Product Description
Drinking water policies and research are intimately linked. It is thanks to the scientific progress made over the last 25 years in identifying and controlling toxic products in drinking water that regulations have developed in such a way that the protection of public health from waterborne diseases has drastically improved. The integration of research outputs into the policy-making progress requires close cooperation among the scientific and policy communities, which is not always straightforward. Exchanges among scientific and policy-making communities are certainly representing key elements of progress for a better environmental protection. In this respect, analytical developments linked to drinking water are at the core of the science-policy debate.

This book "Analytical Methods for Drinking Water: Advances in Sampling and Analysis" reflects this awareness in joining recent analytical developments with policy considerations. A first chapter gives an overview of EU and US drinking water policies, as well as on standardization. Analytical developments are described in depth in the second chapter, focusing on bromate in drinking water. The third chapter deals with the development of a sampling protocol for lead in drinking water, thus mixing analytical development with standardization needs. Finally, the fourth chapter focuses on standardization aspects (pre-normative research) related to materials in contact with drinking water.

This book, written by experts in the field of drinking water policy and analysis, illustrates recent scientific advances in this area, which have contributed to policy development and will be of direct use to policy-makers, water scientists, researchers and analytical laboratories. ... Read more

Product Description
There are many by-products of water disinfection that are still not fully understood and can be potentially harmful. In this volume all the current research in this area is discussed, along with an examination of the role of NOM (natural organic matter) and its relationship to DBP (disinfection by-product) formation and control in drinking water. Understanding the relationship of NOM to DBP may well lead to new techniques for analyzing and treating water and enable reasonable choices to be made for source-water protection, treatment plant process optimization, and distribution system operation to control DBP's. ... Product Description

A typical water distribution system is complex and chaotic with varying piping configurations, water flows, chemical reactions, and microbiological activity. It is therefore no surprise that monitoring water quality can be a daunting task, not to mention dealing with the devastating and costly effects of:

  • Noncompliance with the Lead and Copper Rule
  • Pinhole leaks in water service lines and private plumbing
  • Vulnerability to microorganisms in the water distribution system
  • Unwanted side effects from treatment chemicals
  • Mistakes in treatment chemicals and dosage amounts

These common water quality issues can be avoided by routinely monitoring key water quality parameters in the distribution system in a controlled and standardized manner. While proactive monitoring costs money, having water quality problems is even more costly.

Water Distribution System Monitoring: A Practical Approach for Evaluating Drinking Water Quality provides a practical step-by-step approach and open-source technology for proactive water quality management. It describes a method for routinely monitoring the water distribution system by:

  • Assembling a standardized monitoring station
  • Planning a monitoring strategy, and
  • Interpreting and using the water quality data

Deliver safe and economical drinking water to your customers. Why wait three years to find out if the water system is in compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule? Why guess which corrosion control chemical is the right one? Why guess how much disinfection is needed in the water distribution system?

Optimize your chemical usage, minimize your operational expenses, and confirm that the water is safe. Laying out a path to quality control and process improvement, this book provides the tools for well-defined and measurable control of water quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Toxic Cyanobacteria in Water-from beginners to advanced
I would recomend this book to anyone looking for a comprehensive and easy to read text about toxic cyanobacteria.Chorus and Bartram have managed to fit together a great deal of very informative notes by many differentauthors in a format that progresses naturally from basic concepts ofcyanobacteria and their helpful/harmful effects to what can be done tomonitor, and manage them.Wheter you are just becoming interested incyanobacteria or lake health, or have been studying it for many years, thisbook should be part of your collection. The section on analytical methodsfor cyanobacteria provide excellent basic methodology in this area, butanyone wishing to undertake detailed analysis not from scratch would alsobe well off searching published methods in scientific journals as they willnot find all the nitty gritty details they will need.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and usefulbook on toxic cyanobacteria
This publication is useful to professionals dealing with problems related to Harmful Algal Blooms, including public health, water supply and management staff, since it discusses monitoring programmes and criteria fordifferent water uses (drinking water, recreational uses, organismsconsumption, haemodialysis), as well as a thorough discussion on remedialmeasures. It is essential to environment control officers, and because itwas published on behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO) it can beused as an official advice for countries lacking specific legislation onthe subject. It is useful as well for undergraduate and graduate studentsas its introduction and initial chapters present a summary on cyanobacteriaand its ecology (diversity, distribution, related environmental factors)and physiology. It then presents the different toxins produced by theseorganisms and their consequences to human health as well as a discussion onsafe levels and safe practices for each water use. This book discusses theimportance of this problem worldwide, through several case studies and wasproduced by a group of well known researchers from various continents. Someissues and events are discussed in several self-explained boxes within thepublication, which are intelligible and useful. The final chapters discussrisk management, monitoring programmes, field work, sampling and analyticalmethodology, including phytoplankton, clorophyll a and nutrients analysis, essential for those concerned with hazard identification and evaluation. This book is also interesting to everyone concerned with water quality andenvironmental issues, for cyanobacteria blooms are a widespread problemwhich results of excessive nutriet loads on water bodies, mostly because ofinadequate land use and inefficient water quality policies. Ultimately itsremediation depends on public awareness.

Product Description
This unique volume provides a comprehensive overview of all the major aspects of modern drinking water systems in the western European context. It not only covers the theoretical principles, but also the historical background and practical aspects of design and operation, legislation, planning and finance of drinking water supply in its social and economic context.

The principles and practices are illustrated using experiences from The Netherlands. The Dutch drinking water supply is well known for its multiple barrier systems and high technical standards. The Dutch drinking water is of high quality and does not contain chlorine, and the Dutch therefore readily drink tap water and do not see the need to buy bottled water or in-house filters, with their drawbacks on national economics, public health and the environment. This illustrative overview can be used as a reference for other countries and regions.

Product Description
The continued lack of access to adequate amounts of safe drinking water is one of the primary causes of infant morbidity and mortality worldwide and a serious situation which governments, international agencies and private organizations are strivingto alleviate. Barriers to providing safe drinking water for rural areas and small communities that must be overcome include the financing and stability of small systems, their operation, and appropriate, cost-effective technologies to treat and deliver water to consumers. While we know how to technically produce safe drinking water, we are not always able to achieve sustainable safe water supplies for small systems in developed and developing countries. Everyone wants to move rapidly to reach the goal of universal safe drinking water, because safe water is the most fundamental essential element for personal and social health and welfare. Without safe water and a safe environment, sustained personal economic and cultural development is impossible. Often small rural systems are the last in the opportunity line.Safe Drinking Water in Small Systems describes feasible technologies, operating procedures, management, and financing opportunities to alleviate problems faced by small water systems in both developed and developing countries. In addition to widely used traditional technologies this reference presents emerging technologies and non-traditional approaches to water treatment, management, sources of energy, and the delivery of safe water. ... Product Description
Drinking water provides an efficient source for the spread of gastrointestinal microbial pathogens capable of causing serious human disease. The massive death toll and burden of disease worldwide caused by unsafe drinking water is a compelling reason to value the privilege of having safe drinking water delivered to individual homes. On rare occasions, that privilege has been undermined in affluent nations by waterborne disease outbreaks traced to the water supply. Using the rich and detailed perspectives offered by the evidence and reports from the Canadian public inquiries into the Walkerton (2000) and North Battleford (2001) outbreaks to develop templates for understanding their key dimensions, over 60 waterborne outbreaks from 15 affluent countries over the past 30 years are explored as individual case studies. Recurring themes and patterns are revealed and the critical human dimensions are highlighted suggesting insights for more effective and more individualized preventive strategies, personnel training, management, and regulatory control. Safe Drinking Water aims to raise understanding and awareness of those factors that have most commonly contributed to or caused drinking-wa ... Read more
