5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction
I have read lots of introductory and advanced dsp books. In my opinion this book is the best book when it comes to learning fundamentals. This was the book along with the book i'll mention later which allowed me to read and understand more advanced books. Explanations are clear and supported with lots of figures and worked examples. Even though software examples provided on it's disk is very primitive and dated, they are still very helpful for beginners. (Source codes available and perfect for validating your understanding about formulas and calculations) I strongly recommend it. Understanding Digital Signal Processing (2nd Edition) by Richard G. Lyons is also great. If possible buy both otherwise buy this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless piece of trash.
This book is very hard to follow. You really cannot use it to learn or research any topics in DSP.It is very hard to follow, and it is full of errors.Try using another book. I will throw this book and the CD tonight.I can't believe I bought this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Errors
This book is riddled with errors - the errata (available on the Athena Group's website) is twenty pages long! Some of the errors are just grammatical, but many are mathematical. It is very difficult to learn when an important equation is incorrect. In light of the many other DSP texts (which don't have all the mistakes that this one has) at all levels that are available, there is no reason to buy this book.

Product Description
With the advent of `multimedia', digital signal processing(DSP) of sound has emerged from the shadow of bandwidth limited speechprocessing to become a research field of its own. To date, mostresearch in DSP applied to sound has been concentrated on speech, which is bandwidth limited to about 4 kilohertz. Speech processing isalso limited by the low fidelity typically expected in the telephonenetwork. Today, the main applications of audio DSP are high quality audiocoding and the digital generation and manipulation of music signals. They share common research topics including perceptual measurementtechniques and analysis/synthesis methods. Additional important topicsare hearing aids using signal processing technology and hardwarearchitectures for digital signal processing of audio. In all theseareas the last decade has seen a significant amount ofapplication-oriented research. The frequency range of wideband audio has an upper limit of 20kilohertz and the resulting difference in frequency range and Signalto Noise Ratio (SNR) due to sample size must be taken into accountwhen designing DSP algorithms. There are whole classes of algorithmsthat the speech community is not interested in pursuing or using. These algorithms and techniques are revealed in this book. This book is suitable for advanced level courses and serves as avaluable reference for researchers in the field. Interested andinformed engineers will also find the book useful in their work. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book offers an excellent combination of written explanations and Matlab examples. I'm using it in combination with Proakis's DSP book, and I'm finding that if I want to get an idea of what Proakis is talking about, I need to read Kronenburger first. A good example is Kronenburger's explanation of linear phase. With two simple Matlab examples (signals combined to show phase distortion and signals combined to show linear phase with no distortion), an intuitive understanding of "what is linear phase, anyway?" was provided. Many other topics are similarly treated. The Matlab examples are plentiful and very instructive. I'm very glad that I purchased this book, it has helped me tremendously. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gentle Start for DSP
This wonderful book was the first one I ever came across that made sense to me, coming from an software 'n audio background rather than being a full-on EE head. In fact, the book is well worth the price for chapters 6 and 7 alone describing in amazingly clear and simple language the principles behind the Fourier transform.

4-0 out of 5 stars There is a simple, yet great thinking behind its material
The book is very good, you can share the author's thinking and it is very interesting for beginners or engineers who do not like to go through complicated mathematical proofs.
The CD ROM calculator is nice to use, but it needs more improvement especially in scale adjustments. The calculator can be better improved by developing some interfaces for copy and paste utilities including presenting numbers on the graphs. I almost finished most of it the same day I purchased, but still cannot be used alone to understand DSP. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful experience to grasp interesting interpretation of the authors' thinking, which reflects practicality dimension to the subject. Well done

4-0 out of 5 stars good introduction to DSP
This is a good book for readers who didn't have much background in math and DSP fields. It contains lots of useful information. But for a experienced engineer or colleage students, this book is a little too easy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
For a person looking for a simple introduction to DSP, this book is a good start. Many of the theories are presented very simply. For an in-depth understanding, I would've liked to see references at the end of eachchapter that would lead me to books that might deal the topic(s) in greaterdetail. But for a person looking for a foothold in DSP, this book is highlyrecommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Reader

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good DSP book
I spent a lot of money on this book and was very disappointed. The book is marginal at best and did nothing to help me implement a real world DSP algorithm. More University propaganda to confuse students. Its really a shame that professors get paid to make things more confusing than necessary. Ive been writing HDL code for over 12 years and given the rave reviews of this book thought it might add to my library. It did not. It is very poorly organized and the DSP explanations are weak and confusing. If you really want to understand how to implement a DSP algorithm using an HDL (verilog/vhdl), save your money and purchase the best DSP book available by Richard Lyons. There is no better DSP book out there, and you will never see it used by a professor. Perhaps the Steve Smith Guide to DSP book or free online version (gotta love the guy for that). Then go out and and get a free student copy of ModelSim or ActiveHDL, buy yourself a burger, start writing some code based off tutorials, and thank me for not letting you waste your money on this book. And of course if you end up doing this for a career, support your EDA tool vendors!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for VLSI DSP
It is very nice book, all the areas are explained in a very clear manner. This is an example for How the book should be!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed,and thorough,an excellent book
Though being a beginner in VLSI systems, this book helped me get the grip in subjects I considered extremely difficult to grasp. It is well written, with many real-life examples and offers the reader wide range of knowledge . I think it is not only useful but absolutely indispensable for students and professional engineers alike .

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Text for Digital Signal Processing Designers
If you're a communications system architect or designer, this is a required text for the efficient implementation of modern DSP algorithms.

Having the text for a few months, a group of us have alreadyapplied techniques offered in the text in VHDL.

The first chapters coverpipelining, parallel processing, retiming, folding and unfolding theory. These chapters are necessary to really understand DSP optimizationconcepts.I have not found another text where these concepts arediscussed.

The text is positioned well between a pure analytic text, anda "cookbook."Some personal effort is required to code atechnique, but this shouldn't be difficult for someone using MATLAB.Oncemodeled and simulated, the implementer should be able to translate the highlevel code into VHDL, Verilog, or a programmable DSP such as the TI TMS320in "C."

Personally, I found Dr. Prahi's discussion of fixedpoint quantization by canonic signed digit format very useful.

An exampleproblem is provided with each technique to enhance understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book of its kind...I love it!!!!!!!!!!!
I recomend this book to any DSP or Digital Communication student or proffesional!!. It is clear and full with detailed explanation, FIR, IIR, Polyphase Filters etc, etc, etc. Chao!! ... Read more
