5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent way to catch up on Egyptology studie

In a field where so much is known, and yet there seems to be so much yet to learn, it is useful from time to time for the general reader to catch up through a survey of current developments. Richard H. Wilkinson has done a marvelous job for ancient Egyptian studies in the well illustrated Egyptology Today.

Wilkinson contributed a well written introduction to the twelve essays, and an interesting afterword predicting future efforts and developments. The essays are written by scholars from the US, the UK, and Egypt. They describe their researches and experiences -- history of their fields, trends in methodology, current controversies, and future trends. There is an excellent index, and an extensive bibliography for further study.

Chapters cover museum display, language, literature, religion, art, artifact conservation, history, medical science, site surveys, epigraphy, and monument and site conservation.

Kent R. Weeks's essay on Egyptian archaeology provides a fair sample of the clear writing here:

"Around 1250 BC, the High Priest of Ptah at Memphis, Khaemwese, fourth-born son of Ramesses II, cleared and repaired nearly a dozen pyramids and temples at Giza and Saqqara. Even in his day, they were ruins over a thousand years old, and he restored them, he said, because he "so greatly loved antiquity" that he could not bear to see them falling into decay." Modern scholars have called Khaemwese the world's first archaeologist. Certainly, he was an enthusiastic supporter of archaeological preservation: he believed that by protecting religious buildings he honored Egypt's ancestors and ensured that contemporary religious practices would remain true to older - and therefore purer - forms of worship."

I particularly enjoyed the sidebar information which summarized various topics, for example this list of 15 people who increased our knowledge and improved archeology:

1. Giovanni Battista Belzoni (1772-1823). Italian, uncovered the entrance to the Giza pyramid
of Chephren and the Valley of the Kings tomb of Seti I and made many other discoveries.
2. Auguste Ferdinand Mariette (1821-1881) - see text.
3. Alexander Henry Rhind (1833-1863) - see text.
4. Gaston Camille Maspero (1846-1916) - see text.
5. William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) - see text.
6. James Edward Quibell (1867-1935). British student of Petrie, excavated in the Valley of the
Kings and extensively at Saqqara.
7. George Andrew Reisner (1867-1942) - see text.
8. Hermann Junker (1877-1962). German-Austrian priest, excavated various sites, including
predynastic Merimde and, most importantly, Giza, where 15 years' work resulted in a masterful
12-volume study of its mastaba tombs.
9. Herbert EustisWinlock (1884-1950). American, worked for the Metropolitan Museum of Art
at several sites, especially the Deir el-Bahari cirque; considered one of the finest archaeologists
of his day; his discoveries were among the century's most important.
10. Howard Carter (1873-1939). English discoverer of the tomb of Tutankhamun; meticulous
record-keeper, artist.
11. Selim Hassan (1886-1961). First Egyptian professor of Egyptology at Cairo University; excavated
at many sites, but best known for his work at Giza which he published in over 12
volumes.
12. Walter Bryan Emery (1903-1971). English, worked extensively in Nubia and in Early Dynastic
remains at Saqqara.
13. Margaret Benson (1865-1916). The first woman to be granted a concession to dig in Egypt,
at the Temple of Mut in the Karnak complex.
14. Gertrude Caton-Thompson (1888-1985). English archaeologist best known for her excavations
of the prehistoric Fayum.
15. Jean-Philippe Lauer (1902-2001). French archaeologist and architect who for over 70 years
dug and studied Early Dynastic and Old Kingdom remains at Saqqara.

*****

This book is thought provoking and a scholarly, and a yet very readable, introduction for anyone interested in ancient Egypt.

Product Description
This book is written for high school students and beginners. It avoids using complicated grammar. The examples are kept simple. In many cases the hieroglyphs are "unrolled" - each hieroglyphic word is presented to the student one hieroglyph at a time, just as we write an English word one letter at a time. Each hieroglyph is treated as if it were a letter. This makes it much easier for the beginning student. Volume 1 consists of a series of simple lessons which when completed will enable the student to read many simple hieroglyphic sentences and significant parts of more complex sentences. The grammar presented is "Middle Egyptian" which is the most common version taught. It is not necessary to have previously studied any other foreign language. In many ways, learning ancient Egyptian will be easier for the student who has never studied a foreign language before. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars High School Hieroglyphs
A superb book, marked Volume One, suggesting that more are to follow ( I hope).Prof. Nichols has succeeded admirably in his intention to present a simplified starting point for the study of Egyptian hieroglyphs.Although intended for high school students, it is a witty, relevant, and effective introduction for adults as well. He comments briefly on other grammars and dictionaries for hieroglyphs, which is helpful for building one's own library. He additionally has added materials on YouTube, etc. I found his examples to be clear, both in explanations and in the fonts for the hieroglyphs. The book includes a listing of hieroglyphs used, following Gardiner's notation. I did not find information on how to write hieroglyphs, which would be useful if one did not have access to"Ancient Egyptian Calligraphy" by H. G. Fischer. I assume that hieroglyph calligraphy would be taught in the classroom, for those taking a formal class. The book is also available in Kindle format. Perhaps as his work continues Prof. Nichols would consider adding a set of vocabulary flash cards, or perhaps illustrations of rooms, houses, people, etc, with items labeled in both English and hieroglyphs ( rather like the Duden Pictorial Dictionaries). This is the best introduction to Egyptian hieroglyphs that I have found, and reflects current knowledge of the subject, unlike Budge's books. ... Read more

The artists of Ancient Egypt reached a level of sophistication and technical mastery unsurpassed by other early peoples. They perfected a style which was less naturalistic than that later employed by the Greeks and Romans but which is particularly fascinating to the modern eye because of its combination of realistic and symbolic elements. This book aims to help the reader to such an understanding, concentrating particularly on points that may puzzle the modern western viewer. The principles of representation underlying Egyptian art, which differ fundamentally from western conventions rooted in perspective, are elucidated and the materials and methods used by the artists described.Of great importance was the technique of drawing a squared grid over the surface to be decorated, and the use of this grid system as an aid for obtaining correct proportions is explained, together with its influence on the composition of whole scenes.A chapter is devoted to the fascinating and highly individual work produced during the reign of the heretic king Akhenaten. ... Product Description
This book surveys the main kinds of urban settlement and town planning that existed in ancient Egypt before the Hellenistic period. The evolution and growth of Predynastic villages is traced as an essential prelude to the much greater achievements of the Pharaohs in establishing first towns and then cities. The later growths are shown to be of two basic types, royal foundations and those which underwent a natural expansion throughout history. From this they are classified as constituting various standard types based on function: provincial centres, planned workmen's villages, military and frontier towns, towns inhabited by funerary priests and, ultimately, royal residences and the capitals. The range of size and material is tremendous, covering small closely knit communities of a few hundred people, towns with several thousand inhabitants and vast cities, as large as any in the ancient world, with tens of thousands of citizens. ... Product Description
'She who was irch in fine lineen, who loved clothes, lies in the cast-off garment of yesterday.' So ends an ancient Egyptian funeral lament, and indeed these textiles have frequently become the neglected cast-off rags of today, lying undiscovered in museum basements. This book attempts to rectify the situation by assessing the archaeological importance of textiles, describing and illustrating recently 'rediscovered' garments, and translating little known related texts.A survey of the nature and quality of woven fabrics and dyeing processes is followed by a techanical description of spinning and weaving.Representations of costume on reliefs and statuary are viewed chronologically, and the often divergent extant garments are then described.A complete chapter is devoted to the wardrobes of Tutankhamun and other Pharaohs. The Egyptian laundry service is discussed: methods of washing and pleating, laundry lists and marks, and the washermen's complaints.Sewing and darning equipment and methods, with an inventory of embroidery stitches and dressmaking techniques, are described for the first time.A conclusion is reached on dress as a status symbol in ancient Egypt by a survey of garment prices and of all types of specific dress, or undress, from that vizier to prostitute. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A Basic introduction but not complete
This book was rated so highly that I bought it thinking that I would learn a score of information about ancient Egyptian warfare. However, this was not the case. This book only conglomerates notions of warfare that anyone could have picked up from reading at least three texts in Pharonic Egyptian history. The topic is dealt with only at a medicore level and unfortunately, does not go into enough detail about the conquests of Ahmose (the Hyksos expeller) and Thutmose III (who expanded the empire to its greatest extent).Instead I got the same old stuff: a description of the battle of Kadesh, Megido, and the invasion by the Sea-Peoples.Although, I sound harsh in this review, it is still a good book, just don't think it will answer all of your questions unless you do further research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant reading on Egyptian Warfare
This new booklet in the series "Shire Egyptology" is warmfully welcomed. It was time to have a short, concise, serious and nice synthesis on actual knowledge about Warfare in times of the Pharaohs. The book is nicely designed, as it is usual in this series, and the text is accompanied by 52 figures with useful images of unfrequently depicted material on the subject-matter. Recommended as a must-have-it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get the clearest picture with the least effort
Ian Shaw is a relatively well known scholar in the field of Ancient Egyptian studies. This book is one of several books he has written.Little is written in the field of ancient weaponry. Ian Shaw makes a great contribution to this field by gathering into one source the necessary inscriptions, paintings, and archaeological evidence to create one of the clearest views of ancient Egyptian warfare and the weapons they used. The organization of the book begins with fortifications, enemies of Egypt, and the Egyptian Army.Ian Shaw does a good job of identifying Egypt's enemies with primary documents such as the "Execration Texts," that give a list of everyone that the Egyptians desired to destroy. He also provides ample examples of fortifications and discusses archaeological remains from several fortresses, most notably Buhen -- one of the most well preserved fortifications in Egypt. He provides photographs of material remains of weapons and analyzes reliefs and other wall inscriptions. This combination brings to life the various periods of ancient Egypt and gives the reader a good understanding, through examples and illustrations, of the "why" and "how" of Egyptian fortifications and weapons. Next Ian Shaw provides us with descriptions of two of the most famous ancient Egyptian battles of Megiddo and Qadesh as examples of Egyptian strategies and international diplomacy. The battle of Megiddo brought all of the Palestine region under the control of Egypt. This region was important because of Egypt's lack of wood and other desired resources. The book recreates the battle and simplifies it to show the strategies used by the Pharaoh (Tuthmosis III) to conquer the city. After describing the battle of Megiddo Ian Shaw uses letters such as Ribaddi's to show that Egypt also used diplomacy to control the area of Syro-Palestine.Lastly the book illustrates in photographs and interpretations the great battle of Rameses to against the Hittites at Qadesh. This battle has never been more clear with illustrations of troop placements and movements. Finally, Ian Shaw shows through wall reliefs the beginning and eventual decline of Egyptian military technology.Greater military powers, such as Assyria, beat down Egypt's frontier walls, and though none of them took total control over Egypt, it left them open to invasion from other peoples and finally to Alexander and his conquests. Ian Shaw creates a masterpiece of combining all of the different sources to compile all of the necessary and interesting pieces of the ancient Egyptian warfare and weapons puzzle. Anyone interested in this subject should begin with this book in order to get the clearest picture with the least effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inexpensive guide to the ancient Egyptian military.
If you are like me and have read hints in other books referring to the Egyptian military but have always wondered just what the structure of the army was at different points in Pharaonic history and how many men were ineach type of unit, this book is for you!Shaw whisks over topics relevantto ancient Egypt's military with chapters on "Egypt's Enemies","Fortresses and Frontiers", "The Egyptian Army","Weapons and Military Technology", "Imperial Strategies andInternational Diplomacy" and "Naval Battles" among others. A well-illustrated (b/w) little work (part of the Shire Egyptology series)that supplies good information without eating up your wallet and yourbookshelf. ... Read more

Can someone post a reliable-sounding review here? This looks like a scam.No one's ever heard of this guy and there's no intro to his book.

And who teaches Middle Egyptian to high schoolers?People interested in non-bogus works should get Faulkner's short book. It's the best for the lower price. There's also better works in German and French.

This is less subtle than that guy with all the books about aliens.

This is a dictionary type work that only a scholar would truly use all of. It is great if you need to know the Ancient Egyptian words for a college report. Youngsters will find it possibly a bit too much. If you are looking for an Ancient Egyptian to English translation this book will most likely have it, or a portion, so that the phrase can be found. I used this book in teaching a class to high schoolers and they thought it a good reference but sometimes a bit difficult to find the needed information. I would suggest a tab arrangement to mark out the symbols. This made it easier for my students to find various needed symbols. ... Read more

Product Description
The tomb of Tutankhamun (Tut.ankh.Amen), uncovered by the fifth Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter in November 1922, was the greatest archaeological find the world has ever seen. Though superficially plundered by thieves in antiquity, the burial remained intact, surrounded by a mass of funerary equipment arranged in three peripheral chambers. "The Tomb of Tut.ankh.Amen: The Burial Chamber" was originally published in 1927 as the second volume of Carter's trilogy. It records the work of the second and third seasons at the tomb: the opening of the four protective shrines; the discovery within of Tutankhamun's quartz-sandstone sarcophagus; the extraction of the king's three anthropoid coffins (the innermost of solid gold); and the final examination of the pharaoh's mummy. ...
