5-0 out of 5 stars very neat book
I started wondering one day what do animals do in the winter? How does thgis whole cycle continue. Then I got on Amazon, did a search and came up with this book. Its neat!It tells you about different hibernation methods (for example some insects turn their body fluids into a sort of antifreeze!) It also tells about plants and how they cope.Pretty interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thorough Explanation of Winter Adaptations
Thorough and scientific, this a good companion volume to Jim Halfpenny's excellent book on the same subject.Whereas Halfpenny's book is an excellent introduction for students and teachers of ecology, Marchand'sbook goes into more detail on physiological, behavioral, and biochemicaladaptations to winter. It is therefore best suited to biology majors, graduate students, and naturalists with a desire for a complete explanationof how animals and plants adapt and survive in cold weather.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have you ever wondered why insects don't freeze in winter?
A facinating overview of the biology of adaptation to winter. Of interest to students, teachers, and outdoors people who wish to understand interaction between life and the winter environment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for those not familiar with ecology terms
My background is physics and I used this book in my radioecology class.I found it very helpful in looking up ecological terms I'm not familiar with in the books and journals I had to read. The definitions are easy to understand and find.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource for ecology students
My graduate advisor recommended this book and I wish I'd had it sooner. It has been extremely helpful with both my classwork and my thesis. When muttling through scientific literature, this has come in handy for understanding the esoteric vocabulary. It is laid out just like a Webster's dictionary, so terms are easy to find. There are also 28 Appendices with everything from maps of goegraphic regions and biomes to units conversions to abbrevaitons and proof correction marks. It is also good for finding the correct term to describe that concept your professor was discussing in class.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent reference piece
this is an excellent reference piece to any biologist. It has alot of the key words that any biologist who is in the fields of evolution, ecology, systematics, taxonomy to name a few.I myself am a graduate student and a couple of us have it and has become an invaluable piece to our librairies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice dictionary for students majoring biology
I bought the dictionary of first edtion twelve years ago. I found its explanation about ecology, evolution, and systematics is very easily reading and useful to students majoring biology. Product Description
Christianity struggles to show how living on earth matters for living with God. While people of faith increasingly seek practical ways to respond to the environmental crisis, theology has had difficulty contextualizing the crisis and interpreting the responses.

In Ecologies of Grace, Willis Jenkins presents a field-shaping introduction to Christian environmental ethics that offers resources for renewing theology. Observing how religious environmental practices often draw on concepts of grace, Jenkins maps the way Christian environmental strategies draw from traditions of salvation as they engage the problems of environmental ethics. He then uses this new map to explore afresh the ecological dimensions of Christian theology.

Jenkins first shows how Christian ethics uniquely frames environmental issues, and then how those approaches both challenge and reinhabit theological traditions. He identifies three major strategies for making environmental problems intelligible to Christian moral experience. Each one draws on a distinct pattern of grace as it adapts a secular approach to environmental ethics. The strategies of ecojustice, stewardship, and ecological spirituality make environments matter for Christian experience by drawing on patterns of sanctification, redemption, and deification.

He then confronts the problems of each of these strategies through critical reappraisals of Thomas Aquinas, Karl Barth, and Sergei Bulgakov. Each represents a soteriological tradition which Jenkins explores as an ecology of grace, letting environmental questions guide investigation into how nature becomes significant for Christian experience.

By being particularly sensitive to the ways in which environmental problems are made intelligible to Christian moral experience, Jenkins guides his readers toward a fuller understanding of Christianity and ecology. He not only makes sense of the variety of Christian environmental ethics, but by showing how environmental issues come to the heart of Christian experience, prepares fertile ground for theological renewal. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Theological jargon and no content
I put very few books down, and this one was terribly disappointing.Written in thick theological jargon that conveys essentially nothing, the author remained aloof in his abstract theological world for the first seventy pages and tied none of his concerns back to real world science or environmental concerns. If you love the incoherent rambling style of academics where one sophisticated but empty sentence follows the next, then this book is for you.I tried my best but really found nothing substantive to talk about here.Christians should stop being so concerned about finding a legitimate ethic for the environment in their text and simply get on with the business of being ecological concerned. If you want a meaningful issues - deal with the real science and the practical issues facing the world, and leave this "theo-babble" alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars graced by ecologies of grace
This is an excellent new addition to my resources on eco-stewardship. As a clergy member of the Presbyterian church deeply concerned about the moral issue that is our current environmental global reality, I find this book both practical and refreshing. With the eloquance of a gifted writer, and grit of a versed theologian, Dr. Jenkins puts his practical global experience into a very useful framework for us "practioners" of theology and eco-stuff. I appreciate his logical breakdown of the field of eco-ethics into three- ecological spirituality, eco-stewardship, and ecojustice. All these areas are not only hot these days, but of real use for those of us clergy that are desperately seeking ways to link parish work and our heart felt eco-priorities. Kudos to Dr. Jenkins- and may his books keep flowing! I highly recommend this one. - Rev. Rob Mark

5-0 out of 5 stars Systematic Theology and Environmental Philosophy Meet
Willis Jenkins engages Karl Barth, Thomas Aquinas, and Sergei Bulgakov--master theologians from all 3 major branches of Christianity--and puts them in a well-read and -considered dialogue with theories in environmental philosophy and ethics. If you have an interest in ways that serious systematic theology can engage with environmental concerns, this is the book for you. ... This book discusses advanced statistical methods that can be used to analyse ecological data. Most environmental collected data are measured repeatedly over time, or space and this requires the use of GLMM or GAMM methods. The book starts by revising regression, additive modelling, GAM and GLM, and then discusses dealing with spatial or temporal dependencies and nested data. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I'm not an ecologist, but I find this book to be excellent for anyone interested in mixed models.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I found the book awesome. I read it from the first to the last page. It remind me of Crawleys GLIM book, because of its readability being an ecologist. After several tries finally I could enter the world of mixed models and GLMM.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, too many typos
This book is very good in both introducing statistical concepts and describing the R commands to implement those concepts. It is required, however, a relatively deep understanding of Linear Regression. I read this book from A to Z, however, each chapter is as independent as possible, and therefore it is possible to read the individual chapters. I did not try the code on the web page of the book yet, but I did type some of the examples and the code from the book works OK. In addition in the web site there is a set of instructions to install a package with all the code from the examples and updates on the R libraries and packages explained in the book.

Each methodology explained in the book covers step by step both the statistical (and mathematical) details as well as the construction of the R code (including importing the dataset and formating of columns for later analysis).

One of the most important "extra points" in this book is the use of a consistent methodology to approach the problem of modeling ecological data from a statistical point of view.

My only complain is that there are lots (LOTS) of typos, nothing too serious (since I was able to catch them) but still, I'm a little disappointed, because a good reviewer should got those.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book by Zuur and Company
I really enjoyed this group's first book, Analysing Ecological Data, but this book is even better. The second book follows the style and format of the first book in that the authors explain the concepts in non-technical terms, but don't gloss over the important ideas. Moreover, they use real data sets that are quite messy and they show how these data sets can be analyzed through the numerous case studies in the text. All of the case studies are from published ecological papers or PhD theses. What makes this book even better than their first is that R code is included in the text and they carefully show how R can be used to help with the analysis and to construct the elaborate and beautiful graphics displayed in the text.If you're looking to analyze your own ecological data, you must have a copy of this book.It is an invaluable resource both for statistical methodology and for understanding how to use R with statistical models. These guys have done a spectacular job with this book and I look forward to future work from them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice applied text
Many applications in ecology clearly are not amenable to use of the general linear model due to violations of its assumptions. In fact, in most projects I work on, things like correlation among the errors, nonconstant error variance, etc., are the rule, rather than the exception. If you are looking for an applied text dealing with these types of situations with lots of examples, and demonstrations on analysis in R, then you should get this book.It does not delve into theory; there are plenty of other textbooks where you can fill in those details if you are interested.Rather, this book would be ideally suited for quantitative ecologists, biometricians, and statistical consultants who work in life sciences.Another nice thing is that the book does not assume you are an "R expert".Well done. ... The interest in using Bayesian methods in ecology is increasing, however many ecologists have difficulty with conducting the required analyses. McCarthybridges that gap, using a clear and accessible style. The text also incorporates case studies to demonstrate mark-recapture analysis, development of population models and the use of subjective judgement. The advantages of Bayesian methods, are also described here, for example, the incorporation of any relevant prior information and the ability to assess the evidence in favour of competing hypotheses. Free software is available as well as an accompanying web-site containing the data files and WinBUGS codes. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning WinBugs
This book is a great little book for learning some code for programming in WinBUGS.I used it to supplement a course in Bayesian Data Analysis.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good BUGS cookbook
I recently used this book for a class, and found it a good introduction for those already well familiar with classical frequentist techniques in ecology. It provides good cookbook recipes for doing an ANOVA, regression, etc with BUGS. The first chapter also cites some good reasons as to WHY one should use Bayes when they have prior information over other techniques. This was NOT however, a book that was particularly useful for those who want a thorough introduction to Bayes, warts and all, as well as giving one a real thorough understanding of Hierarchical modeling, which is arguably where Bayes can see it's best applications, particularly in ecology. The class as a whole felt like the book needs more thorough examples, more explanations of the WHYs, as well as the potential pitfalls, how to find problems with your models, as well as some applied problem sets. We also used Gelman and Hill's book, which has been excellent as a more thorough introduction, even if it is in the social sciences, and I have high hopes for James Clark's new book, although I have not seen a copy yet. ... Product Description
There are few books available that provide a good introduction to the methods and techniques for ecological research. This book will be invaluable to lecturers teaching field courses and students undertaking project work in ecology.

Each chapter will focus on an ecological technique. It will have an introductory section that describes the ecological principles and theory. This will then be followed by example applications. These will focus on three most common habitats where teachers take students for fieldwork; the seashore, ponds and lakes, fields and woodland.

  • Gives specific worked examples from the main ecosystems used for undergraduate study - seashore, lakes/ponds, field and woodland.
  • Only introductory text specifically focused on field techniques.
  • Great 'how-to' guide that will show student exactly how to carry out each method.
  • Only text to emphasise the principles behind the techniques - taking a methods based approach rather than a taxonomic approach (eg chapters split into population measures, biodiversity measures, species richness measures rather than methods for invertebrates, methods for mammals, methods for birds etc).
  • Greater emphasis on the equipment involved - how to make it, where to buy it.
  • Good references to further reading and advanced techniques.

Product Description

Sacred Ecology examines bodies of knowledge held by indigenous and other rural peoples around the world, and asks how we can learn from this knowledge and ways of knowing. Berkes explores the importance of local and indigenous knowledge as a complement to scientific ecology, and its cultural and political significance for indigenous groups themselves. This second edition is expanded and updated throughout, and places greater emphasis on "knowledge as process". It has two new chapters, Chapter 8 on climate change, demonstrating how indigenous communities "read" environmental signals, and Chapter 9 on how indigenous knowledge deals with complexity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bridge between Worldviews

Over the past couple decades a quiet conceptual revolution has been taking place in various academic outposts around the world. As someone who has been away from academia for more than thirty years, I find this new multi-disciplinary way of thinking about natural resources, complexity, and the human future, to be highly exhilarating--even to the point of generating hope. This new Second Edition of Sacred Ecology brings into focus the author's own lifetime of work while also highlighting that of like-minded colleagues, many of whom Berkes has collaborated with over the years, together turning out dozens ofbooks and learned articles, all in some way concerned with sustainability. To give an idea of the book's scope, here is a list of Berkes' academic interests (found in his curriculum vitae online). All find play in the book:

--Common property resources
--Traditional ecological knowledge
--Co-management
--Community based resource management
--Sustainable development, northern Canada
--Sustainable development, international
--Human ecology and conservation
--Ecology of living resources
--Small scale fisheries
--Resource and environmental policy
--Ecological economics

Many of the points covered in the book are complex (including complexity theory itself), but Berkes avoids the high levels of abstraction and convoluted prose common to academic writing. Here is a quote to give a sense of the book. "Adaptive Management is a good match for traditional ecological knowledge, and a potential bridge between Western and indigenous ways of knowing in the areas of ecology and resource management. It is part of the holistic tradition in Western science, not the mainstream tradition, but significant nonetheless. This holistic tradition includes systems theory, gestalt psychology, quantum physics, and ecology (Capra, 1996). Systems theory is often equated with complex adaptive systems. Fuzzy logic (not mentioned by Capra) may also be added to the list. Many of these holistic sciences are potentially suitable to provide frameworks for integrating Western and indigenous knowledge." (p 269-70).

Sacred Ecology offers a possible way out of the resource pickle we find ourselves in today, by constructing a bridge between our own failed reductuinist paradigm and one that has proven itself over time.

Recent outbreaks of disease in domestic animals, humans and wildlife illustrate the relative importance of infectious diseases and the vulnerability of susceptible animals. Why do such diseases emerge? What are the factors that lead to dramatic epidemics? How can we apply our knowledge to improve the methods of control? These are just some of the questions addressed in this book, which seeks to develop and apply an ecological approach to an understanding of epidemiology in wild animal populations. The development of mathematical models in the dynamics of infectious diseases is a field that has seen rapid growth over the last decade. There is now a need to challenge these models with the data and to bring vets and field workers closer to the disease issues. This book was conceived to identify the exciting questions and set the future research agenda. 50 of the most active workers met in Trento, northern Italy, to brainstorm the issues, and from this the editors have moulded a synthesis that captures the excitement and importance of this expanding field. ... Where terms in this book's 2nd edition appear in the 2nd edition of A DICTIONARY OF EARTH SCIENCES (which came out a year later), the latter is to be preferred.

EARTH SCIENCES provides additional cross-references for various technical terms (e.g. classes of minerals) that the ECOLOGY dictionary doesn't contain. (ECOLOGY rarely seems to contain cross-references that EARTH SCIENCES does not.) Where the definitions are not identical (which is the most common occurrence when the terms appear in both books), the differences lie in the clarification of examples, the provision of additional details, rearrangement of the order of the information for greater clarity, and (where the word is used differently for non-ecological disciplines) the provision of additional alternate meanings.

In other words, Allaby incorporated the work done on this book into the DICTIONARY OF EARTH SCIENCES, and he and his co-editor on that book continued cleaning up and improving any terms used in common by the two books, taking care not to introduce silly inconsistencies.

When found in both sources, only one word out of a quasi-random selection of forty didn't match *any* of the senses listed in the DICTIONARY OF EARTH SCIENCES. However, out of 75 quasi-random terms in the DICTIONARY OF ECOLOGY, 35 weren't in the DICTIONARY OF EARTH SCIENCES, so unfortunately the DICTIONARY OF ECOLOGY can't be treated as a simple subset of the larger work.

Not surprisingly, the terms found in the ECOLOGY dictionary that aren't in the EARTH SCIENCES dictionary tend to be the more 'biological' terms, e.g. "saltatory" ('leaping movement, as of crickets or grasshoppers). ... Read more

Product Description

The main question of our age is how we live our lives. As we struggle with this question, we face others. How do we handle ideas and knowledge, both our own and those of others? What relationship to ideas do we want? Whose ideas do we want to be surrounded by? Where do we want to think? Most choose, or have the choice made for them, according to what family, colleagues, and friends do and say and what we read about, and a more or less rational calculation of the odds.

Modern ecology results from the shift in thinking generated by quantum physics and systems theory, from the old view based on reductionism, mechanics, and fixed quantities to a new view based on holistic systems where qualities are contingent on the observer and on each other. This perception changes how people treat ideas and facts, certainties and uncertainties, and affects both art and science. Worldwide it is part of the process of understanding the current crisis in the environment, and the balance of economy, creativity, and control required in our response.

The book’s starting point is the growing role that information has played in industrial economies since the 1800s and especially in the last thirty years. It is an attempt to identify ecology of thinking and learning. It is also based on the need to escape from old, industrial ways and become more attuned to how people actually borrow, develop, and share ideas. Throughout the book, Howkins asks questions and offers signposts. He gives no guarantee that creative ecologies will be sustainable, but shows what should be aimed for.

Product Description
"I would strongly recommend it for library purchase and the reading list of advanced students in this field."
Microbiology Today, May 2009

Nearly a decade since its landmark publication, this book has been thoroughly revised in this valuable new edition

Like the successful first edition, Microbial Ecology of the Oceans, Second Edition is unique and fills a void in the rapidly growing fields of marine microbiology, microbial ecology, and microbial oceanography. Here, a carefully selected team of international experts explores issues of enduring importance to microbial ecologists, including:

  • Genomes and metagenomes of marine microbes
  • Microbial evolution, as revealed by molecular techniques
  • Microbes in carbon budgets and cycles
  • Viruses and grazers of bacteria
  • Microbes and N cycle reactions in sediments
  • The role of microbes in food web dynamics
  • Biogeochemical cycles in the ocean

In addition to drawing on the long history of microbiology, the contributors also include discussions of the latest advances in biological and chemical oceanography to examine the role of microbes and viruses in the oceans.

Richly illustrated with black-and-white photographs and drawings, and complemented with a comprehensive list of additional reading for each chapter, this important new edition provides readers with current information in the fields of marine microbiology and microbial ecology. It is designed for students and researchers in biological and chemical oceanography, geochemistry, marine chemistry, freshwater ecology, and general microbiology. 5-0 out of 5 stars Microbial ROCKS!!
It is very detailed but not hard to read. If you want to know how microbial rocks the world, do not miss this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This book presents most "hot" topics in today's marine microbiology. Background, current research and future directions for each area are described by top scientists.
Easy to read and understand; clear graphs and figures; lots of references.
I am a Ph.D. student in marine science and find that book very useful. It's a summary and review of what every student should know about marine microbiology. It's a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, well-integrated book
"An excellent, well-integrated book that ranges from marine viruses to filamentous cyanophyceans and treats the processes mediated by them. The aerobic heterotrophic bateria in the open ocean and the biogeochemcial role of the assemblages are emphasized in most of the 16 chapters. The authors, none of them a 'pure' microbiologist but all attuned to biogeochemical questions, provide modern reviews of the basics, but ample space is given to open issues. About two-thirds of the very many references date from 1990 to 1999." --Karl Banse, University of Washington

5-0 out of 5 stars Expert Review
"Microbial Ecology of the Oceans" presents timely and up-to-date reviews of various aspects of microbial ecology of the marine water column....Well-written and authoritative chapters should make it useful asa text for advanced courses and for graduate students. Altogether, I canwarmly recommend it to anyone interested in microbial ecology andbiological oceanography."
