of little value to those individuals who are unfamiliar with 'higher' level mathematics or engineering.

There are those in the engineering community who will find this reference lacking in specific topics - say, technical drafting, GD&T or materials science - but on the whole it is truly superb.

My only concern after having owned it for twenty-four hours is how I am going to reinforce the binding to keep the book from falling apart from too much use...

A good reference, even for the PE Exam
This little book is a good tool to add to your tool box.It has a fairly complete tabulation of formulas and even goes into some depth explaining them, but not too much.The only reason it got 4 vs 5 stars for therating was that the index is not cross referenced.I got the book as an aid for my first attempt at the PE Exam, and it earned its way on several questions- mechanics of materials especially.I strongly recommend this book to anyone in engineering who needs a pocket guide.

A must have!
This book is just awesome!

First thing you notice when you open the box: it's tiny!
The book measures about 11.5x15.5 CM for a thickness of 3 CM.
This format makes it very easy to carry around!

It's packed with LOADS of info which cover so many fields! Plus it's printed on 1 side only, which gives you some space to add notes. The table at the beginning (literally at the beginning - on the cover!) makes finding the info you're looking for very easy: each section is designated by a letter. In each section the progression is the same: from the basics up to the most advanced.

Very very handy, a must have! I which I had it when I was studying engineering man !! There's basically almost everything you need in there! Looking through it I was amazed at all the stuff that was coming back to my memory!

The hardcover is good, it makes the book strong (and feel strong).

I think the best feature of this book is that it covers many subjects, with a broad range of complexity level. That means whether you're just looking for some basic information to refresh your memory or get up to date with something, or if you are looking for some serious formulas and calculation, it's in there!
I know that I will probably not use much of the advanced calculation presented, but I might come across a few, and this little book is gonna make the thing easy :)
It's an excellent way to refresh your memory!

Useful Supplement
This textbook on materials science has thus far been a good and helpful supplement to my chemical engineering materials course. The concise explanations and full color illustrations have really helped me to fully grasp the material (no pun intended).

Should not be part of the course work for someone persuing a materials science degree
Don't waste your money. William D. Callister has rewritten this book into many editions, some of which occur under different titles.The price for this book also seems to be increasing disproportionately with the addition of valuable information (the book is just overpriced).I would recommend this book to anyone perusing a degree other then materials science.The book does provide a good amount of breadth and is a good reference if this is the only materials science course work that you will ever do.If you are a materials scientist then taking a class with this book as the primary text will only result in redundancy.The book is an overview of processing and properties that doesn't provide enough background theory and explanation to develop an understanding of materials science.I used this book in my sophomore year in my very first materials science class and it is my understanding that most other materials science programs use this book in the same fashion.The catch of the book is that until you have studied thermodynamics, crystallography, and mechanical properties in your later years of study this book only forces you to memorize rules, properties, and theories without understanding why or how such things exist.The book couldn't even be called a top down approach to materials science because it doesn't go down at all.All of the information in this book will be reiterated in later course work using other texts that will actually help you to understand in a more complete way the concepts of materials science.

This book is a must have for civil engineers.I wish I would have purchased a copy when I was an undergrad.I find myself reading and reviewing topics from it almost every night as if it were a bible.It also introduces you to other must have references.

Excellent Reference for PE Exam and Work
This is an excellent reference for the Civil PE exam, both morning and afternoon.I took the Construction afternoon session, and still used this book extensively.The index is great, and I recommend printing out a separate copy and putting it ina 3-ring binder.You can then have the index open and be flipping through the book at once.This book is fairly technical, and there are only limited examples throughout, so it is difficult to use to learn a new subject or concept (especially during the PE exam).The All-in-One PE Exam guide was a better reference for learning a new concept on the spot, as it is simpler and easier to read (although not as detailed and with an inferior index to the CERM).
Overall, I took the CERM, the All-in-One, the Rajapakse Construction Module (worthless), the NCEES problems and solutions, and about half of the listed Construction design standards (I wish that I had had them all).
I would rate this book as a must-buy and must-take for the PE Exam.

Excellent reference for the PE exam
I have an older version of this reference manual, and it was extremely helpful for review and for taking with me to the PE exam.While it is not the only manual you may need for the exam, I found it extremely helpful for more than half of my PE exam, especially the problems that I was not familiar with because they were from disciplines outside of mine.I still needed the problem solutions books in a few instances, and needed my discipline specific references for the afternoon part of the exam, but the CE Reference Manual is definitely a must-have reference since it consolidates the information for quick look-up during the exam.It's pretty much an essential for the AM part of the exam. ... seriously, not worth the money
it's been said before, but it bears repeating:

the text itself is understandably a bit short in explaining details that you should already know; after all, all these topics would never fit into a single book otherwise.i say this, even though it still frustrates the hell out of me when i get stumped.

the solutions manual is a different story.when i got it in the mail, i immediately knew it would be useless.i didn't even need to open it to know that much.very few problems are covered, and without detail.it's not worth carrying around and it's not worth the price.

Kreyszig will live forever in our hearts
It's really sad to know that Professor Kreyszig died unexpectedly on December 12, 2008 during a trip to Europe. Nevertheless, his scientific legacy will remain with us forever. Besides its target audience (i.e., traditional engineers), also I strongly recommend this book to any wannabe financial economist or quant, due to the pedagogical treatment of this book about tons of math concepts and techniques that are bread-and-butter in modern finance (linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, Fourier Transforms, complex analysis, and so forth).The mastery of the material covered in this book is a prerequisite to start the study of stochastic differential equations and other advanced concepts in financial mathematics that are not included in this book.

Must read for young professionals.
This is a great book filled with good advice for young engineers and other professionals entering the workplace.

Life Saver
I read this book in 1990 when I started my Engineering career.I purchased copies of it for the engineers in my department at the time and have always remembered it's advice.I have re-read it several times and and count this little book as one of my most valuable posessions.I still have my original, beaten and worn.

A timeless gem
This 60 page pamphlet was originally written in 1944 and re-published in 2001 with minor edits.I am surprised this is the first review, so I will make it longer.It is a gem of practical advice on how to succeed in an engineering organization as an engineer and manager. It should be a must read for everyone in this field. It is amazing how relevant all the advice from 1944 is still today. People don't change! The book was probably written by a mechanical engineer, but was 100% relevant to me - a software engineer and will likely be equally relevant to other cubical dwellers with engineering degrees and their managers.

The language style of the book was preserved from 40s edition and makes the book even more entertaining to read, but I do take its advice seriously. The advice in the book is very simple and aimed at helping novices adapt to engineering environment faster. Good refresher for everyone though.

The advice is related to how to communicate with manager, co-workers and, in general, how to behave to succeed in an engineering organization without sacrificing your principals.It emphasizes that your communication skills are more important than any technical skills you have.Simple things like "strive to be concise" (I wish I was in this review), "be careful of accuracy of your statements", "don't invade domain of another department without consent or fire may erupt", "cultivate the habit of seeking people's opinions", "promises, schedules and estimates are necessary", "show interest in what your employees are doing", " do all you can to protect the personal interests of your subordinates and their families", and my favorite: "do all you can to see that your subordinates get all the salary to which they are entitled". :)There is actually more stuff for managers in this pamphlet, but, as it correctly notes, every aspiring engineer will, over time, have some managerial tasks.All in all, a great quick read to keep you on your game. ... Why all the amazing reviews?
This book is mediocre at best. At first you might think it's brilliant because it has practice problems (which is a good thing), but the formulas it uses do not match up with the formulas that are found in the FE Reference Manual (a formula book you get during the test). If they do match up, they are written differently using different, and simpler notation. This comes up a lot while doing practice problems because the book pulls out formulas from its a$$ and it seems so easy but since they're not in the formula book, you wouldn't necessarily be able to replicate it on your own. The book also uses formulas it discusses at the beginning of each chapters (and some of these are also not in the reference manual) so this all gets very frustrating.

Not Bad
This book isn't too bad of a review tool.The description states that it will take about an hour to review each chapter, but this does not include working the practice problems.If you choose to work those, as you should because the text does not provide enough information for a detailed review, it will take closer to 4 hours per chapter.Also, the solutions sometimes skip steps making it difficult to follow the logic of the solution.All in all, this is a good review resource, but plan far a head and do not wait until the month before the test to begin.

FE Review Manual
FE Exam review is split up into sections worth looking at.Passed the FE only reviewing topics which I needed.

Buy this, PASS the FE/EIT on your first attempt!!!
I was skeptical about buying a book to study for the EIT exam but at the same time did not want to go thru all my notes and figure out what's what!!So, I ordered this GREAT book, and after going over it for a few weeks, I took the EIT and passed it the first time!It is very detailed and has all the subjects that you need to know on the EIT, and it has sample exams also.If you put your time on this book for a few weeks, maybe 4 or 5, you should not have any problems during the exam.Good book, highly recommended!

A great supplement to this book for CE people will be Civil Discipline-Specific Review for the FE/EIT Exam, I'm gonna say it again, only if you're going to take the civil engineering exam on the second part of the test, you should get this.If you will only take the general FE/EIT exam, you don't really need the civil book.

Follow the program and you will pass with this book!

This book seems to assume the reader is already a trained landscape architects reviewing for the LARE exam.
This textbook manages to take rather simple theories and turn them into Quantum physics by the virtue of jargon, verbose explanations, dismal graphics, - and get this: They are No answers to the exercises in this book.
The authors are undoubtedly very knowledgeable regarding Site engineering, but either clueless or indifferent to techniques of effective instruction.

Where are the &%$ing answers??
I bought this book to help me better understand how to do grading, evaluate contours, etc. All well and good. I begin doing the problems at the end of a chapter, and there is no answer key anywhere in the book. Can't find any reference to answers anywhere.

I would have rated the book higher but for this little issue.

This book is not helpful
I am a first-year BLA student, and this text is required for an introductory course in site grading and drainage.This book is very difficult for me to read and understand.Descriptions of calculations are very poorly presented in paragraph narrative, which is mind-numbing to read and comprehend.If the calculations were presented in a step-by-step format, like a math text, they would be dramatically more clear and understandable.I agree with a previous reviewer, as well, that the layout is dysfunctional because the text and corresponding graphics are not on facing pages.This problem is particularly annoying, considering that landscape architecture is a design profession that emphasizes legibility in graphics and presentation material.I would welcome anyone's recommendations for a text that explains this subject in a more helpful way. ... The book was badly damaged
I sent a review of this purchase about a week ago, although there was a limit on length. My response was that the copy of the book sent to me by a non-amazon supplier, who called it acceptable, was not worth keeping. But should have been disposed of. The lower half of the book had severe water damage where all pages were stuck together. It took me hours to separate them individually but some ended up being torn. Mostly unreadable, all pages wrinkled and bottom half bulging. To return it would have cost me more than the book. But i would like to have it replaced, since I will throw this one away.

Worst Text Book Ever
This is probably the worst text book I've used in my classes so far.The say the same thing repeatedly, and the illustrations are absolutely useless.I have basically accounted on my previous project managment textbooks to get me through this class.I think I can read the summary of every chapter and get all I'm going to get out of this textbook.Terrible! I never sell my textbooks back but this one is going back for sure!

Good, but heavy on the math
Overall, I found Pozar's book to be a good handbook on pracical applications of microwave engineering.However, as one who has not been a design engineer in years, the long drawn out mathematical proofs of the theories behind the applications made for a sometimes tedious read.This would have been a great text for me right out of college, but in my current position I don't need to understand the theory to the depth that Pozar often goes into.The purists and hardcore design guys might say I've devolved into a mathematical whimp, but for my needs I like overviews.

I actually had the one written by Ludwig as my RF textbook, which as clearly written as it is, lacks more detail in couplers. So I bought this renowned one and it is worth its reputation.

Microwave Engineering
This textbook was specified for a graduate level oourse in microwave engineering, it is very useful and covers the material in good detail. I found some solutions to problems on the authors website which have helped in understanding the material.

A nice book
Although, I have not read this book all of the way through, it looks like a really great book.

The Best Reference for Microwave Engineering
As a working engineer with high power RF for nearly 20 years, I found David Pozar's book to be one of the best references to microwave engineering that is available.There are many professional books available which cover the same topics, but they lack a sufficient mathematical electricity & magnetism explanation in comparison.One of the things I found is that I had to refresh myself on the math, which is a good thing, in order to complete the problems at end of every chapter.I recently met a microwave communications engineer who had a class taught by David Pozar and he said it was difficult since Pozar is demanding, but enjoyed the class.Well, this attitude is reflected in this book by treating most topics very quantitatively.

I would highly recommend Microwave Engineering to all mobile communications, RF, radar systems and electronic warfare engineers. And of course to all graduate electrical engineering students.

With this book, I also recommend as a complement RF Design Guide: Systems, Circuits, and Equations

The only negative I can say is about cost, but there are several used sources available and for this type of reference the new cost can be justified if you work in this field.

Does not include 64-bit processors and OSs
I was disappointed that a book of this type does not cover 64-bit computing.

I've had a 64-bit CPU in my PC since 2003 so it should have been included here.

I don't think you can even buy a non-64-bit processor nowadays.Maybe a second edition could include this ?

I am sorry for having written this review so late. This book is a true gem; a must-have for any serious software engineer. Understanding how software works under the hood is key to writing code properly -- and this book provides an insight on that topic in an absolutely BRILLIANT MANNER.

Having a fair bit of reverse engineering experience myself, I have found this book to be extremely concise and detaild -- and I have learned a fair bit of new material while reading it.

There is no dull moment in this book. The author (who is clearly a gifted writer) explains reverse-engineering-related topics in a fascinating and unique manner, and, within this work, he actually cements the way in which reverse engineering should always be taught. Written by a true master, the book is very pedagogic; every chapter is accompanied by detailed examples -- which make the discussed topics crystal-clear.

I would have given this book more than five stars, had I been able to -- and I can recommend it to every software deveopler without a trace of hesitation; actually, it is now that I have bought an additional copy as a gift to a friend. Rest assured that this book will be a crucial part in your collection of tech books, just like it is in mine.

To sum it all up (and as it becomes clear from the above written): I think that this book is a magnificent work of art (no less), and I would even dare to say that I enjoyed it more than any tech book I ever owned. Exam Questions add little to Practical Cryptography
This book is exactly the same as Ferguson and Schneier's _Practical Cryptography_ with the addition of examination questions, so it can be used in a college level course on cryptography. OK. I liked that.

Disappointing that none of the new crypto system were added to update the text to 2010. As far as I can see it still looks like the 2003 PC book. This "new" book is seven (7) years out of date? Wiskey Tango. Hey, I still like the book, but FCOL . . . I'd like to see the NIST new block cipher modes, such as more on the NIST block cipher mode from Rogaway at UC Davis-OCB and how it can be used in authenticating VPN-like remote connections back to the home office. This book had nothing on Propagating-PCBC (maybe I missed seeing it - if so sorry), and where is format preserving encryption (AES-FFX mode)? Or, LUKS dm-crypt, loop-aes? No? Too specific for this book maybe. OK. But still, nothing new at all? Nothing about SHA3 except to say the competition has started? It's almost done now. Not even one thing on their own entry, Skein?

Disappointing. I think the time for book publishing is over. I can get more info. and more up to date info. from Googling then reading PDF-downloaded papers and (of all things) Wikipedia - how sad.

Nice intro for non-cryptographists
This book gives you a nice introduction to modern cryptography including message authentication, public key infrastructure and hashing algorithms. It does not delve too much in unimportant details, but gives an overview of the common pitfalls and the state of the art software available.

The book contains exercises at the end of each chapter which makes the book suitable for self teaching. Do not expect to be able to implement your own safe cryptographic algorithms simply by reading this book but learn some kind of professional paranoia and an idea of just how difficult it is to write safe code today.

I am not a professional programmer myself or a cryptographic engineer, but I did enjoy the book very much since it was able to keep me up to speed with the newest technology. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in an overview of cryptography, but beware that some mathematical background is required (not more than high school stuff).

Just an update of an earlier work
I bought this blind on the promise of some new work from Ferguson and Schneier. But got fooled by the different title: "Cryptography Engineering" is just an update of the first edition of "Practical Cryptography". This is good stuff by some excellent authors, but if you've already bought the first edition, there's not enough more to make it worth forking out another $40 or so.

The text we've needed
It turns out that cryptography is the least of the issues in cryptographic systems. Good codes are available in good implementations all over the place (one reason the authors warn against implementing your own, since good implementations are very hard). But, as the authors say in their introductory chapter, "Cryptography by itself is fairly useless." They liken strong codes in a weak system to a bank-vault door on a tent. This book provides a first lesson in pouring some concrete into the walls behind that door.

Phrased as a text for a one semester graduate or advanced undergrad class, this highly readable text covers a range of basics - the first and most pervasive being the professional paranoia needed to actively seek out ways to defeat your own systems. The authors cover things you might expect in a crypto course, including ciphers, message digests, key exchange, and a smattering of mathematical basics. There's less of the real crypto material than you might think, however. I mean, what good is the unbreakable code when the bad guy with a root kit can read your passwords from the paging file or /dev/kmem? Instead, this book stands out for things like wiping secrets from memory as fast as you can - if you can, if language design or the physics of computer memory even make it possible. Even things like random numbers and the system clock come under careful scrutiny and analysis of their own. The reader who goes through this book cover to cover comes away with a solid appreciation of the hardware, software, and social issues involved in creating truly secure systems.

But, as the authors take pains to state, this is only an introduction. As happened with Schneier's "Applied Cryptography", it could become "... notorious for the systems that [readers] then designed and implemented on their own" after reading it. Serious cryptographic systems require specialized skills, skills that only a handful of people worldwide have. Since the authors observe that "We don't actually know how to create secure code," it's arguable that no one is qualified. But, to get even as good as the experts are today, a student has to start somewhere. This introductory text gets that student off to that start.

Long awaited update of the Practical Cryptography
I just got the book, skimmed over it and compared it with the 1st edition (Practical Cryptography).

First of all, if you don't have the 1st edition, this is an excellent buy. It's a "middle ground" book and probably the one you should start with if you are interested in practical cryptography. Then, depending on your interests and needs, you could proceed to a technically and mathematically much deeper (but somewhat obsolete) Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms, and Source Code in C, Second Edition or to some other direction using the foundation laid down in this book and then getting other book(s) about "hard-core" mathematics of cryptography or about "softer" methods of social engineering and real-life security.

I will now assume you know what the book is all about and that you are considering upgrading it so here are some quick things I hope to help you deciding:

- first of all, obviously, the errata from the 1st edition is incorporated into the text (there is no errata for the 2nd edition yet but keep checking on the book's home page [ [..] ]) which also contains the links from the book so you don't have to type them yourself while investigating
- the algorithms, protocols and formulas look the same but they might have minor tweaks, most of the stuff I looked up is the same as in the 1st edition
- the 2nd edition has 60 pages less and that's because the line spacing is smaller (the text is more dense) and not because some material has been omitted (at least I could not find anything significant being removed)
- one (really small) speculative mathematical subchapter has been removed (4.5.6 in 1st edition: Equation Solving Attacks); I guess the attack/math did not turn out to work
- the new addition to the team of the authors is a university professor and, as a result of that, the book has more of a textbook feel: exercises at the end of each chapter are added and the preface now contains example syllabi subchapter with three course proposals (6, 10 and 12 week) based on the book; it is also mentioned in the preface that the book is now "more suited for a self-study"
- the chapter layout is exactly the same as in 1st edition but off by one since "Our Design Philosophy" from the 1st edition has been presented a bit later as a subchapter of another chapter
- there are more references at the end (130 vs 97)
- minor: the cover is more boring, it really looks and, with the denser text inside, feels like a textbook while the 1st edition looked more like an engineering/hacking book

My first experience with Shigley's Mechanical Engineering was in college when the book was required for one of my classes.This was back around the 1972 time frame.I kept that book and used it, along with several other colleagues, to the point where the book was falling to pieces.At this point I decided to brake down and buy the latest version which has much more information.If you do any kind of stress analysis work, Shigley's is a must have book.

This book is very ambiguous and has many wrong answers in the back of the book.For a student that struggles with this topic, it is very misleading and frustrating when the answers provided are wrong.

Informative, but not a stand-alone text
I purchased this book for my ENGM400:Mechanical Engineering Design class.I gained a lot from that class, but that was LARGELY due to a very experienced professor with excellent presentation abilities.This textbook is filled with useful information, but without a professional to explain how to use many of the concepts presented, it is nearly useless.Until you have been taught the purpose of various tables and charts, and guided through the methods of analyzing many of the problems contained inside, this book will only confuse you.

The book does provide many excellent examples, but unfortunately some of these are severely lacking in explanation, leaving you to puzzle over WHY the authors chose to solve problems the way they did; other problem types are completely missing a corresponding example and are just as confusing.

Obviously, if this textbook is a requirement for your class, reading this review won't persuade you not to buy it. To be honest, I would actually recommend buying it rather than borrowing or leasing, because once you have been instructed in its use it has a ton of helpful information and I have been using it for reference at my place of employment.However, don't expect to pick it up as something to read for knowledge without a course to accompany it. ... Good book. Was what I needed for my class.
Book laid out very logically. I bought it for my Intro to Sys Eng class at John's Hopkin's this semester. Not too much fluff in each chapter. Short chapters ~20-30 pages. I can't really rate the quality of the material in the book since this is the only Sys Eng book I've ever read. Seems to be good. My prof said that we would use this book for a lot of courses. Quick shipping, Amazon is where I go for textbooks I don't have to pay for myself.

Excellent introductory text
I am presently using this text in an introductory (graduate level) course in systems engineering.I have been a practicing systems engineer for over 15 years, and I still find this text useful as a reference.I highly recommend this book both as a beginning graduate level text and a practical reference for the working systems engineering professional.

Terrible Book
Worse book I have ever read. When engineers write books this is what you get, a ton of definitions and poorly structured uninteresting chapters. Learned more from reading online, then I ever got from this book. I don't even think it is worth the paper it is written on. Absolutely terrible, don't buy.

Excellent book on Systems Engineering covering Development, Post-Development (Production, Operation and Support), Systems Engineering Management, Software Systems Engineering and Decision Tools on the same book.

I believe it is coherent with its goal: "help students learn how to think like systems engineers".

Deeply satsifying and friendly overview with a long shelf life
Professor Neftci's Second Edition of Principles of Financial Engineering brilliantly seizes the high ground in clarity and authority. He promotes a "way of solving problems using financial securities and their derivatives" and absolutely succeeds in sharing the thinking process of a financial engineer.

The book's essence is to illustrate the financial engineer's modus operandi: the deconstruction of a complex instrument into its synthetic equivalent, a replicating portfolio of simpler building block instruments, that mimics the instrument's economics (cash flows and risk). By the end, you will see financial instruments as combinations of basic positions.

His favor to the reader is heavy use of cash flow diagrams. Initially, I thought these would be tedious; but I soon become convinced these are extremely useful frameworks.

For example, take a credit default swap (CDS). Neftci "solves" for the CDS cash flows sequence by combining the cash flows (literally combining cash flow diagrams) of three other instruments, so we can see exactly how a bond is synthetically replicated:

* Long risky bond = Short CDS (sell protection) + make default-free LIBOR-based money market deposit + receive-fixed in an interest rate swap, or

* Short CDS = Long a risky bond + borrow at money market rate + pay-fixed in an interest rate swap

So, the "replicated" short CDS position (selling protection) works as follows. Funds to purchase the risky bond are borrowed at LIBOR floating; coupons are received from the bond. Most of the risky bond coupon goes to pay the fixed-rate on the interest rate swap. The received LIBOR coupon on the swap exactly funds the interest rate on the borrowed funds. Which leaves the remainder of the risky bond coupon; i.e., the swap spread. And, under this simple model, the credit spread over the swap rate should equal the CDS premium.

My favorite parts of the book:

Chapter 2 is useful review of market conventions; e.g., different yields

Chapter 4 put swaps at the center of financial engineering: he shows how swaps are a "the equivalent of zero in finance" and how a swap can be deconstructed from virtually any cash instrument.

His approach perfectly lends itself to viewing options as volatility instruments (Chapter 8). Not new per se, but it finds an intuitive explanation under his method: a delta-neutral portfolio consists of a long (funded) call plus a short position in the underlying stock (of delta units), such that any volatility produces a profit. The long call is long volatility.

Chapter 10 reviews exotic options, but as you'd expect, exotics are brilliantly displayed with their synthetic equivalents; e.g., a binary call is replicated by a long call plus a short call with higher strike price.

Theory on risk neutral probabilities with applications

Entire chapter on volatility positions (i.e., portfolios that isolate on volatility as the risk factor)

Additional material (from the first edition) on credit markets, CDS, structured products, credit indices and correlation pricing

Finally, the other rare achievement of this book is that it adresses several levels of proficiency. There is something for everbody, from the beginner to the advanced engineer. Few finance books actually pull this off.

If you have one book at work, this one should be it
I've read of few books about financial products and their application, but this one is by far the best.The author's intent is to share his knowledge, rather than show it off. This title has served as a very helpful starting point quite a few times, especially when I have to get something done in a hurry.

I bought a number of copies over the years to give them to colleagues - especially those new to the financial industry. The explanations and derivations can be followed by mortals - the author does not leave out big chunks of the explanation using the old "as it can EASILY be shown". Instead, he tells the whole story to build a solid understanding of the subject matter.

Conveys Fundamentals Well
This book did a great job of explaining the basics in fairly simple terms. It even gave some simple math to figure out how components will work under specific situations. This is a great starting point for learning about chassis and suspension.

Excellent reference book, but a bit dated
The principles of good chassis design remain the same, and Adams does a good job of explaining them.For the most part, the coverage is complete, but there are a few areas where he could have put more detail and information in without overwhelming the reader.His whole section on software is highly dated, whether it's data acquisition or suspension analysis.(SusProg3D does an excellent job of basing the tutorials for their suspension design & analysis software on Adams examples from Chapter 7 and really helps flesh them out.We use it as our standard design package at school.)

There isn't much about off-road applications, either.I do like his explanations of anti-squat and many of the rear-end geometry features.Great for basic-level students!

The book may have its shortcomings, but it's still about the best introductory chassis design book I've found to use in my Chassis Engineering course, and we've been using it as our text for years.I've found some other (highly dated, too) books to fill in some of the holes.Asking students to buy two different books, when they're both $15-, is like a freebie given today's out of sight book prices!(I always send out an email before the semester starts telling them what the books are, and suggesting they come here instead of the campus bookstore!Wish I got a kickback on that action!!)

Too much engineering terminology...
This book has some good info, but it requires a lot more explaining. It tells you how, but not why? Like, why should i use this book? I should good ahead and enroll in some courses @ Georgia Tech. Every example given has a pro...then, a con to CONTRADICT the pro. I didn't feel like i could use any of the info.

Good guide for fundamental learning
This book provides an excellent guide to understanding the basic physical forces that affect race car performance; especially as it relates to tires, shocks, and weight distribution.I recommend it for anyone who is just starting out in their attempts to setup a race car.Members of the iRacing community will also find the book a valuable resource.

Not for engineers
Maybe it's a good book for the Nascar and other North American race car fans to know how those cars are tunned, but it is not really a Chasss Engineering reference book. ... Read more
