Product Description
John Stevens Cabot Abbott (1805-1877) who also wrote under the pseudonyms Jacob Abbott and Joseph S. C. Abbott, was an American historian, pastor, and pedagogical writer. Dr. Abbott graduated at Bowdoin College in 1825, prepared for the ministry at Andover Theological Seminary, and between 1830 and 1844, when he retired from the ministry in the Congregational Church, preached successively at Worcester, Roxbury and Nantucket, all in Massachusetts. Owing to the success of a little work, The Mother at Home; or, The Principles of Maternal Duty, he devoted himself, from 1844 onwards, to literature. He was a voluminous writer of books on Christian ethics, and of popular histories, which were credited with cultivating a popular interest in history. He is best known as the author of the widely popular Napoleon Bonaparte (1855), in which the various elements and episodes in Napoleon's career are described. Abbott takes a very favourable view towards his subject throughout. Also among his principal works are: History of the Civil War in America (1863-66), Hortense (1870), The History of Frederick II, Called Frederick the Great (1871) and Daniel Boone: The Pioneer of Kentucky (1872). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I learned things about Dan'l that I never heard of before
I learned a great deal about Dan'l I never heard of before, such as he renounced American Citizenship in later life and left America, that he had gone west as a mountain man in the last days of his life, and many other items of interest to the frontier fan.

A steal at under $2, it is worth the price alone for the early history of America the book opens with.

I recommend it to any American, and should be required reading today especially after the Patriot Act, you may find that you too, like Daniel Boone are more 'terrorist' by today's definition than you think! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Recipes Seem Good While Layout Suffers (Kindle on iPhone)
I'll start by saying that the recipes in this book appear to be good. But I can only say "appear" because actually browsing through them is a huge pain. First of all, there is no table of contents. One must manually go through every recipe in order to find the one they want. Also, the recipes are sometimes formatted in mysterious ways. For example, sometimes the recipe will begin halfway down the bottom of the page then continue on to the next. Oh, and I didn't even mention the 2 pages of white left between every recipe. Who thought this was a good idea?

I am reading it on the iPhone so your Kindle experience may differ but I was not impressed. But, for 3 dollars, you get what you pay for. ... Read more

Product Description
Thomas Henry Huxley PC, FRS (1825-1895) was an English biologist. He was instrumental in developing scientific education in Britain, and fought against the more extreme versions of religious tradition. He had little schooling, and taught himself almost everything he knew. Remarkably, he became perhaps the finest comparative anatomist of the second half of the nineteenth century. He worked first on invertebrates, clarifying the relationships between groups that were previously little understood. Later, he worked more on vertebrates, especially on the relationship between man and the apes. Another of his important conclusions was that birds evolved from dinosaurs, namely, small carnivorous theropods. This view is widely held today. The tendency has been for this fine anatomical work to be overshadowed by his energetic controversial activity in favour of evolution, and by his extensive public work on scientific education, both of which had significant effect on society in Britain and elsewhere. ... I really appreciated this book. It's kind of an old fashioned Junior League Cookbook. These ladies were raising money by asking chapter participants in each state in the US to submit recipes. The money was being raised to fund trips for less fortunate women to a women's exposition in the late 1800s.Instead of using modern measurements, they say use 1/2 tea-cup.There are some good very old fashoned recipes in here.It is great for the cookbook collector or the adventurous cook. ... Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) was a Lebanese American of Assyrian descent, an artist, poet and writer. He was born Gibran Khalil Gibran in Lebanon (at the time a Syrian Province of the Ottoman Empire) and spent much of his productive life in the United States. While most of Gibran's early writings were in Syriac and Arabic, most of his work published after 1918 was in English. Gibran also took part in the New York Pen League, also known as the "immigrant poets" (al-mahjar), alongside other important Lebanese American authors such as Ameen Rihani ("the father of Lebanese American literature"), Mikhail Naimy and Elia Abu Madi. Gibran's best-known work is The Prophet, a book composed of 26 poetic essays, first written in English in 1923. The Prophet remains famous to this day, having been translated into more than 20 languages. Andrew McFarland Davis (1833-1920) was the author of: A Preliminary Railroad Survey in Wisconsin (1857) and Indian Games: An Historical Research (1886). ""There are, " says Father Brebeuf in his account of what was worthy ofnote among the Hurons in 1636, "three kinds of games particularly in vogue with this people; cross, platter, and straw. The first two are, they say, supreme for the health. Does not that excite our pity? Lo, a poor sick person, whose body is hot with fever, whose soul foresees the end of his days, and a miserable sorcerer orders for him as the only cooling remedy, a game of cross. Sometimes it is the invalid himself who may perhaps have dreamed that he will die unless the country engages in a game of cross for his health. " ... Read more

Product Description
Richard Austin Freeman (1862-1943) was a British writer of detective stories, mostly featuring the medico-legal forensic investigator Dr. Thorndyke. He invented the inverted detective story and used some of his early experiences as a colonial surgeon in his novels. A large proportion of the Dr. Thorndyke stories involve genuine, but often quite arcane, points of scientific knowledge, from areas such as tropical medicine, metallurgy and toxicology. His first stories were written in collaboration with Dr. John James Pitcairn (1860-1936), medical officer at Holloway Prison and published under the nom de plume "Clifford Ashdown". His first Thorndyke story, The Red Thumb Mark, was published in 1907 and shortly afterwards he pioneered the inverted detective story, in which the identity of the criminal is shown from the beginning: some short stories with this feature were collected in The Singing Bone in 1912. His other works include John Thorndyke's Cases (1909), The Eye of Osiris (1911), The Vanishing Man (1911), The Mystery of 31 New Inn (1912), The Uttermost Farthing: A Savant's Vendetta (1913), A Silent Witness (1914), Helen Vardon's Confession (1922) and The Cat's Eye (1923). ... Product Description
Stephen Crane (1871-1900) was an American novelist, poet and journalist. He is best known for his novel Red Badge of Courage (1895). The novel introduced for most readers Crane's strikingly original prose, an intensely rendered mix of impressionism, naturalism and symbolism. He lived in New York City a bohemian life where he observed the poor in the Bowery slums as research for his first novel, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (1893), a milestone in uncompromising realism and in the early development of literary naturalism. He became shipwrecked in route to Cuba in early 1897, an experience which he later transformed into his short story masterpiece, The Open Boat (1898). Crane's poetry, which he called 'lines' rather than poems, was also strikingly new in its minimalist meter and rhyme. It employed symbolic imagery in order to communicate at times heavy-handed irony and paradox. Other works include Active Service (1899), The Monster (1899), The Blue Hotel (1899), Whilomville Stories (1900) and Wounds in the Rain (1900). ... Read more

Product Description
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (1896-1940) was an Irish American Jazz Age novelist and short story writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century. He was the self-styled spokesman of the "Lost Generation" - Americans born in the 1890's who came of age during World War I. He finished four novels, left a fifth unfinished, and wrote dozens of short stories. The 1920's proved the most influential decade of Fitzgerald's development. His debut novel, This Side of Paradise (1920) examines the lives and morality of post-World War I youth. Flappers and Philosophers (1920) was his first collection of short stories. His second novel, The Beautiful and Damned (1922), demonstrates an evolution and maturity in his writing, and provides an excellent portrait of America during the Jazz Age, as does Tales of the Jazz Age (1922). The Great Gatsby, which many consider his masterpiece, was published in 1925. It has since been adapted for the theatre and filmed several times. His last novel was Tender is the Night (1934). ... Product Description
Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) was an Irish playwright and Whig statesman. Richard was educated at Harrow School, and was to study law. However, his highly romantic elopement with Elizabeth Linley put paid to such hopes. His first play, The Rivals, produced at Covent Garden in 1775, was a failure on its first night. Sheridan cast a more capable actor for the role of the comic Irishman for its second performance, and it was a smash which immediately established the young playwright’s reputation. It has gone on to become a standard of English literature. His most famous play School for Scandal (1777) is considered one of the greatest comedies of manners in English. It was followed by The Critic (1779), an updating of the satirical restoration play The Rehearsal. He was also a Whig politician, entering parliament in 1780. A great public speaker, he remained in parliament until 1812, and was a leading figure in the party. Amongst his other works are St. Patrick’s Day; or, The Scheming Lieutenant (1775), The Duenna (1775), Scarborough and the Critic (1777) and School for Scandal (1777). ... Read more

Product Description
Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), better known by the pen name Mark Twain, was an American humorist, satirist, lecturer and writer. Twain is most noted for his novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885). He is also known for his quotations. His first important work, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, was published in 1865. His next publication was The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which drew on his youth in Hannibal. The character of Tom Sawyer was modeled on twain as a child, with traces of two schoolmates, John Briggs and Will Bowen. His next major published work, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, solidified him as a noteworthy American writer. Some have called it the first Great American Novel. Finn was an offshoot from Tom Sawyer and proved to have a more serious tone than its predecessor. The main premise behind Huckleberry Finn is the young boy's belief in the right thing to do even though the majority of society believes that it was wrong. ... Read more

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (Baby Board Books)

American writer Samuel Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain has given us some literary gems with Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and his travel adventures in nineteenth-century Europe and to Australia and New Zealand. Here is is discussing telling rather than writing a story.

Humour, he says, is American while comic is English and witty is French. He follows this typically brilliant essay with examples of story telling and some intriguing experiences of mental telegraphy.

Good on you Dodo Press for specialising in rare and out-of-print books.

Mark Twain devotees will want to add this slim volume to their collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the mouth of an American master
An entertaining read from on of America's treasured voices. I was particularly interested in the "How to Tell a Story" Essay and Mark Twain's lessons are just as relavent today. Kindle version was a welcome convenience and you can't beat the price!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection but not what is described here
The actual contents of the free and the one dollar Kindle editions include:

How to Tell a Story
The Wounded Soldier
The Golden Arm
Mental Telegraphy Again
The Invalids Story

"Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offences" and "Traveling With a Reformer" do not appear in this edition, in either the free or the $1.00 edition, despite the editorial comment to the contrary. The wonderful Fenimore Cooper essay is available online several places for free; see the second Comment for a link to UVA's collection. There are at least two Kindle versions for a buck or so:

The Literary Offenses of Fenimore Cooper $1.00.

Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offences $.99

Nonetheless, this is still a very interesting collection, especially if you read aloud to children or adults. Twain has a great gift for explaining how to tell even a poor story.

Despite his disclaimer: "I do not claim that I can tell a story as it ought to be told. I only claim to know how a story ought to be told, for I have been almost daily in the company of the most expert story-tellers for many years."

A joy to read, silently or aloud, and the price is right.

Product Description
William Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) was an English novelist, playwright, and writer of short stories. He was hugely popular in his time, and wrote 27 novels, more than 50 short stories, at least 15 plays, and over 100 pieces of non-fiction work. His best-known works are The Woman in White (1860), The Moonstone (1868), Armadale (1866) and No Name (1862). His works were classified at the time as 'sensation novels', a genre seen nowadays as the precursor to detective fiction and suspense fiction. He also wrote penetratingly on the plight of women and on the social and domestic issues of his time. His novel, No Name combined social commentary - the absurdity of the law as it applied to children of unmarried parents - with a densely-plotted revenge thriller. Amongst his other works are: Basil (1852), Hide and Seek (1854), After the Dark (1856), The Frozen Deep (1857), The Queen of Hearts (1859), Man and Wife (1870), The New Magdalen (1873), The Law and the Lady (1875), The Two Destinies (1876), and A Rogue's Life (1879). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Smart and Mischievous
This is a book that has many little mini adventures, broken up into chapters, that all tie in together to create a continuous story that young readers will love. The main character, Peter Rabbit, starts off the tale by trying to come up with another name for himself, one that shouts prestige and presence. Everybody he knows thinks this is silly, and Peter's friends devise a mischievous scheme to show Peter the downsides of changing his name. Peter learns his mistake and quickly changes his name back. The book goes on like this with most of the chapters revolving around mischief or trickery.

The forest dwelling characters in this story are well distinguished and each brings a certain characteristic about them that really makes this book shine. There is a Fox who is on the look out for Peter and a poetic skunk, just to name a few.

I found the adventures, and the overall book to be very funny and interesting. Qualities I'm sure young 9-12 year old readers will appreciate.

Product Description
Orison Swett Marden (1850-1924) was an American writer associated with the New Thought Movement. He also held a degree in medicine, and was a successful hotel owner. Marden supported himself during his college years by working in a hotel and afterward by becoming the owner of several hotels and a resort. Financial reverses ended that career, and in 1893, he was again working as a hotel manager, in Chicago, during the time that the World's Columbian Exposition was attracting visitors to that city from all over the world. It was during this period that he began to write down his philosophical ideas, with the goal of inspiring others as he had been inspired by Samuel Smiles. Marden's first book, Pushing to the Front, was published in 1894. He followed this with several more volumes on the subjects of success, the cultivation of will-power, and positive thinking. He founded Success Magazine in 1897 and was also a regular contributor to Elizabeth Towne's New Thought magazine Nautilus during the first two decades of the 20th century. ... Read more
