Product Description
A "student-friendly" introduction to the basics of electric circuit analysis, this sophomore-level text covers traditional material, as well as such modern topics as op-amps and the use of digital computers for circuit analysis. The presentation is very lucid and thorough with clearer and more complete explanations of Kirchoff's laws, and nodal analysis than in comparable texts.Bobrow also places greater emphasis on signals and waveforms. This text features evaluation of initial conditions, phasor diagrams, and coverage of SPICE. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid but Uninspiring
This textbook is very much an introductory textbook on linear circuit analysis, i.e., analysis of electrical circuits that can be drawn on a plane without unconnected wires crossing. It presents all the necessarybasics of the subject with a straightforward, practical approach couch insomewhat casual language.

A solid foundation in the topic is thereforeprovided, with numerous examples to reinforce the concepts and providepractice. However, apart from a more than usually well-constructedapproach, there this book has no outstanding feature that shows it to befar superior to others of its ilk.

Physically, the book is notinordinately think, nor is it poorly produced. In fact, although it has therather old-fashioned two-colour layout, the print is clear, and the book,on the whole, is well made.

On the whole, then, whilst not a particularlyinspiring textbook, it nevertheless provides a good basis for the subject, and has a lot going for it. As an introductory text, it is not particularlyinteresting, but readily fulfils its aims in terms of teaching the subjectmatter.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better texts for circuit analysis
I have used 4 different circuit analysis texts in the last five years. This text gives a clear concise explanation of the material. The best I have experienced to date.Circuit textbooks are usually riddled witherrors, and difficult for the beginning student to understand the concepts. While this book does have its inconsistencies, It is the best I have seento date. ... Read more

Product Description
An informal and highly accessible writing style, a simple treatment of mathematics, and clear guide to applications, have made this book a classic text in electrical and electronic engineering. Students will find it both readable and comprehensive. The fundamental ideas relevant to the understanding of the electrical properties of materials are emphasized; in addition, topics are selected in order to explain the operation of devices having applications (or possible future applications) in engineering.

The mathematics, kept deliberately to a minimum, is well within the grasp of a second-year student. This is achieved by choosing the simplest model that can display the essential properties of a phenomenom, and then examining the difference between the ideal and the actual behaviour.

The whole text is designed as an undergraduate course. However most individual sections are self contained and can be used as background reading in graduate courses, and for interested persons who want to explore advances in microelectronics, lasers, nanotechnology and several other topics that impinge on modern life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A fair introduction
I read this book for the first time in the university book store when shopping for a class. I ended up not taking the class, but the style was so accessible that I got a copy of the text anyway.

It isn't a rigorous text as noted by another reviewer, however that reviewer I believe missed the point of the text completely. Somewhere I recall the audience was suggested to be 2nd year college student. Electrical Engineers rarely have had quantum mechanics by that point, if they take it at all. A course our of Kittel, Ashcroft and Mermin or similar would be needed first to truly be rigorous. The class that covers many of the topics in this book is a 400 level class at Cornell, one that assumes both solid state, and quantum as previous courses. Clearly no book that starts with what an electron is will get to how a superconductor in so few pages, in a rigorous manner.

No the point of this text is to introduce some rules and wave ones hands a bit to see why they should be true. While a greater number of rules and postulates may be less satisfying to some, it can be ever bit as useful if you can remember them all.

Solymar and Walsh do this. Not flawlessly, but in a text that is readable. Readability is important. This book is readable in the sense that Feynman's books are. The book is good for someone in another field or as a basic intro, as long as you understand you are getting a sketch. Sketches are useful, this book is also. Recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not purchase
Along the way, Dr. Solymar proves time and time again that he has not mastered many of the chemistry and physics topics that he attempts to explain. The uncertainty relation is proved via an arbitrarily chosen width for a wave packet without mention of the correct way to derive this relationship (found in any number of quantum mechanics books), and the final uncertainty relationship is stated incorrectly. Bragg's relationship is stated wrong. I guess he does not care to differentiate between greater than or equal to and greater than; nor between h and hbar (nor between the inclusion or exclusion of a factor of 2). However, for an introductory text, I would see it appropriate to get the equations and proof-approaches as correct as possible. If ugly algebra is what he is trying to avoid in this introductory text, he should at least provide the correct setups for each derivation, provide the relevant results, and guide the reader to alternative texts for a full-on mathematical work-up. Instead, what Dr. Solymar resorts to are cute, but useless stories, and arbitrary or unconventional approaches to 'prove' equations (usually not proofs at all, but a sequence of equalities showing that one result is consistent with another).

You wouldn't use arithmetic rules and algebraic laws learned in secondary school to prove the more basic set theory (which can be derived from a basic set of axioms); nor would you use Pauli's exclusions principle to prove the form of a multi-particle wave equation for identical/indistinguishable particles. Yet Dr. Solymar does exactly this: 'prove' things in the wrong direction, or start at a certain arbitrary result (without making explicit the assumptions), using this random starting point to 'prove' a very critical result.

Clear logic flow in this book is very much lacking. The book is however, rich in useless anthropomorphic analogies such as:

"Perhaps melodrama would be the right category [to characterize the Quantum Confined Stark Effect] considering the touching affection between electrons and holes. If we consider, however, how they stave off brutal intervention by the electric field with their backs against the potential wall, and how quickly all these things happen, then melodrama might give way to a thriller."

Bad does not begin to explain this book. Overall, it is not impossible nor difficult to learn from this book. However, your understanding of how to interface your mathematical toolset to physical problems will have serious holes and flaws if you follow this book too closely. If you want a firm grounding in electronic materials, take a look at Simon M. Sze's books. You might also want to consider Charles Kittel's introductory text in solid state physics (much more mathematically involved than Solymar however). Finally, I could also recommend Banerjee (Solid State Devices), which is also sometimes verbose. However, in the case of Banerjee, the verbosity is always in an effort to describe the nuances of the subject rather than as in the case of Solymar, the verbosity is usually an attempt to make a fairytale masterpiece out of a technical subject.

If you still have doubts about the quality of this book, please re-read the unedited quote I have taken out of the book above. If you want personified charge carriers, and violent electric fields, this book is perfect for you. This book is filled with enchanted and animated particles and forces and perilous land analogies you might expect in a fantasy book. I think for most, these ludicrous attempts at humor get old really fast and impede the reader's ability to get to the core of the concept.

4-0 out of 5 stars Witty and Informative
This work demonstrates that scientists are people too!Solymar and Walsh offer a survey of a difficult subject in a manner that is easy to follow, and sometimes funny. The quantum mechanics of electronics are explained insufficient depth to be useful, but not overdone enough to be boring.Iespecially loved the section on superconductivity! The book offer may notbe the most in-depth on individual subjects, but it presents each subjectin a clear, understandable way.Wonderful for the student. ... Designed for advanced undergraduate or first-year graduate courses in semiconductor or microelectronic fabrication, the third edition of Fabrication Engineering at the Micro and Nanoscale provides a thorough and accessible introduction to all fields of micro and nano fabrication. Completely revised and updated, the text covers the entire basic unit processes used to fabricate integrated circuits and other devices. It includes more worked examples, illustrations, and expands coverage of the frontiers of fabrication processes.

The physics and chemistry of each process are introduced along with descriptions of the equipment used to carry out the processes. The text uses a popular commercial process simulation suite--the Silvaco Athena® set of codes--to provide meaningful examples of many of the basic processes including diffusion, oxidation, lithography, and deposition.

The book goes on to discuss the integration of these basic unit processes into various technologies, concentrating on CMOS transistors. The text breaks down the material into treatments on the concepts of process modules, thermal budget, advanced architectures, and the use of channel strain for improved performance. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This should only be used as a reference book rather than for pedagogical purposes.
If you don't want to read too much, let me sum it up for you:Don't use this book to teach the concepts, only use it as a practical guide and reference in the field. The negative slant of this review is a result that the book is presented and sold as a teaching text-book in its format style, and that my professor used it as the course text-book.If I were reviewing it from a different perspective, it could be positive as the book provides a good deal of information.

This book is basically a culmination of industry and scientific research papers. With 20 chapters, and each chapter containing from 40 to over 100 reference sources, you could honestly say the author has done his homework; but the problem with this information is that it doesn't help me to do my homework. The chapters are walls of text sprinkled with un-explained assertions and confusing jargon that leave the reader to spend more time in other text books unrelated to the specific field or to scour the internet and the local library in hopes of finding any of the sources he cites.

The author pours out practical information without giving proper context in almost every paragraph it seems;leaving the impression that he assumes the reader is at a relatively high level of knowledge in this field already. At the same time he gives randomly disproportionate explanations that don't really have a place in the information he is trying to pass, only to confuse the concepts. He seems to only expand on the concepts he is comfortable with, and leaves his sources to poll information as valueless(in the teaching sense) filler.

The homework problems at the end of the chapter are worded rather ambiguously and are frustrating to even know what the author is asking. They also draw on information that is not inside of the book without disclaimer, which is a real no-no in my opinion when your goal is to teach the ideas.Overall a good majority of the problem solving is a frustrating effort of interpreting the author's language and implications rather than interpreting the concepts and ideas you're trying to learn.

I have a mixed opinion on the tables and figures. At times they are informative and help to visualize the concepts he is trying to explain, but the gray-scale coloring and nature of the figures makes it very ambiguous and at times ineffective. Some of the technical equipment schematics are interesting and show the organization of what he's trying to explain, but again, the ideas are sometimes too complex and drawn in an artistic style that really makes the visualization ambiguous and confusing.Basically there's too much struggle between trying to look pretty and simple, and portraying the information clearly and exactly.

The book is a conflict of trying to be a definitive source of industry information while also trying to relay different levels of understanding in physics.I would rather buy two books, one explaining the physics and mathematics of the core engineering concepts, and another explaining the applications, wisdom, standards, and practical facts of the industry. The book does not do the physics justice: it is relatively half-assed for a "text book".

Who I would recommend this book for:
Researchers, professors, and graduate students with at least a year of experience in the field.I also would recommend this to a newly graduated student looking to get some practical "facts" memorized for a job interview if he seeks a career in the electronics fabrication industry. Also, I'm sure many engineers and scientists working at corporations and organizations in this industry could benefit from having it on their cubicle shelf.

Who I do not recommend this for:
Firstly, I should never recommend a student to not read a book with valuable information; however, I think any course in this field should not rely on this text-book as a teaching tool.So I must say instructors and professors who are teaching: NEVER rely on this book as your course text book. You need a more teaching-oriented text that goes in more depth of the principles rather than random details interjected from 50 years of reference sources where the student is burdened with knowing what parts are important. This book is fine as a secondary source for material to discuss in lectures or supplement the curriculum.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gets the job done
I actually took the class with the author of the book as the instructur, so it that was very helpful, otherwise there are places in the book that can be confusing. The information in the book is very accurate however, and there is a lot of good info, ... Read more

Product Description
The theory of probability is a powerful tool that helps electrical and computer engineers to explain, model, analyze, and design the technology they develop. The text begins at the advanced undergraduate level, assuming only a modest knowledge of probability, and progresses through more complex topics mastered at graduate level. The first five chapters cover the basics of probability and both discrete and continuous random variables. The later chapters have a more specialized coverage, including random vectors, Gaussian random vectors, random processes, Markov Chains, and convergence. Describing tools and results that are used extensively in the field, this is more than a textbook; it is also a reference for researchers working in communications, signal processing, and computer network traffic analysis. With over 300 worked examples, some 800 homework problems, and sections for exam preparation, this is an essential companion for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. 5-0 out of 5 stars good book
I used this book for a EE Probability course, and the professor is a freak Korean guy....

4-0 out of 5 stars an excellent book to begin probability
This is an excellent book on probability. What I liked about it is the fact that it is sprinkled with numeours examples. The language the author has used is also easy to understand but at the same time, formal. It really strikes the balance.

However, I think there should be more explanation of combinatorics in ch2. But if a person has had some prior knowledge of probability, they should refer to some other book for that portion.

5-0 out of 5 stars well suited for a university course
Gubner provides an excellent text for undergrads or grads wanting a solid background in applying the ideas of probability and random processes. The emphasis is on applications in electrical engineering. The book presupposes a solid background in calculus and some circuit theory. Ideally, the student might be a third year undergrad or higher.

The main ideas in probability are developed. Getting to the Central Limit Theorem and the Gaussian (bell) curve. The probability distributions most useful to you might be the continuous ones.

Then, the text develops the ideas of random processes. When these can be assumed to be stationary, then it makes tractable vast areas of applications, as in the communications theory of the signal to noise ratio of a channel.

The book shines as a text for a university course because of the wealth of examples and problem sets. The difficult of the latter varies considerably, which is also another advantage to a lecturer facing students with a range of abilities. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Promising but disappointing
In my opinion, a good handbook should begin each subject treated with a clear elementary introduction suitable for nonspecialists, and continue to include a collection of tables, diagrams, and formulas to aid the specialist.

The introductions are sometimes incomplete and misleading. The specialist will usually not find the reference material normally expected in handbooks.

It is an attractively printed volume and generally quite readable. The global plan is generally quite good, and one can hope that this work will be allowed to mature in future revisions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Less practice
You can learn a lot of mathematics in this book but nothing about MATLAB. There is no good practice in this book.
A hint for the author. Try to make a CD-ROM with all examples on it. So everyone can get familiar with MATLAB and the surface. Best would be to double or triple the number of examples. (good examples in MATLAB Code)
Rethink it and I will be the first who buys the improved edition of this book otherwise you only have to change the title in :Advanced Engineering Mathematics pictures by MATLAB.
Thanks for reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well organized approach
The book organizes several complex topics in a very intuitive and logical manner, which makes it a good reference book for engineering students. A detailed section on statistics would have been helpful. ... Read more

used as a textbook, but even if not would make an excellent companion to any elec mech class.

5-0 out of 5 stars MEEB Bow Down
If you want to know more than most Architects and Engineers about how to design the guts of buildings this is the book to use. It's a fat guy though! Sometimes the text seems to weigh you down. Most architectural students consider it a sloug! But, once they graduate, they use it throughout their careers as design professionals. If you want to know how to develop a regional climatic response strategy for your building or development, calculate passive ventillation rates or heat gains and losses on unique configurations of wood, siding and insulation; size gutters or a rain water catchment system or plan for an elevator, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars review of Mechanical and Electrical Equipment for Buildings, 9th Edition by Ben Stein
This is the best reference for Architects and students studying mech. & elec. equipment

4-0 out of 5 stars Best One-Volume Resource For Engineers
If you are an engineer engaged in the design of mechanical and electrical systems for commercial and institutional buildings, you may find this your most valuable reference for an overview of theory and best practices for the entire gamut of building systems.

I did find a bit too much enthusiasm for environmentally friendly and energy-conserving new ideas. Many of these technologies are worth following but have economic results that will not serve your clients well.

I am a professional engineer (leading my own firm) with 40 years of experience and have a huge library including the eighth and ninth editions of this book; it's one of my favorites.

It's must reading for a new engineer because you will be able to understand the basics of areas that are new to you with an hour or two of study.

5-0 out of 5 stars An author's view:
My part of this book (mechanical and plumbing) is designed to first show how to minimize the need for mechanical equipment by designing with the climate and site firmly in mind. First configure a building to optimize daylighting, solar heating, and various climate-appropriate passive cooling methods. Also, to store rainwater when appropriate. Then, proceed to choose and size the back-up equipment. In this way, designers conserve non-renewable energy, utilize natural (on-site) energy sources, and also help building occupants stay in touch with the outdoors. I believe that we'll tend to care more about a clean outdoor environment if we are kept aware of its condition.
For a summary of this approach, read Chapter One. I hope you enjoy this book, even when it is your textbook! That was my object. Suggestions? I'm at jreyn@darkwing.uoregon.edu ... Read more

Product Description
A clear explanation of the technology for producing and delivering electricity

Electric Power Systems explains and illustrates how the electric grid works in a clear, straightforward style that makes highly technical material accessible. It begins with a thorough discussion of the underlying physical concepts of electricity, circuits, and complex power that serves as a foundation for more advanced material. Readers are then introduced to the main components of electric power systems, including generators, motors and other appliances, and transmission and distribution equipment such as power lines, transformers, and circuit breakers. The author explains how a whole power system is managed and coordinated, analyzed mathematically, and kept stable and reliable.

Recognizing the economic and environmental implications of electric energy production and public concern over disruptions of service, this book exposes the challenges of producing and delivering electricity to help inform public policy decisions. Its discussions of complex concepts such as reactive power balance, load flow, and stability analysis, for example, offer deep insight into the complexity of electric grid operation and demonstrate how and why physics constrains economics and politics.

Although this survival guide includes mathematical equations and formulas, it discusses their meaning in plain English and does not assume any prior familiarity with particular notations or technical jargon. Additional features include:
* A glossary of symbols, units, abbreviations, and acronyms
* Illustrations that help readers visualize processes and better understand complex concepts
* Detailed analysis of a case study, including a Web reference to the case, enabling readers to test the consequences of manipulating various parameters

With its clear discussion of how electric grids work, Electric Power Systems is appropriate for a broad readership of professionals, undergraduate and graduate students, government agency managers, environmental advocates, and consumers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best explanation I have seen of this topic
As someone with a Physics degree trying to make it as an Electrical Engineer in a utility I have been handed a great many books. Most of these were useless. A typical one will include pages and pages of equations without ever stopping to explain what everything actually means. This book appears to be the exception. It really does start with basics and explain why every term is important.

I will give an example. Many books spend pages talking about the mathematics of reactive power. However they will neglect to say why it is important. The math is easy so most students probably just memorize an equation and decide they understand it. Or more likely look at the equation, remember they can look it up when they need it, and move on. This book does no such thing, the following quote from this book is the best explanation of what reactive power is and why it is important that I have seen yet:

"3.3.3 The Significance of Reactive Power
A low power factor is undesirable for utilities in terms of operating efficiency and
economics. Most customers, especially small customers, are only charged for the
real power they consume.15 At the same time, the presence of reactive power oscillating
through the lines and equipment is associated with additional current. While reactive
power as such is not consumed, it nonetheless causes the utility to incur costs,
both in the form of additional losses and in the form of greater capacity requirements.
Owing to its property of occupying lines and equipment while doing no useful work,
reactive power has been referred to jokingly as "the cholesterol of power lines.""

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding layman's interview of the electric power grid
I am an applied computer science researcher who has worked closely on research with leading power engineering researchers for the last decade now. Even though I have an undergraduate degree in math (plus one in computer science) and an undergraduate minor in electrical engineering, I have found that trying to get insight into the power grid's dynamics is hard.Textbooks for EE students (typically a junior or senior class) assume a lot of EE background I do not have. And I have looked at every other supposed layman's overview of the grid I could find in recent years, and not one is anywhere close to this (most are superficial).

This book gives outstanding intuition into how our electric power grid really operates.Such knowledge is becoming even more essential as many experienced utility operators retire, as the operational characteristics a utility's footprint or an entire grid become less familiar with new kinds of renewable energy (with different characteristics) are being added, and as the grid becomes inherently less stable over time as the growth of generation and demand continues to outstrip that of transmission lines (more miles X megawatts each year, a big stability problem).

I certainly have all my computer science students, both graduate and undergraduate, who are working on our research read it carefully, and I recommend it to colleagues all the time. Most anyone who passed a few college math courses and any physics class (not even an engineering one necessarily) should be able to understand most anything in the book.Even people who have not quite had the above should be able to get a lot out of the book.I highly recommend it to layman in all fields, for training system operators, cyber-security experts and other computer scientists I routinely work with, and even to pointy-headed Dilbert managers --- at least they can become buzzword-compliant on the right things --- though I would lever let Dilbert's CEO read it.

Indeed, I work closely with a power researcher who is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, and he is very impressed with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best conceptual text books
As an electrical engineer I was really impressed that how clear and fluent the most difficult concepts were mentioned with a language that all formidable formulas in power system become easily understandable. I recommend this book to all electric power engineers and students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Electric power mysteries explained
This book gives clear and concise explanations of electric power fundamentals in evocative language. While I might have occasional quibbles with terminology or heuristic approach (as did one of the earlier reviewers), the book succeeds at explaining electric power concepts in ways that are far more effective than other textbooks I've used. Many very technical books on this topic are unnecessarily complex, and this book is a bridge to that more technical literature, particularly for readers who are new to the field.

2-0 out of 5 stars Clearly explained in laymans' misconceptions!
Yes, this book is indeed easy to read. However, its use of false concepts makes it an untrustworthy source. The author claims to have a degree of some sort in physics and a Phd in something. Why then does she think that an emf is a force?Any freshman physics student should know it isn't.And that bit about wriggling electrons pushing each other down a conductor-oh, brother! That is the kind of garbage I would expect in a book from Delmar Publishing, not from Wiley or IEEE press! In the preface, she mentioned receiving a manual from workers in a control room.I suspect she studied that book and forgot her physics.I have a Masters in physics, I belong to the IEEE, and I work for a major electric utility.I've seen the kind of books they use-chock full of out of date concepts and fairy tales.Come on IEEE, how did you let this book slip out? ... Product Description
This introductory book for undergraduate students poses a question: What is bioengineering all about? After offering a reference frame and defining the objectives (chapter 1), "physiology" (chapter 2) is presented as a source material followed by "signals" (chapter 3) and "signal pick up" (chapter 4). Chapter 5 deals with the biological amplifier. Reading the signal and the need for mathematical models are the subject matter, respectively, of chapters 6 and 7; they only provide guidance. The last chapter tries to look ahead. Sometimes, the subject is treated in relative depth; at times, the visit is more superficial. Formation rather than information is favored. Historical shots supply background material and spicy insights. Style is light, sprinkled with a little humor. There are exercises which allow students to learn independently. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete and comprehensive manual on power distribution
Dr. Gonen's book on electric power distribution is an excellent resource guide for all levels of distribution engineers. This book contains a wealth of information covering all aspects of distribution engineering from basic system planning and concepts through distribution system protection and reliability.Considering the wealth of information "Electric Power Distribution System Engineering" covers, this book is thoughtfully laid out with excellent diagrams and very useful examples and charts.Distribution planning and design considerations are especially well noted with emphasis placed on the analysis of subtransmission lines and distribution substations through the analytical design of primary and secondary systems. When considering these systems, Dr. Gonen has went beyond the usual analytical and qualitative analysis of the subject area and has injected a great deal of emphasis on the economical explication and overall impact of the distribution design considerations discussed which should be especially important to distribution engineers in coming days of utility deregulation and cost cutting. This book also goes into great detail on capacitor banks and voltage regulation, other very important aspects to distribution engineers as utilities continue to handle power quality issues and attempt to reliably "squeeze" the most out of their current system capacity. In the final chapters, distribution protection and reliability are firmly covered with topics analyzing fuse and recloser coordination and design to fault analysis and distribution system reliability issues.I personally had a chance to be tutored under Dr. Gonen and found out first hand the knowledge, wisdom and experience Dr. Gonen has within the field of distribution engineering. He brings to the table years of experience and his background and knowledge in this field of study are thoughtfully compiled in this excellent book on distribution engineering. ...
