Product Description
Recent advances in the imaging technique electron microscopy (EM) have improved the method, making it more reliable and rewarding, particularly in its description of three-dimensional detail. This book will help biologists from many disciplines understand modern EM and the value it might bring to their own work. The book's five sections deal with all major issues in EM of cells: specimen preparation, imaging in 3-D, imaging and understanding frozen-hydrated samples, labeling macromolecules, and analyzing EM data. Each chapter was written by scientists who are among the best in their field, and some chapters provide multiple points of view on the issues they discuss. Each section of the book is preceded by an introduction, which should help newcomers understand the subject. The book shows why many biologists believe that modern EM will forge the link between light microscopy of live cells and atomic resolution studies of isolated macromolecules, helping us toward the goal of an atomic resolution understanding of living systems.

* Updates the numerous technological innovations that have improved the capabilities of electron microscopy
* Provides timely coverage of the subject given the significant rise in the number of biologists using light microscopy to answer their questions and the natural limitations of this kind of imaging
* Chapters include a balance of "how to", "so what" and "where next", providing the reader with both practical information, which is necessary to use these methods, and a sense of where the field is going ... Read more

Product Description

The electron microscope has been used in hair research for half a century, but the knowledge gained through this study has become rather fragmented over the years. While the molecular biological study of hair has become an active field, even here, as in more traditional research, an understanding of the morphological aspects is essential because the hair follicle structure is highly complex. The author explicates the structure, development, and differentiation of the hair follicle, using his own original photographs and explanations of current research, including growth factors, differentiation-inducers, cell signaling pathways, and transcription factors. With neonatal rats as subjects, he focuses on the morphological analysis of all basic hair cells - in the shaft, matrix, and papilla - from birth to death. The introductory chapter will benefit novices, with the following sections consisting mainly of explanations of the electron microscopic photographs of hair cells.

Product Description
This book is a comprehensive review of the theories, techniques and applications of reflection electron microscopy (REM), reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and reflection electron energy-loss spectroscopy (REELS). The book is divided into three parts: diffraction, imaging and spectroscopy. The text is written to combine basic techniques with special applications, theories with experiments, and the basic physics with materials science, so that a full picture of RHEED and REM emerges. An entirely self-contained study, the book contains much invaluable reference material, including FORTRAN source codes for calculating crystal structures data and electron energy-loss spectra in different scattering geometries. This and many other features makes the book an important and timely addition to the materials science literature for researchers and graduate students in physics and materials science. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From: Analysis, 1997
The book describes the analytical techniques based on electrondiffraction, reflection and imaging in the TEM (and STEM) for the analysisof materials surfaces. As with most texts dealing with analyticaltechniques these days it is awash with acronyms and the ones representingthe candidate methodologies are frequently encountered. These are RHEED(reflection high energy electron diffraction), REM (reflection electronmicroscopy), SREM (scanning REM) and REELS (reflection electron energy lossspectroscopy). Many others are included, but the author is considerateenough to define them all in the early pages of his book. The dust-covernotes state that this is 'an entirely self-contained study' in which the'theories, techniques and applications of REM, RHEED and REELS arecomprehensively reviewed'. Inspection of the text reveals that this is,indeed, the case, with three parts (logically Part A, Part B and Part C) ofapproximately equal length covering the three areas of reflection electronstudies. This is preceded by a comprehensive review of the kinematicaltheory of electron diffraction. This chapter is a very helpful (andnecessary) prelude to the rest of the book. It deals with kinematicalscattering in the usual numerical manner but the associated text makes thischapter extremely readable. The main body of the text is written in anequally attractive style with the theory of the various topics beingintroduced alongside the experimental procedures involved. There are manyapplications of reflection electron microscopy and spectroscopy scatteredthroughout the book; although inmost cases they serve as illustrations ofparticular facets of the experimental procedures rather than points whichemphasize the relative strengths of the candidate techniques. This is,however, a minor criticism, and the inclusion of examples of realmicrographs, diffraction patterns and spectra throughout the text mayprovide some readers with much needed relief from the undoubted rigour ofthe theoretical treatments provided.

For those with a TEM background itrepresents, perhaps, the definitive text for reflection methods.

Thereare two particularly attractive aspects of this book to be found in theclosing pages. The first is an extensive set (ten) of appendices whichcontain much useful data along with five FORTRAM programs for interpretingspectra and modeling electron beam/specimen interaction. These havepresumably been widely tested in the author's laboratory and theirinclusion here is to be welcomed. The other feature, warmly welcomed bythis reviewer, is the inclusion of a separate index of the materials usedto illustrate the various facets of the reflection techniques. Alsoincluded as an Appendix is a chronological bibliography of REM, SREM andREELS covering the years 1975-1995. RHEED is presumably excluded as it isthe most senior, and widely used, of the methods considered. This book isnot one for those with a peripheral interest in RHEED, REM, SREM and REELS.Referring once again to the cover notes it is offered as an 'ideal guidefor scientists and graduate students working on quantitative surfacestructure characterization using reflection electron techniques' and thereis no doubt that this target audience will appreciate the publication ofsuch a concise, authoritative and well written text in their chosen area ofendeavor. For those with a TEM background it represents, perhaps, thedefinitive text for reflection methods and provides all the theoreticalinformation necessary for a thorough appreciation of these techniques. Atsuch a reasonable price for a very specialist text one would hope that itwill soon find a place on the bookshelf of every electron microscopy unitwith a practical need (or even aspirations) to carry out surface structuredetermination in the TEM or STEM. For those with a need for such a textthis book fulfills all the claims made on its behalf. Dr. Wang is to becongratulated on writing a very accessible text. The book is thoroughlyrecommended.

Product Description
While most textbooks about scanning electron microscopy (SEM) cover the high-voltage range from 5-50 keV, this volume considers the special problems in low-voltage SEM and summarizes the differences between LVSEM and conventional SEM. Chapters cover the influence of lens aberrations and design on electron-probe formation; the effect of elastic and inelastic scattering processes on electron diffusion and electron range; charging and radiation damage effects; the dependence of SE yield and the backscattering coefficient on electron energy, surface tilt, and material as well as the angular and energy distributions; and types of image contrast and the differences between LVSEM and conventional SEM modes due to the influence of electron-specimen interactions.
