very mediocre
not an engineering book at all. there are some half decent rules of thumb that any competent designer would know intuitively anyway, but you need to get by the author's annoying lame attempts at humor and his bragging to absorb them. some explanations are darn misleading and wrong, especially for anyone not having a background in physics or engineering. figures could be better to help people not familiar with the topic. for example, the base, emitter, and collector should at least be labeled when introducing transistors. on a positive note, the price of the book is reasonable at less than $20.00.

Good book!
The first chapter is worth the price. It emphasizes the KISS principle in EE. When actually building something, always, ALWAYS, **ALWAYS**, check the basics first. Ohm's law is king. When getting into, or back into, building circuits, stick your multi-meter or silly scope in and see what's going on. It is sooo cool to build something and actually have it work and this book is a great help in doing just that.

I bought the book by chance, thinking I would get some elementary information about Power systems which I am not extremely familiar with.

After reading up to chapter 2, I thought I am extremely lucky having read this book, and it ought to be recommended to First year Electronics Engineering students, Lecturers and TA.

I enjoyed the author's unprecedented (in a technical book) down to earth in his writing style (which what make this book stand out) and the information presentation (voltage divider amazing explanation, Real life examples (situation) which an engineer is faced with...),

indeed the book is not perfect later chapter's needs some improvements, the book is NOT intended to be comprehensive reference book i.e. art of electronics...

However the book makes sure understand the basic concepts and Fill the Gabs (interconnect the ideas) no other book on electronics have ever tried,

If new edition would be published in future I'll buy it.

However I think you will never regret reading it.

A good resource for all electrical engineers that are interested in the fundamentals of the field and beyond.
I bought the book because I was looking to enhance my practical knowledge in the electrical engineering field of study. Not only do I feel that the book helped me to accomplish that, but I gained much more. First, from the first chapter to the last chapter, there were thumb rules, principals, illustrations and examples to help make electrical engineering less formidable to study ( something that is not common place in engineering school). Second, the book gives advice that can help you to make yourself more marketable to potential employers. Third, the book gives practical advice for success on the job for managers as well as employees. Finally, Mr. Ashby was willing to answer any questions concerning the book or pertaining to the field of electrical engineering in general. I thought the book was worth every penny.

Got the job done
This book had excellent information. Some concepts could use elaboration, but it was one of the better textbooks I've delved into.

When University profs try to write engineering books...
I've worked as an engineer in the real world for over 4 years and have a small library of science and engineering texts, including about half a dozen EE texts, all of which are superb. I've never seen anyone devote two full chapters to resistor networks, nearly 150 pages!! In the real world engineers DESIGN circuits, not spend all day reverse engineering resistive networks, pretending they don't know the difference between a battery and a resistor! We drew circuit loops in jr high, I think we can move on to linear designs in college. Like I said, engineers write good engineering texts, not university professors.

Defective copy
The book received was the correct book, however it was a misprinted copy. The book I received had pages 31 through 78 printed twice and was missing all pages before 31. I ordered the book before my class started so did not notice the pages were missing in time to return the book.

Not Helpful
So I was having a lot of problems with my Electrical Circuits class, and desperately needed help... I saw this book, said it contained all the basics, easy to understand, blah blah blah...

Unfortunately it was just like my textbook... so it didn't have a positive nor negative effect on me... it acts like sparknotes... simply putall of the equations in a smaller book...

So if you're trying to have something condensed, get it... if you're trying to understand, seek help at the school because there are no books currently available to guide you step by step

Poor execution of a good idea
The idea was to have the essentials of AC/DC circuit analysis, linear circuits, electronic circuits, digital logic circuit design, electromechanical machines, and control theory in one handy outline. The problem is, any one of these subjects is way too complex and deep as it is presented in most universities for the book to be helpful for undergraduate electrical engineering students. Also, on the whole, this material is far from basic. The material on electromechanical machines and control theory is usually taught in junior or senior undergraduate courses.Thus, this book would be most helpful to a professional or someone returning to graduate school for a master's degree in electrical engineering who needs some review on material that they have previously mastered but possibly forgotten. Unfortunately, as the other reviewer pointed out, this book is chock full of errors, thus rendering the book pretty much useless in the problem solving department. If a revised second edition of this book ever comes out with corrections to all of the current errors, I would recommend it to the target audience I have already mentioned, but definitely not to undergraduate engineers who are seeing this material for the first time.

Needs proofread, BADLY!
I'm presently using this as a textbook in an into-level EE class. The book is a great concept - give a book of problems and enough information on the theory to solve them, including some step-by-step examples. And, sometimes, it works well. What kills it are the repeated glaring errors in the answers it gives for the questions - so far, I'd venture to say that, after the first couple chapters, more then 10% of the answers are wrong, be it from swapping a sign someplace or an outright mistake in understanding on the part of the person who solved the problem. This makes the book uterly and totally unacceptable - it has as much potential to damage someone's knowledge of electronics as to teach the person. ... Read more

Better than expected
The electrical engineering book that was purchased was in very good condition.It was much better than expected and was delivered quickly using standard shipping.

Foundations of Electrical Engineering, 2nd edition, J.R. Cogdell
This book is perfect for the use in a course called "Electrical Engineering for Non-Majors". The material is "math based" and as such it is an engineering text and not a technician's text. It also serves as a great desk reference for an electrical engineer who would like to see the major fundamentals covered in just one book. All topics are clearly written and after the first 5 chapters an instructor can easily choose topics pending on the need of the students. I have used this text for a junior level Civil Engineering curriculum where it gave the students a good base to tackle electrical questions on a PE exam. Myself I carry it with me to serve as a quick review source for the main electrical engineering topics.Last but not last: About 50% of the problems have answers at the end of each chapter. This, as well as the clear writing, makes this text also perfect for self study.

Poorly written and annoying
As with many books on this sort of subject, this book starts out with the assumption everyone reading it has had calculus or higher.Not necessarily a bad assumption, but it's a poor starting place (math heavy).

Most books start out with talk about resistors, Ohm's law, KCL, etc etc. which I'm sure turns off many students to the subject.Instead they should get into the functional and literal uses for each component they will encounter, describing how it works, describing how the electrons would flow in each, etc.That kind of description is lost almost everywhere (and does not even appear in this book at all).

Mostly useless to any EE
The style is pretty basic and bland.It provides not a whole lot of material.

Good Reference Material
I enjoyed this book and it is very helpful as reference material. It is a good companion to other electrical engineering material.

Excellent, concise EE reference
It's been over 10 years since I completed my electrical engineering studies.I was looking for something that would help refresh my memory, and that I could refer to for formulas and graphs, as I jump back in to do my master's degree.This book seemed a little pricey, but compared to the other books out there, this one is the only thing I could find that met all my requirements: compact, sturdy, and thorough, covering all topics of electrical engineering, from analog to digital (I don't care so much about power systems, but that's in there too).

Formulas, graphs, and tables are all clearly laid out and easy to read/understand.No space is wasted with sample problems, which are best reserved for textbooks and test-prep books.Figures are used extensively todepict graphs, circuits, etc., which add nicely to the readability of the sections.

Dreadful
I had the unfortunate experience of having an undergraduate class based on this book.
I found the explanations and theory for a book claiming to be "For Electrical Engineering" to be needlessly complex and outside of practical knowledge and I say this as a person who generally enjoys the theory of mathematics. Each section is punctuated with examples which were either exceedingly simple and of no use in aiding understanding of the subject or challenging yet incomplete and only sometimes useful in helping solve the end of chapter questions. The end of chapter questions follow a similar theme with difficulties ranging from far too simple (and occasionally not even particularly related or pertinent) to nearly unsolvable for any student who doesn't already have sufficient previous experience with the subject.

That all being said, I found this book to be a terrible resource to learn from or be taught from. I do however see how this book could be used, to some success, as secondary material in a class that is well structured and well instructed. I would not recommend this book alone for anyone who expects to learn the subject with any amount of relative ease, although it is possible to do so with unnecessary amounts of effort and stress.

An excellent reference for EEs
I really like this book. It covers the subject in both depth and breadth. Answers to selected problems are included along with many useful examples. A must have reference.

Decent book (judging from 2nd edition)
I will also comment on the negative reviews received by the book so far. It is true that there are 'better' stochastic processes books out there if the comparison is made in mathematical rigor for example or even in the unsolved problems etc. However the book holds a value of its own. I personally use it to teach stochastic processes to students who are not mathematicians. I find that it covers a great variety of topics leaving no important gaps on the way. Also I find each chapter of a particular importance. I dont understand why other reviewers found for example chapter 3 problematic.

To finilize my comment, I think that this book is written in a mathematical mood (the sequence of chapters and the approach, also using CDF instead of PDF) but simplified for people who do not want to go deep into the maths of stochastic processes, so I would love to had been tought this textbook in my engineering degree.

Lots of examples, sparce content, horribly worded problems
The content of each section starts with theory overview and then moves straight into detailed examples heavy in math details.I'm usually one that loves lots of examples but these are mostly useless as the problem statements in both the examples and end of the chapters are written like the author made them up at the last minute.Variable presented are undefined, numbers are reversed from intended or vague, too many assumptions are made and steps left out, and even his standardized variable definitions can get confusing as pointed out before (x, X, x', etc).By the way, the solutions are even worse.

All problems and examples are heavy in difficult math concepts.I know the book is on difficult concepts but it feels like the author likes showing off when the concepts can be explained and practiced in better ways.

The course I'm in is heavy on homework from the back of the book and the problems statements and solutions manual is driving me crazy.I'm tired of trying to read the authors mind and apply difficult concepts at the same time.Over all this book hopefully going to be more useful after this course as a reference then it's been as a learning tool.

Good Book

Perfect for engineering majors
This book has everything you would expect for engineering. A must have for Engineering majors. And it's cheep!

Truly fantastic reference.
I must admit here at the beginning that I am a bit of a snob when it comes to this type of book.I have reference books dating back a century for the sole reason that I do not trust nor like modern works.The current trend in reference is to provide only that information which will provide the reader with exactly what they want at that exact moment.This methodology requires that the reader return continually to the reference, wasting their time and energy.Older works provide a broader view of given topics and therefore tend to be held in my favor.This work may well be - in my opinion - the last of the great engineering references.

As stated by another reviewer, this work does an excellent job of covering most of the topics and information normally contained within a four-year mechanical engineering degree.This is not to say it is an apt replacement for a degree, just an excellent accessory to one.

Unlike the majority of generalized engineering references, this publication surpasses the norm of a mishmash of datasheets cribbed from manufacturers.The information contained is highly valuable, universally applicable and beautifully organized.That being said, it is true that the content is highly codified and would be of little value to those individuals who are unfamiliar with 'higher' level mathematics or engineering.

There are those in the engineering community who will find this reference lacking in specific topics - say, technical drafting, GD&T or materials science - but on the whole it is truly superb.

My only concern after having owned it for twenty-four hours is how I am going to reinforce the binding to keep the book from falling apart from too much use...

A good reference, even for the PE Exam
This little book is a good tool to add to your tool box.It has a fairly complete tabulation of formulas and even goes into some depth explaining them, but not too much.The only reason it got 4 vs 5 stars for therating was that the index is not cross referenced.I got the book as an aid for my first attempt at the PE Exam, and it earned its way on several questions- mechanics of materials especially.I strongly recommend this book to anyone in engineering who needs a pocket guide.

A must have!
This book is just awesome!

First thing you notice when you open the box: it's tiny!
The book measures about 11.5x15.5 CM for a thickness of 3 CM.
This format makes it very easy to carry around!

It's packed with LOADS of info which cover so many fields! Plus it's printed on 1 side only, which gives you some space to add notes. The table at the beginning (literally at the beginning - on the cover!) makes finding the info you're looking for very easy: each section is designated by a letter. In each section the progression is the same: from the basics up to the most advanced.

Very very handy, a must have! I which I had it when I was studying engineering man !! There's basically almost everything you need in there! Looking through it I was amazed at all the stuff that was coming back to my memory!

The hardcover is good, it makes the book strong (and feel strong).

I think the best feature of this book is that it covers many subjects, with a broad range of complexity level. That means whether you're just looking for some basic information to refresh your memory or get up to date with something, or if you are looking for some serious formulas and calculation, it's in there!
I know that I will probably not use much of the advanced calculation presented, but I might come across a few, and this little book is gonna make the thing easy :)

This textbook did come "like new" as was indicated, along with the tear-out reference cards intact.

Through my college career, I have run into incredibly well written books. This is not one of them. Explanations are short, and half-arsed. Many examples leave steps out, implying that you should 'know' them. I'm not one of those students who can sit through a lecture and understand everything the professor says. The book is okay. It helped me to get through my basic electrical engineering course for my Mechanical Engineering degree. A little confusing at times, but it'll do the job.

incorrect equations/little explanation
The author doesn't clarify his points and leaves to many questions unanswered. This book often says things like "The value of flux in the core will be given by this equation" without specifying where this came from. He will also combine multiple equations and simply allow the definition of variables to change.

This book is terrible. The text is impossible to actually find anything useful. The examples are just laughable. They are so far of a stretch for the material, honestly they usually are way way way too hard for any test or homework. The problems at the end of the chapter always have tons of errors. Our teacher corrected the book over and over. I'm sure the only reason we used it is because he is a professor at my school. Disappointed
This review applies to the Kindle version.

I have graduate degrees in physics and bioengineering and took several courses in electrical engineering as an undergraduate senior and in graduate school, but I am not a full blown electrical engineer. I know (knew?) enough for my needs. I purchased this book as a refresher and companion to Horowitz and Hill because this volume is available for my Kindle. The reviews convinced me this would be a good buy. I don't dispute the content and the writing style is good. There are, however, many, many typos in the figures, examples, and in line symbols. I am only 50 pages or so into the book and have been very frustrated that I am now proof reading a book when I wanted to be refreshing my understanding. Example, Figure 2.1 lists Mica with a resistivity of 1X10 ^ -13 ohms m, or 10 ^7 micro ohms m and glass as 1X10 ^ 8 ohm m or 10^4 micro ohm m. Fine, I can unwind things like this, but I am nervous as I get into the more advanced chapters where I'm counting on the book to give me accurate information. If you already know the material, you can read the book and correct the typos. If not, be careful. I don't know if the same errors exist in the hard bound version. Maybe someone who has it can check...

Excellent Resource for EE's
This book is quite a tome; at over 1000 pages it covers nearly the complete span of topics found in a EE bachelors program!It is soft-bound but sturdy; I have every reason to believe it will hold up the frequent use that I'll have for it!

While my Computer Engineering degree covered most of the topics covered in this text, it's been 14 years, and I've forgotten a lot of it. This book provides a very thorough overview of the topics covered with excellent example problems.While I don't think this book would be enough to base an entire degree, it does make for a great review and will find a treasured spot on my reference bookshelf!

I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking such a reference book on the general field of EE.

I particularly liked the section on Digital Electronics by Clive Maxfield.In several sub-sections he explains topics that I never really understood from my many classes on the topic!

I really can find nothing wrong with this work.I wish I'd had it 14 years ago!

This book can be used to translate your college textbook
I have to say I'm not crazy about the title, it is too general and promises more then it should.However I was very impressed with the explanations given for the various topics covered.My weakest point in my engineering curriculum were laplace transforms so I went straight to Transients and Laplace Transforms to see if it could help me understand a little better (and eight years out of school).To my surprise I was able to understand exactly what was going on and the equations were perfectly laid out to see how everything fit together, not bad for being out of school for so long.

I continued looking through the book and wondered why in the world they would have a section on Circuit Simulation with so many different software programs available.Yet after reviewing the section, it was actually very informative and talked specifically about the type of tests that were performed like DC analysis and AC small signal analysis as well as pole zero analysis and noise analysis regards to the types of tests and analysis that go on in software like Tina Pro, MultiSim or SPICE.

In reviewing the Filter Design chapter, lets face it Signals and Systems wasn't my strong point,once again the explanations were easy to follow and yet enough so that I could continue with a more complex book in needed.

I would suggest this book to any college student who wants to get a better explanation on the topic that they are currently studying.This would be a great primer for Electronics, Analog and Signals and Systems.For any electrical engineer out of school that needs a quick review on a topic not seen for a while, this book would be an excellent reference.

But as mentioned in another review, be careful with the figures as section 17.3.3 mentions a low pass filter and references figure 17.7 which are high pass filter graphs.If you can pick out the problems then you are in the right field of work.

Electrical Engineering: Know it All, A REFERENCE BOOK
I have a copy of Electrical Engineering: know it all. This book comes with an interesting premise: you can know it all about Electrical Engineering. To get there, you do need to have a background in engineering, or be studying Electrical Engineering, and then this book can become your back up for "everything" you have studied. It is similar to "The Art of Electronics" (Horowitz and Hill) in some ways. I will be keeping both on my shelf.

The table of contents is the best description of what is in the book. It starts from the basics, and covers the basis of every electrical engineering course you took (or didn't), and some courses that may have come into being since you started your engineering career. The authors (all are authors) of the chapters know the material well, and present it as thoroughly as can be done in the few pages given. Pertinent equations are given through out, and explained. Of course, some of the equations are just reminders of what you learned "years" ago.

Please proceed with caution as you read the book. Some figures have things a little backward, like those in Figure 17.3 (high and low pass filters reversed).

Remember, this is a reference book. As such, you cannot just use it to learn electrical engineering. Having the background will help you use it in work or engineering school. It is complete enough to help you resolve a problem, and also has references you can turn to if you need more.

Well Written
I am an Architect studying for the licensing exam. I purchased this book for additional study material. Even though it is written for electrical engineers/electricians, because it is so well written, I was able to understand the principles taught.

The previous reviewer comments on my saying fiber optic cable is difficult to splice.He takes my words out of context.I said what I did to emphasize that only skilled, experienced individuals should work with fiber optics.No one can deny that splicing copper cables is not as challenging as splicing optical networks, or that people without proper training and certification should not do so.

He also comments on my disparaging remarks about HVAC designers.I am licensed to seal mechanical and hvac projects as well as electrical.I have another book published with McGraw-Hill "Retrofitting for Energy Conservation" which is mostly mechanical.In proper context, I said that HVAC designers are lazy when specifying electrical components for HVAC systems.For example, they routinely spec variable frequency drives for all motors, globally.Assuming that VFD's are the most efficient options.Another important factor is the facility - a small, rural, or remote facility might be better served with a two speed motor, which is almost as efficient as a VFD.My comments on this were intended to motivate electrical designers to get more involved in the specification of mechanical systems, so that the most efficient system can be provided to the client.

I will clarify these points in the next edition, and I appreciate their being brought to my attention.

Not what I expected !!!!!!!!!!1
This book might have a lot of useful information, but it definitely wasn't what I expected. The book is literally too small. What I expected was a very large book with many photos of electrical equipment in commercial buildings, enough photos to thoroughly educate someone in the design of commercial building electrical systems. It seems that everyone compromises when writing a technical book like this,,,,,,,,and that is what makes people like me return such books.

This book needs to go back through editorial review.Many figures are mis-labeled and out of sequence.Most of the details and drawings are so small that you cannot read them even with a magnifying glass.The general content is practical and useable.I'd give the content a "B+", but the presentation and delivery a "D-".
