1-0 out of 5 stars Writing a book in 21 days?
I never post any comments on Amazon.com before but after reading this book, I have to get my feeling out to you.

We have many books in the title 'Learning ... in 21 days'. This book in other way was written in 21 days. CD Rom softwares were badly and unprofessionally prepared. Program names do not match with the book and on the CDROM. Apart from some of the algorithms introduction (which earned one star), the review of the CPU or the EVM board is a cut down version of the EVM board Reference Guide. Some of the codes' quality definitely not 5 stars or 1st class. And if you think this book is thin and think again, that 25% of the book are list of programs. The book is 220 pages that means you are getting a book of 150 pages to tell you how to program DSP on TMS320C6000x. That left you thinking this is part I of 5 parts book. One good thing is the included software using the evm6x.dll to run some simple windows control program to pass data to dsp (on EVM board if you have the board) to do DCT and display the image on windows. But the example is so simple that, you and me can do it in two days.

I personally think this book should not even have passed the first draft standard for publishing. Never mind, people who bought this book Will be disappointed. Thank god, I borrowed it from library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thin, but still the best buy.
This book has limited, but good contents. Like other tech books, number of pages is boosted slightly by listing codes. There are many small errors like wrong subscripts and sign errors in equations, which will not affect understanding of the concept. It is the best buy, if you must buy one on TI DSP. This book alone is still not enough to start serious work, but it has enough details to clarify everything and it is well written enough for leisure reading. I hope the 6211 codes can appear on the web site soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Correction from the Author
This is to inform you that the book is NOT out-of-print (Please check with Prentice Hall)

5-0 out of 5 stars Definite "must" for all prospective and current C6000 users
This text has been carefully designed to serve several purposes.Firstly it acts as an excellent educational aid for both students and lecturers. It contains all the necessary theory to get to grips with the C6000 seriesand several examples to allow readers to test and implement commonalgorithms using the knowledge gained. (Examples include: FIR, IIR andadaptive (LMS) filters, Goertzel algorithms and DCT for JPEG)

It is alsoa very useful reference for DSP users with some experience as the exampleapplications included can be used to provide a basis from which to buildtheir own specialist applications.

The structure makes it easy to followand refer back to.The nature of the structure lends itself to easilysupporting DSP courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Adefinite "must" for all prospective and current C6000 users.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book
This book does not only cover how LabVIEW can be used for digital signal processing, where it does an excellent job, but also explains some very important DSP topics, such as adaptive filters. In my latest research, I was delving deeply into the adaptive DSP filter theory and this book gave me a very good starting point on the subject. I also find the other topics in the book very good and useful, especially the "DSP Integration" and "Frequency Domain Processing" chapters. The basic DSP concepts are covered as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for upper division / grad level / industry
I found this book highly valuable. With it I was able to complete a upper division / grad level project in active noise cancellation.(Search the web for the string "Active Noise Cancellation in Free Space using Adaptive Filtering on a Digital Signal Processor" and you will find the description of my project. The project did not ultimately work, because the design involved is extremely sensitive to real world components, however the experience in getting it to demonstration was excellent.)

With this book and the hardware from TI, it is very possible to get great experiments going.(For advanced work.Thisis not a beginner book.If you don't understand assembly programming and programming embedded systems this might not be the place to start.)

Of course the hardware from TI has it's limitations, such as using their own wierd codec, however, you can bypass this codec and built your own analog interface board, which I'd recommend for larger projects, especially if your lab hasavailable access to board layout & production to build clean analog interface boards.

I'd also suggest that grad classes use this as a lab text. Good real-world books like this are difficult to find. This one is still technologically current (for the time being).

2-0 out of 5 stars A below average book
I bought the book and a TI DSK kit because I thought I could self study TMS320 family. But it's impossible for me to learn from this book.My background: I had a DSP class, an assembly Motorola 6800 class andnumerical method/C class and found this book was too difficult for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for begginers.
This book provides a great help to people learning how DSPs work and how DSP algorithms are implemented in this powerful processors. The DSK provides a cheap way to start the learning process and Dr. Chassaingteaches us how to exploit this kit. The only drawback I saw for this bookis the fact that crucial parts of the algorithms are developed in C usingthe C compiler for the C31, which is much more expensive than the DSK. Henrik Sorensen's book works more on the assembly language even though itis oriented towards the C30 processor, which has a PC based evaluationmodule and C compiler, allowing it to communicate directly to the Host PC.To finish this review, this book helped me a lot and left me with lots ofwork to do. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars What's the Point?
This is just a pamphlet about very basic signal processing and at the level of an undergraduate term paper. What a joke.

1-0 out of 5 stars DSP by Rangarao
The English translation of the book is awkward. The problems begin on page 1 (where the title "Organization of the Book" is misspelled "Organisation of the Book") and continue from there. The emphasis given to topics is bizarre and inconsistent. For example, the author spends considerable time on the basics of linearity then assumes significant background on noise and transfer functions. The illustrations and diagrams are poorly annotated, often not even having x and y axis labels. Not infrequently they are presented without introduction and without obvious relevance to the text body. This book claims to cover many important topics then systematically disappoints on all of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Digital Signal Processing : A Practitioner's Approach
A very well presented, organized, and crafted subject into 6 chapters. Prof. K.V.Rangarao, with his Research expertise for more than 25 years in the fields of Digital signal processing and Estimation Theories, has presented the subject in each of the chapters with simple, crisp andwell explained manner. Certainly this book will form one of the reference books with every Digital Signal processing student love to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Its a book with information that I needed for school. I'm not sure how to rate this other than it has a lot of information, it's easy to read, and it has a ton of MATLAB examples. MATLAB will help you out immensely because there are some VERY LONG calculations that MATLAB does in one command.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last, a DSP book for engineer instead of scientiest....
I think the reason DSP is preceived as difficult to understand, is because traditional book/class tend to spend most of the time solving equations such as DFT, FFT, Z-transform of different signal (pulse, unit step, sinusoidal, square, triangular etc), differential equation to get zero and pole, stability, then bilinear transformation etc. As a result, students might spend all the time doing mathematics, than trying to understand what DSP is and how to apply it to real world.

This book reduce the mathematics and proof to minimum when required, rather than throwing you all the equations and explanation at one time. For example, I dont always why other authors always try to explain the details of non-causal system since they usually say real time system is always causal and hence ignore the non-causal DSP design.

I particularly like the exercise and MATLAB code. They are incredibly simple, but are very useful to aid understanding and cover almost all aspect of a DSP system, from equalizing ADC quantising noise, through to multirate DSP (which is rarely touched by most of the fundamental DSP books). The MATLAB code allows the reader to design filter and visualise the signal and its frequency spectrum very quickly. I think it is more important for beginner to first understand the concept of DSP using MATLAB, than trying to solve the mathematics, try to write C-code for FFT and plotting graph.

As I mentioned, the mathematics is not detailed in this book. This is a double edge sword. Reader should have good knowledge on FFT, Z-transform. I recommend reading "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" by Lyons beforehand, which provide very good explanation on fundamental DSP theory and mathematics.

This is the most useful DSP book I have ever read!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Very Best
It is an honor to be the first Amazon customer to review this book. The two DSP books which have received so far the highest Amazon customer reviews are those by Steven Smith and Richard Lyons.Proakis is a close third, though one reviewer says that its reader may wish to have Smith and Lyons in hand to help with understanding. This book by Li Tan belongs in the top three or four, if not the very top.My qualification for commenting on it comes from having just audited a graduate level DSP course, in which I happened to discover this book, along with the books by Stevens and Lyons, at the university library and used for outside study. The Smith and Lyons books were very helpful, but this one seemed to follow the course itself much more closely (actually covering material beyond the course), and so it was the most helpful of all.It is loaded with step by step, helpful examples, and alsomatlab code examples, some of which are particularly revealing and helpful.(Thank you for reading my review.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for design rules for specific filter types
This old book is pretty handy as a "just the facts ma'am" kind of guide. If you don't already know DSP, don't waste your time. You'll be totally lost and won't know what's going on. However, if you already know DSP and its associated theory and you need design rules in nice labeled steps with some examples and plenty of figures, this is a nice old book to have around. It's not trying to teach you anything, it's just trying to guide you through the design of specific types of filters. The only down side is that the programs that implement the various filters are all in Fortran. However, that is not really a fatal flaw. Every Fortran program is merely implementing an algorithm that has already been thoroughly explained. Unless you're bound and determined to completely lift programs from the book without understanding them AND you don't know Fortran, I'd say this old book is worth having in your library.

Don't let my review have you thinking there is no math in this book - there is plenty of it supporting the various filter designs. There are just no textbook explanations. For that I suggest Discrete-Time Signal Processing (2nd Edition) (Prentice-Hall Signal Processing Series). It is the definitive guide to DSP for beginners and professionals alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars not obsolete
Ok, the TMS320 is now heavily outdated. The book was written in 1987, and the chip that it uses as an example was state of the art then. But Moore's Law continued inexorably in the intervening years. TI is still the market leader in DSP and now has much faster chips. No surprise.

However, the book itself retains an intrinsic utility. Much of it concerns the explaining of the maths and other ideas in DSPs. Including the crucial concepts of a Finite Impulse Response and an Infinite Impulse Response filter. All still very much germane. The treatment is comprehensive, going into the most common filters, like the Butterworth, and also how to design a filter. ... Read more

Product Description
Readers] interested in advances in DSP and communications processing can learn from the excellent presentation of this needed material Dennis Silage, PhD, K3DS, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA

In Digital Signal Processing Technology: Essentials of the Communications Revolution, Doug Smith, KF6DX, explains digital signal processing (DSP) concepts in a comprehensive, readable treatise focusing on communications technology. The work is sufficiently analytical for those skilled in math to fully understand DSP and its applications, while simultaneously affording those less mathematically inclined an understandable picture of this exciting technology. Presented from an engineering perspective, the material achieves a balance between theory and practice. Smith gives a complete discussion of contemporary DSP technology, with special emphasis on applications in communications. The author: offers a brief history and an overview of its applications outside communications; explains how DSP gives us higher performance at lower cost; details digital sampling, including fundamental and harmonic sampling, aliasing and mechanisms at play in real data converters; makes clear how numbers are actually stored and manipulated; reviews the design of digital filters and their properties, including adaptive filters; examines the mathematics of modulation and demodulation, digital coding methods for speech and noise-reduction techniques, including Fourier transforms; explores the design of digital transceivers at the block-diagram, DSP hardware and software levels, including direct digital synthesis (DDS);highlights current DSP research that is likely to find its way into future radio systems, such as adaptive beamforming. The book begins with basic concepts and gradually brings in more complex ideas. It assumes no prior knowledge of DSP. Most of the more technical sections require only a working knowledge of algebra. Digital Signal Processing Technology: Essentials of the Communications Revolution is written for engineers, technicians and scientists who want to learn how DSP works and what it can do. It also serves as a reference for DSP experimenters. ... Read more

Product Description
Many digital signal processing and communication algorithms are first simulated using floating-point arithmetic and are later transformed into fixed-point arithmetic to reduce implementation complexity. This transformation process may take most of the design time for complex designs and may involve a long series of manual ad-hoc design choices. This book provides methods to find optimum word lengths efficiently, implement low-power fixed-point arithmetic by word length reduction techniques, and automate the transformation process from floating-point to fixed-point arithmetic. The automation step provides a design tradeoff curve of signal quality vs. implementation complexity for the system, which allows the designer to pick any operating point on the tradeoff curve. The book should help in developing fixed-point hardware or software implementations from floating-point representations, and should be especially useful to professionals who are developing high-speed or low-power hardware or software. ...
