Eclipse: Cyberpunk Classic

FANTASTIC CYBERPUNK
Shirley hits the ground running on this 1st novel of the series.You have great action, good plot, and some nice twist- all set in a future that looks scary close to the present world what more could you ask for!?! Love all the little details that make up the future - the desolve depression which has recently whipped out key banking info from a EMP burst causing a run on banks and ruining the American economy, to the worship of the Grid (internet), the rise of a new militant Russia who has started conventional warfare to solve its resource issue, and throw into that a new nationalist/fascist movement that is way more powerful than anyone realizes and you have the makings for a great series. Since I am waiting on the 2nd and 3rd book I have no idea if Shirley will carry this thru but all seems to start GREAT!Few critiques- where is China?!?With all heck breaking lose you think a superpower like China would be more involved- maybe he will touch on this in future books or I missed the explanation in this book?Shirley tends to almost write in "cliffnote" fashion giving you just enough brushed in character information to briefly understand many different people in his stories. Sometimes it works sometimes you have to remember who this character is and what their motivations are.But these are minor issues- get these books and have a BLAST!Also check out some of the other Shirley books- his Horror stuff is almost as good :)

Dated but enjoyable.
I've not got the patience to write a long, coherent review, so I will state only that fond readers of cyberpunk will enjoy -Eclipse-.Although the World War III setting makes -Eclipse- seem very dated (as speculative fiction, this book fails completely), the story is always exciting and very enjoyable.Worth spending an afternoon reading, if only as a light amusement.

Gripping possible future novel
After discovering John Shirley through his short horror fiction, I bought a copy of Eclipse and sat motionless for days to read it.In other words, I could not put it down.While this would be shelved in a store's science fiction section, it really is more than typical spaceships and lasergun fare.It falls more towards cyberpunk but exceeds it with a focus on characters instead of technology.

The basic premise of the rise of a neo-fascist "security" corporation during the starts of a limited nuclear war between the USA and Russia sets the background for the very believable characters, each with distinct personalities and flaws that come to life from the printed page.Mr. Shirley weaves a complex and intertwined tale of guerilla mercenaries, fading rock stars, and fasicst powermongers that would stand proudly with the great works on science fiction.If not for any other reason, his interpretation of developing cultural trends is at the same time illuminating and frightening.

Having only read the first book*, I am anticipating no less enjoyment from Penumbra and Corona, the second and third works in the series.

I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a complicated read where each page yields a small reward.

* Sometimes I do need to spend a little time reading my college textbooks, too.

Shocking, intense, visionary: a work of genius
World War III started but no one used the big nukes. While the USA and the New Soviets agreed to fight on European battlegrounds (and on a space station halfway between Earth and Moon), fascist fundamentalist Christian forces - under the name Second Alliance - are gaining in influence worldwide. Only the New Resistance sees the destructive power of the Fascists and starts a bitter and seemingly hopeless fight.
As this is only the first part of the recently reissued trilogy, I don't know yet the outcome of the War, but one thing is for sure: John Shirley wrote one of the most intense future histories I have ever come across. The plot is based in the year 2029, and as this is a revised edition (the original version was released about 15 years ago), a lot of the historical background is real and does not only paint an imaginative dark future, but also shows the frightening doings of some actual American congressmen (Trent Lott and the racist Council of Conservative Citizens).
Shirley apparently has a strong dislike for WASPs (understandably), and together with the malleability of people's minds, he paints us a visionary picture of the future that could happen only just too easily.
Very graphic violence (nothing for the faint hearted), strong language and a shockingly surreal glimpse into the future will make sure that this book will have an everlasting imprint to your neurons.
Only one small point of criticism: for a "revised and updated" version, there were awfully many typos and especially misplaced periods and commas, but that doesn't take away one ounce of the intensity of this groundbreaking novel. ... Read more

Good book for those use to simpler editors
I was use to using a much simpler editor for writing Java code.This book did a very good job helping with learning how to use Eclipse.

too much padding
The book has some useful information, but does not
go beyond the very basic.In light of this, it is
annoying that so much space is taken up with repeated
samples of the same code, and with more screen shots
than are needed.I've encountered this before in one
of Mr. Holzner's books (XML Complete), and I have to
wonder if this is done to pad the book to a length
that justifies the cost.

Handy Starters' Reference to Eclipse
After getting used to the fundamentals of the Java programming language, a versatile integrated development environment like Eclipse would bring developers to next level of productivity, and Eclipse Cookbook is handy for the start.Readers are guided step-by-step with numerous illustrations about its support for tasks from creating packages, classes, methods to refactoring, and debugging.The book demonstrates Eclipse 2.1.2 with the difference of early release of version 3.0 being mentioned.Now when versions 3.0.1 and 3.1M are readily available, you might need to resort to online help for the exact updated steps.You will find the use of application programming interface of platform dependent SWT for building GUI with both AWT and Swing being mixed.However, it gets nothing to do with the drag-and-drop style of building graphical components.Web development is included but too concise.No elaborated features like performance profiling or modeling tool of round-trip development are described.Perhaps it would be more appropriate to introduce to target audience with various commonly referred plug-ins on tasks like integrating with different kinds of version control, validating XML, modeling UML, and J2EE support.

Somewhat basic for a cookbook...
A recent addition to my Eclipse library has been Eclipse Cookbook by Steve Holzner (O'Reilly).It works well for my level of expertise at the package, but experienced users might find it lacking...

Overall, the book will benefit new and intermediate users.The author covers quite a few of the features of Eclipse that make it so powerful, like refactoring, running the debugger, and other various tasks.You may know that these exist but not know how to use them, or you just may be ignorant of the fact that they even exist.In that sense, it's really good.The SWT portion seems to be more centered on programming with Eclipse as a secondary focus.Maybe because it's because I don't do SWT development, but it just seemed to be a bit out of place.The material also seems to be pretty basic for a cookbook.Usually the recipes are more beyond the basics and get into things that aren't quite as intuitive as they might be.

This will help me get up to speed on Eclipse, and I do like the book.I'm just not sure it's for everyone...

Very good reference for Eclipse.

Prof. Steve Holzner is an authority in Java and has many books to his credit. Prof. Holzner's

expertise and patience is well brought in this book with adequate explanation of the different aspects

of Eclipse.

The book is full of screen prints that adequately explain how the screen would look while using the

built-in features of eclipse.the author has taken the time to take different scenarios and ways to

work around the different problems encountered while using the tool to develop Java applications.to

demonstrate some of the features, the author debugs a sample program and identifies the errors

commonly encountered and ways to resolve the errors.

as mentioned at the beginning book, this book does not intend to teach programming aspects of Java but

the features and the nuances built in the tool. The author has taken the time to explain how the

toolintegrates with ANT and TOMCAT.

although this book was written with Eclipse 2.x, the author indicates the features that would be built

in eclipse 3.x.the author's style is simple and straight to the point.it is a well written book

"Things that are interesting, interest me" - Henrietta Crosby
I am not sure how I feel about this account of a sure to have been forgotten soul if not for minor mention in Malcolm Cowley's Exiles Return...and in the very well done Biography by Geoffrey Wolff, which I am much late to read after being directed by the Boston Globe to take a look some Sundays ago.

All in all the interesting part of this story is in the tortured soul of a young man who seems to have lost his way to conventional wisdom, but in reality may have been in direct line with his destiny.His persistent commitment to living every day to the fullest, loving and learning through excess with the knowledge of zero accountability given his imminent death at his own hand is captivating to those who could not possibly live this type of life. Scandalous for the time or any time.

Well done Mr. Wolff, my apologies for the late to the party read.

Impressive Biography, Unimpressive Man
Perhaps were I around in the 1920's, I would have come under Harry Crosby's spell and considered him an amazing man.Reading this, however, brings one to opposite conclusions.If anything, he comes across as spoiled, petulant, untalented, and psychotic.I fear that this may sway many reviewers' opinion of the book, but I separate biography from subject here and credit Wolff with writing a thorough and satisfying life.If you have any interest in Paris in the 1920's, the Lost Generation, and cameos by a whole raft of interesting players (Archibald MacLeish, Ernest Hemingway, Kay Boyle, etc.), this is worth a go.One thing's for sure: it not only ends, but begins, with a bang.

Interesting For Wolfe or Paris Fans
Geoffrey Wolff is among the most underappreciated novelists writing in English. His biography of his father The Duke of Deception is enthralling. This early biography is not quite up to these standards, is too opiniated, and could used some editing. Nonetheless it shows his flair. It is also full of references to Paris and the famous expatriates of the 20s. Be careful to get a copy without a crumpled back page.

A Mind Crushed By His War Experiences
No one thus far seems to recognize the obvious fact that Harry Crosby is a classic example of post-traumatic stress syndrome. He volunteered as an ambulance driver in World War I, and that harrowing experience smashed his mind, as similar experiences have mentally crushed so many other brave people who volunteered for war duty instead of staying complacently at home.

Harry's life after the war is thus not a merely decadent and self-indulgent romp, but an ongoing struggle to regain some kind of mental equilibrium after seeing hundreds of men turned into slabs of bleeding meat in a gigantic and futile butchery. At one point a shell struck his ambulance and blew it apart. It's almost imporrible to survive that kind of experience without serious mental damage.

The attitude of the author is judgemental in a naive, Midwestern way to the point of unintentional hilarity. The endless gasps of shock from the naive and outraged author are better than Saturday Night Live. Gasp! Harry actually dares to wear a black flower to his father's dinner party! Great heavens, what would Aunt Gertrude think? Shocked! I'm so terribly shocked! I do believe that I'm going to faint!

On and on it goes, and I'm amazed that the naive author, or should say the faux-naive author, survives the hypocrisy of his endless denunciations of the roaring 1920's and those who roared while the roaring was good.

So the author wouldn't have written about Harry Crosby unless he had the suicide at the end? Suppose that Harry had survived into a pleasant and prosperous old age? That no doubt would have been intolerable to our censorious author, who is determined to rewrite the Portrait of Dorian Gray, but unhappily without Oscar Wilde's genius.

It's a real shame that this seems to be the only extensive biography of Harry Crosby. It's a guilty pleasure to read this endless pseudo-moralistic trashing of Harry's interesting life. If the smugly righteous author had suffered through the same kinds of wartime horrors that Harry endured, the silly bloke would have been institutionalized for the rest of his life, and we wouldn't be victimized by this hymn of hate toward a man whom the author so transparently envies. A tame lap dog is writing the biography of a lone wolf, and it just doesn't click.

Boring Son
Are there no more editors?This book is repetitive, much too long, and the organization is confusing.I am never convinced Harry Crosby is worth the time to read his story.As I read, I kept thinking, "Why bother?"Harry's life might be interesting as an example of supreme self-indulgence and self-absorption, but his writing (as quoted) is atrocious!Tighten it up, tell me more about Black Sun Press and some good writers, and less about Harry's decadence-unless you can make it more interesting than this! ... If only you could walk into the book.I absolutely loved it. I have never read one of Allie Mackay's books that I didn't like though.

Great ghostly romance!!!!! 4.5 stars
This is the fourth book in Allie Mackay's wonderful Highland Ghost series and for those of you that have enjoyed the series so far this is one that we have all been waiting for this is Bran of Barra's story! (For those of you that have not read this series before it would make a great stand alone and I think will have you rushing out to get the others as well!)

Mindy Menlove lives in an authentic Highland Castle that was transported stone by stone to the US and reassembled in modern day Pennsylvania by her late fiancé Hunter MacNeil. When he met an untimely but very deserved death (he was a cheating scoundrel) the castle was willed to Mindy. And while this would be a dream for most breathing females Mindy is not at all in love with the Highland castle and its dark and broody atmosphere in fact she is done with all things Scottish after Hunter's betrayal. She wants nothing more than to sell the castle and to head for the beaches of sunny Hawaii to sip fruity drinks and enjoy the good life as far from the memories of castles and MacNeil's as possible. But it seems that a host of very Scottish ghosts that reside in the castle have much different plans in store for Mindy they intend to see their beloved ancestral home back on Hebridian soil once more... and they will stop at nothing to make sure that it does!

Bran of Barra is a MacNeil through and through too the very marrow of his bones. This proud and braw 700 year old Highland chieftain has enjoyed his life and his afterlife to the very hilt! Everyone in ghostdom knows of Bran and his Island Castle of delights where food and drink flow unceasingly and women are warm and always willing. He has been entertaining and rollicking at his beloved Tower for centuries with a host of ghostly revelers coming and going on a regular basis. Aye he has lived the high afterlife as it were undisturbed for centuries... but all of that is about to change. Bran has his world turned upside down when a feisty American lass enters his realm claiming that she has come to restore is castle back to its original state and place on the Isle of Barra. Bran has long said that he wants nothing to do with the modern world or the modern American women like several of his ghostly friends have recently fallen blissfully in love with. But from the moment he sees Mindy he knows that fate as well as the fabled Heartbreaker sword at his side have other plans for him and this 21st century lady.

Though Mindy has sworn she will not let the handsome highlander and his homeland anywhere near her heart she has a hard time living up to that vow when every moment that she spends on Scottish soil and close to Bran makes she and her heart burn with passion and could it be something more? And can this centuries old rogue truly reform his philandering ways and find happiness at last?

This was a great read I have wanted to read more about Bran from his appearance in Allie's very first book Highlander in her Bed. He and Mindy couldn't be more different in every conceivable way but they are perfect together and I loved watching this very determined NON-Scotophil being converted every step of the way! And I especially enjoyed seeing many of the characters from the previous stories making guest appearances and we get to meet a group of many brand new characters that I certainly hope to see again and learn more about!

Most of you know that Allie Mackay is really Sue Ellen Welfonder I didn't until way after I had read her first book but if you love Sue Ellen's books you should definitely give her alter ego here a try. And ANY true paranormal fan would love this series especially if you are a die hard Scottish fan like me! :) If you want a fun and passionate ghost love story look no further than Allie Mackay!

I gave it 4.5 stars!

Not as good as the previous tales.
I found this book to be irritating.
I enjoyed Ms. Mackay's other offerings and looked forward to this next chapter.
The characters seemed utterly one-dimensional, the storyline a bit vague, and it made a trip to Scotland seem trite and unenjoyable.
And yes, I have visited there before.
I almost didn't finish reading it and I doubt I will buy her next book.

Contributing to Eclipse: Principles, Patterns, and Plug-Ins is therefore significantly more than a book about how to write plug-ins for the Eclipse framework. The book--by software patterns guru Erich Gamma and "extreme programming" exponent Kent Beck--explains how new Eclipse modules should interact with existing software elements, and make themselves further extensible. It also emphasizes the importance of packaging new plug-ins and making them available to others as new Eclipse features. The book's emphasis is on community, and helping the Eclipse project grow and improve.

That said, this book is an excellent how-to guide. Must Have
If you are looking into Eclipse plugins programming, this is the book. It not only teaches you the basics but also guides you to the best pratices on Eclipse development, with test driven philosophy. Needless to say, it also covers design patterns used by Eclipse.

Hands on tour through Eclipse 2!!! Plugin Development
This book takes you through a tour on plugin development. The main disadvantage of this book is that it is for Version 2 and not Version 3 of Eclipse. Yes you can somehow manage to translate and find your way around. Anyhow this is quite annoying not always successful and maybe one wants to learn more about the special advertised feature of Eclipse 3: rich client platforms. A topic inherently connected to plugin development. Please give us a new version of this book.

What I would expect if there was NO docs for eclipse
I don't like this book as a book on writing plugins for eclipse for the following reasons:

1) This book's 'exploratory' approach tries to show you how to search (the hack approach) through the installed plugins for excerpts that you can copy/paste/edit. It would have been more useful if the authors used a 'tutorial' approach that constrains the example to documented basics (many different examples that then integrate/or not).

2) As expected (and tiring if you have other book from these authors), JUnit integration is the example developed throughout the book. This may satisfy the need for some types of plugins (code oriented plugins), but leaves much to be desired if you want to develop other kinds of tools.

3) The samples are outdated in 3.0, and the main example won't work/run in 3.0 (even if you download their project source). If you try to follow along, you will quickly be disapointed once you run into that snag. I am sure that under 2.x it works great.

4) This book is useful as a way of seeing a small example built up. However, because of #3, this all becomes useless once the plugin doesn't 'work'.

As with most books that cook a long example as a way of teaching, rather than as a way to support other knowledge, much of the time is spent on explaining how to cook things for the example. For me this doesn't work, as I want something focused that instructs me, rather than a evolving code-walkthrough of a particular example. To me this is boring, and has no use after the initial read.

This book would be great if it was 1/2 as long, and focused on the patterns for the plugins instead, not presume to be an intro to plugin development.

Different is good
"Contributing to Eclipse" is a great read. More importantly, as someone who is in the middle of their first major Eclipse plugin development project, I learned a lot -- even though I've previously read every other available book on the topic. Gamma and Beck take you through the development of a fairly sophisticated plugin, step by step.Perhaps most welcome, the plugin they develop isn't a syntax-highlighting text editor (an example that's already been done to death,) but a set of tools for running JUnit tests on Java code!

This is the only book I've seen that discusses testing and Test-Driven Development of plugins, a must for serious plugin developers.As you'd expect from the developers of JUnit, they use JUnit to test every piece of functionality they add.Surprisingly, even though you'd expect some confusing in writing about using JUnit to test a JUnit plugin, there's none. Gamma and Beck are both excellent writers, and they know this subject matter inside out.

A word of warning: this is neither an introduction to nor a reference for Eclipse plugin programming. I don't think I would have gotten nearly as much from this book if I hadn't read "Eclipse in Action" and "The Java Programmer's Guide to Eclipse" first. But if you've gotten beyond the novice level with Eclipse, I guarantee you'll learn something by reading this book.

Zen and the Art of Eclipse
Once you get past the interesting writing style, this is a pretty cool book written by two of the giants in the industry. This is a particularly good book, if you are interested in Eclipse plugin development and JUnit testing. The tutorial is pretty comprehensive and the book example evolves in a natural way. The only downside is that this book is targeted at Eclipse 2.1 rather than 3.0 (which is no wonder given that it predates 3.0 by more than six months). This doesn't really detract from the book because most of the examples are fairly generic and can be made to run in Eclipse 3.0 with minimal effort. ... Read more

Blood Eclipse
The lines were drawn long ago - pure blood vampire Carden Adair on one side and made vampire Blane, as well as the vampires he's sired, on the other side.At the moment Carden answers to Blane although cracks are beginning to show.

Best book for Java developers learning Eclipse
I found this book a pretty good intro for a Java Developer/Architect who knew Borland JBuilder and Ant very well but who "just didn't get it" in terms of Views / Perspectives in Eclipse etc.
This book was a good tutorial / introduction to the various features in Eclipse and how to us it (focuses on the 20% of those features you will use 80% of the time). I found Eclipse 3.1.2 was a bit different than the version he used and with Eclipse 3.2 now out (Q2 2006) I'm sure a few more changes have occurred but the exposition style is good and gets to the point.
Although I think it is the best book for the purpose, I think those who want to learn and use the Eclipse Java IDE don't have much in the way of quality choices to learn it in terms of books at least.

Field guide to Eclipse 3.0
The value in this book is it's breadth of coverage. It never digs very deep into topics.The coverage of UML editing, for example, is about 30 pages. But that's thirty more pages than most of the Eclipse books have on UML. And the coverage is of a wide variety of these topics, including Struts, web services, JSPs, and others. The basics are covered as well, starting with installation and the basics of starting up a project, going through source control, unit testing, and refactoring. It's all there. It's just set to a whirlwind pace that may leave you a little breathless. Good book, just not for very beginners.

The latest Eclipse is well described here by Valcarcel. It has rapidly become perhaps the most popular IDE for Java programmers. Of course, being free didn't hurt the uptake.

He assumes you have already programmed in Java itself. The book has three parts and an Appendix. The first part covers the basics. Essentially, it shows how to write and debug a standalone Java application in Eclipse. Competently done. But frankly, little to distinguish from other Eclipse texts. At this level, we are basically in an IDE equivalent to IBM's earlier Visual Age for Java, circa 2000. From which Eclipse is derived, by the way.

The second and third parts of the book are far more interesting. Part two is all about using plug-ins to build up an application. Here is where Eclipse really shows its power. Also, the author describes how to make a Web Service using Eclipse. Web Services are a hot topic, and for those of you wanting to get into it, without giving up your familiar Eclipse environment, that chapter may justify the entire book.

Finally, part 3 is about the basics of writing a plug-in. You can really dig deep into the Eclipse framework for this. It may be the most advanced part of the book. ... Read more

Géza Gárdonyi set his great Hungarian children's classic in the 16th century during the 150-year Ottoman occupation. Besides the tales of several battles, the novel details the extraordinary 1552 Siege of Eger, during which Captain István Dobó's 2,000 Hungarian men, women and children inside the county's castle, defeated a Turkish force of 80,000 men. The Magyar title, Egri csillagok (literally, "Stars of Eger"), is required reading in Hungarian schools, but the book provides fantastic history, entertainment and romance for kids (and grown ups) of all nationalities.

The novel excludes much sad history that followed---Eger's 91-year era as the seat of a brutal Turkish vilayet (administrative region) starting in 1596, when a still larger Ottoman army defeated the Magyar forces. (Charles of Lorraine's Christian army liberated Eger only in 1687, a year after the Hapsburgs retook the Buda's west bank Danube castle, which was unified into Budapest in 1873.)

But the novel fulfills the young reader's longing for a great plot and adventure, as told through the story of the peasant Gergely and his childhood friend and later sweetheart, Eva, whose parents push for her marriage to a nobleman.

Travelers also reap rewards from this novel, which details daily life in 16th century Heves (pronounced He-vesh) county, east of the Mátra Mountains at the northern edge of Hungary's great Plain. This is wonderful reading, and highly recommended.

I absolutely LOVED this book!My husband has read it, my mother, and we also have had some friends read it now.This book is well written giving a wonderful story along with the colorful history of the time and people who lived there.It reads like a movie, but stays with you like a real life fairytale.Can't wait to read it again.

This novel has it all - history, romance, deeds of daring, and dastardly villains.This is definitely one of my all-time favorites - this is the sort of book you'll want to re-read over and over again. It covers the period when the Turks were running rampant in Hungary, which is seldom described in English-language history books, so the setting itself is exotic for that very reason; an American reader will be biting his/her nails till the last page to see how it all turns out. neglected, yet vitally important teaching
"Grace In Eclipse" is a study on eternal rewards and is the 2nd segment in a three-part series on the absolute freeness of the gift of salvation.

The author argues that passages dealing with eternal rewards(for one's works) are often misinterpreted as being passages dealing withsalvation (a free gift.)In order to understand the freeness of oursalvation, the often neglected, yet vitally important concept of eternalrewards must be correctly taught to the believer.This issue along withthe issue of mistaking discipleship passages (works) for salvation (freegift) passages - discussed in "Absolutely Free" by the sameauthor - make up the great bulk of misunderstood scripture which leads manyto combine both concepts into a single doctrine of salvation and ending upwith a (disguised) "works salvation."

Hodges also maintainsthat words such as "believe" and "faith" have basicallythe same meaning that they do in English and that they are ofteninterpreted to say more than they actually do by well-meaning theologiansand lay-persons.He cites several examples from scripture where the wordsuse their common meaning where it would be clearly erroneous to ascribe tothem extra meaning.Many of these passages are the same ones used tosupport the concept of works being a necessary result or fruit of one'ssalvation.

The concept of the total freeness of salvation contained inthe book often draws the accusation of "antinominanism" -"against law" or "lawless."However, the author makesclear in the book that a saved person is profoundly responsible for hisactions, and that there are consequences in the life to come for one'sdisobedience in this life - which is clearly not advocating lawlessness,but does teach the concept of eternal rewards.

Best book on eternal rewards!
This is the best book on eternal rewards today. It offers wonderful insight into difficult passages. Zane has a marvelous way of explaining the Bible.

Zane Hodges was my professor and mentor in seminary. His lifematches his beliefs. He is an extremely gracious and godly man.

I highlyrecommend this book.

Grace Triumphant!
I agree with Dr. Charles Stanley of "In Touch" and Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta, "A need has arisen in the evangelical community for a return to the simple message of salvation by faithalone." (Grace in Eclipse - Forward) "Grace in Eclipse"helps to address this need by showing that many passages which people haveconfused into teaching salvation by works or proof of salvation by works,actually teach the often forgotten subject of eternal rewards.

Forexample, the phrase "inherit the kingdom" is connected with workstime and time again in the New Testament. It does not make theologicalsense to assume this phrase refers to eternal salvation. Otherwise,works-salvation is being taught, which the Bible has made clear in manyplaces that salvation is by faith alone in Christ alone. In addition, thisassumption does not make sense with the actual words of the text itself. Ifsomeone told you that you are going to "inherit Michael Jordan'shome" versus that your are going to be allowed to "live inMichael Jordan's home", any reasonable person would know that what isbeing spoken of is two very different things. Thus, "inheriting thekingdom" is an eternal reward based on works, that needs to be keptdistinct from eternal salvation based on faith. This is the type of clearbiblically based analysis of passages that I really appreciate about thisbook. Of course the book is much more eloquent than I am in expressing andteaching these ideas.

Grace in Eclipse helps to bring out the light ofunderstanding on many difficult passages of the Bible by remaining true tothe actual text of the passage and by remaining true to the rest ofScripture. This is a book that seeks the meaning of difficult passagesbased on the passages themselves and not through some preconceivedtheological grid. I recommend that all who are seeking the truth read thebook and decide for themselves.

Hodges is an acrobat!
He can wiggle and bend more scriptures than I ever thought possible!Consider Corinthians 6:8-9 which reads "Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers.Do you not know that thewicked will not inherit the kingdom of god."(and there must be twodozen others just like it) -- but NO, according to Zane Paul is talkingabout rewards here, not salvation.Give me a break!I can't stand a bookthat trivializes a truly complicated subject.But Zane managed to do it. ... Great Book
Another great Patricia Rice book that's hard to put down.As always you look forward to the next book!

Delightful and compelling
Raised from birth to become the next Oracle--the spiritual leader of her people--Lissandra Olympus had been taught to be haughty, to obey the will of the gods, and to sacrifice her life, desires, and independence for the welfare of everyone on the Mystic Isle of Aelynn.

When Lissandra's mother, the Oracle, dies, the gods do not choose Lissandra as her successor, however. Instead they give her a vision of whom they select: Murdoch LeDroit, the man who killed Lissandra's father with his uncontrolled magic and who'd been banished from Aelynn for his crime and dangerous powers.

Lissandra must leave the Mystic Isle for the first time and venture to France to do the unthinkable: find the missing Chalice of Plenty (that has eluded the most talented of her people) and persuade Murdoch that only he can prevent Aelynn from being destroyed by its smoldering volcano. Lissandra walks headlong and headstrong into the aftermath of the French Revolution (year 1793), where anyone without appropriate papers could be jailed and beheaded without trial and anyone remotely healthy and strong could be conscripted to fight in the war with Austria. And where one of their people is conspiring against her.

Worse, Murdoch doesn't want to be found, nor does he want to be Oracle. He doesn't even believe in the gods. Ravaged by guilt for killing Lissandra's father, Murdoch abandoned his chance to be Lissandra's husband long ago. Even now, the only way he can focus his power is through aggression, channeling his magic through his swords. Containing his power could kill him, but releasing his power could destroy Lissandra and the whole island of Aelynn. Better he stay far away from both.

Rice weaves a delightful and compelling love story around a self-sacrificing heroine discovering she is not meant to be a leader and an isolated and independent hero who discovers he is. Lissandra and Murdoch verbally, psychologically, and romantically spar through the French countryside and into England during a beautifully detailed, unpredictable era where their friends are just people who haven't been forced to betray them yet.

Mystic Warrior is the third book in the Mystic Isle trilogy, continuing where Mystic Guardian (July '07, Signet Eclipse) and Mystic Rider (July '08, Signet Eclipse) left off. Followers of the series get to revisit the beloved heroes and heroines from previous books to see how they are fairing. Readers new to the series will be introduced to wonderful characters and a strong story that will entice them to track down the previous Mystic Isle books to find out where Rice's brilliantly imaginative trilogy began before reaching its happily ever after.

The spirit guide to healer Lissandra Olympus persuades her to find Murdoch and bring him home and to seek the mysterious missing Chalice of Plenty; both are needed to save the Island. Lissandra locates Murdoch, but is shocked when he rejects her plea to come home as he is needed as the new oracle; which he also scoffs at because the Gods would never select an exiled warrior who has no control over his paranormal skills.He also knows he still desires Lissandra as he did before he was kicked off Aelynn.She also realizes why her spirit guide told her to venture forth as she must heal his spirit in order for him to accept what has been predestined by the gods.Her skills may not be as powerful as her love.

As the "Mystic" saga goes full circle (see MYSTIC GUARDIAN and MYSTIC RIDER), Patricia Rice does so with a great entry.While the mortals are overwhelmed by the French Revolution, the Isle of Aelynn is in deep trouble with the savior being the person exiled several years ago who wants nothing to do with his homeland.Fans will relish this super romantic fantasy as Lissandra learns how to heal Murdoch comes from her heart not her skill.
