4-0 out of 5 stars great book
this is a great book. my son LOVED it when he first got it. unfortunately the other reviews i read about it's durability didn't stand up so well. my 3 year old ripped 2 of the pop-ups the same day. nothing a little super glue couldn't fix, but i was really counting on the reviews of others as far as the durability went. but it's a wonderful book and he loves it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Strickland work
My kids loved this cute story and the beautiful illustrations so much we wore out 3 copies. It went to the hospital with one child, went to show-and-tell with a couple of them. It came on vacations. We had to carry it in the car at all times and read it at bedtime every day. It's a great children's work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pop-ups
The story does not have that much too it, but the pop-ups are really neat! My four year old loves it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Let's roar!
Big and colorful dinosaurs pop out at you as you turn the pages of this nice book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Exciting Pop-up
Though not a literary marvel, this pop up book has maintained my child's interest for a very long time. The dinosaurs inside jump off the page at you. This is not your ordinary pop up book.It is one of our favorites. ... Read more

Product Description

This extraordinary true story introduces readers to the unforgettable Waterhouse Hawkins: Victorian artist and visionary who built the world's first life-size models of dinosaurs!

With impeccable attention to detail, Barbara Kerley unearths a story of consuming passion, triumph, loss, and courage--and ultimately, of an extraordinary legacy that lives on today. Caldecott Medalist Brian Selznick celebrates this complex and fascinating individual through luminous, soul-stirring paintings that form a visual masterpiece.

Amazon.com Review
"Can you fathom a time when almost no one in the world knew what a dinosaur looked like?" Barbara Kerley and Brian Selznick can--and it was a time when people used words like "fathom" a lot, about 150 years ago. This author-illustrator team became experts on the subject, delving deeply into the life of Victorian artist Waterhouse Hawkins, the first person to ever summon up, sketch, mold, and fabricate these ancient giants into full-size models.

The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins, presented in breathlessly earnest chapbook style ("A True Dinosaur Story in Three Ages"), follows the life of Hawkins from his early fossil studies to the first iguanodon that he extrapolates into existence for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The story then follows his subsequent victories and defeats at home and abroad: a triumphantly unorthodox New Year's Eve dinner party with the fathers of paleontology; the unveiling of Dinosaur Island; Boss Tweed's scuttling of a planned Paleozoic Museum in Central Park, and the destruction of years of Hawkins's work in the process.

And the story is all true, although this veracity does make the pacing a bit clunky in spots. Then again, Kerley and Selznick have researched their hero with meticulous care (check out the copious endnotes), so perhaps only Hawkins himself can be blamed for leading a life that didn't always progress in perfect dramatic form. Overshadowing the narrative, though, are Selznick's stately, ghostly illustrations--of towering megalosaurs and Hawkins shuffling about with cane and top hat--which more than make up the difference. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not about dinosaurs, but about the introduction of their renderings
What an enjoyable, informative book!

It is so hard for me to wrap my head around never having seen a full dinosaur skeleton, or even a rendering of the creatures! But, thanks to artist Waterhouse Hawkins (as well as other artists, researches, and Queen Victoria and Prince Albert) that was all changed for the reopening of the Crystal Palace!

Waterhouse was assigned with introducing the populace to models of what researchers and scientists inferred dinosaurs would look like (from the odds and ends bones already discovered).

But, Waterhouse's accomplishments didn't stop there, and he continued to create renderings throughout his life.

This book isn't so much about dinosaurs (though there is some fascinating information on the development of what people *thought* they looked like).Instead, this book highlights Hawkins' major achievements (and set backs) and left me wondering how I'd never known about this man before.

The illustrations are wonderfully vibrants, thanks again to the wonderful Brian Selznick!

Definitely recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I bought this book for my Grandson as a birthday gift and he loved it.The illustrations are incredible and it's a great way to introduce archeology and scence generally, to a young child. My grandson is only eight and he was thrilled with this book. I think books about science deserve the same kind of wonderful illustrations as works of fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Wonderful, Moving...A Special Book
This is a wonderful and moving story and what's even better is it's true.

This book tells the story of the creative genius Waterhouse Hawkins who paints and creates life size models of dinosaurs way back in the 1800s.

It's a beautiful picture book, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mystery of Ireta Review
I enjoyed this book a great deal as the characters are well developed and I like having all the books together. I have been a fan of Anne McCaffrey for a number of years and have read and re-read most of her stories. I read the Dinosaur Planet years ago and now can have the whole series together and find out how it all ends.
I highly reccomend it for fantasy and Si-Fi readers!

2-0 out of 5 stars More Planet Pirates
This is an expanded look at one episode in the Planet Pirates novel and is a bit much if one has read the other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dinosaur Planet and Dinosaur Planet Survivors
I had previously read both of these titles as individual books; however having them combined into one is nice.I really enjoyed this series which leads into the Planet Pirates, great writer, with a good way of weaving you into the story and keeping your attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not PERN but Fun
This story may take place in the same universe as PERN but is as unaware of it as they would be of it. It may also be the future or alternate universe of Damia and the FT&T crowd, who knows if technology ever overtook ESP?

Primarily this is a space/planetary adventure complete with aliens and social commentary much like the original Star Trek (of which I am also a fan). If I tell you the plot I've said too much so trust this quick read to entertain and delight and it's a good read aloud story for the 7-13 crowd and a secret pleasure for the adults too.

4-0 out of 5 stars dinosaur lady
i thoroughly enjoyed the book. there were a few oh-hums but even they had important info to read. this is a good book to read for any dinosaur fan. got out a dinosaur dictionary to look up the animals that exist on the planet and even that was interesting to do. then in the second book is TOR a rock animal who flies, facinating and the nasty heavy-worlders from first book. you wonder if what the book tells you on how the dinosaurs got there could be true. read the book and enjoy. ... This is my favorite book in the whole Magic Tree House series, because they wrote about a new dinosaur called Giganotosaurus. I was looking everywhere for a book like this, just page after page of different dinosaurs. My five year-old son loves dinosaurs. He has looked through this book 10 times since we got it 2 days ago! It's HUGE and heavy, he reads it on the floor or props it up on the back of the couch and has to walk a couple steps to turn the page! I've never seen such gorgeous photographic looking dinosaur pictures. On each page it has infomation about the dinosaur, where he lived, how big he is in relationship to man, and - my favorite - the phonetic pronunciation of the dinosaurs names! Yey! Product Description

Among the exciting events in recent dinosaur paleontology has been the discovery of significant numbers of dinosaur fossils in South America, many of which are markedly different from their cousins to the north. Fernando E. Novas, one of the scientists closely involved with these important discoveries, presents an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the dinosaurs of South America. Novas reviews the dinosaur record in the region from Patagonia to Peru, discussing the anatomy, systematics, and evolution of these dinosaurs (and their immediate precursors) within both paleogeographic and paleoecological contexts. He describes all of the important finds in chapter-length studies of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. Because the Cretaceous record is so rich, Novas devotes separate chapters to sauropods, theropods, and ornithischians, and puts together the evolutionary story of the period in a final summary chapter. Generously illustrated in color and in black and white, The Age of Dinosaurs in South America is a first-of-its-kind report on these unique and wonderfully diverse dinosaur faunas.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Age of Dinosaurs in South America
This is the most outstanding book ever written on the Dinosaurs of South America, grand in its scope and full of beatiful pictures, you are certain to learn a great deal about the dinosaurs of South America and the continent as it was when the animals inhabited it.
If you love dinosaurs pick this volume up!

4-0 out of 5 stars many new findings
For anyone with an interest in dinosaurs, the book is an extensive review of many recent diggings in South America. The narrative is heavily illustrated with sketches and colour plates of fossilised bones. Also, it shows how from such bones, much can be inferred about the dinosaurs' habits and living conditions.

The reconstructions of the whole dinosaurs are especially graphic.

The book is also more than a mere recitation of fossils. It places each fossil in the much broader perspective of known and newly found families. A comparative analysis is often done on each fossil.

The book perhaps helps address relatively overlooked finds in South America, compared to better known results in North America.

Brett-Surman admit that they were "teenage geeks who lovedthe movies of Willis O'Brien, Ray Harryhausen, and Jim Danforth, andthe novels of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Rice Burroughs,"and they do not neglect their roots. There are chapters covering allthe hot topics of contemporary dinosaur research, includingfootprints, metabolism, and meteor strikes; there is also a section ondetermining how many lawyers you need to feed a captive Tyrannosaurusrex. It's a remarkable fusion between scientific research--warts,conflicts, and all--and public understanding. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A seriously useful gift for the intellectually challanged general reader with cutting edge based scientific material
I have just received a giftfrom my mother serena which is yet a another useful informative fascinating book withintellectually cutting edged based challangingmaterial in it such as asking and answering a lot of scientific argumentive questions of debate but without the technical so-called junk or jargon in it which still nonetheless makes it worth buying for reading because it gives readers a scientifically accurate insight into the fascinating world of dinosaurs but unfortunately with all the bloody and gory color realstic illustrations in it which put,s it off a bit for me four and half stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, scientific overview
When looking for some good scientific information about dinosaurs, it was difficult to find books that were not picture encyclopedias or technical reports.I found what I was looking for in this book.

The Complete Dinosaur is a set of articles that are appropriate for a scientifically-inclined amateur that cover dinosaur anatomy, biology, physiology, and ecology. The breadth of topics covered is quite good, and I learned a lot from the book. Some of the articles get quite technical, but they are all accessible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Congratulations - Excellent
Thanks for your product - it's too much good!
It's satisfy my better expectatives...

Have a good day...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great breadth of topics, great quality.
This is a great intermediate level dinosaur book. It has a lot of details, but not enough to prevent non-experts from following it. It has 43 chapters divided into six parts. The chapters were written by experts in the individual subjects. This has the nice feature of making the chapters fairly independent, however it also makes the presentation a bit disjointed at times.

The first part deals with the process and history of discovering dinosaurs. The history of science isn't my favorite topic, so I just skimmed this part and can't really comment on it.

The second part describes the tools and techniques used to study dinosaurs. This includes excavations, the study of bones, taxonomy and cladistics, morphology, biomolecular techniques and exhibiting dinosaurs. There is a lot of interesting information, this material is fairly fundamental to the study of dinosaurs. Some of it is pretty easy to follow, some (like data management techniques) is a little more difficult to follow (for me anyway). None of it is prohibitively difficult.

Part three is a collection of chapters covering archosaurs, early dinosaurs and the various dinosaur families. Given that they were written by different authors, there is no consistent format for the chapters. I would have liked to have seen more material on how the families are related to each other. On the whole, I liked the level of detail.

Part four describes dinosaur biology. It contains a fascinating set of topics. A partial list of them is: plants in the Mesozoic, dinosaur diets, dinosaur dynamics, dinosaur eggs (covered in a nice amount of detail) and dinosaur paleopathology (a topic that doesn't often seem to get covered in this level of detail). In my experience many of these topics are somewhat neglected (either covered only lightly or not at all), this, and the quality, made it my favorite part of the book.

The fifth part deals with dinosaur evolution, including the way their environment changed thru time. It concludes with a discussion of dinosaur extinction, presenting both gradualist and catastrophist arguments.

The final part is one chapter covering how dinosaurs are portrayed in the media and how they are perceived by society.

Although the book had many authors, the quality is uniformly excellent. I generally liked the selection of topics. I wouldn't consider this an entry level book, but it's definitely readable by non-experts, I enjoyed the level of detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction to dinosaur science
Do you want to get "into" Dinosaurs? This is the place to start. The Complete Dinosaur is a comprehensive introduction to what is currently known about dinosaurs and how it is known. From the history of the earliest fossil hunters to dinosaur biology, paleogeography and even an overview of dinosaurs in the media throughout the years.
The book is organized into chapters, each of which contains a deep look at its subject and yet is perfectly readable by laymen (such as myself).Even though many contributors wrote for this book, there is a sense of cohesiveness through the entire book.At a massive 768 pages, it is a very long read but seldom does it get tedious except perhaps a few chapters on dinosaur biology that get a bit too technical.
The book contains abundant references at the end of each chapter and a huge index a the end so it serves as a very useful reference on your library.
Other books that compare to this one are "The Scientific American Book of Dinosaurs" edited by Greg Paul and "Encylopedia of Dinosaurs" edited by Phil Currie, both renown paleontologists."The Complete Dinosaur" is more comprehensive than the first one and is arranged in a more readable format than the second one which arranges its articles in alphabetic order.
The only weakness of the book is its age.Written in 1997 it is probably due to a revision given that the fiels of paleontology has been progressing by leaps and bounds in the last few decades.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great level 3 book
Is scientific accuracy the most important thing in exciting young readers?I think the reviews that get caught up in that are missing the big picture. Most early readers about dinosaurs are not written as a story with clever text and excellent illustration. This book is.It excites young kids to read and learn more about dinosaurs. It is not a scientific text, but a story. This excellent book got my son to move from a level 1-2 reader to a level 3, then quickly on to chapter books. He found this book exciting and could read it over and over. This is great for kids taking the next leap in reading.I highly recommend it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Stuff my 3 year old knows is WRONG!
"BRONTOSAURUS"??!! That name has been known to be incorrect for 100 years. And those dinosaurs couldn't hide in water and a meteor strike is what led to extinction.I can't believe how full of wrong info this 2007 book is.I could understand if it were a "storybook" but it's supposed to be non-fiction.

2-0 out of 5 stars beware of 4-for-3 discount on this item!
Beware of the "discount" on this item. I bought over $25 to be eligible for free shipping, and my order listed over $25 purchased. But then a "4-for-3 "discount was added that made the order go below $25 so my shipping charge was $8 and I paid more for the total order by getting this "discount."Double check your order.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Great for Toddlers and Pre-schoolers"
"Great for Toddlers and Pre-schoolers"
This book is durable and it is a pop-up book. That alone is amazing. Most of the pop-ups are not made out of paper or cardboard. They are made out of a durable, soft, material that I do not know the name of.The illustrations are bold and adventurous.

The story is about the escapades dinosaurs go on to get food, play, get messy, and go to sleep.Parish and Isaac loved both the story and the illustrations. They kept feeling of the pop-ups, which have an unusual texture. Both boys and girls will enjoy this captivating tale.It is appropriate for toddlers and pre-schoolers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Major scientific errors! Terrible!
This is a classic book for young readers and I had thought it would be accurate on the level of the readers. I looked back at a copy with a publishing date of 1985 and I was shocked when I saw the apatasaurus called the old, incorrect name of "brontosaurus." But that was not the worst error! Many older books have the name wrong 9and thus the wrong head, but that can be a minor thing.
But it got worse when it showed the "brontosaurus" as having nostrils on top of its head, which is actually a feature of the Brachiasaurus. And then having it hid from the Allosaurus (correct predator, at least) under water perpetuates the swamp-dwelling, water-immersing behavior model which is again incorrect.
If only those offending pages could be excised it would get four or five stars. The book does show the flying and swimming contemporaries of the dinosaurs; correctly identifying them as not being "dinosaurs." That could be more explicit but the point is made, even if subtly.

Now I see above there is a new publishing date. I hope the offending passage has been corrected. Then it would be a solid four-star book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars "This isn't fun anymore."
I agree with other reviewers. The text needs to be edited down to more high points and less blah blah blah.

Also -- and this is my chief complaint -- there are so many stickers and they're not labeled (for pages 3 and 4) like other, better sticker books. Sometimes for the first few dinosaurs, we had to search through hundreds of dinosaur images. And many of them look alike, with the tail up or the mouth open in a certain way. So it's tough to find the right sticker, even as an adult. We searched together for about 10 dinosaurs and then my son said, "This isn't fun anymore" and put the book down. I agreed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Old-fashioned and rather misleading...but the stickers might still entertain.
This book is a collection of reusable stickers with some explanatory text. There are also a few double-paged backdrops--some rather sketchy-looking scenes with rocks and vegetation on which kids can arrange their stickers.

It's an odd collection of images. Many of them are rather uninspiring and old fashioned. It looks as though the main criterion for including a picture in this book was being an old, cheap, or public domain image. You won't find any feathered dinosaurs here. None of the feathered dinosaurs of China are included in the book. And the dromaeosaurids ("raptor" dinosaurs) are depicted as featherless, scaly creatures.

So these aren't the latest, vibrant, anatomically-detailed illustrations available. Indeed, if you look on the back cover you'll see an Iguanodon that could have been drawn in the 19th century. The dinosaur is using its tail as a prop for standing up, like a kangaroo.

The organization and text can be misleading. For example, there is a page devoted to birds that includes pterosaurs and bats. I assume that the author knows that pterosaurs and bats are not birds. But the text makes no attempt to clarify this point.

Elsewhere, the text notes that dinosaurs had scaly skin. It would be more correct to say that dinosaurs had a variety of skin textures, and that some even had feathers. At another point, the text notes that sabertoothed cats had "serrated" teeth. I don't know what the author is referring to unless she's talking about the carnassial teeth (which are in the back of the mouth and a common feature of mammalian carnivore dentition).

Some stickers are just odd. There is an image of a Sivapithecus skull. It looks good, I suppose, and the text correctly identifies Sivapithecus as an ancestor of the orangutan. Never mind the obvious question--what is this doing in a dinosaur book? The book doesn't even include a picture of a living animal (i.e., a reconstruction of Sivapithecus or a photo of an orangutan). So it's just a skull out of context.

Overall? This book has some entertainment value. Kids can peel the stickers off and put them in various positions against the backdrops. It's fun to look at--as long as you don't look too closely. If amazon allowed me to award half points, I'd give it 2.5 stars. But this book isn't a great source of accurate information--visual or otherwise--about extinct animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for dinosaur loving kids
My 3 1/2 year old son loves this book.He was able to do the stickers with very little help (peeling them off without ripping them can be a little tricky depending on the shape) and now that the book is finished, we read it over and over again. The stickers are easy to reposition for at least a few weeks but then the glue becomes sort of permanent.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Sticker Books not so hot
I really don't like the Ultimate Sticker Book series books.I've bought several for my 4 year-old twins and found them to be very difficult for the kids to use.The pages are plain, unexciting and text-heavy -- not good for pre-readers.For pre-schoolers I highly recommend the sticker books by Roger Priddy (My Giant Sticker Activity Book is a favorite). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars God's Word really DOES offend, I guess...
I'm reading this book to my child and amazed at how, in the past, I swallowed hook/line/sinker all the ideas that were handed to me on a platter by my teachers and the media. Reading this book has made me open my Bible more and try to find out for myself just how and where these dinosaurs fit in. And right there in Genesis it says on the 6th day God created animals AND man. There are too many other references to dinosaurs in the Bible to mention right here, and I encourage you to investigate for yourself (look up dragons in the Bible, very interesting) but needless to say, it has changed my view.

Why is it easier for us to accept a theory than a fact? (Even Darwin himself didn't fully believe in his theories near the end of his life, a theory being, well, a THEORY, after all). Why not look to the best history book of all, the Bible, for any question we have about history? And please don't bash scientists. In fact, everything scientists have found supports events that happened in the Bible. (I know, you're thinking "What about fossilization?!?" Everybody has a different opinion on that! But when they found a dinosaur bone with red blood cells STILL IN IT, even the secular scientists admitted the bone couldn't be billions of years old. But THAT didn't get on the news, did it? No, because we would have to change all the school text books and secular scientists would have to admit they were wrong about something.)

The the Bible says "the Word of God will offend..." and apparently it does, especially on the issue of creation.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Jesus-freak thinks this book is stupid.
Seriously. The Bible is truth, but it employs many different literature devices. The Genesis Creation story is a broad, undetailed generalization about the order that things came into being. It's like eight sentences long. And its order matches with the scientific evidence & fossil record. THIS BOOK IS AN INSULT to intelligent people everywhere, ESPECIALLY to intelligent Christians. It's this kind of bizzarre junk that makes believers look like idiots. I am homeschooling my kids with Christian and mainstream materials, and I wouldn't allow this garbage into my house... unless they were learning to write a rebuttal essay. While I firmly believe that that God could have created the world in this way, the evidence He left behind PROVES that He didn't. The more I study the Bible, the more I see logic, method, and flow. God can be known, understood, and trusted (which is more than I can say for many people pushing an agenda, claiming to interpret the Scripture) in a way that a child can know, understand, and trust a good parent. He left us proof of what He did and how He did it... why do people like this author ignore that?

4-0 out of 5 stars The King commanded Danielthrown in the den of T-rexes, but an angel came and shut the T-rexes mouths and Daniel was unharmed

Wow! Before Creation Scienticians discovered the facts, Bible stories were kind of boring. Sure the O.T. is full of blood and slaughter and greed and sex, but so are movies like Troy and 300, which looked good but ended up being a little tedious by the end. And while the Book of Revelations has some decent psychedelic prophecies, movies like Altered States are just as crazy sick. So if the Bible were a movie it would only be a run of the mill big budget pop corner. It might not even be certified fresh on Rotten [...]

However, you spice the Bible up with dinosaurs and you're playing a whole new ball game! Dinos perk things up right away! What an ingenious way of luring kids into an interest in the Bible. The kids will be so blinded by their interest in dinosaurs that they won't even see what hit'em! Whoever thought this one up must literally possess the cunning of a serpent.

Some of my favorite restored Bible scenes include: The Israelites riding dinosaurs out of their Egyptian bondage, Jesus riding a Triceratops into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, and Jesus and George W. Bush high-fiving while riding a pterodactyl onto an aircraft carrier. Now THAT'S religion!!

I do have a few suggestions for other books to help entice kids into reading the Bible. The authors might want to consider writing: The Cool Robots of Eden, The Wiggles of Eden, The X-Men of Eden and the Muppets of Eden, wherein thanks to the miraculous, healing powers of Jesus, Elmo's testicles finally drop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good purchase!
This book is nice to have not only because it is not full of unscientific jargon about evolution but because it also presents the facts about dinosaurs. My children were excited to have me read it to them. After each page, they were looking forward to finding out what was on the next one, and so was I. The only thing we did not like were the imaginary time-travelers that were integrated into the storyline. But that was minor, and they were relatively easy to ignore.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY EFFECTIVE BOOK
Dinosaurs of Eden, a new one - Dinosaurs for kids, Dinosaurs by design and Dinosaurs Unleashed are best books about dinosaurs. I strongly recommend these 4 books to all Christian parents and teachers. I, as parent and religious teacher can testify that kids really like these books and these books are of great help when you start to teach children about truth of God's Creation and when you confront evolutionist dogmas with evidences for biblical Creation, and extinction of dinosaurs in Global Flood. Great illustrations with Adam, Eve and dinosaurs in Eden and with dinosaurs on the Noah's ark. I hope to see more books of this sort. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A great dinosaur book, just maybe not the best for group sharing.
Dinosaurs are almost always a great choice for story time read alouds and originally I thought this one was perfect. The illustrations are very engaging and the super hungry dinosaur himself is just scary enough and just cute enough to strike that perfect balance.Hal is a great hero of the story, standing up to the great big dinosaur and telling him it's just not fair to eat a very small boy.

What makes this not so great as a read aloud is that in a few places there are just too many illustrations per page and the text is sometimes hard to follow from page to page.If it's read a couple of times, then it's great - but when you only have one chance, it can be kind of confusing.Parts of the story rely almost soley on the crowded illustrations to carry the narrative and it will take a bit of practice to carry that off in a group. Also, as a group read aloud, some of this text seems a bit too jarring; like when the dinosaur says "then I'll eat your mom" or "then I'll eat your dad instead".Now this all turns out fine because Hal and Billy triumph in the end and I think if you read it one on one with a child it will provide lots of fun scary thrills. It just felt like a bit too much for a group.

I really like this book, just not so much for group sharing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book!
My two year old loves this book, and my husband loves reading it to him.The pictures are great, and there is happening on each page to keep him engrossed in the book as we read the simple lines. My one complaint might be that the flow of text is sometimes difficult to follow as it crosses pages, but after reading it aloud 1-2 times, you get into the swing of where to read next.Great, fun book.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to fill a hungry dino
What happens when a ravenous dinosaur stumbles into the backyard of a little boy and his spirited dog? Hal finds out in //The Super Hungry Dinosaur//, created by Martin Waddell. Hal confronts the menace when he threatens to eat him and his parents. Just a lad, Hal faces the dinosaur and politely reasons with him, "I am small and eating small children is not really fair." Hal remains rational until the dinosaur goes too far by threatening his dog. The rambunctious battle ensues. A palette of color and brilliant illustration, by Leonie Lord, brushes the pages. Ultimately, the dinosaur meets his match in Hal and is, instead, served up a piping plate of spaghetti with meatballs; the dog survives this scuffle. He eats and eats until he is satisfied and the family sees him off, inviting him back again. The real story lies in the artwork. Modern, descriptive, detailed lines and color are expressed clearly and pleasingly. Young ones will love the characterization and the repetition in this tale. Get ready for a repeat reading, "just one more time, please!"

5-0 out of 5 stars This super silly madcap battle between Hal and the "Super Hungry Dinosaur" will delight the dino fan!"Grrrrrrr!"
Hal was chasing his dog Billy around the backyard. The birds were interested in the bird feeder, a butterfly was fluttering around the yard and a yellow cat was asleep on top of the fence. There was one critter who suddenly burst through the fence all ready to eat up Hal and Billy."Grrrrrrr!" It was a "Super Hungry Dinosaur" and he was looking for a tasty snack."I'm hungry and I've come to eat you!" Of course Hal convinced him that he was not being reasonable (in a polite way of course).Well, if he couldn't eat a little boy, he could eat his mom or dad.Oh, no, Hal loved them and that just wouldn't do!

Hal got really mad when that dino said he was going to eat his dog."OH NO YOU WON'T!"He meant business now.The chase was on and things started to fly.Billy was running like crazy and Hal was not far behind on his scooter.Plant pots went flying, the clothesline went down, and they all hopped over a little trampoline."Grrrrrrr!"Hal and Billy wrangled, twisted and turned and lassoed the Super Hungry Dinosaur.Hal, who was astride his back yelled, "Do you give in?"Through rain and sunshine he grumbled and refused.Would that Super Hungry Dinosaur let himself be defeated by a little boy?

This super silly madcap battle between Hal and the "Super Hungry Dinosaur" will delight the dino fan.I loved the way this imaginative story unfolded. It was almost as if the author became a little boy again tussling with this Super Hungry Dinosaur. The drawings were simple, but very captivating. If your youngster is imaginative, loves dinos and is into active, zany stories this is one you just might want to consider!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and goofy
Help! Somebody help! Mean old T-Rex has swallowed Santa Claus and taken his place on Christmas Eve! Hitching his eight misbehaving dinosaur friends to Santa's sleigh, the naughty crew is off to destroy Christmas. Whatever will we do?! In this hilarious adaptation of Clement Moore's `Twas the Night Before Christmas, author/illustrator Jim Harris weaves an uproarious tale of dinosaurs trying their best to wreck havoc while Santa and Dad do their best to thwart the mischievous creatures' bad behavior.

While the author, Jim Harris, is listed as an illustrator on the dust-jacket bio, I think he should add poet to his resume. The poem flowed perfectly, with goofy and bizarre words fitting flawlessly into the tale:

"T-Rex! cried Santa, "your time has come."
(As he made some adjustments to the video gun.)
But Rex roared and charged before Santa could shoot,
So he tossed me the gun as he ran from the brute."

Santa and Dad are aided by the household pets, a fluffy cat and an adorable, plump basset hound. But it's up to young Mikey to save the day and put those dastardly dinosaurs in their place. Together with the expressive, fabulously funny artwork that Jim Harris is known for, this is a Christmas story children will want read to them many times.

Quill says: Dinosaur's Night Before Christmas is an hilarious poem that is sure to get even the grumpiest scrooge in the Christmas spirit!

Product Description

"Magnificent in its breadth and illustration." -- Booklist

"A well-illustrated large-format book... A good book for a young person who is curious about dinosaurs." -- Choice

No other life-form captures the imagination and attention like dinosaurs. Organized by the major dinosaur families, Dinosaurus identifies 500 species creature by creature, from the voracious flesh-eaters to the egg-stealers to the vegetarians, detailing what they looked like, what they ate and how they fought, lived and died.

All this information is dramatically presented and exciting to read, with features such as:

  • At-a-glance fact files
  • Concise explanations of known traits and habits of each dinosaur species
  • Vivid full-color illustrations
  • Latin name, translation and pronunciation
  • Adult length and weight
  • Height specifics and comparison to humans
  • Diet and habitat
  • Global distribution.

Dinosaurus also challenges and discredits some long-popular myths and legends. For example, this guide shows that:

  • The dinosaur known as brontosaurus never existed
  • Tyrannosaurus was not the biggest meat-eater of all time
  • Flying dinosaurs were not simply feeble gliders
  • Sea dinosaurs could not out-swim today's fastest fish.

Brimming with the research from digs in North America, Mongolia, Europe, China and elsewhere, Dinosaurus is comprehensive, innovative and as compelling and exciting as the dinosaurs themselves.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor Pictures - Megalosaurus Looks Like Darth Maul
See all my dinosaur book reviews.

I have been into dinosaurs for 30 of my 35 years, ever since my first trip to the museum gazing upon the fossils of these wonderful creatures. I have an extensive collection of dinosaur books both old and new. "Dinosaurus" is aimed at the new student but is flawed.

The beautifully presented "Dinosaurus" is certainly one of the thickest dinosaur books; almost 450 pages of information contained in 15 chapters. The chapters sort dinosaurs into their broader categories like 'The Giants' and 'Armored Dinosaurs', as opposed to era and period order. The 20 page introduction explains such things as fossilisation, evolution, myths, and time scale. The next two chapters provide information on early life and movement onto land. Chapters 3 to 13 specialise on dinosaurs while the last two go into flying reptiles, sea reptiles and animals of the Tertiary and Quaternary Periods.

Each page features a single dinosaur. Half of the page is a written explanation or description. This mainly presents information on fossil location, discoverer, and some on features of the dinosaur. There is also a fact-file chart. The other half of the page is a picture, either painted or drawn with colour. The book caters for the new student by providing basic information.

I like the way the book is set out. But there are problems:

1) The information is not new or cutting-edge, and where there is individual thought it is only speculation.

The information on each dinosaur is not new. I'm not a palaeontologist, but I have 30 years of interest and knowledge under my belt. I could open an older book of mine and read the same thing for most of the dinosaurs. So, if you are looking for something fresh or new, this is not it.

In dinosaur books, there needs to be a balance between suggested fact and speculation. While some books like "National Geographic Dinosaur" lean too far to suggested fact, "Dinosaurus" speculates too much. For example, I quote: "The long spines of Polacanthus MAY have been along the neck and flanks, with the more curved 'shark's fin' projections along the upper tail. It was a low-slung, heavy dinosaur, PROBABLY with a beak-like mouth for cropping plant food". Polacanthus is an old fossil - it is in books from the 70's. It has been known for years where it's spines are and what it's mouth looks like - the fossil hasn't changed! So there is too much suggestion and not enough fact in "Dinosaurus".

However, this book does showcase recent discoveries (last 20 years), but aside from where they are found and what they look like we are not really told anything else. It really is for the new student.

"Dinosaurus" gives enough information on each dinosaur species for the new student, but it is not comprehensive. My main objection is that it doesn't provide any decent information on genealogies - how the dinosaurs relate to each other. Other dinosaur books, for example "National Geographic Dinosaurs" and "The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopaedia", provide much better detail on the families with illustrated family trees matched against time along with evolution patterns. "Dinosaurus" mentions the main group name, for example, Theropoda for Giganotosaurus but not that it is actually an allosaur. All comparisons are with T-Rex not with other allosaurs - its family.

2) Pictures.

The pictures in "Dinosaurus" are the single most disappointing aspect of this book.

Each picture is either very poorly drawn/painted or is terribly inaccurate. For example, I'll just concentrate on the large carnosaurs: Allosaurus is nothing like the modern convention - I'm picturing the allosaurs in 'Walking With Dinosaurs' here: head forward slightly below the neck vertebrae with tail out verses an upright Allosaurus in the book. Also, the book's Carnotaurus doesn't have a bull-like snout but has elbows! Spinosaurus, Albertosaurus and Ceratosaurus are shockingly bad. Megalosaurus looks like Darth Maul.

The other thing is, I am a dinosaur romantic. By this I mean I grew up on dinosaur books that painted pictures of the world they lived in and how they interacted with each other and their surroundings. In other words I prefer the books that have many pictures of sprawling landscapes, pictures of herbivorous dinosaurs in their habitats with the local communities, and pictures of the hunter verses hunted in order to gauge size and scope.

The pictures of each dinosaur in "Dinosaurus" are stand alone - no background, no context, and no sense of size. There is a scale comparing the dinosaur to a 6 foot man, but this is in terms of 'size' not height or length - meaningless information. And information that requires us to turn pages to compare dinosaurs, instead of scaled diagrams of dinosaurs next to each other.

There are hardly any pictures of dinosaurs in an environmental setting and these are taken from other sources anyway. The best ones in this book are also found in "The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopaedia". If you want gorgeous pictures, then look no further than Raul Martin - the illustrator of "National Geographic Dinosaurs".

Overall, I'm disappointed with "Dinosaurus". It doesn't add anything to my collection. It would probably suit a new student - but it is a lot of money and there are cheaper, better books. I would recommend "National Geographic Dinosaur" first followed by "The Kingfisher Dinosaur Encyclopedia" by Burnie.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Better Dinosaur Books
This is one of the better dinosaur books out there. The illustrations range from good to excellent; some are so realistic that they appear to be photographs (see the Baryonyx on p. 190). However, as pointed out by other reviewers, some of the illustrations appear to be considerably off the mark (the orange Spinosaurus on p. 199 appears to be the size of a Velociraptor, not a 45 foot long animal!). The text is written for an adult with some knowledge of the field; it's very well written, makes interesting points, but it's not done in a stiff or awkward style. The scope of dinosaurs covered is not complete, but it contains info on more dinosaurs than 90% of the books on this subject, & the info is quite detailed, & there's an index for easy searching. Overall, a good addition to any serious dinosaur library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Congratulations - Excellent
Thanks for your product - it's too much good!
It's satisfy my better expectatives...

Have a good day...

3-0 out of 5 stars Something isn't right here...
Something isn't right here. Where are the feathers? The scaly velociraptor mongoliensis and therizinosaurus(pardon me for spelling [if it's not right]) look less likely than a tyrannosaurus with wings. And on a page about Stegos, i read that "Stegosaurs, like MOST DINOSAURS [My caps] are COLDBLOODED. That is not right! And i thought that ever since the time Gregory S. Paul's every Theropod being feathery theory, dinosaurs were becoming faster, smarter, and featherier in the public eye! Well, gees, did this book ever prove me wrong! And by the way, except for a couple of feathery fellows, how come they're all brown or maybe a little dull red? Frankly, although there is good info here, go for The Field Guide to Dinosaurs by Henry Gee for the dino's life. ... Read more

Product Description

How did those enormous dinosaur skeletons get inside the museum?

Long ago, dinosaurs ruled the Earth. Then, suddenly, they died out. For thousands of years, no one knew these giant creatures had ever existed. Then people began finding fossils--bones and teeth and footprints that had turned to stone. Today, teams of experts work together to dig dinosaur fossils out of the ground, bone by fragile bone. Then they put the skeletons together again inside museums, to look just like the dinosaurs of millions of years ago.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not As Much Fun As I Hoped
I was looking for a book for a 6-year-old that explained excavation of dinosaur bones. This book covers too much material very superficially and short-changes the excavation process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Amusing
I just thought this book was flat-out funny, for kids and adults.Although most of the humor is in the pictures, there's a little bit mixed in with the text as well.

Before reading this book, I didn't know that most dinosaur skeletons in museums were actually copies of real-life skeletons. But when you think about it, it makes sense.I mean, how many complete authentic T-rex skeletons are out there? Not too many.Got to have copies if you want people to see skeletons.

I kept looking for the author's last name in this book but never found it.

And you know, I always thought I'd be a paleontologist when I was a kid, and even though I don't want to be one anymore, it's still fun to read great stuff like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy/ fun to read, comprehensive, informative, & great pics
I am six years old and in second grade.I needed a book for my report on Apatasaurus. This book was just perfect.I had to have 5 sources for my report, and this book was my favorite.I have a few other books onDinosaurs from this author too.I like the way he writes. Thanks for yourhelp with all the good information. ...
