Product Description
Despite their significance as part of the burial equipment, canopic items have hitherto received relatively little attention in the literature of Egyptology. This book documents and discusses all equipment made or used to contain the embalmed internal organs of the kings of ancient Egypt. While some containers were simple stone jars, many were objects of great artistic attainment, the high point perhaps being reached with the solid gold coffinettes of Tutankhamun and the gilded shrine that sheltered them. Such royal canopics are also of some historical import, one set of jars being key evidence of the existence of a new pharoah of the Third Intermediate Period. The book is divided into two parts. The first traces the mythological development of the various forms of container employed in kingly burials, with frequent reference to comparative material from the tombs of lesser members of the royal family and private individuals. The architectural arrangements made for the equipment are also commented upon and illustrated. In doing so, certain points of history and archaeology relating to royal burial are discussed in detail. The arrangement of the section is chronological, individual chapters being devoted to each of the principal eras of ancient Egyptian history. The second part catalogues all known canopic items belonging to the kings of Egypt from the Fourth to the Twenty-Sixth Dynasties. Full details of material, dimensions, provenance, present location and bibliography are given. Photographs or drawings are provided for all significant pieces. Hand copies of all hieroglyphic texts are accompanied by translations, and a full concordance with museum excavator's numbers is given. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed and informative
This book is replete with information, making it a very good read. The author goes into much detail here, giving coherent and plenary information on canopic jars, etc. It may prove a bit dry for the neophyte, but even an avid amateur will enjoy the descriptions. ... Read more

Product Description
In a rare gesture of feminine ambition, Queen Hatshepsut (Hâtshopsîtû) assumed the throne of Egypt shortly after the death of her husband, Tuthmosis II, holding on to power for two decades until 1458 BC. As pharaoh, she prepared a burial for herself in the Valley of the Kings. This extraordinary, spiral tomb was first cleared by Howard Carter, for Theodore M. Davis, between 1903 and 1904. Though officially emptied in antiquity, the tomb still contained many fragments of the burial, and two superb sarcophagi prepared for both the queen herself and for her father, Tuthmosis I. The Tomb of Hâtshopsîtû, first published in 1906, is Davis’ official account of this important discovery, with contributions on the historical background from Édouard Naville, and on the tomb’s excavation and finds by Carter himself, who was also responsible for the plates. ... Product Description
This study reveals a highly diversified and unique pattern of habitation in the Nile Valley. The main focus of this work is the New Kingdom which offers the largest number of sites from any one period. Previously, most studies of Egyptian urbanism have focused exclusively on the site of Tell el-Armana which has become the paradigm for ancient Egyptian settlements. Critical to our understanding of Egyptian urbanism is the question of just how representative of pharaonic town planning Amarna truly is. To resolve this problem, this study contrasts Amarna with what available data exists from other sites. One important source for such a comparison is the Second Intermediate Period site of Deir el-Ballas. This "incipient" Amarna may well have served as the prototype for the revised urbanism of the New Kingdom. This study also reviews the data from other New Kingdom settlements on a "micro-spatial" level, dealing with both the forms of individual structures as well as the overall community layout. Comparisons between the overall plans of the various settlements and the various elements which comprise them reveal a "mental temple" of urban structure that existed in ancient Egypt. ... Product Description
The relevance of royal inscriptions, Herodotus and Manetho in order to reconstruct the chronology and history of ancient Egypt has been fundamental in scholarly research since Champollion's times. Those sources, however, together with other historical and pseudo-historical material such as the Bentresh and Famine stelae are here analysed as historical documents per se, completely disregarding their value for the histoire evenementielle. Genre and format of royal inscriptions become important in order to establish the power of the tradition, while all the historical sources mentioned above embody hopes, fears, as well as social and cultural conflicts existing in Egyptian society at the times they were written. ...
