The ecosystem concept-the idea that flora and fauna interact with the environment to form an ecological complex-has long been central to the public perception of ecology and to increasing awareness of environmental degradation. In this book an eminent ecologist explains the ecosystem concept, tracing its evolution, describing how numerous American and European researchers contributed to its evolution, and discussing the explosive growth of ecosystem studies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable sourcebook for anyone interested in Ecology
This is a highly readable and engaging account of the rise of one of the dominant "paradigms" in modern ecology. Golley manages to humanize the scientists behind the science while at the same time providing us with extensive footnotes and a really good overview of the theoretical and historical issues involved in the creation of the ecosystem concept. Numerous pictures also help us to visualize the people behind the text and also give us glimpses of the social settings in which some of these ideas developed. While I disagree on theoretical grounds with the widespread use of the term "ecosystem" Golley is to be commended for giving us a remarkably even-handed vision of where it all came from. I use this book extensively with my undergraduate classes in ecology and conservation and it is a real shame that it is out of print. If you see it, grab it. ... Read more

Product Description
Recent scientific literature has raised many concerns about whether fisheries have caused more extensive changes to marine populations and ecosystems than previously realized or predicted. In many cases, stocks have been exploited far beyond management targets, and new analyses indicate that fishing has harmed other species - including marine mammals, seabirds, sea turtles, and sea grasses - either directly through catch or habitat damage, or indirectly through changes in food-web interactions. At the request of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Research Council conducted an independent study to weigh the collective evidence for fishery-induced changes to marine ecosystems and the implications of the findings for U.S. fisheries management. "Dynamic Changes in Marine Ecosystems" provides comprehensive information in regard to these findings. ... Read more

Product Description
Oak Forest Ecosystems focuses on the relationship between an oakforest's acorn yield and species of wildlife that depend on it. It begins by treating factors such asoak distribution, forest fires, tree diseases and pests, dynamics of acorn production, and acorndispersal by birds and mammals. Special consideration is given to the phenomenon ofmasting—whereby oaks in a given area will produce huge crops of acorns at irregular intervals—akey component for wildlife researchers and managers in understanding patterns of scarcity andabundance in the creatures that feed on this crop. Relationships between oaks and animals suchas mice, squirrels, turkeys, deer, and bear are discussed, as are the differences between eastern, southern Appalachian, southwestern, and California oak forests.

Product Description

Breathtaking in scope, this is the first survey of the entire
ecological history of life on land—from the earliest traces
of terrestrial organisms over 400 million years ago to the
beginning of human agriculture. By providing myriad insights
into the unique ecological information contained in the
fossil record, it establishes a new and ambitious basis for
the study of evolutionary paleoecology of land ecosystems.

A joint undertaking of the Evolution of Terrestrial
Ecosystems Consortium at the National Museum of Natural
History, Smithsonian Institution, and twenty-six additional
researchers, this book begins with four chapters that lay out
the theoretical background and methodology of the science of
evolutionary paleoecology. Included are a comprehensive
review of the taphonomy and paleoenvironmental settings of
fossil deposits as well as guidelines for developing
ecological characterizations of extinct organisms and the
communities in which they lived. The remaining three
chapters treat the history of terrestrial ecosystems through
geological time, emphasizing how ecological interactions have
changed, the rate and tempo of ecosystem change, the role of
exogenous "forcing factors" in generating ecological change,
and the effect of ecological factors on the evolution of
biological diversity.

The six principal authors of this volume are all associated
with the Evolution of Terrestrial Ecosystems program at the
National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.

Product Description

5 Easy Pieces features five contributions, originally published in Nature and Science, demonstrating the massive impacts of modern industrial fisheries on marine ecosystems. Initially published over an eight-year period, from 1995 to 2003, these articles illustrate a transition in scientific thought—from the initially-contested realization that the crisis of fisheries and their underlying ocean ecosystems was, in fact, global to its broad acceptance by mainstream scientific and public opinion.

Daniel Pauly, a well-known fisheries expert who was a co-author of all five articles, presents each original article here and surrounds it with a rich array of contemporary comments, many of which led Pauly and his colleagues to further study. In addition, Pauly documents how popular media reported on the articles and their findings. By doing so, he demonstrates how science evolves. In one chapter, for example, the popular media pick up a contribution and use Pauly’s conclusions to contextualize current political disputes; in another, what might be seen as nitpicking by fellow scientists leads Pauly and his colleagues to strengthen their case that commercial fishing is endangering the global marine ecosystem. This structure also allows readers to see how scientists’ interactions with the popular media can shape the reception of their own, sometimes controversial, scientific studies.

In an epilog, Pauly reflects on the ways that scientific consensus emerges from discussions both within and outside the scientific community.

Product Description
The new edition of this widely respected text provides comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the effects of biologicalâ€"physical interactions in the oceans from the microscopic to the global scale.Dynamics of Marine Ecosystems considers the influence of physical forcing on biological processes in a wide range of marine habitats including coastal estuaries, shelf-break fronts, major ocean gyres, coral reefs, coastal upwelling areas, and the equatorial upwelling system.

The third edition of Dynamics of Marine Ecosystems fully considers recent significant developments in this rapidly advancing field.Of particular note is new research suggesting that long-term variability in the global atmospheric circulation affects the circulation of ocean basins, which in turn brings about major changes in fish stocks. This discovery opens up the exciting possibility of being able to predict major changes in global fish stocks.

Written in an accessible, lucid style, Dynamics of Marine Ecosystems is essential reading for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students studying marine ecology and biological oceanography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, Bio-Physical interaction book
I purchased it to accompany a class, called Biological Physical Oceanography. It is a good book to explain physical oceanography in more of a biological context.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book!
This books deals shows some features in oceanic dynamics and ecology in different scales, from millimetres to thousand of kilometres. Maybe not the easiest reading book, because is deep and sound, but it's essential for oceanographers and marine biologists and ecologists, researchers and graduate students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mann & Lazier review
I am a graduate student in oceanography, and I have extensively used Dynamics of Marine Ecosystems by Mann and Lazier to study for exams.Mann & Lazier take the time to explain the concepts of physical oceanography in simple terms and are careful to relate all of the physical processes to biological systems. There is, of course, some math, but advanced calculus is not required. The authors are from Nova Scotia, and my only criticism is that they mostly cite examples from the North Atlantic and neglect other oceans.I have used two companion books with this volume: Introduction to Physical Oceanography by John Knauss, which is more physics and less biology, and Biological Oceanography by Charles Miller, which is more biology and less physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars "BELOW SURFACE CHANGES!"
Are you studying and working in the area of marine ecology and biological oceanography? If you are, this book is for you! Authors K. H. Mann and J. R. N. Lazier, have written an outstanding 3rd edition of a book about the ecology of open-ocean communities.

Mann and Lazier, begin with an overview of marine ecology and how it has come of age. Then, they explore the intimate relationships between the small-scale processes in sea water and the lives of plants and animals. The authors continue by discussing the physical processes that affect the vertical distributions of light, heat, and nutrients, so as to better understand the dynamics of phytoplankton production. In addition, they also discuss the vertical structure in coastal waters--freshwater run-off and tidal mixing. The authors also examine the special places where wind-induced upwelling is the dominant mechanism for bringing new nutrients to the surface. Then, the authors investigate the distinctive physical and biological properties found in each type of coastal waters fronts. Next, they explore some of the interesting consequences of tidally induced water movement. Then, the authors begin to consider the ocean basins in their entirety. Next, they review some of the most exciting developments of the decade (1995-2005). The authors continue by describing the mechanism of global warming and the present-day global carbon cycle. Finally, the authors discuss questions for the future.

This excellent book also includes discussions of the physical-biological interactions and how they provide plausible mechanisms by which the atmospheric changes might be linked to the food webs and the fish-stock changes. Furthermore, the book has clearly met a need and found a very receptive audience, in the authors' review of the developments in marine ecology, as an integrated physical, chemical, and biological discipline.

Product Description

Policy and management decisions are often made on financial grounds. However, the economic value of the benefits that people derive from ecosystems, that is, ecosystem services, may not be fully recognised and hence ecosystem considerations may not be incorporated adequately into decision-making processes. This is particularly true for regulating services, the benefits obtained from the regulation of ecosystem processes, the valuation of which requires an interdisciplinary approach. In essence, valuation is a problem solving strategy and a problem is a problem, it does not respect the boundary of any particular discipline.

The valuation of regulating services is an evolving field of ecological economics. In this book, Dr. Pushpam Kumar and Dr. Michael D. Wood have invited some of the foremost international experts in the field of ecosystem services valuation to contribute chapters on the valuation of regulating services and highlight some of the main obstacles to the implementation and acceptance of these methodologies in the context of decision-making. The contributors explore the theoretical underpinning of valuation of ecosystem services and demonstrate ways in which these theories can be applied to case-specific problems in order to inform decision-making processes.

This collection clarifies some of the doubt and uncertainty regarding the valuation of regulating services. Innovative methodologies in this field have started to emerge and in coming years there may be much further discussion on this topic as methodologies and understanding continue to evolve. This is a highly active area of interdisciplinary research with far reaching social and environmental implications, and this book should be of interest to those who are new to the field, as well as established experts, in moving both theory and practice forward.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you think you can make a difference in protecting our Earth's resources?Take a look at what we might lose!
An ecosystem consists of both living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) systems. For example in "a forest ecosystem, biotic components include everything from microscopic bacteria to delicate mosses to trees that may have first sent roots into the soil more than one hundred years ago."Everything in an ecosystem works together to make it function as a whole and each biotic and abiotic thing has an effect on the entire system. For example, just take a look at the small honeybee and the effect our environment would be without them!Biomes cover broad areas of the earth, say deserts, mountainous areas, the poles or oceans. A biome can be "defined by the type of climate each biome has and the type of plants and animals that live there.

In this book you will be able to take a close look at the interaction of ecosystems and biomes. You will learn about biotic and abiotic interactions (from the microscopic to the community), habitats, niches, ecosystem diversity, photosynthesis, the food chains, food webs, "energy pyramids," the distribution of consumers in the pyramid, the competition for resources, rainforests, predator/prey relationships, relationships between species (mutual and destructive), the water cycle, the carbon cycle, the nitrogen cycle, humanity's place in these cycles, the greenhouse effect, changes in ecosystems (succession), climate change, how biomes are affected by climate and much more.

This is a very thorough, clear, concise interesting book and the writing from one topic to the next is seamless. The print is small and there is a lot of information packed in these pages. There are numerous informative sidebars, photographs and illustrations scattered throughout the book.In the back of the book is an excellent index a glossary, and additional recommended book, film and web site resources.Do you think you can make a difference in protecting our Earth's resources? This is a good place to start reading about what we have to lose if we don't take care of it! ... Product Description
This research level text focuses on the influence of climate variability on the marine ecosystems of the North Atlantic. The ecological impact of climate variability on population dynamics is addressed at the full range of trophic levels, from phytoplankton through zooplankton and fish to marine birds. Climate effects on biodiversity and community structure are also examined. 40 scientists from around the world synthesise what is currently known about how climate affects the ecological systems of the North Atlantic and then place these insights within a broader ecological perspective. Many of the general features of the North Atlantic region are also seen in other marine ecosystems as well as terrestrial and freshwater systems. The final section of the book makes these generalities more explicit, so as to stimulate communication and promote co-operation amongst researchers who may previously have worked in semi-isolation.The book comprises 5 main sections: background (general introduction, atmospheric and ocean climate of the North Atlantic, and modelling methodology), plankton populations (phytoplankton and zooplankton), fish and seabird populations, community ecology (phytoplankton, benthos and fish), and the final section consisting of six commentaries from scientists working in areas outside the North Atlantic marine sector. In order to enhance integration, a series of introductions link chapters and sections. Throughout the book, numerous examples highlight different aspects of ecology-climate interactions. They document recent progress and illustrate the challenges of trying to understand ecological processes and patterns in the light of climate variations. ... Providing a synthesis of basic and applied research, The Everglades, Florida Bay, and Coral Reefs of the Florida Keys: An Ecosystem Sourcebook takes an encyclopedic look at how to study and manage ecosystems connected by surface and subsurface water movements. The book examines the South Florida hydroscape, a series of ecosystems linked by hydrology in a region of intense human development and profound modifications to the natural environment. The book presents scientific studies in the South Florida Hydroscape, discusses policy and management by government and nonprofit groups, and explores how the whole watershed approach must be used to successfully protect coral reefs. The contributions range from the traditional to the controversial, questioning current management schemes and summarizing the results of state-of-the-art research. Billions of dollars, countless man-hours, and innumerable resources have been spent studying the various South Florida ecosystems and how they are linked. The Everglades, Florida Bay, and Coral Reefs of the Florida Keys: An Ecosystem Sourcebook shows you how the principles learned in this region can be applied to other tropical and subtropical hydroscapes. ... Product Description
As part of the Environmental and Ecological Modeling Handbooksseries, the Handbook of Ecosystem Theories and Management provides a comprehensive overview of ecosystem theory and the tools - ecological engineering, ecological modeling, ecotoxicology and ecological economics -to manage these systems. The book is laid out to provide a summary or survey of each topic, using many tables and figures. Concepts, definitions, important findings, basic hypotheses, important correlations between theories and observation with illustrative graphs are included. The comprehensive treatment of ecosystem theory and application of theoretical tools, and the integration of classical theory and real world examples, sets this book apart. Product Description

The fossil record affords a fascinating glimpse at past environments and the kinds of plants and animals that inhabited them. Some sites, for instance, contain nearly complete preserved records of ancient life. Fourteen of these remarkable fossil depositories are found in North America, including Mistaken Point in Newfoundland, Mazon Creek in Illinois, and Rancho La Brea in Los Angeles.
Fossil Ecosystems of North America describes these and eleven other sites that range across the continent.

John R. Nudds and Paul A. Selden introduce each site and place the fossil findings in geologic and evolutionary context. They go on to describe the history of research at each site—the sedimentology, stratigraphy, biota, paleoecology—and offer comparisons to other localities of similar age or environment. Fossil Ecosystems of North America also includes an appendix of museums at which readers can see specimens from the sites and suggestions for visiting the sites in person. In some cases, new specimens can still be collected from these sites by professionals and amateurs alike.

Accessible and informative, this guide to Fossil-Lagerstätten will appeal to expert scientists and adventuresome lay paleontologists alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very nicely done Lagerstatten chronological rundown.
This new release is a very good overview on the fine fossil record of each
age from oldest to youngest. Make no mistake, it has the pictorals of a coffee table book; but packed with information to enlighten the novice and the learned. Having visited most of the localities; I can make the statement that this book does a very good job of representing the locations, the fossils and the known information from studies. Excellent pictures and the quality of the graphics make it the next best thing to holding the very fossils of these famous locations. This book is well worth the price of this hardcopy. Bravo to John Nudds, Paul Seldon and all the contributors, efforts well done. - John A. Spina Jr. in NY

5-0 out of 5 stars Fossil Ecosystems one great concise volume
I had been waiting for this book for a year, but it was worth it. While a better title would probably attract more readers, the book is written with the collector in mind as well as documentation that should be required of undergraduates studying geology and paleontology.
Since we rarely get a glimpse of the extraordinary prehistoric remains (fossils) in museum collections, I appreciate being able to see many via this profusely illustrated work. A wide-range of fossil material is presented, from nearly 2 billion year old microfossils (Gunflint Chert) to the Pleistocene lifeforms in the Rancho La Brea tar deposits in Los Angeles. ... Product Description

Ecosystems and Human Well-Being is the first product of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, a four-year international work program designed to meet the needs of decisionmakers for scientific information on the links between ecosystem change and human well-being. The book offers an overview of the project, describing the conceptual framework that is being used, defining its scope, and providing a baseline of understanding that all participants need to move forward.

The Millennium Assessment focuses on how humans have altered ecosystems, and how changes in ecosystem services have affected human well-being, how ecosystem changes may affect people in future decades, and what types of responses can be adopted at local, national, or global scales to improve ecosystem management and thereby contribute to human well-being and poverty alleviation. The program was launched by United National Secretary-General Kofi Annan in June 2001, and the primary assessment reports will be released by Island Press in 2005.

Leading scientists from more than 100 nations are conducting the assessment, which can aid countries, regions, or companies by:

  • providing a clear, scientific picture of the current state of Earth’s ecosystems at multiple scales
  • deepening our understanding of the relationship and linkages between ecosystems and human well-being, including economic, social and cultural aspirations
  • demonstrating the potential of ecosystems to contribute to poverty reduction and enhanced well-being
  • offering scenarios of our future human and ecological well-being
  • identifying and evaluating policy and management options for sustaining ecosystem services and harmonizing them with human needs

The Millennium Assessment is an invaluable new resource for professionals and policymakers concerned with international development, environmental science, environmental policy, and related fields. It will help both in choosing among existing options and in identifying new approaches for achieving integrated management of land, water, and living resources while strengthening regional, national, and local capacities. It will also improve policy and decisionmaking at all levels through improved collaboration between natural and social scientists, and between scientists and policymakers. Ecosystems and Human Well-Being is an essential introduction to the project. ... Read more
