Not good
I recently read Jill Shalvis's "Get a Clue" which was very good.In "Her Sexiest Mistake" none of the characters, with the exception of Hope, were very sympathetic.
Mia Appleby grew up in a raggedy mobile home with a sister and mother whose main goal was getting a man to take care of them.Mia escaped from Tennessee to L.A., went to college and became a very successful ad exec. She has an expensive car, hired a decorator for her lavish house and wears nothing but designer clothes. This is a woman who wears high heeled mules when she gets out of the shower!
Kevin is her new neighbor. To Mia, with his motorcycle and laid back appearance he's the typical "bad boy".In reality, he's a science teacher who runs a teen center. He's a caring man who feels it's his resiblity to try to "fix" other peoples lives, in a good way, especially his brother Mike.
Mike was beaten by Kevin's stepfather when Mike was a toddler and Kevin was five and as a result is now deaf.Mike uses Kevin's guilt to get anything he wants. He lives with Kevin, takes his money, doesn't work, is always getting drunk, goes through women like Kleenex, and Kevin has had to bail him out of jail.
Hope is Mia's 16 year old niece, whom Mia has never even tried to see.Hope does what Mia did.She escapes from Tennessee to L.A. and goes to her idol Aunt "Apple's" house.
Mia is frantic to get rid of Hope and makes it clear to Hope, repeatedly, that she is not welcome there. She doesn't want anyone to know she even has a niece since she won't talk about her past at all.Mia is all about status. She's self involved, shallow, self righteous and has no empathy for anyone but herself. When Hope shows up after driving across country in a beat up car, Mia's main concern is that Hope's putting scuff marks on her precious floor! And somehow, even though she feels she comes from "trailer trash", she's a first class snob.
The night before Hope showed up Mia spent the night at Kevin's house, in his bed.But she doesn't want any relationship with him.Maybe she should have thought about that before she "did" her neighbor. In spite of this she keeps showing up at his house for sex."Let me in so you can do me."Sometimes she doesn't get further than inside the door and is all over him.As soon as they're finished she gets up, gets dressed and walks out.She is a complete user, doesn't care about the effects her behavior has on anyone else and at times is downright cruel.
In all fairness though Kevin lets her, and Mike, get away with using him no matter how badly it hurts him.I'm not sure why he even wants her as there doesn't seem to be any attraction other than physical.Mia's type of behavior is no more acceptable with a woman than it is with a man.
Midway through the book I didn't care what happened to any of them.
From a trailer park to the LA Hills
Mia Appleby has shunned her humble beginnings and has transformed herself from a Tennessee trailer park to a near mansion in the LA hills. She is a shark of an ad exec and exhibits the same behavior in the bedroom - she has never met a man she wants to bed more than once. And then she sleeps with neighbor Kevin... Her orderly world is thrown into chaos as she finds herself wanting more than a night with Kevin, but not able to make any promises beyond that. Further adding a kink to her armor is the arrival of her niece Hope, a surly Goth teen who reminds Mia of herself.
Kevin is a sexy Harley-riding high school science teacher. He supports his ne'er do well half-brother Michael who has permanent hearing loss as a result of a beating buy his father. He knows that in order for Michael to spread his wings he needs to let him fend for himself, but guilt traps him in the never-ending cycle. Kevin in intrigued by Mia, who he thinks is shallow, and finds that all she seems to want from him is nightly stud service. He is amazed that Hope and Mia have never met in person. In a switch from most romance plots, it is the gal with the commitment issues instead of the guy, who is the nurturing one.
As Mia discovers that her sister Sugar is looking for a vacation from parenthood and has no intention of coming to get her daughter, Mia leans on Kevin more and more to help her cope with a role she was not cut out for. Can Hope and Kevin break down the walls that Mia has erected before it's too late?
This is my first Shalvis book and won't be the last. From the witty repartee and sensuality between Mia and Kevin to the dialog via sign language between Kevin and Michael, the story is engaging.
A Sexy Read Indeed
This book was very fast-paced, sexy, and fun. The book is a romance, and the main characters are well-rounded and interesting. Mia Appleby is a tough as nails woman with a shameful past, and Kevin McKnight is her sexy neighbor - a man who teachers troubled youth during the day and rides his motorbike at night. In a romantic twist, the female (Mia) is the one who is reluctant to love; while Kevin wears his heart on his sleeve for Mia, she remains dispassionate towards him - despite enjoying his body nightly. The chemistry between the Mia and Kevin is HOT and even the introduction of a teenager into their lives doesn't dampen their love life. This book will make you a happy reader for a few hours.
Great hot read
Jill Shalvis is one of the best authors of contempory romances. Her Sexiest Mistake is hot and a great read. Mia is a single girl with a great job and turning her life around since coming from living in a trailer park. She shares an incredible night with Kevin the next door neighbor and wants no strings attached, but Kevin the biker hottie wants more. The books shows how a man like Kevin can turn an independent, strong woman like Mia to change her views. Get the book.
I didn't make a mistake by reading this...
I've read Blue Flame and Seeing Red by Jill Shalvis and enjoyed them so much I had to pick this one up and was not disappointed.
I enjoyed all the characters, especially the main characters Mia and Kevin, and their relatives, niece Hope, and Kevin's brother, Mike.
Mia is self-centered, embarassed of her white-trash upbringing, and very sucessful in advertising. She's also addicted to sex, the kind that comes with no strings attached. She doesn't want to be anything like her trashy mother nd sister, yet like them she can't say no to sex. You can move the trash out the trailer, but not the trashy way from the girl, apparently.
Kevin is a science teacher in summer school, who also runs a teen center. He feels guilt over not protecting his brother from an abusive father when they were younger, leading to Mike being deaf. I enjoyed the sign languaging between them, by the way. He also seems to have a habit of trying to fix everyone and everything as a way of redemption of allowing such fate upon his kid brother. But he learns with Mia that you can't fix everyone.
Kevin moves into Mia's neighborhood in the sunny town of LA, and she into his bed within the first week of them meeting. She comes over and borrows sex from him instead of sugar or milk like some neighbors do, lol, and he can't seem to say no to her, even when he claims the next time he will.
Kevin wants more from Mia besides sex, but Mia's not used to having seconds with any man, so why can't she stay away from Kevin?
Enter Hope, her niece from a town she wants to forget she ever lived and her life's one big mess, or is it?
Read and find out. Watching Mike mature before my eyes was an added bonus, and Mia finally facing her past and a niece she never had contact with before was enjoyable. I couldn't put this book down.
This is the third book by Miss Shalvis I've enjoyed and if she keeps up this great writing, won't be my last.
