Product Description

"Ecosystem" is an intuitively appealing concept to most ecologists, but, in spite of its widespread use, the term remains diffuse and ambiguous. The authors of this book argue that previous attempts to define the concept have been derived from particular viewpoints to the exclusion of others equally possible. They offer instead a more general line of thought based on hierarchy theory. Their contribution should help to counteract the present separation of subdisciplines in ecology and to bring functional and population/community ecologists closer to a common approach.

Developed as a way of understanding highly complex organized systems, hierarchy theory has at its center the idea that organization results from differences in process rates. To the authors the theory suggests an objective way of decomposing ecosystems into their component parts. The results thus obtained offer a rewarding method for integrating various schools of ecology.

Product Description

Conventional management approaches cannot meet the challenges faced by ocean and coastal ecosystems today. Consequently, national and international bodies have called for a shift toward more comprehensive ecosystem-based marine management. Synthesizing a vast amount of current knowledge, Ecosystem-Based Management for the Oceans is a comprehensive guide to utilizing this promising new approach.

At its core, ecosystem-based management (EBM) is about acknowledging connections. Instead of focusing on the impacts of single activities on the delivery of individual ecosystem services, EBM focuses on the array of services that we receive from marine systems, the interactive and cumulative effects of multiple human activities on these coupled ecological and social systems, and the importance of working towards common goals across sectors. Ecosystem-Based Management for the Oceans provides a conceptual framework for students and professionals who want to understand and utilize this powerful approach. And it employs case studies that draw on the experiences of EBM practitioners to demonstrate how EBM principles can be applied to real-world problems.

The book emphasizes the importance of understanding the factors that contribute to social and ecological resilience —the extent to which a system can maintain its structure, function, and identity in the face of disturbance. Utilizing the resilience framework, professionals can better predict how systems will respond to a variety of disturbances, as well as to a range of management alternatives. Ecosystem-Based Management for the Oceans presents the latest science of resilience, while it provides tools for the design and implementation of responsive EBM solutions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic and professional
Ecosystem based management is a daunting scientific term that really means-- think about the neighborhood, not just the room where you watch t.v.Within the oceans, the rules have always focused on either a single species (e.g. save the whales) or on a specific action (spilling oil, building a marina, etc.).The whole inter-related system of what fish, marine mammals, and other species need to survive has not been integrated. You cannot have a predatory fish species managed without consideration of where it lays its eggs, where its young need to grow, and what it needs to eat-- we know, we've learned the hard way. This book provides a pragmatic view of how to view the implementation of relatively new federal priorities on how the whole system should work together-- and how we should do our best to provide management guidelines that integrate the rules for the whole system. This is not an easy task, but this is the first book that strives to inform us with the most recent science and strategy to give us the tools to get where we should have been all along. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece
This beautifully produced book is the summation of the author's life work in studying the Boundary Waters. Furthermore, it is the inspiration and groundwork for all subsequent work in the area. His intimacy with the ecosystem inspires awe at every turn. His great achievement was in using tree-ring analysis to reconstruct the entire fire history of the area, thus illuminating the dynamics of forest change.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all BWCA visitors!
I have traveled the BWCA for 30 years, but until reading this book never understood much about the history and ecology of the area. Bud Heinselman spent his life intently studying this magnificent forest, and left us awonderful legacy in this book.

He spent decades studying the fauna andflora of the BWCA, especially the trees of the forest. Combining thatinformation with his rich knowledge of the more recent history of the BWCA,especially of logging and mining, helps one understand just how the foresthas come to be as it is today.

He covers all aspects of the BWCA'secology: water, rocks, fish, trees, et. al. You may not realize how foreignthe smallmouth bass is to the area, or even how close the area came tobeing developed and lost forever. He provides maps of the area with theforests dated to their most recent burn or logging: you are able to look upyour favorite canoe routes and determine what trees are prevalent andwhy.

One of his major points is that modern fire fighting has altered thenatural ecology of the area: as fire has been suppressed, fuel on theforest floor has increased, leading to the potential for more severe"crown" fires which destroy even the ancient white and redpines.

This book is a must-read for all BWCA visitors and deserves aplace in the library of anyone that cares about ecology. TH Bracken MDsrtrout@yahoo.com ... Read more

Advance Praise for The Death of Competition "The Death of Competition certainly captures the essence of the change [that] we’re experiencing in the new internet ecosystem. Very prescient." —James L. Barksdale, president and CEO, Netscape "Moore catches the fundamental shift in business thinking—and behavior—today: the economy is not a mechanism, businesses are not machines. They are coevolving, unpredictable organisms within a constantly shifting business eco-system that no one controls.… Managers of companies both great and small must figure out how to coevolve in this changing environment—to compete with what the competition is becoming, not with what it is now." —Esther Dyson, president, Dyson-EDventure Holdings, Inc. "Unique, trustworthy counsel for leaders facing the new economy of empowered customers, global markets, and revolutionary technologies." —Robert E. Allen, CEO, AT&T. "The ecosystems approach and the biological analyses are very useful and very rich. [Moore’s] personal style gives me a sense of sharing and presence. This is not a textbook. It is an experience." —Bo Ekman, chairman and CEO, SIFO Management Group AB "The business world moving toward the twenty-first century needs a new language to construct its new reality.… [Moore’s] bold use of a biological metaphor … will help many businesspeople to start acting from a much deeper understanding of their own New World." —Arie P. DeGeus. (retired) head of Strategic Planning & Scenario Development, Royal Dutch Shell "Moore has reframed the leading-edge concepts of strategy and created an original, dynamic approach to thinking about enterprise, value creation, and the future. His images are powerful in both classroom and boardroom, inspiring students and policy makers alike to see new patterns and possibilities." —John Rosenblum. Total system leadership, according to business strategyconsultant James F. Moore, has replaced mere product superiority andeven complete industry dominance as today's corporate brass ring. InThe Death of Competition: Leadership & Strategy In the Age ofBusiness Ecosystems, he uses "biological ecology" as a metaphorfor the new type of cooperative/competitive relationships that hebelieves lead to that brass ring -- while guiding readers toward theunique interlocking networks that he says are necessary to attain it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A new way of thinking about business. - An important book
In The Death of Competition, James Moore asks us to reconsider the way we think about business at the most basic level. In this thought provoking analysis, Moore takes us from the Hawaiian Islands to the jungles of Costa Rica, and from war torn Mogadishu to the boardrooms of Wal-Mart and Intel.Clearly this is a book that goes far beyond the standard boundaries of a "business" book.

Moore tells us that we need to consider our business as being part of an "ecosystem".Whereas the value chain would encompass suppliers and distributors, the ecosystem is much broader.Members of the ecosystem may sell complimentary products, after sales services, or other products and services that are vital to the overall customer experience. Even when considering the members of the value chain, Moore tells us to think in terms of the ecosystem, and look for ways of making the connections deeper, stronger, and more to our advantage.Among other examples, Moore shows us how Wal-Mart, by forging relationships with suppliers that are much closer than the classic manufacturer-retailer relationship, has positioned itself at the center of an ecosystem that is stable and strong. In another section, he compares the way that Intel fostered an ecosystem around the Pentium line of microprocessors, and how the diversity and strength of this ecosystem kept other "ecosystems" such as Apple and Next, from encroaching. He also showed how Apple made it more difficult for other members of its ecosystem to co-evolve, making the entire Apple centered ecosystem weaker.

The central theme of the book is that business ecosystems, like biological ecosystems, evolve. Each of these evolutionary stages brings both opportunities and threats, and the businesses within ecosystems need to understand both the status of the ecosystem they are in, and their role in it, or they risk extinction.

First, Moore compares ecosystems in Hawaii and Costa Rica, showing how an isolated and protected ecosystem, such as Hawaii, can give rise to a rich and diverse ecosystem, but one that is fragile and easily overwhelmed by invading species.By comparison, the ecosystem of the Costa Rican jungle, on the bridge between North and South America, gives rise to species that have had to protect their niches from invaders on a regular basis, the result is a hardier, more robust ecosystem.

Having established the metaphor, Moore takes us through the four stages of ecosystem evolution: pioneering, growth, maturation, and renewal or death.First, he traces the history of the automotive industry ecosystems through all four stages, then he presents an in depth case study for each stage. The case studies are rich, diverse, and fascinating, ranging from the creation of a telephone system in Mogadishu to the prospects for health care in the U.S.Throughout the case studies Moore shows how decisions are made, and the effects of those decisions. In some of the most interesting analyses of the book, Moore examines the 7 "dimensions" of the ecosystem (customers, market, offers, processes, organizations, stakeholders, and values and policy) and shows how each of the dimensions evolve as the ecosystem evolves. He also shows us how to tell which stage of ecosystem evolution we are in, and what the critical success factors for each stage.

One of the most interesting, and surprising aspects of the book was Moore's emphasis on social responsibility, particularly for leading companies. An example of this emphasis is seen in the chapter on Wal-Mart.Moore notes that in many communities, Wal-Mart has completely displaced other retailers, and has done so in such an effective manner that there is no room for alternatives to enter the space. This strategy of "space packing" behind secure boundaries, has allowed Wal-Mart to grow into a huge organization and stable ecosystem. At the same time, Moore notes that this strategy leaves communities vulnerable to Wal-Mart, and hence opens Wal-Mart to a greater level of scrutiny than most other businesses."In short, Wal-Mart is not just another business within its environment, and it should not expect to be treated as one.Perhaps the largest managerial challenge facing Wal-Mart today is how to invest in the relationship building, the public campaigning, and the substantive policy studies to assume its role as a leader of communities."Wow! Not just a business, but a leader of communities.

Moore carries this idea further in the final chapter, as he asks us first to think about our personal "ecosystems", and then to put the business ecosystem into a wider context.Moore states "As you invest in your own personal learning system and begin to experience problems more holistically,... a shift occurs in your perspective."First, he asks us to consider how "business is totally dependent on society", and how the "changing tides in a society" create the environment in which business operates.Next, he asks us to consider economic systems as subsystems of biological systems. After all, if all economic systems were eliminated, biological systems would still exist, but if the biological system were eliminated, the economic systems would not last very long. The upshot of this line of thought is that business needs to consider the impact it has as a business ecosystem interacts with and sometimes clashes with societal and biological ecosystems.

And it was here, in these final thoughts that Moore impressed me the most, and showed how this book is broader in scope, and more important than most other business books. No, this book won't tell you how to get new customers tomorrow, how to beat your competition or squeeze more productivity out of your employees. All this book will do is ask you to reconsider everything you thought about business and its place in society. That, I would say makes this book one of the most important books you could read.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is really about leadership and vision.
Today's buisness environment needs leadership. There are many well studied reports about the changing face of competition -- but few are able to integrate them with the leaders that Mr. Moore uses in his examples. The author has done a great job of presenting the"state-of-the-union" of the competition-cooperation landscapewith his biology metaphore. He has done an outstanding job of illustratingthe quality and nature of the leaders who led their companies through thevarious stages he describes. This book is worth reading and re-reading forleaders and leader wannabees.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leadership is as important as strategy
This book illustrates that leadership, like good ideas are lasting.I am encouraged that the ideas about leadership that Jim Moore is presenting have the staying power to make it into the hands of our leaders. As acollege professor, I was very impressed when Vice President Al Gorerecently referred to this book as an example of business leadership and theAmerican pioneering spirit. The comparisson to the pioneering aspect ofthe Internet and todays business transition is very appropriate.Afterlistening to Al Gore and reading the book, I think that he actually readit.Normally politicians will only refer to something on the best sellerlist and employ superficial quotes from the most recent Sunday paperpromos.

After reading this book, I found it to be thoughtfull, clear andmore appropriate today than when it was originally published.

This bookis worth the read for non-business and business leaders alike.I hopeother leaders read this book as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book the convergence business is actually reading
The ecosystem approach to analyzing industries described by Moore is powerful. My friends managing high tech companies have used Moore's concepts and approachs to great success, particularly in changing and converging environments.Companies must learn to co-evolve and cooperate. This book tells you how. ... Product Description

The study of ecosystems, fundamental to ecology, has been complemented by the growing field of landscape ecology. Ecosystem Function in Heterogeneous Landscapes addresses how interactions among ecosystems affect the functioning of individual ecosystems and the larger landscape. This groundbreaking synthesis unites ecosystem ecology's knowledge of system function with landscape ecology's knowledge of spatial structure.

Practical concerns about scaling up from individual ecosystems to larger landscapes require an understanding of how networks of interacting ecosystems function together. The book elucidates the challenges faced by ecosystem scientists working in spatially heterogeneous systems, relevant conceptual approaches used in other disciplines and in different ecosystem types, and the importance of spatial heterogeneity in conservation resource management. The distinguished authors discuss how how much heterogeneity needs to be taken into account for specific types of scientific and management issues.  Their chapters cover the spectrum from proposing novel conceptual approaches to detailing the practical implications of heterogeneous landscapes for fire management, water management and conservation planning.

Product Description

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Synthesis Report boils down the findings of the four working groups into a simple, straightforward description of Earth’s ecological health and its linkages to human well-being. It answers a series of key questions, such as:

How have ecosystems changed over the past 50 years?

What are the most critical factors causing ecosystem damage?

What options do we have for better conserving, restoring, and benefiting from ecosystems?

The volume then presents a snapshot of the health and prospects for each of the main services that ecosystems provide, including the provision of food, water, timber, fuel, climate regulation, disease prevention, and others. The Synthesis Report will prove ideal for students and laypersons interested in a quick, but nuanced, understanding of the state of Earth’s ecosystems.

5-0 out of 5 stars blue ribbon panel presents its conclusions
In June 2001 the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment was launched under the auspices of the United Nations at the request of Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The resulting effort has been a remarkable collaboration of over 1,300 blue ribbon scientists from 95 countries, a governing board of the broadest possible stakeholders--international organizations, financial institutions, health workers, governments, business leaders, NGOs, and indigenous peoples, and funding from broad and diverse quarters. The MA was tasked to "assess the consequences of ecosystem change for human well-being and to establish the scientific basis for actions needed to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems and their contributions to human well-being." Scientific credibility, policy relevance, and well-being for all human beings guide the report. Their first product was Ecosystems and Human Well-Being: A Framework for Assessment (2003), which set out the conceptual and methodological foundations of the project.

The current Synthesis focuses on four core questions. How have ecosystems changed over the last 50 years? What have been the gains and losses? What are the prospects for the next 50 years? How might we reverse ecosystem degradation and enhance human well-being? In addition, the Synthesis reviews their findings on nine key questions, and then adds five appendices. Where needed, the report qualifies the "certainty" of their findings as "very certain, high, medium, low and very uncertain." Some losses, for example, are already irreversible. Nonlinear changes are more complicated to predict. Tradeoffs are quite common and shift responsibilities and costs to different stakeholders. Monetary-market values are important, but so are non-monetary-non-market ones. One finding is clear: a disproportionate share of ecosystem degradation is being borne by the very poor who are most impacted by it. The Synthesis does not admit to simple solutions, and reads as a very sober and sobering document, but in fact it identifies itself as guardedly optimistic in the sense that our wise choices in the future could make significant, positive differences.

The very first sentence of the Bible invests our world with an inherent value, in and of itself: God created the world, declared it very good, and then asked human beings to manage it as His stewards. That alone, it would seem, would cause Christians to care very deeply about issues of environment and ecosystems. In addition, there is a utilitarian argument to make. We are, as the Synthesis puts it, "fundamentally dependent upon" and "integral parts of" the ecosystem. Our fate is bound up with the fate of the planet. You might not know know about biomes, eutrophication, or mean trophic levels. I didn't. But you will still understand much of this important document. I hope it finds its way into the hearts and minds of many believers and their churches. ... Read more

Product Description

Life itself as well as the entire human economy depends on goods and services provided by earth's natural systems. The processes of cleansing, recycling, and renewal, along with goods such as seafood, forage, and timber, are worth many trillions of dollars annually, and nothing could live without them. Yet growing human impacts on the environment are profoundly disrupting the functioning of natural systems and imperiling the delivery of these services.

Nature's Services brings together world-renowned scientists from a variety of disciplines to examine the character and value of ecosystem services, the damage that has been done to them, and the consequent implications for human society. Contributors including Paul R. Ehrlich, Donald Kennedy, Pamela A. Matson, Robert Costanza, Gary Paul Nabhan, Jane Lubchenco, Sandra Postel, and Norman Myers present a detailed synthesis of our current understanding of a suite of ecosystem services and a preliminary assessment of their economic value. Chapters consider:

  • major services including climate regulation, soil fertility, pollination, and pest control
  • philosophical and economic issues of valuation
  • case studies of specific ecosystems and services
  • implication of recent findings and steps that must be taken to address the most pressing concerns
Nature's Services represents one of the first efforts by scientists to provide an overview of the many benefits and services that nature offers to people and the extent to which we are all vitally dependent on those services. The book enhances our understanding of the value of the natural systems that surround us and can play an essential role in encouraging greater efforts to protect the earth's basic life-support systems before it is too late. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A classic and a must-read
Are you interested in environmental issues, natural resource policy, or understanding how ecosystems silently enable our society to function? If so you must read this book.

Almost 10 years has passed since this edited volume was published (edited by Gretchen Daily), and there has been considerable progress on some fronts. Accordingly and expectedly, some of the estimates of the values of services are out-dated, but there are crucial contributions here in the framework for understanding and characterizing such ecosystem services (the flow of benefits from ecosystems to people). This book sparked an immense scholarly and public interest in ecosystem services that has not even begun to peak. In order to enable our society to persist sustainably, we *must* understand our dependence on ecosystem services and incorporate this understanding into societal decision-making.

Top-notch scholars contributed to this excellent volume, which continues to be cited frequently in first-rate academic papers and to cause ripples in broader society.

4-0 out of 5 stars Francisco gets badly translated.
I haven't read this book. But I think that maybe it would be good if the only review --which is in spanish-- were translated. Here's Francisco's review:

This edition is important on the themes of environmental economy and the underestimation of ecosystem health, for humanity surges to break little known ecosystems, synergies, and the diverse benefits they bring, much of which we don't know.
So, this book approaches the important elements, for the process of optimizing the utilization of ecosystems, from philosophic, environmental, and economic perspectives.

... Read more

Product Description
Nowhere on Earth is the challenge for ecological understanding greater, and yet more urgent, than in those parts of the globe where human activity is most intense - cities. People need to understand how cities work as ecological systems so they can take control of the vital links between human actions and environmental quality, and work for an ecologically and economically sustainable future. An ecosystem approach integrates biological, physical and social factors and embraces historical and geographical dimensions, providing our best hope for coping with the complexity of cities. This book is the first of its kind to bring together leaders in the biological, physical and social dimensions of urban ecosystem research with leading education researchers, administrators and practitioners, to show how an understanding of urban ecosystems is vital for urban dwellers to grasp the fundamentals of ecological and environmental science, and to understand their own environment. ... Product Description

News headlines are forever reporting diseases that take huge tolls on humans, wildlife, domestic animals, and both cultivated and native plants worldwide. These diseases can also completely transform the ecosystems that feed us and provide us with other critical benefits, from flood control to water purification. And yet diseases sometimes serve to maintain the structure and function of the ecosystems on which humans depend.

Gathering thirteen essays by forty leading experts who convened at the Cary Conference at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in 2005, this book develops an integrated framework for understanding where these diseases come from, what ecological factors influence their impacts, and how they in turn influence ecosystem dynamics. It marks the first comprehensive and in-depth exploration of the rich and complex linkages between ecology and disease, and provides conceptual underpinnings to understand and ameliorate epidemics. It also sheds light on the roles that diseases play in ecosystems, bringing vital new insights to landscape management issues in particular. While the ecological context is a key piece of the puzzle, effective control and understanding of diseases requires the interaction of professionals in medicine, epidemiology, veterinary medicine, forestry, agriculture, and ecology. The essential resource on the subject, Infectious Disease Ecology seeks to bridge these fields with an ecological approach that focuses on systems thinking and complex interactions.

Product Description
Mathematical modeling and computer simulation make it possible to understand and control the dynamic processes taking place in complex systems. Simulation provides insights into the often surprising diversity of possible behaviors, and allows identifying possibilities for intervention and options for alternative development. About one hundred simulation models from all areas of life are fully documented in the three volumes of the 'System Zoo'. They can be quickly implemented and easily operated using freely available system dynamics software. Volume 2 of the System Zoo contains simulation models of the regional water cycle and global carbon cycle, the photosynthesis of vegetation, forest growth, the water, nutrient, and energy dynamics of agriculture, the interaction of plants, animals, and humans with other organisms and resources by predation, harvesting, and competition for nutrients, and through utilization of renewable and exploitation of nonrenewable resources. The System Zoo collection of simulation models is particularly well-suited for teaching, training, and research projects at all levels from high school to university, and for individual study. Volume 1 of the System Zoo contains simulation models of elementary systems, and of systems from the fields of physics and engineering. Volume 3 deals with systems and processes found in economy and society, and with long-term global development. Hartmut Bossel is Professor Emeritus of environmental systems analysis. He taught for many years at the University of California in Santa Barbara and the University of Kassel, Germany, where he was director of the Center for Environmental Systems Research until his retirement. He holds an engineering degree from the Technical University of Darmstadt, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of California at Berkeley. With a background in engineering, systems science, and mathematical modeling, he has led many research projects and future studies in different countries, developing computer simulation models and decision support systems in the areas of energy supply policy, global dynamics, orientation of behavior, agricultural policy, and forest dynamics and management. He has written numerous books on modeling and simulation of dynamic systems, social change and future paths, and has published widely in the scientific literature in several fields. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Oceans by Darlene Stille: vocabulary problems, inaccurate maps
My reading curriculum (I teach 4th grade in Hawaii) required this book for reading. It has 2 maps; both omitted the Hawaiian island chain completely, while including similarly-sized islands such as South Georgia (UK), the Faulkland Islands, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. My students couldn't figure out why we were blitzed off the map. They were confused as to why only sea otters, harbor seals and blue whales were discussed with no mention of the endangered Hawaiian monk seal or the humpback whale, which journeys annually from Alaska to Hawaii. Also, in agreement with the previous review, the term "World Ocean" does not comport with geography lessons in the U.S. for elementary students. Additionally, a strange term was used for jellyfish: "sea jellies." There is no such term in any dictionary, it's not on Wikipedia or anywhere on the internet. When googled, sea jellies give you jellyfish, the proper term.

2-0 out of 5 stars Darlene R. Stille's Ocean
I was hoping to find a good book to learn about ecosystems. I was not happy with the book and I am sending it back. The text was way too big. The pictures were fabulous. The text jumped around quite a bit. I would never present this to a class. I would never have introduced the term "world ocean" to add confusion to what we traditionally call it in American Schools. ... Read more
