Product Description
Infectious diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria, viruses and protozoa, are the most common and widespread health risk associated with drinking water. Most waterborne pathogens are introduced into drinking water supplies by human or animal faeces (enteric pathogens) but they can also exist naturally in water environments as indigenous aquatic micro-organisms. Controlling the risks related to these pathogens is a permanent challenge for the water industry. In addition to the constantly evolving range of pathogens to consider, assessing and managing such risks requires the integration of information issued by a wide range of disciplines. The necessary knowledge is however still sketchy and incomplete for most pathogens, and research efforts are necessary to fill the remaining gaps of knowledge. The purpose of this study is to provide an updated, comprehensive review of current knowledge on a selection of pathogens of interest for the drinking water industry, and to identify the remaining gaps of knowledge and thus the necessary research to be conducted.Emphasis has been laid on the information needed to assess and manage the risks related to each of these pathogens in drinking water production and distribution. The pathogens considered in this review were selected on the basis of: * Their recognized or highly suspected transmission by drinking water through ingestion, inhalation, or contact * Their recognized pathogenic character for humans * The severity of their health effects Each micro-organism in this study is described in a summary fact sheet composed of the following items: microbiology, human health effects, geographical distribution, epidemiology, ecology, inactivation/removal, surrogates, environmental detection and research needs. Since much remains unknown about many aspects that are common to viruses, the study features a general section on virus research needs. A special section summarizes the risk management research conducted on waterborne pathogens. Finally, the conclusion gives an overview of the main gaps in current knowledge on waterborne pathogens. ... Read more

Product Description
"I was someone hungry for stories; more specifically, I was someone who craved after facts. I was, you see, a person with no history. Lacking this, I developed a curiosity about other's people's stories. . . ."

Clara Perez is a reporter on a small South seas island. An orphan raised by nuns, she is a young woman with origins shrouded in mystery. Full of idealistic ambition, she grows tired of the trivial assignments she's given at the daily paper, yearning to write articles of substance. So when the tiny street of Calle de Leon bursts into flames after a student demonstration--and a soldier kills an unarmed man--Clara seizes the chance to cover the explosive story.

Yet after Clara rushes to the burning street to investigate the tragedy, she discovers another, more personal one involving some remarkable truths about her unknown past--ghosts, she realizes, which have been silently pursuing her all her life. And as family secrets begin to unfold, Clara's missing history slowly spreads itself out on the tumultuous backdrop of a country wracked by revolution. . . .

An evocative and multilayered tale, at once political and personal, Eating Fire and Drinking Water is an extraordinary work, a powerful and pulsing novel of politics and commitment, loyalty and love, and the poignant search for truth.

1-0 out of 5 stars Contrived and disjointed
Chai attempts to write many different stories and have them converge. The result is a hodge-podge of poorly developed characters whose relationships feel contrived.

Chai builds suspense by foreshadowing events, but she abuses this ploy too often! It became an annoyance.

The scope of this book is ambitious, and Chai cannot live up to the challenge.Characters, emotions, and plots are lost in the hands of an amateur storyteller.

"The Last Time I Saw My Mother" was a touching book, but this second novel is very poorly written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fourteen Year Old Opinion
I was forced into reading this book. And at first, I found myself confused and thinking "ho-hum" with a matching sigh and yawn. But that didn't last long, because my interest progressed the further I was drawn into the story. I could not put the book down for long.

It's not really about Clara as the book description says, it's more of a series of events intertwined to complement each other. I find the plot complex and something that can't quite be labelled and defined as it's not just about news. I also found it heartbreakingly close to reality, quite poignant with the search for truth and the wise insights brought upon that are just screaming for you to quote them, the morals heroic but not preachy, the characters honorable but not flawless, a backdrop that was well researched in Philippine history. It has suspense, it has drama, it has mystery, it has every one of those genres within its pages. The beauty of this book is in its balance. The story ends nicely, but not fairy tale like. There is acceptance, but honest difficulty in it. There are horrible experiences, but no miraculous cure for them at the end of the book. True to life.

This story definitely warmed my heart to it, and I must say, considering I usually stick to reading fluffy and light books, this holds extraordinary power. I'm glad I read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars The truth is important & must be told.
Eating Fire and Drinking Water by Arlene J. Chai is one of the best books that I have read in recent months. In this story, finding the truth of her unknown past seems to lead Carla, an orphan who was raised by nuns from onemystery to another mystery. The interesting story keeps the reader wantingto finish the book in one sitting to be able to find the truth andidentities of Carla Perez' parents.Carla was named after the name of theorphanage that took care of her when she was given up for adoption.Ithink this book is more or less similar to Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons, aheartwarming story about an eleven-year-old orphan named Ellen. After herparent's death, Ellen was raised in a foster home and that was when she haddecided to adopt the word Foster as her last name.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's like your best friend telling you a story
I could remember vividly most of the events that were stated in the book.Even if the names of the characters and places are changed, they are veryfamiliar. It's definitely a story with the fall of the Marcos regime as abackdrop. I could relate to that book because I was in Manila at that timewhen some of the events mentioned became chapters in Philippine history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating story, very well-written
Set in a "small South Seas island" that is easily recognizable as the Philippines, Eating Fire and Drinking Water is a fascinating, well-written book that successfully melds the chaos of a dying authoritarian regime, the idealism of activist youths, the homegrown cunning of the poor and dispossessed and the surreal religiosity that is all too familiar to Filipinos and those who have spent time in the country. I applaud Arlene J. Chai for not succumbing to the slogans and the jargon that were carelessly brandished about during the period she writes of. And I envy her her skill in putting together a story that is at once plausible (because many of the things she wrote about actually happened) and riveting. I could not put down the book -- everything was too familiar. I felt that I was back to that time and that place that have shaped me to what I am right now. ... Read more

Product Description
Few public places in the early nineteenth century offered men and women from different regions of the United States the opportunity to socialize with each other. At the resorts of Virginia's western mountains and upstate New York's Saratoga Springs, the nation's social, economic, and political leaders gathered to relax and to recuperate, and in the process they began to form a "fledgling aristocracy." As Thomas Chambers reveals, at these resorts the boundaries of class and region were defined, tested, solidified, and broken by the Civil War, but eventually repaired in its aftermath.

No other movement or establishment challenged the springs as the social centers for America's leisure class. Chambers describes how the springs attracted the cultural elite through architecture, bucolic landscapes, and claims of medical authority and high fashion. The conflicts between old and new money created tension, and status was open to negotiation at the springs. Chambers examines how these conflicts illustrate the nearly constant process of social display, class construction, and the negotiation of gender roles.

The attempt to create an American national elite faltered with the approach of the Civil War. Although the Northerners and Southerners who frequented the springs could agree on the place of women in society, on dress and comportment, and on chivalry and honor, they could not agree on the issue of slavery. The springs' popularity did revive after the war as patrons eventually overcame cultural and political differences with nostalgia. ... Read more

Product Description
This text, prepared by an international group of experts, addresses the 'heterotrophic plate count' test which is widely used in drinking-water assessment: what it detects (and what it does not detect), its direct and indirect health significance and its use in the safety management of drinking water supplies. It includes the consensus statement from an expert review meeting and takes account of the presentations and posters at an international conference on the theme co-sponsored by WHO and NSF-International.

It provides valuable information on the utility and the limitations of HPC data in the management and operation of piped water systems as well as other means of providing drinking water to the public. It is of particular value to piped public water suppliers and bottled water suppliers, manufacturers and users of water treatment and transmission equipment and inline treatment devices, water engineers, sanitary and clinical microbiologists, and national and local public health officials and regulators of drinking water quality. ... Product Description
Over the past decade, EDCs and PPCPs have become a major issue for drinking water utilities. The public, scientists, and regulators all have begun actively investigating this issue, and utilities are often tasked with addressing and communicating complex and sometime conflicting scientific data. In recent times, many utilities have been faced with difficult requests from the community regarding occurrence, treatment, and health relevance data. This report serves to provide utilities with summary data useful in addressing these requests. The objective of this project was to develop a concise review on the state of knowledge of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in drinking water so water utilities can communicate with customers and make internal decisions on monitoring and treatment options. The purpose of the guide was to summarize the history, analytical methods, bioassays, occurrence, health relevance, and communication issues regarding endocrine disruptors and pharmaceuticals.Literature regarding EDCs and PPCPs in water was evaluated for applicability to drinking water utilities. Suitable data was determined by publication in peer-reviewed literature, data from within the research team and funding agency, and through suggestions from the Project Advisory Committee. It was not feasible, nor particularly useful, to review every chemical that could be considered a suspected EDC or a PPCP. Therefore, a subset of chemicals was chosen that are representative of the subclasses and types of EDCs and PPCPs that are of current scientific and public interest. The wealth of data evaluated was summarized into succinct chapters that provide the key findings of the review, while providing references for those who seek detailed information. ... Read more

Product Description
This text is the result of work that began early in 1996 by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute. The first part of the book explores and documents the conditions under which the transfer of rural water supply schemes was sustainable and the conditions under which the transfer proved to be a failure. The first report found a great deal of raw potential for collective action in the self-delivery and self-management of rural water supply. It further explores what factors were most conducive to successful self-management and hence scheme sustainability and what factors were most likely to hinder collective action. However, the collective action observed and studied was for the most part spontaneous. Two hypotheses are explored in Part 2, a second study. First, that the raw potential for collective action could be galvanized into sustainable scheme management with the social mobilization of development NGOs. Second, that the critical factor for inducing collective action may be "demand" and the presence of such demand may incline communities towards social mobilization and collective action. Thus, demand and social mobilization could implement each other.Interesting findings emerge from both reports. The book is addressed broadly to those concerned with development and more specifically to institutional economists concerned with collective action issues and the role of NGOs in fostering development and collective action. ... Product Description

Drinking water quality has been a matter of concern for several decades. Disinfection of drinking water improves its microbiological quality and prevents disease outbreaks. However, continuously increasing scientific research concerns the presence of organic and inorganic contaminants in water. Many of these compounds, named haloforms, originate from the procedure of disinfection, being formed during reactions of disinfectants with natural organic matter present in water. Haloforms may possess carcinogenic or mutagenic properties; therefore minimization of their concentrations in drinking water is a critical issue. Regulatory measures are becoming more and more stringent, as new health effects become known and optimized high-sensitivity analytical methodologies are being developed. Up-to-date research findings concerning all these aspects have been collected, critically reviewed, summarized, and are presented and discussed in the present book. ... Read more

Product Description

This book examines the drivers for improved performance of the drinking water sector in Ghana by focussing on the roleĀ of the national macro-environment, water supply related organisations and institutions and the water service providers (urban and small towns).

Political interference, which adversely affects the drinking water sector in both the urban and the small towns' water supply are described. The drinking water sector is gradually implementing aspects of the New Public Management (NPM) with the small towns' water sector ,ore advanced than the urban water sector. Water pricing in the dinking water sector is analysed and its particular implication on the urban poor is highlighted. The role of the policy, legal and regulatory environment in achieving universal service coverage in sustainable, effective, equitable and efficient manner is presented.
